I bought the steam deck oled but I was struggling with my decision at first because I couldn’t help but wonder if the legion go was a better choice. This review helped me to feel better about my purchase. Maybe if this device gets better design and longevity with battery I’ll get one, but for now I’m staying away.
My steamdeck oled review is coming, so hold your horses 🤓 Legion Go has more to offer on paper, and better if you don't have extensive Steam library, but as you see in the comments, nobody uses FPS feature for instance, which is the key selling point for this console that made it attractive to many. Treat LegionGo more like a small computer in a handheld form. I would wait for next gen at least if you already have steamdeck. Plus steamdeck has a better FPS and battery life in low power mode, meaning you can play it outside longer than others.
@@thechurchofsupersampling I have a Steam Deck OLED and it wins in the areas of efficiency and ease of use despite not having the latest and greatest hardware specs.
@BReal23-qm8hs absolutely! because unlike Legion or ROG, its made with efficiency in mind and as a result gives you better battery life and better image quality even at the lowest power settings. My only complaint about it is the quality of the case and buttons. In 2023 they really could do better.
It's both. Skill is big here as you have to develop a brand new skill which is not applicable anywhere else, unlike what you would have with a controller or a mouse. So question is - is that the skill you want to develop?
@@RomanDoes yeah true today i had an issue with my controllers not working and had to reinstall legion space and i managed to fix it it would be cool if they implemented a way to update all the drivers through that software tho
#3 FPS Mode. So the mode that is unique to the Go, and no competitor has, is not quite to your taste so that is a reason to return it? Sure; better to have no FPS mode than have one that takes a little while to dial in... FPS isn't my thing, but I just finished watching a video from someone who plays FPS above all else and he loves it - the difference? He took the time to try it properly rather than just bagging it so he could put up a video to try to get views.Sure, it is not perfect, and being honest I am only 2 weeks into mine after an Ayaneo 2S and I am still getting used to it, but none of this is reason to return it.
Fair enough. How long are you planning on keeping it? Let's say hypothetically, you keep it for 2 years and get very good at using FPS (which I doubt), what will you do when they discontinue it? These new motorskills you picked up are not transferable to anything else, unless you do flight simulator maybe. So the concept is great, nobody argues about that, but it's not worth the trouble on a long run. Perhaps you have a lot of time to grind it all kudos to you, many people buy these to use on the go (like muself) and who have no time to learn new unnecessary skills like that while looking for a quick dopamine fix. Next point, how many other consoles do you have? Do you have SteadDeck, Rog Ally, or Switch along side it? I just happened to have all of them and didn't miss FPS on any of these. Worst comes to worst I will pull out a mouse. Let's chat in 2 months and see how many times you will end using the FPS. One more thing, FPS was it's main selling point in all of the marketing did. That means someone put a lot of time into developing it, which costs money. So if you are not using FPS but keeping it just because, means you got screwed by big guys selling you something you don't need as that development cost is definitely in the price tag.
@@RomanDoes Thanks for taking the time to provide a reasoned reply. As I said FPS isn’t my thing, and FPS mode didn’t factor into my decision to buy the Legion Go at all. My point was why return something because a feature it has that is unique in the market isn’t to your liking, and you haven’t answered that. You do make a point about the development cost of adding the feature having an impact on the retail price, which might hold some truth were it not for the fact that the Go is price comparable with the ROG Ally, so by your logic Asus must be taking a higher margin than Lenovo? If so then that is all the more reason to support Lenovo, not to return the product. To answer your question I had a Steam Deck, and I replaced it with an Ayaneo 2S which unfortunately was accidentally destroyed, so I replaced that with the Go. I live in New Zealand where the Steam Deck has never been officially sold (despite Gabe sheltering from COVID here) and I paid the equivalent of US$700 for a 64GB model just over a year ago. I pre-ordered an Ally for the equivalent of US$1,000 when they launched globally but ended up cancelling and buying the Ayaneo with 2TB SSD and 32GB RAM for US$1,125, because Ayaneo do a straight currency conversion rather than mark up the price like Asus, or depend on grey imports like the SD and the Go, unless Lenovo formally launches it here rather than saying it is coming soon. When I lost the 2S I bought the Go with a 512GB SSD for US$899. The cheapest I could find an Ally at that time was US$912, and a grey import Steam Deck OLED would have cost me US$1,095. My first console was an Atari 2600, and years later when I bought my next one I went Sega rather than Nintendo. Aside the OG Game Boy I have never had anything Nintendo, and I’ve never had any inclination to buy a Switch, but as you have one I’d have thought you would appreciate the removable controllers regardless of the FPS mode. The Go does pretty much everything the Switch does with the removable Joycons, but the Ally and SD can't. If you argued against the Go due to FPS mode because it forced the controllers to have the asymmetrical button layout (which you mentioned, but didn’t tie back to FPS mode), or because the removable controllers leave no room for front facing speakers that might have made more sense, but you went with FPS not being to your liking, and now your reason for returning it is that it cost more to develop so pushed the price up, when Lenovo charges basically the same as Asus for the Ally - neither make sense, so I still call you on going for views with a sensationalist video title that isn’t backed up by argument. I get that you want to grow your channel and views means monetisation, but unless you provide sound reasoning it's clickbait. Bottom line there is no perfect handheld - the SD's performance is weak, the Ally cooks SD cards, ships with no case, only supports a propriety external GPU, has only one USB-C port and has the poorest of all battery life. The Go isn't perfect either, but it differentiates with a bigger screen (albeit portrait and without VRR), Hall effect sticks and a bigger battery as well as the removable controllers and FPS mode. Ayaneo is expensive for those of you in markets where the mainstream models are cheaper, and the 2S only has a 60Hz portrait display without VRR, but it comes with 32GB RAM and Hall effect sticks and triggers. Ayaspace 2 is also better than Legion Space, and from what I have seen better than Armoury Crate as well. If you don’t like the Go that would be fine, but to suggest it should be returned because you don’t like FPS mode is ridiculous. You're swimming against the current with most of the Legion Go videos recently being reviewers saying how much it has improved already, or that it was better than they thought right out of the gate, and I get that you are doing so for views. The argument supporting your view is incoherent because you’re looking for a way to justify being negative when there is no real reason to be.
sure, let me address that. For me the FPS was that "new thing" that nobody had and promised easy gains in FPS games, at least based on how they advertised it. As it totally makes sense - controller and mouse duo, what could be better? Returns. I travel often, and I need a device capable of supporting that as well, with an average battery life of 3 hours, I cannot justify the cost as it won't serve my purpose, so why keep something that you cannot use as intended. I explained these pitfalls in the Best for Travel Handhelds video. Where Legion Go took the third place due to this. ROG Ally is not my cup of tea either as the battery is even worse, though I like the size aspect of it and definitely will be getting MSI Claw as it seems to combine good stuff from Legion and Ally. Margins. If you look at cost of laptops by Asus and Lenovo, you will see that Lenovo works on lower costs overall as they specialize in low to medium range machines and as a result in 2023 Lenovo shipped over 16 billion units globally while Asus sold only around 1.5 billion. In dollars that looks like $15 billion for Asus and $62 billion for Lenovo. So with that said, Lenovo has better technology and manufacturing access than any other player in this segment. At the same time, Asus has been working hard on marketing and they want to be seen as powerful and beautiful. Which they did achieve pretty well, but really struggle with that Armoury Crate garbage. Basically, Asus today, be it ROG, TUF or any other of their brands, they make really good hardware and struggle with software. So naturally, they have to hike the prices as they want to be in that premium space. I work a lot with market launches for my professional career, and competitor cost is always driving the price range, so even if we assume Lenovo would be losing money on their device (which I highly doubt), they would have to price it closer to their primary competitor - ROG Ally, as there is nobody else they compete against. SteamDeck is a different beast and has a unique market driven by Steam Library, so its not 100% their competitor like ROG. I just released a video about SteamDeck OLED, go check it out, you will see the quality difference between Legion and Deck. Kiwi and Aussie prices are insane, you guys need to move your islands closer to the US! I live in Canada, so our prices are not as good as the Americans get, but comparable. This explains the return hesitance as here in North America we have really good return policies, so if you dont like something within 15-30 days, just bring it back no questions asked. Our religion is consumerism over here lol. Alright, so we are about the same age. Atari was awesome! I hated those stick controllers though, they kept falling apart, but I went for Super Nintendo when it came out which was mindblowing and I really regretted it as all my pals had Sega, so swapping games wasn't easy and this is the reason why I have Switch, Nintendo capitalized on my childhood addiction. However, Switch is not a computer like Windows-based handhelds, it serves pure purpose of giving you access to the games on the go without anything else. Even the graphics, Nintendo learned how to get you hooked without the latest hardware and they do it well as this thing really lasts, 7 hours on one charge on average. Really hard to beat that. Yet in my user case, I barely ever take off the controllers, I still use the originals it came with and if I go away for long, I grab that joycon holder controller it came with. So the only similarity is that both are removable, but will you remove them? Most likely not. So I'm really curious about Switch 2 this year, I hope they choose longer battery than better graphics. Back to FPS. I think I tied the reason for having the asymmetrical button layout to the FPS, which as a handheld, I'd rather have extra buttons at the back than sacrifice it to FPS which still makes these buttons hard to reach. I don't care about the speakers as 90% of the users will use some sort of headset. So FPS is not only not up to my liking, its a marketing gimmick that made this handheld stand out and I'm 95% sure they added it to avoid patent claims from Nintendo. Having removable joycons is also a good way to have replacements and capitalize on accessories like Nintendo does with Switch, one difference though - Switch is one of the best-selling consoles and Legion is just another Windows-based handheld that will be outdated in a year. Look at all the fanboy comments below, they defend having FPS but none of them use it - because it doesn't work! If it was a working concept, all FPS players would jump on it. So I completely disagree with your 4th paragraph, though I see where you try to lead it to. Paragraph 5 - 100% agree that nobody is perfect, however, you have to look at the end-user scenario. For me, I have access to other consoles and can draw conclusions from my experiences with them. At the end of the day. Legion didn't make it any better than others and that's what matters the most, the device has to make the difference to your life and improve it. Many look at this the other way around and try to adapt to the device. FPS is a good example, can you use it? YES! Can it you become good at it? YES! Is it a transferrable skill like you have with controllers or mouse and keyboard? NO! so either have to learn a new skill from scratch or improve an existing one further to achieve the same result. Which one would you choose? I'm the second type. This is why I don't go into tech specs on this channel as everyone seems to be concentrating on the engine while forgetting that there is no steering wheel on that car :) Paragraph 6 - absolutely I'm swimming against the mainstream channels as those guys get paid to say text from a paper. Even if they don't like something they will never admit it on camera. Give me an example of other creators you watched who say it's great! This is how I started the YT channel by listening to big guys and ending up getting garbage. Plus I gave you 5 reasons why I returned mine, and you stuck with FPS. So is it me or you being too attached to your Legion Go and FPS because it's hard to get where you live? Also since when is it negative calling out these issues? I bet you are just too sensitive to other points of view. As you highlighted yourself, you want to stick with the crowd and let them manipulate your mind while they get paid for doing so, while here I am, doing it on my own dime and laying it out the way it is in my experience. So what's negative about it? Be constructive. Here is an example, what car do you drive and why?

@@RomanDoes Switch is totally useless as a desktop PC and is where Legion Go comes in. A lot of people use it as a desktop PC for apps and other things too.
@@RomanDoes Yeah, but at least it's more handy to drag around than a laptop too. Many bought Legion Go as a Handheld/Laptop combo as it's the only handheld suitable for it. In fact Legion Go is a Laptop in a handheld. ;)
@V3ntilator that's the point, it's not a handheld, it's a laptop pretending to be a handheld which in the end doesn't deliver best for either use. As computer it's lacking keyboard, so you have to have one with you, as a portable console it doesn't last long. It's mixed bag of things. Many commenters say that it's so powerful etc. When it comes to portable - it's time it can last that matters. Plus for that money I could get a better laptop with better graphics if I needed one. So same as with that Vision Pro glasses, it attracts with novelty, but I don't disagree with your point entirely.
So they added an extra function as FPS mode, so you end up complaining about the extra functionality that no other handheld has? What a ridiculous review
Do you use that extra fps functionality? It's like a 5th wheel on a car. If you own one, how often do you use it? Think before you leave ridiculous comments
@@RomanDoeshis point is the option is there if u wanna use it. If u don’t like it do not use it….. it’s just there for ppl that want to use it, it shouldn’t warrant as a reason for not liking the device
@emmanuelnyamali3878 lets start with this - where do I say I dont like the device? If some snowflake got his bottom burnt just because I pointed out pitfalls of the device is his problem, not mine. Next, do you know that some cars used to have 5 wheels back in the day, right? How many do you know that kept this feature today? None... same goes for the FPS MODE. It's a good concept with poor implementation. You can beat your head against the wall day long about how "great" it is, it won't make it better because upright controller position of the "mouse" requires training of a brand new motor skill set to be effective and it's a useless skill to develop because it's only used with Legion Go, and once they discontinue it (which they will) all that time and training will go to waste. And last point I want to mention here: having extra functions is not always good, use it or not you can decide on your own, but regardless of that there is a cost built into the device that you as a consumer pay regardless if you use it or not. That R&D cost was not cheap. So who pays it? People like Michael Romeo above with stupid comments 🙄 no other handheld has that functionality because it's doomed for failure. I bet Lenovo put it there to avoid patent claim by Nintnedo. All of it is in the video.
@@RomanDoes You make no sense. It's a unique skill 100%, which will not be useful anywhere else, so what's the point of mastering it?
I bought the steam deck oled but I was struggling with my decision at first because I couldn’t help but wonder if the legion go was a better choice. This review helped me to feel better about my purchase. Maybe if this device gets better design and longevity with battery I’ll get one, but for now I’m staying away.
My steamdeck oled review is coming, so hold your horses 🤓
Legion Go has more to offer on paper, and better if you don't have extensive Steam library, but as you see in the comments, nobody uses FPS feature for instance, which is the key selling point for this console that made it attractive to many. Treat LegionGo more like a small computer in a handheld form. I would wait for next gen at least if you already have steamdeck. Plus steamdeck has a better FPS and battery life in low power mode, meaning you can play it outside longer than others.
Noone bought it for the FPS mode, we bought it for the screen, battery life is hard to match steam deck though
@@thechurchofsupersampling I have a Steam Deck OLED and it wins in the areas of efficiency and ease of use despite not having the latest and greatest hardware specs.
@thechurchofsupersampling oh man, another one... there are 5 point in the video and all of you seems so sour about the FPS mode...
@BReal23-qm8hs absolutely! because unlike Legion or ROG, its made with efficiency in mind and as a result gives you better battery life and better image quality even at the lowest power settings. My only complaint about it is the quality of the case and buttons. In 2023 they really could do better.
I'm not sure if FPS mode is hardware related being bad or just simple skill issue but the other points make sense
It's both. Skill is big here as you have to develop a brand new skill which is not applicable anywhere else, unlike what you would have with a controller or a mouse. So question is - is that the skill you want to develop?
one thing about this device updating the graphics drivers is a pain
That's too, but it's a solvable issue by Lenovo, they just need to spend more time on the software side.
@@RomanDoes yeah true today i had an issue with my controllers not working and had to reinstall legion space and i managed to fix it it would be cool if they implemented a way to update all the drivers through that software tho
Hello how do you proceed?
@@tilu8696 proceed with what?
@@RomanDoes updating the graphic drivers
I respect your opinion, but overall I’m satisfied with it. I mainly play the classic games. I’m not into modern games that much. MAME is the best.
Easily the king of the handhelds right now
Ally X is taking that spot.
This is why I don't go into tech specs on this channel as everyone seems to be concentrating on the engine while forgetting that there is no steering wheel on that car :)
Paragraph 6 - absolutely I'm swimming against the mainstream channels as those guys get paid to say text from a paper.
Yall be writing novels on here lol

Steam Deck is for casuals and Legion Go for PC Gamers.
and both are less portable than 10 year old Nintendo Switch when it comes to the most obvious purpose of both.
@@RomanDoes Switch is totally useless as a desktop PC and is where Legion Go comes in. A lot of people use it as a desktop PC for apps and other things too.
@@V3ntilator if you are buying legion go to use as a desktop pc you are doing it wrong.
It smokes almost every handheld without extra components
Smokes in what way?
The background music sucks, couldn’t watch it all.
Great! Thanks for the feedback. What would be better than the current music?
