I remember hearing that John Carpenter, the director of Escape From New York (a movie that heavily inspired Kojima and Metal Gear), played this and said something along the lines of “Snake finally came back to New York.” Pretty cool if you ask me.
What I love about Snake's speech is how it's almost as meta as the GW codec call, but in a different way. He's not really talking to Raiden, it's Snake basically having a conversation with you, the player. Raiden was always a mirror for the player, but it's at this moment that the ruse is finally fully revealed, and Snake finally has a chance to speak to us directly about everything that happened. It's ironic too, because a lot of what he says is what the players who were mad they didn't get to play as Snake needed to hear the most, and it's like he's consoling them, telling them to find themselves, their own truth, to think for themselves.
3:21 this is a very unnoticed detail When we start a game for the first time, the game will ask us for a name, country, date of birth and gender, as players we think that it is an unimportant survey in the game's plot But if we pay attention to this scene we will see that everything we put in the survey is recorded in the dogtag It surely has something to do with what Snake says to Raiden about choosing our path and decisions

Boris and Sergei Gurlukovich were good friends back during the USSR. The rescued Olga’s orphaned child Sunny and Hal Emmerich adopted her. Sunny had attended school but because of the Patriots experiments on her, she was too far ahead of her peers and only stayed for a year. Thanks to Otacon's connections, Sunny began working for a company called Solis Space & Aeronautics, rather than going for a tertiary degree in computer science. 4 years later Raiden requested her help in getting him to Shabhazabad air base at Pakistan, in order to stop the Colorado senator and 2020 Presidential candidate Steven Armstrong whom at the time was believed along with World Marshal to be planning to instigate an assassination on President Hamilton. She aided Raiden by allowing him to use a Mach 23 RLV so he and his new friend LQ-84i renamed Blade Wolf could infiltrate the country and stop the president from landing there.

This "videogame" has burned into my mind a message of freedom unlike any other art form, it made me question, refine and redefine aspects of my person, giving me a path, this along Persona 3, made me understand how a simple, honest life is all you need. 3:53 Cop kneeling in the top right, you hear a sliding noise, pretty sure he was supposed to be pulling the US flag off Solidus's corpse in the "real" ending
There's a lot of good stuff in this section, but one quote seems to get left behind. "You can find your own name, and your own future. And whatever you choose will be you." It's oddly poignant, at least to me.
There's some grain of truth to this, but it reeks of the whole new age self help "You are what you think" nonsense. If that's the case, then we'd all be what we think we are, but we aren't.
Can you imagine being a voice actor for a metal gear game? Like one who has any extended amount of dialogue? You'd probably be thinking "wtf am I talking about"
This ending won't make sense unless you've had an honest-to-God identity crisis at some point. It's true that reality is objective, but the great thing about people is that we get to choose the way we perceive reality. Not the other way around. You are who you choose to be, not what you think you ought to be given the circumstances. Subjective interpretation of the facts as a way to guide your own moral compass and identity is a valid way to view reality too. It's necessary, in a way. That's what it means to be an individual: seeing things your own way regardless of how you were molded by your environment or genetics. Free will means the ability to recognize these factors and choosing to act with or against them. You can still think of yourself as a bad person, but if you choose to do something good, it's still something good, even if you believe it's only for selfish reasons. You are not a slave to what society, genetics, or your own mind say. You never were.
I agree man, great honest way to put it. Haven't seen anyone else on here explain that it in a simplistic way like that. I've wanted to just didn't know the right words to explain that out because most people don't know or care what you just said. They should because that is what matters in life. Respect
But you are. Everything is based on what came before. Reality runs on cause and effect. I didn’t choose to have a short temper and I can manage it but that doesn’t change the fact that my temper is still the same, I just don’t show it. I don’t show it because my dad would yell at me when I yelled. My experiences and genetics influenced me. I don’t choose my wants or desires. There is a reason why twins who share the same genetics still act similar even if they were raised in completely different environments. There is a reason why an adopted son acts more like their biological dad than adopted dad. If someone was given the exact same decisions with the same experiences and genetics, they would choose the same thing every time. A person could grow a tumor on a part of their brain that makes a pedo (this happened to a teacher who used to be nice to everyone until a tumor was discovered growing on his brain). A man had a metal pipe destroy a part of his brain and it completely changed the man. Your brain picks and chooses what it wants to remember. You hear so many things yet your brain only picks up about 50% percent of it until you become conscious of it. Your emotions are controlled by your body, not you. There’s a reason why people become more agitated when hungry. How you think is determined by your genetics and experiences. Free will is just an illusion, but it’s such a good illusion that it doesn’t matter if you believe it or not.
Vamp: This ending...sob...is so beautiful...what was I supposed to be doing again? Oh wait, I gotta take my nanomachine shot! That's why I can regenerate in the first place!
Fun fact: when at 3:20 Raiden takes off his dog tag I had the name « Raiden » written on it when I first saw this which made me pretty confused when he said « never heard the name before » !
It's too bad that practically everyone have been ignoring this very cutsnece for 20 years and only look at the Patriot A.I. when that wasn't even the point of this or any Metal Gear game. I just wished that people actually took this cutscene to heart but I guess not.
3:59 "We've inherited freedom from all those who fought for it." To my fellow Americans, this Memorial Day let us remember those who fought and died for our freedom. Let us remember with a grateful heart that freedom is never free, and that many before us have paid a heavy price in blood to ensure that freedom lives today. Honor their courage, their sacrifice, and their memory. I, for one, have faith in freedom; it's too precious to take for granted.
This whole game was a dope ass existentialist tale akin to Arthur Camus but involving the Internet and AI and i find it so dope with how relevant it is to our generation.
I'm surprised there isn't more snake AI content in the same vain as the "Master Chief helps you with X" stuff you see. I mean, snake canonically pulled Raiden out of a loss of self identity crisis in the span of a few minutes.
I played this game so many times as a kid not only just to try and understand the ending but also because I would spend hours fucking around with the guards like putting 50 mk.2 bullets in a guy to make him look like hell raiser

While I really like Revengeance, the dog tags scene makes me think playing as Raiden again is, in concept, a bad decision. The dog tags serve as a symbolic link between Raiden and the player. Throughout the game, Raiden represents the player as much as the player represents Raiden. And then, at the end, he holds this link in his hands and decides to discard it. He has had enough of being used as a pawn by forces beyond his control, and that includes the player as well. It's also the game symbolically telling the player, "you are like Raiden, too. Cast aside everything you were told to believe and find out for yourself what's important to you." So it feels wrong to me that we get to play as Raiden again after that moment. Then again, Kojima is partially at fault for this by bringing Raiden back in MGS4. Raiden's ambiguous yet hopeful future was also meant to be our own among but hopeful future as well, and now that parallel is gone now. But I can't help but appreciate the joke: people thought Raiden was lame in MGS2 and didn't like being forced to play as him, then in MGS4, everyone now thinks he's cool but aren't allowed to play as him.
What’s disturbing is that most people are saying the Patriot AI was right while completely ignoring what Snake says here.

3:41 Vamp watching in the background.
Wait, what?
Don't forget 6:17 and 6:32.
Where?
Vamp: This ending...sob...is so beautiful...what was I supposed to be doing again? Oh wait, I gotta take my nanomachine shot! That's why I can regenerate in the first place!
Vamp listening to snakes speech like 🗿
Video games back then had better plots than movies do now
I missed the clocks rolling over to 2024 because I was rewatching this and thinking about a lot of my life. Looking forward to this year!
It's all so dream-like
the whole game really is
I thank any people that worked on this story.
Fun fact: when at 3:20 Raiden takes off his dog tag I had the name « Raiden » written on it when I first saw this which made me pretty confused when he said « never heard the name before » !
1:36 - Snake knows about Matrix
It's too bad that practically everyone have been ignoring this very cutsnece for 20 years and only look at the Patriot A.I. when that wasn't even the point of this or any Metal Gear game. I just wished that people actually took this cutscene to heart but I guess not.
Made me shut my console off in the middle of a mission. Will never forget that😂
They are so good humans for saving sunny at the cost of raiden's body basically
This has aged like fine wine.
this is where MGS should have truly ended.
No
In the timeline, yes. It'd been a perfect ending but if we're talking about releases then it should've ended with the story of mgs 5
MGS3 still had to come to tell Big Boss' story. Other than that, nothing more is needed.
Well it's certainly the ending Kojima originally intended, that's for sure. Not even 3 was really supposed to be made.
Metal Gear Solid ending here would have been like how the Teen Titans cartoon ended and most people just didn't understand the message.
3:59 "We've inherited freedom from all those who fought for it."
To my fellow Americans, this Memorial Day let us remember those who fought and died for our freedom. Let us remember with a grateful heart that freedom is never free, and that many before us have paid a heavy price in blood to ensure that freedom lives today. Honor their courage, their sacrifice, and their memory. I, for one, have faith in freedom; it's too precious to take for granted.
We are actually at the edge right now. World will have to choose between freedom and safety. I'm pretty sure people will choose safety.
@@homoxymoronomatura People will choose what LOOKS like safety. Squeezing something too tightly is just as dangerous as letting it run wild.
@@peelsreklaw Ordinary people will choose what makes them safe. And they will be safe. But there are also extraordinary people who will be imprisoned.
@@homoxymoronomatura I mean, that depends how things go, doesn't it? Lots of ordinary people in Nazi Germany got fucking murdered, so...
MGS3 might be the best MGS game in terms of gameplay. But when it comes to storytelling MGS2 is far superior to everything else.
Big boss: *coughs in being the player and the player as his body double*
7:11 Bro Raiden's such a dork lmao
And the entirety of this beautifully told ending was basically rendered irrelevant in 4. Boy, time has not been nice to that game.
This whole game was a dope ass existentialist tale akin to Arthur Camus but involving the Internet and AI and i find it so dope with how relevant it is to our generation.
I loved this game but I can’t remember why. I think I should play it again
20 years old today
How many people noticed that right before Raiden throws his dog tags, Vamp can be seen in the background standing there watching
That’s the real rose before Jack
I'm surprised there isn't more snake AI content in the same vain as the "Master Chief helps you with X" stuff you see. I mean, snake canonically pulled Raiden out of a loss of self identity crisis in the span of a few minutes.
It’s cool how raiden says sorrow and joy
Wao now that A.I is a thing we use every day hits different
This ending always makes me very emotional
"Now do you remember? Who you are? What you are meant to do?"
3:15 most underrated cutscene
And at that moment he decided to become a cyborg ninja...
oh my god! Quickly pause at 6:17 after Rose says "what's wrong?" You can see Vamp in the background looking at them!!
I'm finally mature enough to respect Metal Gear Solid 2 as a great game.
I played this game so many times as a kid not only just to try and understand the ending but also because I would spend hours fucking around with the guards like putting 50 mk.2 bullets in a guy to make him look like hell raiser
Releases in 2001.
Plays and finishes MGS2 in 2006: "What the heck happened? Waw!"
Seeing 2016: wtf? .......... *looks over at the mgs2 case.
Me: alright now your creeping me out....
Seeing 2020: :0 .......... looks over at mgs2
Me: wtf are you.....
???
@@Melkac Authur Fleck: you wouldn't get it....
your the only one who has uploaded this, thank you
All we are is a collection of memories.
Memes are truly the DNA of the soul.
Gracias por subirlo con subs en español, amigo. Excelente discurso y juego.
I know this is New York but how tf do these people ignore these two crazy looking people in the street?
5:19 Snake’s rapid aging is starting to kick in
Holy shit snake says joy and sorrow that's what I live for after that mgs3 and the sorrow and the joy are ocelot's parents ajahahahah freakin konami
So jack already knew that she was pregnant during the whole mission
I can't say goodbye to yesterday just yet.
