As soon as I finished watching this scene, I literally proclaimed out loud that this was the best series of games I have ever played. Still true 12 years later for me. I STILL pick up new things each time I watch it. So interesting, the allusions to the Military-Industrial Complex in particular.
The part that Big Boss didn’t understand was that true peace is achieved when soldiers drop their weapons, particularly of their own accord, expressing true freedom to disobey orders and fall out of ranks, that the world be no more rocked by perverse old men’s wars. This is frightening for man to do, to become defenseless, to risk and even accept death as consequence of voluntary vulnerability. She was a master of disarmament and CQC, because her true joy in war was to see man learn that he and she could be disarmed and not be in fear of dying, accepting that dying could result but hoping that it would not always. The Boss made that choice in the end when she decided her missions were over, not because others willed it so. She could have gone truly rouge like Big Boss would, but she decided that death and all his friends would no longer be her slave master and conquered it. Remember that the freedom call, “Give me liberty or give me death,” is a demand for the oppressor and not the oppressed.
@@bruxinth4660 the "give me freedom" part remainded me of Wolfenstein where Wyatt says it . If only konami gave it more love and remaster it on all consoles. It's a shame it's stuck on a ps3, not everyone owns a ps3 and not everyone can emulate a ps3. Hopefully MGS master collection Vol 2 includes it. Also I would say another great video game ending on par with this is Assassin's Creed revelations where Ezio meets Altair in the library and also speaks with Desmond. That was one of the best ending too. But mgs4 ending is just perfect with how it ties everything and ends the story of big boss and solid Snake.
5:30 People say MGSV contradicts this, and while it may a little, Venom Snake throughout the game receives visual and auditory indicators that what he sees and remembers is not entirely true, and throughout GZ and TPP, lens effects are used in important scenes that have no earthly business being there, to give the effect that Venom is being given artificial memories and thoughts. And by the end of the game, Venom's brainwashing wears off on its own, nobody tells him the truth, and while he may not remember the particulars of his previous life, he knows damn well that he his not John. So they've never been able to turn someone completely into another 100% successfully or on a genetic level.
As someone who started on MGS3:Snake Eater on the HD Collection back in 2011 21:32 made me cry like no other game has done. Metal Gear is the only franchise I would say that is more effective playing it in chronological order instead of release order. It makes MGS4 ending way more definitive and emotional. Let's hope this series get the attention that will always deserve with the release of the Master Collection and the Snake Eater Remake (I hope MGS4 finally leaves PS3 with Master Collection Vol. 2)
@GabrielCyp you can play on release order: MGS1> MGS2> MGS3>MGS4>MGSPW> MGSV Or you can go in chronological order: MGS3> MGSPW> MGSV> MGS1> MGS2> MGS4 There's also the OG MG games on MSX, but those aren't required to play to understand the series. You can look up the story since it connects to MGSV and MGS1
@@CyprousI personally recommend you to play Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake, if you want to see more of Solid Snake and Big Boss as characters, as well as another character very important in Metal Gear Solid 1
What I appreciate about this scene is that they decided to not have Big Boss take apart that 1911 apart like some movies do. 1911s aren’t easy guns to take apart, especially with the barrel bushing possibly flying out from the pressure of the buffer spring.
@@loganross705the pistol in the virtuous mission on MGS3 says its a 1911, but in reality, it's a Browning Hi Power. So you could take apart a Hi Power like The Boss does.

The saddest moment in the MGS timeline. And one of the most legendary. Remember, y'all, this was a LAUNCH TITLE for the Playstation 3. This MASTERPIECE of storytelling and technical achievement. Remember that the next time some AAA hack company tries to make excuses for their poorly polished, $70 turd.
The way that big boss has to use cqc to give solid snake a hug is kinda heartbreaking, reminds me of those soldiers who thought ww2 was still going on years later
After seeing Zero's side of things in the Phantom Pain, this cutscene is wild now. The AI truly was just created to continue his work thanks to Skull Face's meddling, but it got out of control and his infection worsened. While The Boss had died when her will was passed along, Zero got to witness every part of it, and saw just how much it all fell apart.
Because not a single member of Snake Eater team truly understand The Boss. In a nutshell, all of them thought she wish to change the world for the better. A world without a cold war, without war and only peace for the countries and the world. But the truth she didn't want to fight for a change. She just want to fight to keep things as it were. No system control, no super-government entity like Washington, Moscow or an AI of later era puppeting the world as they please.
Big Boss is a real man. Spent his life living through mistake after mistake yet still trying to teach people (mainly his 'son/brother/soldier/clone') to be better people than he was and learn from his mistakes. We can only try to help other generations not to feel the same pain and suffering by showing them our own failures but sometimes lived experience is the best teacher.
I love in the MGSV tapes you get after beating the game, he says refering to Les enfentte terrible: "They're no sons of mine..." But later accepts david, calling him his son ❤
Imagine being Richard Doyle and reading these lines. I’ve been playing MGS games for over 10 years and read the wikis multiple times. I still barely understand what’s going on half the time
Neither Konami, even Kojima understand what they created anymore. Trying to tie up loose ends just created more of them. That's what happened. Even though I like metal gear saga, it's quite confusing sometimes.
@@pedrorezende6444 It's also kind of stupid what the Patriots turned out to be. Zero wasn't even painted out to be an important character who would shape the events of the entire series in MGS3. They didn't even lay the groundwork correctly.

The series chronologically begins with Big Boss smoking a cigar and ends with him smoking a cigar. Yes I know MGR exists but I"m talking about the mainline games.
One interesting thing about the final cut of this game with the japanese dub is that big boss was voiced by Snake's father and as Snake's VA wasn't on speaking terms with his father it actually lead to them reuniting. This was great as it allowed Snake's VA to be there before his father died months later.
I love the small detail when Big Boss ejects the magazine from Snake's 1911 then proceeds to also empty the chamber. I still get so many chills/tears from this cutscene. "This is good........Isn't it?" makes me cry every single time
I love how Zero is the main antagonist of the series, he's the cause of like 80% of all what happened. The Patriots, Les Enfant Terribles, FOXDIE, Shadow Moses, Big Shell, the MPCs, even the events of Metal Gear Rising, all of that and more were Zero's doing or a consequence of his doings. He was the most powerful man in the whole planet. And yet, when we finally meet him, he's a senile old man that doesn't even know where he is and needs a machine to breathe and pee. Is like the Ozymandias poem.
Big Boss tried to make a difference for all soldiers to take down the system. But he couldn’t keep it up because time was the challenge because in that time multiple obstacles were present and different successors could only do so much to keep the original dream alive. The perfect example is with Big Boss trying to fulfill the dream of The Boss but over time his view changed over time and it wasn’t till his final moments he realized what The Boss ideals were the reason to fight
I wish I could play this game and see this ending for the 1st time, I got the game on 2008 but I didn't play it until 2010 because I didn't feel ready. Those feelings and memories will stick with me forever.
It wasn’t a made up story. I’m convinced this is a documentary. The game being a medium through which Kojima is communicating the system we currently operate under
I like how Big Boss calls Zero out on creating the war economy and doesn't mention how himself and Miller and "Liquid Ocelot" were responsible for creating the age of PMCs...
A beautiful thing a lot of people do not know is that the Japanese voice actors for Solid Snake and Big Boss, Chikao Ôtsuka & Akio Ôtsuka, are father and son in real life. There’s something that I’ve been hearing ever since this game came out that apparently this father and son duo were going through some rough shit, estranged or just not on talking terms, and they reconciled due to the voice acting of this game since they had to meet and obviously look at the scene, I mean come on! Fucking beautiful.
Also, Akio is the voice actor of Shunsui in BLEACH. Anyone search his image up - it’s a guy with long brown hair in a low tiny pony, a scuffle beard and is eventually given an eyepatch and scar. I remember so much art came out of Shunsui being BB during that time when he got his eye patch.
Just finished this after finally seeing the other games and man it was a trip. RIP to Big Boss. The Legend Ocelot and Liquid as well. Series wouldn’t be the same without such iconic villains. Also I felt more sadness when Zero died than I cares at all for Naomi in any capacity in this game.
The Boss was a soldier, an agent, and an astronaut. She wanted to share the meaning she found in space, but it was one only an astronaut could appreciate. So, her followers - a soldier and an agent - attempted to interpret that meaning. These misinterpretations plunged the world into endless conflict...
That trip to shadow moses hit me like a ton of bricks. I was playing it next to my best friend who I've known since 5th grade who used to call me for help with mgs1. It was a wild moment to go back to.
Probably the one of the most impactful scenes in all of Metal Gear. The A.I. revelation in 2, this, and Senator Armstrong' rant (being completely serious, even if it's non-canon.) Also, the very last line of the game: "The sun (a new "son") is rising again."😏
I think something that people often misunderstand about the death of Zero in this scene here is that Big Boss isn't choking an enemy, he's holding an old friend in his final moments
5:48 ''Under certain conditions, someone can be made to play a specific role. Act like someone else'' I'm sure Big Boss has plenty of experience with this, considering what he did to Venon Snake. Ps: If Kojima was still with Konami, I really believe he would have made a patch to the then 7 year old game where you could press X to play flashbacks of Venon when he says this quote
The japanese va of snake and big boss are father and son making it more "ironic". As soon as I finished watching this scene, I literally proclaimed out loud that this was the best series of games I have ever played. Still true 12 years later for me.
I STILL pick up new things each time I watch it. So interesting, the allusions to the Military-Industrial Complex in particular.
Great movie. Meh game.

To be honest
The Boss's will, was the world to be no longer at wars, no more conflict, no hatred
True Peace 🕊️
Ironically, Solid Snake and Otacon worked to fulfill The Boss's will without even realizing it.
@@geico15minutes talking about achievement

People say MGSV contradicts this, and while it may a little, Venom Snake throughout the game receives visual and auditory indicators that what he sees and remembers is not entirely true, and throughout GZ and TPP, lens effects are used in important scenes that have no earthly business being there, to give the effect that Venom is being given artificial memories and thoughts.
Let's hope this series get the attention that will always deserve with the release of the Master Collection and the Snake Eater Remake
(I hope MGS4 finally leaves PS3 with Master Collection Vol. 2)
Imagine people who started on 1998 with MGS or MG back on the 80s

@GabrielCyp you can play on release order: MGS1> MGS2> MGS3>MGS4>MGSPW> MGSV
Or you can go in chronological order:
MGS3> MGSPW> MGSV> MGS1> MGS2> MGS4
There's also the OG MG games on MSX, but those aren't required to play to understand the series. You can look up the story since it connects to MGSV and MGS1

One interesting thing about the final cut of this game with the japanese dub is that big boss was voiced by Snake's father and as Snake's VA wasn't on speaking terms with his father it actually lead to them reuniting. This was great as it allowed Snake's VA to be there before his father died months later.
