Liquid couldn't do it himself because Sunny completed it, and it was in the hands of Snake, and plus the microwave hall would be a good way to weaken Old Snake for their final fight.
I was unable to play this when it came out and was only capable of watching recordings, but despite that, I think the tunnel part "got" to me more than any other thing in the franchise. That juxtaposition with Sunny and the eggs is just so... gut-wrenchingly macabre.
If you want the roughly Solid Snake Microwave feeling, just walk through a hot and humid location, with a migraine (at its peak). Battling fatigue like that is abysmal.
This series really has something out for Snake and Otacon. Snake repeatedly fights for the right thing, but either gets manipulated or ends up making decisions that have unforseen consequences, both of which make the world see him as a terrorist or a sick monster. And Otacon doesn't get it that bad, but almost everyone he loves in one manner or another, dies. His foster daughter, Sunny, is still alive, but Sniper Wolf had to die for the sake of Snake's mission in Shadow Moses. His sister Emma was killed in the big shell incident after years of not seeing her because of really fucking wrong and disgusting circumstances. Naomi... was really only here to make him cry again which is dumb but still sucks for him. And then there's Snake, his best friend for 9 years, ends up dying from accelerated age and he couldn't do anything about any of these deaths. And that's not even going through the shit they go through on common missions. Snake still gets the worst of it, as you can see here, but damn do they go through hell.
@@weplo1597I mean I feel like they would’ve said something about him being dead in breakpoint but eh people can have their headcanons on who’s dead or not
@@yupyup2347 In actuality it's unclear if Snake died not too long after the events of MGS4, MGR lets it be pretty ambiguous. certain characters uses the present tense and Raiden uses the past tense. Who knows what happened there. And I think that's the best part of it all.
Back in the day, when you first played this part, you thought this was it, you thought it was the end and that's how Snake died. I still remember how sweaty my hands were during that moment! An extremely epic gaming moment. I really like how Kojima laid the ending of the game through a bunch of moments such as this one ( along with the flashbacks, the voices Snake heard from his memory, the return to Shadow Moses, the gradual health decline, seeing old friends and enemies, etc... He stretched it just long enough for us to adapt to Snake's ultimate fate and made us accept that this was truly the last time we'd play as Solid Snake. It was almost like knowing a relative had to die soon and coming to terms with it before it happened. I'm glad Snake's story is over, there is so little examples of this. Most video game heroes, and now even movie heroes never die, not because they are eternal or that we don't want them to die, but more because of publisher/franchise owner greed. They just milk the cow and keep milking it until we get tired of it. Kojima knew better and finalized the Solid Snake story and also tied Big Boss' story before parting ways with Konami. It was a smart move.
To be fair, at the time he was angry and depressed because he thought she had a miscarriage with their child, and then got together with Campbell. He had no idea she and Campbell did that to protect their child from the Patriots. One look at Raiden is enough to see the horrors that they're capable of. Plus just look at how quickly he bounced back to her the moment he learned the truth.
6:12 Solid Snake is a man of focus, commitment, and sheer fucking will. Walking through a long corridor of microwaves, his suit damaged, the Solid Eye destroyed, almost dying, practically at Death's door, and he STILL has the willpower to press on and keep going. John Wick must have taken inspiration from this man, because I can almost see the resemblance.
Ngl, the first time I played this when it first came out and playing through this scene; I was fighting back tears...just seeing Snake go through that and putting his everything into carrying out his final mission, it was hard to watch and play through. Became one of my favourite video game characters ever.
Okay so this has been bugging me for years. Since the MG Mk2 (the little bot) is immune to the microwave hallway, why the hell did Snake have to walk through it? Why couldn't the little dude just go straight to the end and open the door and turn everything off? Like maybe deactivate the microwave hallway so he didn't have to get baked like a beef & bean burrito?
"Ok Snake, I'll upload the virus." - Otacon "Okay. Wait.. so you have to be the one to upload the virus? and you can go all the way through the hallway no problem?? What the fuck am i here for!?!?" - Snake
Pure good cinema. There's some vibes from independence day on the battleship, old Shaw movie's vengeance style of 1 vs pack of bad guys for Raiden, and slow motion back to back John Woo style for Meryl & Johnny.
Everyone feels bad for Snake because of the microwave hallway; I never see anybody sympathizing with Otacon, whom continually loses again and again when it comes to finding love. Sniper Wolf... Naomi... even his little sister. No matter what he does, Hal just keeps losing the people whom mean so much to him, and despite it all he still carries on with such a positive attitude. He never becomes bitter, or spiteful. He's just lonely. I dunno, but by the end of 4, I felt more sympathy for Hal than I ever did for Snake. Not that I haven't shed my tears for him, too.
Such a good scene must be hard knowing you have to do a super dangerous part of the mission and you have to leave your best friend to what you think is their end because you care so much knowing that snake couldn't win against all those frogs and his friend have a family knowing he probably wouldn't have survived the microwaves. Talk about tough choices
it’s all fun and games until you remind yourself that this is a 2008 game. In that year games came out like: Fallout 3, GTA IV, Persona 4, Far Cry 2, Saints Row 2, Left 4 Dead to name the best of them. When you look at the visuals and presentation of those games compared to MGS4 you’d think MGS 4 came out a decade later. Game was too ahead of its time.
If you missed the point of why the Mk2 didnt go alone, its because the mini Gekko would defeat it before it made the connection. The Gekko's unanticipated weakness was that it prioritizes human targets, so Snake went because he could act as bait to cover the Mk2's connection.
@@abcfdeabcwes7300 Exactly this. The world hangs by a thread. The only thing that stops it is a dying man by sheer force of will. And they're none the wiser.
This is impressive watching this game runing today and it stil holds like this. This is impressive on the ps3 itself but at that high res damn it looks good.
This is the thing right, if the corporates at Konami had any sort of intelligence they could do a port for the new consoles and PC. They’ve already got the Fox Engine. All they need is a good developer to port it over. Considering Konami worked with them in the past, Bluepoint games would of been my first choice but now SIE owns them I really don’t know.
I'm not gonna lie, the first time I played through this scene and the screen split in two to show all the other character perspectives, I seriously thought snake was gonna die in there.
It's because this kind of scene that people call the man a genius. It's simple, yet so powerful and emotional. Sharing the pain of the protagonist as your own. It's the torture scene of MGS1 going full circle. For one last time
I know it's fiction and all, but when i feel down or overwhelmed, i think: "Would Snake want me to give up?" "Would he want that for me?" "Did he gave up when he had to go through a microwave hallway that almost kills him?" No sir! He crawled his way through that shit purely out of will and succeeded. If Snake went through that and lived, you can get over anything! Stay strong everyone.
I honestly like how the Octo-camo suit looks like after the microwaves destroy it. The black and exposed grey and holes in the armor really does look good on Snake.
I loved this scene when I first played the game but after this scene I started to realize why can't Snake stay behind and just let Otacon's droid go through the tunnel instead and do whatever Snake was going to do? I mean Otacon's droid was perfectly fine when they both came out the end of the tunnel. Mmmm.
He wants to die. Remember about Naomi told him that the FoxDie started to mutates to the point that it might make him a literal walking bioweapon of mass destruction? It's proven not to be the case by Big Boss in the epilogue, but at this time Snake didn't know that and genuinely thinking of ending his own life for that reason. And this scene is his subconscious doing it for him.
MGS 4 is the game in the series with it's highest highs and it's lowest lows. It is utterly over the top but also at times incredibly nuanced. It's the most "Metal Gear" game in the Metal Gear series if you ask me and I love it.
I know people are talking about MGRR, and it's a great game, but honestly I feel as though it didn't need Raiden to be the protagonist. It felt like this scene culminated in the perfect resolution to Raiden's story. This is Snake, a test tube baby, telling another child soldier that he doesn't have to live his life for war anymore. He doesn't have to be a tool for anyone's sake. He has a wife he can go back to, a home where he belongs. He still has the rest of his life ahead of him. He can put it all behind him. Start over, find happiness and peace. I like to pretend that MGRR happens *before* MGS4, because it feels more intuitive for Raiden to then find his happiness after the end of MGS4.
Solid Snake is a true legend! All the competitor protagonists from other are nuts as compared to him. I love how realistic Snake's story is and I loved how he aged. Very painful, yet his each sacrifice was worth it.
Neat, this confirms that not all curscenes were rendered in-game, the split screen portion of this is very clearly lower res then the bottom half gamepla part
There are a lot of talented game designers in the world but I honestly, many of them don’t quite reach the ingenuity Hideo Kohima possessed in making the Metal Gear Solid games.

@@yupyup2347 Ghost recon and Mgs 4 takes place in almost same year. Snake probably manage to survive for a bit then died after retirement

@@yupyup2347 In actuality it's unclear if Snake died not too long after the events of MGS4, MGR lets it be pretty ambiguous. certain characters uses the present tense and Raiden uses the past tense. Who knows what happened there. And I think that's the best part of it all.
@@mat8791 dunno ghost recon seems to imply he’s still alive
"she means nothing to me now"
also raiden: **is still completely loyal to his wife**
To be fair, at the time he was angry and depressed because he thought she had a miscarriage with their child, and then got together with Campbell. He had no idea she and Campbell did that to protect their child from the Patriots. One look at Raiden is enough to see the horrors that they're capable of. Plus just look at how quickly he bounced back to her the moment he learned the truth.
Even in revengeance he parries a flying kiss from like 12km away

6:12 Solid Snake is a man of focus, commitment, and sheer fucking will. Walking through a long corridor of microwaves, his suit damaged, the Solid Eye destroyed, almost dying, practically at Death's door, and he STILL has the willpower to press on and keep going. John Wick must have taken inspiration from this man, because I can almost see the resemblance.
He's John Wick's father.

MGS4 was a total mess though. It ruined the entire MGS lore for me at that point.

Everyone feels bad for Snake because of the microwave hallway; I never see anybody sympathizing with Otacon, whom continually loses again and again when it comes to finding love. Sniper Wolf... Naomi... even his little sister. No matter what he does, Hal just keeps losing the people whom mean so much to him, and despite it all he still carries on with such a positive attitude. He never becomes bitter, or spiteful. He's just lonely.

it’s all fun and games until you remind yourself that this is a 2008 game.
14 years later and this still looks like a masterpiece
If you missed the point of why the Mk2 didnt go alone, its because the mini Gekko would defeat it before it made the connection. The Gekko's unanticipated weakness was that it prioritizes human targets, so Snake went because he could act as bait to cover the Mk2's connection.

This game was a movie with occasional button pressing.
I know it's fiction and all, but when i feel down or overwhelmed, i think: "Would Snake want me to give up?" "Would he want that for me?" I know people are talking about MGRR, and it's a great game, but honestly I feel as though it didn't need Raiden to be the protagonist.
