They gave him a medal for killing the person he loved the most, they gave him a title that would remind him of that moment, and everyone would know him for that title, a title that would remind him that he was used.
While, the true origin of the title would be forgotten by history, and by all, except for him.
And then, he claimed that same title as his own when he felt she abandoned her identity as a soldier. Only to realize decades later that what she had wanted wasn't to attain more peace, but to preserve the peace they already had.

There's one thing about this ending that bothers me, not so much in the ending itself, but in what it tells. I mean, it pains me to think that there could actually be people like Boss who were forced to die under the public disgrace of treason, but that were actually heroes.

If you really think about it, if Volgin never fired the nuke, the entire Metal Gear series would of never happened. The Boss wouldn't be killed by Snake, and Snake would never become Big Boss which means no Sons of Big Boss.

But to the Boss it was so beautiful that she died because she loved her country and planet so much she didn't want either to be hurt by the weapons of war. Although its sad she knew that she would live on as a true patriot in the eyes of the man she loved most, Big Boss.

You can feel the disgust and betrayal in Big Boss in this scene. Having to go through the charade...knowing all his team and the Government knew and willingly lied to him and sacrificed the Boss.
Having served myself I've seen the Government and many officers turn their back on their own soldiers time and again for petty politics and prestige.

I think the only one who understood Big Boss’ pain was Zero. Once he saw Big Boss’ face as he walked past him, he looks on and appears to close his eyes in grief as well. Good touch for how their future turned out.
MGSVs tapes reveal that Zero absolutely hated that he was also lied to and led an operation to kill one of his closest friends. Its why he stole the legacy for himself and founded "The Patriots".
It all began with a bunch of old fools.
Now they all passed away
Zero tried some much to bring Big Boss back into the patriots. Having members of Cipher to do so but it didn’t work but instead kick start the events of metal gear and it’s sequel.

And even after so much bad blood, zero wanted to protect his friend while they themselves were deteriorating in health.
If you read her backstory you find out that the US treated her like shit and used her like a teenage boy's sock. Makes it even more insane she never once faltered in allegiance to her homeland

The Patriots AI warned you in MGS2. You could've turned off the console.
You can sum it the entire Big Boss's experience here while against Cobra Unit:
He went out and held his "pain" after The Boss betrayed him.
Conquered his "fear" to move forward.
Determined his professionalism to reach the "end".
Endured his "fury" for what Volgin had done.
Overcame his "sorrow".
And killed his "joy" after all he went through.
But he would earn an invaluable ally in "Ocelot."

I love introductory and ending texts/timelines so much for some reason, there's something about them that makes me enjoy whenever they appear in any type of media, be it film, literature or even games.
Naked Snake, Big Boss, the most badass video game protagonist ever created and designed, is manipulated and lied to through the entire game and the end, he returns as a beaten and broken man who's lost everything due to actions he was required to do, that he willingly partook in, and as the game closes, he stand by the grave of the woman he loved, and a single tear rolls down his cheek. That is how Metal Gear Solid 3 ends, not with a bang, not with a whimper, but a sniffle.

To this day, this is still my favourite ending in videogames. We see this man get thwon off a bridge breaking several bones, get beaten to near death, tortured with electricty, having his eye blown off and shot in the leg and it is at the end, while facing the gravestone of his mentor when he finally cries. Plus, for a PS2 game, it's amazing how real Snake's face looks when receives the medal, you can see the contempt.

one of the best endings in any game , and one of my overall favourite game , i dont get how hardcore mgs fans consider v better then this.
I can see why people would call any other MGS their favorite game. But MGS 3 is so far the most polished, roundest game of the series with the most sophisticated overall design. They got every detail right, there are little to no weaknesses.
The other games might be better this or that aspect but have their weak moments. MGS3 delivers a constant stream of quality.

THIS is the moment you could see Big Boss eventually descending into villainy. This is all we needed. No MGS4 retconning his motivation, no Peace Walker trying to make him seem like a hero.
I feel that this makes MGS4 even more poetic in a way, but I agree, Peace Walker shouldn't have been that way.

This is the greatest game ever made. And that's astounding considering how good MGS1 & 2 were. Greatest ending ever. Heartbreaking. Completed it at least 20 times in my teens. Remarkable.

Solid Snake all 4 games are masterpieces but if i had to pick a favorite its mgs1 but the best story goes to mgs 3 i think.
To me MG2 is the best MG game but indeed MG3 had the best story hands down.

And yet apparently this ending wasn't clear enough for people to understand why Big Boss went rogue and set up Outer Heaven and Zanzibar Land and we had to have a whopping 3 "missing links" that did nothing but screw up the canon further and mess up Big Boss' established history.
Is that true? To me this ending make things perfectly clear for Big Boss backstory and motivations behind Outer Haven.

I am at conflict with the current MGS story... i dislike V as a whole, but then again, even before V, i've never thought Big Boss would do something like that. Even if betrayed by his government. He just didn't seem like the person to become "evil". But thats just my opinion.
And if you ask me, why i don't like V... almost no cutscenes, no David Hayter (for obvious reasons), Ocelot seems like a different person, and not like the badass from MGS1/2/3/4. Also, Liquid for pretty much no reason. Codetalker adding not much to the story, Quiet, a sex-sells character with a stupid excuse, Skullface, hardly an enemy to remember, without any great story. Plus, some gameplay stuff, like FOB's, base management, empty open world (no civilians, all enemies, nothing to do in there, no setting up base)

Big Boss was such an irredeemable tyrant in MG2. Literally a warlord/dictator who used war to create war orphans who he would exploit to create loyal soldiers who would help him start the cycle all over again. An endless cycle of misery and manipulation under the guise of a "savior" all to further his own influence and power.
But THIS ending did such a beautiful job of explaining the origin of what created that evil monster. And tbh it's all we really needed.

The Boss is one of the greatest characters of all time. Her sacrifice and the tragedy of her life is so compelling and well-written. MGS3 became my favorite game of all time after playing it, shit felt real. I felt so bad by the end of the game and I just love this series so much, thank you Kojima

The ending to mgs3 absolutely floored me. Very few video games or movies have come close.
That's impossible. Because this is dozens and dozens of hours of game/cutscenes to arrive to this final scene. Starting from Metal Gear Solid 1. And years in the waiting. You can't do this with a movie (a series maybe). But it's very hard to build up the cinematography made by Kojima. That's why I think/hope there will never be a Metal Gear Solid live-action movie.

I'll never forget playing this with my little brother, cheering as we beat The Boss...and then slowly melting into tears. And then "Way to Fall" came on. I had experienced the death of Aeris...THIS was like THAT to my brother, and I'm glad I was there for him. I love you Nic.

I wanted to comment about Eva, but you beat me to it. Her ultra sad voice is what I felt sold the scene, and nobody seems to mention it. Phenomenal acting in the MGS series.

Suzetta Miñet is the pseudonym of an unidentified voice actress who provided the English voice for EVA in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.
Little is known about her. Her absence from Comic-Con preceding Peace Walker's release caused many to speculate that Suzetta Miñet was an alias for an actress, which was later confirmed by David Hayter.[1] Some believed that she was actually Debi Mae West, although West denied this in an interview with Ryan Payton, during the 56th session of The Kojima Productions Report.[2] In an interview with The Codec, West again denied that she was Miñet. However, she did express shock at how similar they sound.[3]
In a separate interview with The Codec, English voice director Kris Zimmerman confirmed that she also knew the identity of Suzetta Miñet, and stated that she didn't know whether it would ever become public knowledge but was not optimistic.[4] Zimmerman also stated that Miñet's use of a pseudonym had nothing to do with Konami and instead was a personal choice of the actress who played the role. She also expressed amusement at fan theories about Miñet's identity.[5]

Also, I really think she nailed the seductress part, too!! I do wish though, that the music was somewhat lower though 6:29 and that the uploader showed the tears running down John/Naked Snake/Big Boss' face. This was the only time a videogame made me cry. This is and will be the best ending of all time till now, and it won't be a better than this one, EVER in gaming history.
The saddest part of this ending is everybody in that room won the war, except for the person who delivered them their victory.
Better then what Ubisoft, EA, Blizzard could EVER write.
And this is how we see how Big Boss' journey is the reverse of Solid Snake's one: Both lost their mentors due to betrayal, but for Big Boss it was the beginning of his journey towards villainy. To Solid Snake, it was the beginning of his journey towards heroism.
*History will never know what she did. Her story...her debriefing will endure only in your heart. Everything she did, she did for her country. She sacrificed her life and honor for her native land.*
*She was a real hero; she was a real Patriot.*
And what makes it tragic is that despite how she was truly loyal to the end, she will forever be remembered as a traitor and monster
My favorite moment in any Metal Gear game, which probably makes it my favorite moment in *any* game, is if you go into first-person view when John salutes her grave. The screen being completely blurred by his tears.
I mean this scene is sad, but I was laughing my ass off when he said, "I hearby award you the title of big boss."

Aside from those goofs in the COBRA unit and Col. Volgin being electrical, this Metal Gear game in my opinion was the most realistic looking game in the series.

The scene is much more powerful when you don't decide to watch Ocelot. Part of what makes the scene so powerful is seeing Snakes reluctance to shake the presidents hand, knowing he now has the Boss' blood on his hands until the day he dies.

The Distinguished Service Cross is the second-highest of the top 10 military medals, behind only the Medal of Honor and is awarded to those who display “extraordinary heroism” amid military operations that involve either a foreign force that opposes the United States of America or in the service of a friendly foreign force “against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.”
Since the US and Russia were not in direct conflict with one another and since Operation Snake Eater was such a top secret black op, it automatically makes Snake ineligible for the Medal of Honor. However, there's more to it than that...
There is no higher decoration in the United States military than the Congressional Medal of Honor, as it's bestowed to military members who “distinguish themselves through conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life and above and beyond the call of duty,” according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Of the 40 million men and women who have served in the U.S. military since the Civil War, only 3,525 have received the Medal of Honor.
It is after EVA's briefing to Snake about the truth of The Boss's mission and how she sacrificed her life to stop nuclear war, that you realize that the reason why Big Boss was only awarded the Distinguished Service Cross is because the true recipient of the Medal of Honor should be The Boss herself for her sacrifice.

I still remember the first time I finished the game way back in 2004. This ending just broke me and still does now. "Her story, her debriefing will endure only in your heart." One of the most heartbreaking lines in all of video games.
The most emotionally affecting part of this whole thing for me is not the iconic graveyard salute, but the scene where the newly christened Big Boss accepts his medal, cameras snapping all around him while he barely manages to put on a face like he doesn't know the truth. Imagine what was going through his head, having to put himself through that fake ceremony held by people who were just toying with his and his mentor's lives all along. His sullen expression right then really sells it well: a man who has just had his entire world broken apart.

It's story telling like this that made mgs5 feel like a disappointment.
I wished that 5 had a final level that was set in 1995 where either you are the rookie of Foxhound Solid Snake or you play as an old Venom Snake and fight Solid Snake until you die

I swear, no matter how many times I finish Snake Eater, that ending will always bring tears to my eyes.
After he killed the Boss He knew one thing, and it was pain
That's the beauty of it, he kills the pain, end, fury, fear and the joy so (like he said in MGS4) he's already dead inside.

This was back when we werent force fed a "stronk womun" character, we were given a female character that we respected for who they were and what their story was. I dont think anyone whos played metal gear has anything negative to say about the Boss, she was a true patriot.

I really like the Boss, especially since her strength lies in being able to hold conflicting feelings and actually be complex, and also not constantly broadcasting how she's mistreated. At the same time, I realize that's probably not a good template for behaviour for anyone, male or female. And also, it's like none of the men working on this had the faintest idea how childbirth works...you can't get a scar like hers from a C-section. Weirds me out every time it gets mentioned.
