    I went the same route. Gopro 9 was a nightmare. I skipped 10 and gave em a chance on the 11 mini again. Same BS it was freezing on me and I could never get it back to live because there is no Batterie to take out and put it back again. Costumer service almost no responding. Switched to DJI and I got a workhorse on my FPV Drones very reliable with very good Picture quality. Now I m using the Osmo Action 4 and can't wait to get my hands on the 5. My recommendation is stay away from Gopro and never listen to all this big TH-camrs telling you what a great camera Gopro is.

    I tried the insta360 Ace Pro and found the video quality to be much worse than my GoPro, I returned it as it was so awful. However I agree with you on the other points. All I do is go fishing, but sometimes it rains and the GoPro can't do waterproof external audio! How simple is that? I'm waiting for the DJI action 5 as it seems the DJI wireless mics might connect to it in quality removing the need for the media mod. I believe the new GoPro can connect to the DJI wireless mic but the quality is not full bandwidth etc. so I'm about to try the Action 5 to see how that works out. Fingers crossed.

    • @JakeOski
      @JakeOski  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The hydrophobic coating never worked for me on any cameras for spray droplets. I’ve had to burn it off every GoPro I’ve had - I just didn’t lick and dipped the lens on these shots. As per my clip here th-cam.com/video/RbjjN9XzJXo/w-d-xo.html
      That coating only really works at higher speeds with more air moving around the lens - eg when mounted on a bike in a rain.

      It would be nice if they could apply this as a firmware update to previous models... since they're exactly the same on the hardware side.

    • @rockels_journals
      @rockels_journals 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JakeOski They won't do that, they just want the 13 looking "special", so people going for that one instead of fixing their older model. Gopro really became a shit show...
      It was the same with the 12. Like all previous models (9/10/11) had overheating issues. It's just the same enclosure and the same hardware on them. So they took out the GPS out of 12 (just decreasing production costs, and still charging €400 for the same camera). And told the people that it was because of reducing overheating on certain resolutions and framerates.
      But I did a test with my gopro 11 and 12. And they only changed the firmware on the 12. They had reduced bitrates extremely on those resolutions they claimed to have improvements in runtime and overheating. Which is logical also, because most heat is generated by the CPU etc. So you can reduce that by lowering processing, which will also save battery life. Reducing processing is actually the only option if you're keeping on the same enclosure for year, without making more heat dispensation (it took them 4 years to finally bring up an extra heatsink now...) and keep using the same hardware.
      They're just keep fooling people, telling them fairytales every year, to keep them buying their next (software) update.
      They could had applied the same changes to the Hero11 firmware, while it's exactly the same hardware, to reduce overheating. But they didn't. They only want to sell.
      Customers don't have any value at Gopro (I doubt they have at DJI, but at least their Action 4 seems to be a step further and just working fine compared to the previous one). They just just see people as yearly buying meat.
      I'm still having the Hero12 now, it's just working fine so far. But now after this new 9/10/11/12 copy, which they call the 13, I'm really done with gopro. Especially now they've changed the battery layout, making all the Enduro batteries obsolete... And that for just the same enclosure...
      The new battery btw has the exact same dimensions as the previous Enduro battery, but it has only a slight increase of 180mA's. But comparing the specs of the 12 and the 13 on their own website, they claim both having the exact same runtime... For the exact same hardware...
      And like you say, they come with all kind of new features. Magnetic charging doors, magnetic mounts etc, but none of it is included. Gopro has become a verry big joke these days. And I hope more people wil going to abandon them now. Just let them bleed empty slowly.

    • @KevPV
      @KevPV 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      How about NO freezes. The fact that they "specialize" in only a few products, have for years, and still can't make a stable product is absolute garbage. GoPro is legitimately a terrible company coasting on their success from their earliest years. I'm so thankful to see I'm not the only one feeling this way. I have bought GoPros almost every year since the Hero 3 and after the 10 and all the problems I finally had to give up. It literally fails more than it works. Completely unreliable pieces of gear.

    • @southboundaustral
      @southboundaustral 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@KevPV I'm not here as an apologist for GoPro - merely passing on there has been an improvement. Apparently a substantial improvement.
      On the other hand, you are also responsible for what you purchase, caveat emptor. Never buy a new release without a time period for empirical analysis since (i) trusting a corporation's promises or sales talk is for them business for us a lie - welcome to the tightrope of consumer life. That holds for cars, espresso machines, cameras any product. Let early adopters do the hard yards and reap the benefits from their experimentation. What? There's a normative imperative that a product should work properly out the box? Does that hold for defect free property or defect free cars let alone software? That Lemon Range Rover is back at the shop again and you're not getting a refund? It is absolutely naive to think the world works as if what you spend your money should be fault free - you have misunderstood the power - the increasing power - of corporations.

      @@southboundaustral I've been working with computers and tech in general for over 30 years. I also use a fleet of these cameras on a regular basis in the drone industry so it's not like I don't have experience here. GoPro's are joke at this point. If you want to give these corporations a pass and accept spending money on products that only work half the time, that's your choice. I refuse to give this company another dime. People like you are why this practice of using customers as beta testers is so rampant. Manufacturers don't care about releasing flawed products because you've all now made it acceptable to just deal with it and pray a future update fixes it. I cant switch because each one of the alternatives has at least one no go missing feature. Insta360 for example refuses to add time of day metadata to their video files like GoPro and DJI do so timecoding if you have 2+ cameras is a giant pain. DJI is closer but doesnt have a water resistant pass through door for external power, or a wide lens with horizon leveling, no QR code time code sync.
    Also, maybe the Hero13 adding HLG HDR might mean youtubers start using more HDR on the platform. Most of us have HDR supported TVs, phone, and tablets now.

    • @JakeOski

  • @AdarMarmur
    @AdarMarmur 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have been using GoPros whole of my life in real life extreme conditions and sports and I have no idea why you're experiencing so many issues with it. Actually i may have an idea, it's probably an SD card issue, the SD is wrong and it's causing the camera to freeze. Also, check if you have the auto upload option set on, probably thats why the camera switches itself on. Also, a bigger sensor is not necessarily a good idea for action cam because the focus distance will be bigger. Please use SanDisk evtreme pro, the black SD card or reset the camera and see if it solves your issues with it.

    • @JakeOski
      @JakeOski  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's not it, all my cards are high-speed rated. I use loads of different mirrorless cameras, DSLR's, drones (including commercial ones) so I've got a fair amount of experience with this. It's also not the first GoPro that has plenty of issues - never had one that was trouble free or at least not driving me crazy. It's got a lot to do with software and hardware that can't keep up. Maybe in years to come they'll fix these issues but currently they're being left in the dust in the market they've essentially created.

    Would love to stick to GoPro but each iteration gets worse and lags behind the competition. Planned obsolescence is also an unfair trade practice. Like Boeing, maybe GoPro's days are numbered unless management is taken away from the marketing department. Just don’t agree… GoPro have a business model that they need to release a new model every year to be successful so every year there is going to be fairly small incremental upgrades… a smart buyer upgrades every three or four models (it took me a few years to come to that conclusion)…

    • @JakeOski
      @JakeOski  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm there with you, but these upgrades are naff this and the previous year. They're so far behind competition in the market that hey've pretty much created it's crazy. I wish any of my cameras survived 3-4 years by the way 😂 But yeah, otherwise it's a good way to wait a few iterations before upgrading - even then, there are better alternatives for less money nowadays. Like the DJI Action 4 for example. Let's see if GP14 will be any different.

      @@JakeOski In what way are they hugely behind DJI? Clearly Insta360 are mainly all gimmicks and software (I still have the X4 though) but for me and being honest I didn’t buy the 12 as it was just software updates… the 13 has some really good upgrades in my humble opinion e.g. the auto-detect lenses and the super slow-motion features however I feel there is not enough to justify buying a new one and will stick with my 11… I am waiting to see the Action 5 Pro but I also think I will more likely buy a GoPro 14 when released as I expect an upgrade then will be justified…

      DJI has better FOV out of standard lens, 1/1.3" sensor bringing way more light and much more usable footage in lower light scenarios, fast charging and much better battery life, quick mount is included with a cage for horizontal and vertical videos, no issues with overheating.
      On the 13 the new slow-mo is a joke at 720p and the lens... that's a massive extra cost for another thing that can be easily destroyed when using this camera as intended - i.e. for action. For anything else, like vlogging, there are much better cameras out there, even used, that produce MUCH better image & sound quality.

    • @4scottishdogs
      @4scottishdogs 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JakeOski FOV is a personal like/dislike… for me it’s not a reason to say GoPro is behind anyone… low light, yep better performance is it huge no… it’s not like an Action 4 performs like a Sony A7S3! With the new 13 the battery is much improved yet they will still get slated by people because of the change in battery format and backwards compatibility… not a huge issue for me and with the new heat sink they have pretty much fixed the over heating issue indeed latest YT comparison videos I have seen are showing Action 4 and Insta360 Ace Pro over heating before the Hero 13…
      As for the lens issue and your comment about easily destroyed… this is rubbish, from what i saw the Hero 8 had very few people returning the camera or replacing it because of damaged lenses indeed all my GoPros (I used to use them almost daily for action) I never once broke a lens but hey you feel free to slate GoPro for innovating with the new auto-detect lenses… for me I would hold your opinion in much higher regard if you had said the new lens feature is a great innovation but there is no backwards compatibility which doesn’t go down well (you would have made a very fair constructive comment)… On the slow-motion, hmm is it joke, no, it’s GoPro again innovating and trying to find new ways to upgrade the camera that doesn’t bring more heat issues e.g. that’s why we won’t get 8k anytime soon I feel.
      Finally on your comment about other cameras even used for vlogging… seriously? I shoot professionally with a Sony A1 and A7S3 for my work but I would never compare them to my GoPro’s… GoPro’s are fun and only cost about $500 new so yes there are far better options out there!

    Gave GoPro 4 chances (Hero 7, Hero 10, Hero 12, Max) and each, apart from the Max, had its own issues... Hero 7 was the worst of the lot, freezing and doing insane gimmics, Hero 10 and Max had trouble with their gyroscopes, giving me laggy footage in turns, Hero 10 and Hero 12 didn't want to work without battery even when connected to 3A output.
    Also, none of them offers quality night footage even when operated in their night modes.
    I've sold all but the Hero 12 (which I've already put up on sale but noone is interested yet) and decided to use my DJI Action 4 for day footage that involves a lot of movement and rain and my Insta360 AcePro for night footage and everything else.
    Unless GoPro decides to adopt the 1" and fix its recurring issues, it'll eventually go out of business.

    Try selling your OSMO after you use it for a year or two, you'll get nothing - I've sold a few GOpro's after I used them and got at least $ 200 each time gopro retains its value much more

      Most of my cameras are having pretty tough life so not many get to resale stage. Also, we use plenty across our companies so they also have a use in the "afterlife".

    i heard about 12 second on power button to restart camera, but i only heard, I havent so many situation my hero 11 but, but can't tell it never happend and of course I loose footage (but i learned to record small clips). hero 13 was the nail in the coffin for me, because using the same sensor with hero 11 (which is just an extended version of the sensor with hero9? ), the same processor with hero 10, the same screens with hero 9, where with each of these things there are problems and are simply an unfunny joke for 2024 (in fact, they were a joke even in Hero 11). 5 years of using exactly the same camera and changing the housing is disgusting, it's probably even worse than Apple does. a quick realese? after all, this is a modified idea of the "ulanzi 3234" product, which, as I heard, was invented by one of the TH-camrs using dji magnets. Pure cash grab and robbing customers to charge so much money for these accessories, let them spend more on promotion, not on development, this will be their penultimate camera.

      Agreed, it's just a shame that company that started the whole sports POV revolution is getting owned in its market. And nah, I've tried everything to no avail. Got two GoPro's 12 (we use them to record students learning to kitesurf) and they're both just as useless.

    Actually, my opinion is that it's impossible to compete with Chinese companies, so GoPro is trying its best. Chinese companies are supported by the government and they can rely on very cheap labour. Plus they want to kick America's but so much they're very very very motivated in doing that. So is quite a big big challenge for any company. Really it is to compete with the Chinese with the Chinese competition

      Nah, you're good - maybe to DJI for the better sensor but you won't see much of a boost in quality on the 13 vs say 11 that you can get much cheaper.
