Ruger American Rifle .308 sight in and accuracy at 50yds and 100yds

  • Finally got the .308 Ruger American out to sight it in. After about 24 rounds of Wolf Military classic I started having extraction issues.
    Not sure if it was a dirty chamber, ammo sticking, or the extractor having an issue.
    I’m gonna clean it and go out with brass cased ammo and see if it still has a problem.

    Hi Cranky, just a note, your shooting form is much improved but if you go back an watch this video, there is often a lot of barrel jump ( Gun is Too Light ) ! Also on many shots the recoil of the rifle pushed backwards and some type on bolt sticking down from the forearm hit the front rifle rest and pushed it violently backwards ?? I did notice that you gave a thunbs up sign on two occassions, both of those shots had very little barrel jump and did not run into the front rifle rest !! Outstanding video ! I have the axact same rifle !! What I did was fill several condums with BB’s, took off the But plate and added about 3-4 lbs of BB’s, then stuffed them in the stock and screwed back on the Butt Plate ! To add weight to the fore end, I added 2.5 lbs of BB’s to the channels in the fore end and sealed those up with silicone caulk ! Now the Total weight of my 308 is 11 lbs with scope ! Adding this weight greatly reduces recoil making it much more fun to shoot at the range ! Because the fore end in now much heavier there is much less barrel jump !!! This makes the rifle much more consistent and much more accurate !!! If you want to go hunting with this same gun just open the stock Butt and remove the Bb’s !! I used silicone in the fore end because you can easily pry that out until you get a weight that you like best !!! Once you get the right weight rifle you like best, you can seal in the BB’s in the fore end, but that’s a little more complex, not much but some ! Cheers !

      I put weight in the stock- shot it again today, was definitely much better. Still jumped around a bit, but recoil felt a lot better and I had a few good groups

    The reason your extractor got messed up is because you were loading the chamber by hand. Always load the chamber by cycling it properly from the mag. Doing that will mess up any extractor.

    • @crankygunreviews
      @crankygunreviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly, but it had a bigger issue. The spring/ball for the extractor got messed up- it was faulty, I tried taking it apart, and it was definitely faulty, had to spring tension. I don’t think chambering 8-10 rounds without stripping off the mag would break it.

    Im going with the ammo as the cause of the extraction issues. Better quality ammo will probably alleviate the problem. Keep us posted on the results. 🤙🏻

  • @chesterbuck1841

    soviet ammunition and maybe others, with steel cases has a shellac coating on the cartridge, when it gets too warm it will cause ejection problems.....

    • @crankygunreviews
      @crankygunreviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I know but this was the poly coated ammo not shellac coated. The bolt was messed up, Ruger replaced it.

      good to know, I had some that was so bad it would almost not eject at all, I think it must have been an older production. it was in a 7.62 x 39

    Your scope mounts are way too tall. The closer your scope is to the barrel without touching it is better. It allows you to get a proper cheek weld on the stock and more consistency with eye placement.

    • @crankygunreviews
      @crankygunreviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      Congratulations! 🎉 You are the 100th person to tell me that! I actually just put a Magpul hunter stock on this rifle and got a taller cheek riser, so it is proper height now. Cheek bone wraps around the stock at the proper height

      @@crankygunreviews i heard you scopes are expensive as well some ammo, unless you are a hunter in long ranges or for competition it is worth spending the extra mille but just for range shotting and as a hobby I understand complete. I do have the same rifle ,same caliber but in compact 18 inch. I did upgraded the Magazine to AI style and it works much greater than the original. It is my first rifle and I love it. I have not test it out in 100 yards yet or further with my leuopld but I just love it on my wall anyways greetings and enjoy the hobby 👍👍

    • @crankygunreviews

      Thanks for the constructive criticism. Yes I know how, no I don't usually do it. I don;t have a stable enough rig to make bore sighting easy, and I don't have laser bore sighters either. As long as I am pointed in a safe direction, i can usually walk them in pretty quickly... But there are always outliers...

      @@joemorganeatmyshortschannel so the extractor is messed up. It wiggles like a loose tooth. These extractors have a detent ball with a spring under it to hold tension away from the face of the bolt. When you chamber a round, the extractor is in a slot that allows it to move back and forth a bit so it can slide over the rim of the case, and catch in the groove. Mine rotates down towards the face of the bolt, getting jammed and not allowing the round to chamber (like it has too tight headspace because it gets stuck between the bolt and head of the round) and once the bolt closes, it just wiggles around. I contacted Ruger support, hopefully they can just send me new extractors, and I won’t have to send the whole gun back... I hate shipping rifles
