Watching this ten years later and it's still gold
@@prestonkinard4096 Watching this 10 days after your reply, it’s still Gold.
10 months later. Still gold. Just got one in 308 and shot a 3 shot group right at 5/8ths of an inch at 100 yards!!! Paid 375 for it used!!! The action is definitely ridiculously smooth!!! But, I'm not surprised as this rifle is a Tikka T3 clone!!!
Your comment about sights reminded me of something funny my dad shared with me. He was drafted during WWII, had been a squirrel hunter all his life. During rifle training the guy next to my dad was consistently hitting bulls eyes on the first day at the range. The range instructor stopped and praised the guy. He said, "Gee sarge, its easy with this rifle, it's got some sights on it. It turned out his rifle at home didn't have any sights.
wait a min, what did your dad being a squirrel hunter have to do with someone elses newfound ability to use a scope. im confused lol
@@ryswe you see the squirrels had them if they would've been more of it because they didn't but he was.
@@joelarson1733 ahh I see the time for the thing is instead off of the wall for us
Oh, my god, I'm heart-broken that you no longer have "respect" for me. :-) I'm crushed.
You might want to avoid drinking and posting.
No iron sights CAME with this rifle, which is why I thought I might just bow to the demand over the years and finally get a darn scope to have around, especially since I had to buy some sights and get them installed anyway before I could do a video with the rifle. The scope was easier.
Why I actually answer a troll, I'll never know. :-)
While this video is old now, I find it hard to believe you are not a hunter! You seem like you would be. There’s nothing more peaceful than sitting in the woods in the snow with nothing to listen to but the beautiful sounds of nature.
Corey Whitaker I’ve heard the predator version in 6.5 creed is a sleeper and very accurate.
Btw, I love the 270 Win. I’m casually looking for something in that cartridge.
You are a scholar and a gentleman sir. Been following you for a looong time. Learned so much! Thank you!
I own a RUGER AMERICAN In 308 and really shooting this rifle. In 308 the recoil is really mild and can shoot it all day long with no problems. The action on this rifle is a dream and allows really fast follow up shots. I wish ruger would make more accessory's available for this rifle its a keeper.
It's because lots of barrels we shoot are not "free floated." It's doesn't perform magic or anything.
We are sooo envious of your private range! Thank you for the educational videos!
Pathetic review of a 308. Like most of your vids but this is a waste of time.
A private range is the dream.
@Jonathan Smith To be fair he did explain at the start that he was no expert, and that the viewer would likely know more, on this type of rifle.
Jonathan Smith The best thing you can do is stop 🛑 watching his videos, problem solved. Have a good day.
I have a Ruger American chambered in 308. Its a fun gun and its wicked accurate too. Perfect for deer and long range target.
decepticonmaster1 great to here, I'm looking to get one over here in the U.K., what's the furthest you've shot Target?
furthest I've hit was about 800 meters. I'm not accurate at that range to be honest, though, it was really just luck I hit it at that distance.
300-400 meters i'll bulleye it all day.
I sometimes don’t realize just how powerful a rifle is until I see the distance it shoots and the way a 2 liter explodes like that.
That's not even close to how powerful they are. Movies often have the misconception that metal and hard objects are bulletproof, but thick strengthened steel blocks will often look like they've been through a meat grinder after 3 shots from a .308
Although I'm a long time shooter, I came late to your party. I just wanted to say I'm enjoying your videos and easy-going style. Thanks for the videos.
Glad you found us. Now get after that homework and catch up on over 1300 videos. :-)
So happy you found your way brother, welcome to the hickok45 cultist legion in arms
While I've never requested you look into any particular firearm I'm glad you did this one. Thank you
Ruger has the best customer service I have ever dealt with. They don’t ask a million questions they just make it happen
Greetings from Sydney Australia. I held one of these today in my local store, I liked it. Then I found your video, and I think I'm sold on it. From what I gather, nothing drastically special, but for the money, excellent value. This will be my first rifle, as I pick up this hobby. Thanks!
Hey fellow Aussie! Hope the Ruger is treating you well. Love mine in 18" barrelled Ranch version, also 308.
"Hickock45 never quits on a miss, life is good" I LOVE THIS. Something im telling my children and they will tell theirs :)
I have the compact 308 with the redfield. I love the lightness!!! This has become my primary hunting rifle for Whitetail. I can't see myself ever hunting with anything else I absolutely love this gun.
Same here super reliable, accurate, lightweight it kicks pretty good so next year getting a Leuopuld scope and muzzle break for now I got a cheap bushnell for this hunting season but it’s a reliable rifle for sure.
Your videos actually really help me! I'm new to guns and just wanted to say thank you so much! You remind me of my grandmother. And I don't mean that in a bad way! She was very out doors and loved hunting and guns! Very knowledgable and kind like yourself =)
Got to respect the sheer power coming out of such a simple, light thing! Looks like it kicks hard and sends that round down the range with some serious knocking power!
.308 is a no joke cartridge. You could take down a black bear or elk with it.
Just proving further that Hickok45 is the man.
I have the ruger american in 22-250. brand new and it binded up solid after 5-10 rounds. sent it back and they polished the chamber. gave me 5 extra mags for my troubles. it works flawlessly ever since.
Like usual, I'm scrolling around TH-cam, came across gold ol Hickok45 and can't resist to watch it, thanks for doing what you do.
A Ruger American rifle .270 has to be my favorite gun ever, I’ve hunted with it for years and it’s a real reliable rifle.
The sound of that rifle made my heart soar with the eagles
I have one of those in the same caliber. I have had it for about 3 years. I love it . Very accurate little hunting rifle. The one thing I don't care for on it is the plastic magazine it feels brittle to me.
Just purchased this rifle today. Got a Bushnell to mount on it. Thanks for the review Hickok45!
"Maybe I'll become a sniper in my old age" -Hickok45 LOL I love you man!
As a Army Vet, I like the way you walked with the rifle unloaded. I also want to say thank you for the camera work zooming in on the target to show you hit it. I am looking at a Remington 308. It is mag fed just like this one. I also hate scopes, I was trained in 1981 on the M16 and it is just hard to learn how to shoot with a scope.
Recently I've become a big fan of the Ruger American rifles. Nothing fancy for sure, but they just plain shoot. I have them in .450 Bushmaster, .308, .25-06 and just ordered a .243. All have great triggers, are light weight and accurate as can be.
I have one in 30-06. Favorite gun in my collection.
I just passed a Gunshop and held this Rifle and I have to admit it really feels nice , if I were to get another I really think it would be this same Rifle in a 308 .
I'm in love with precision bolt guns. Very fun to reach out and touch at target at 800-900 yards.
I don't know how I missed these videos of you shooting rifles I love this!
You can never do any wrong in our eyes your show is always the best . Keep up the good work and thanks
I have this same rifle and have never missed a deer. Outstanding firearm
@@erikback3144 I would definitely recommend, lightweight and easy to shoot
Get a good scope for it and it will never let you down. I have one in .270 and works great.
@@wyattrichardson6237 Hey I'm from Alberta too! Anyway would you recommend .270 over 308 for my first rifle?
@@ceganc2678 If you take deer, .270 works great, .308 blows some pretty big holes.
I personally enjoy this rifle, i have the 3006 version . Its a sweet shooter, with the right ammo. I can get pretty decent sized groups at a couple hundred yards. And it has a removable bolt , a little wobbly . Ive never had any problems with it.
I literally laughed out loud at the half empty/half full joke. Life is good, indeed. Thank you Hickok45 fam!
Finally the gun makers are thinking about us left handers and one handed shooters! Great review of my favorite gun in 7m08!
I got one for Christmas in .243. This way I can leave my Mauser at home in it's wood stock beauty in 100% stock condition. Since this RAR has a plastic stock weather does not matter and nicks and scratches are not an issue. It is super light weight and while not ideal for bench shooting or nice tight groups it is perfect if you have to carry that thing all day. My Dad got mine on clearance at Walmart for $276 kind of hard to beat at price.
When you look at the price, the size of the cylindrical bar stock action, the beefy bolt, the non-propitiatory non-built in scope bases, the magazine etc.....I think this might be the next Remington 700 in terms of low cost doner gun just for the action. It's bedding block design is simple and genius.
Because it is a cylindrical bar stock action it will be just as easy to true up on a lathe as a Remington 700.
I will admit I am not keen on the plastic in place of the bottom metal but truth be told it is prob. stronger then alloy bottom metal used on a lot of rifles.
Lol, not ideal for tight groups? I’m hitting under 1/4in groups, as well as thousands of other owners, the rifle is deadly accurate, it depends on the ammo you use because each gun likes different types of ammo.
I am from austria and also a proud owner of this fine rifle, completed with a bipod and optics, and it´s a joy to shoot this gun. The only thing which annoys me is the not so fluid and very scratchy feeling when chambering a new bullet. Btw - it´s always a good idea to let the barrel free flowing with a bipod, and not leaning it towards a branch :P What´s also important to mention is the special trigger on this gun, which is also very nice in this price range. Nice to have this small integrated magazine, with one in the barrel, in sum 5 rounds to fire before reloading. Concern to the miss rate in the end of the vid - my experience with this rifle is, when the barrel gets hot, it can bend a little bit on one or the other side, and stops free floating, which changes the aiming/hitting behaviour. I alway check the barrel after a few shots with a piece of paper to see, if the barrel is still free floating or needs a cool down.
I like that you're not cheating and using a bench rest! I'm enjoying watching your video from 8 years ago! Things have changed since then. Not your skills, other things! Glad to see you guys are still cranking videos out!🇺🇲✝️🇺🇲
I have a Ruger Precision rifle in .308 and I absolutely love it.
My cousin John has 2 Ruger American rifles, one a 30.06.
His 06 will shoot 1" groups no problem, they're a great buy.
Just bought mine today! Gonna put a Crossfire II 3-9X40 for it, cant wait to bring it outside to the range!
love your videos hick very funny and good information
A friend of mine has one of these and it's really nice. I am going to look into getting one this summer. As a side, it would be AWESOME to have a shooting range basically right off your front porch!
Ruger makes a fine firearm. I own several. My Ruger P-85 that I purchased in 1988 has thousands of rounds through it with absolutely no issues.
I've got the same rifle, chambered in .30-06. Great, accurate rifle.
@@lessforloans The 30-06 has more power and shoots flatter but the .308 is more than enough for any game in my area along the gulf coast. My gun was a gift.
@@lessforloans depends what brand ammo you buy, 308 and 30-06 are very very close and are used for pretty much the same huntung pourposes
The rifle and scope combination are just about perfect for hunting anything in North America. Most would say you would be under-gunned for the great bears of the North but good shot placement with a quality bullet would do the job in a pinch. The Ruger American has turned out to be a terrific rifle and that leupold 3x9 with the European style reticle is a great scope. I was thinking the misses later in the video were not that far off but seemed to be moving around a little. If I was at the range and having that happening I would check to see if the scope bases had worked themselves loose. I have had that happen before. I live in New Mexico where the spaces are pretty wide open, so a good scope tuned in is imperative for hunting here. Anyway thanks for the video.
you do excellent videos and you make it easy for other people to want to get into into shooting firearms of any kind
Thanks for your videos. As always humble and very educational. Keep up the good work. God bless.
Dude, you kill me......another great vid thanks!
Here's a free floated barrel, so let's rest it against something! Hahaha. Hickock, I love it. Keep up the good work. I haven't watched every single video but I'm pretty darn close to it.
I have this same rifle...got it when they first came out and they were considered "entry level " rifles....I've put many rounds through mine cold and hot bore...its a nail driver...hit good groups with it out as far as 500 yards...you name it...rifle is a pure stud....and the first thing i grab on the way to the deer woods
thanks for your great videos theyve helped pick out several of my firearms
Glad you found us; you have a lot of homework to do now. :-)
Hi Hickok45 I shot my 30.6 Savage rifle day before yesterday at Point 15 mile marker / CENTER POINT 3_12X44 / outside of Astoria Oregon
I thought this would be a firearm that I would finally be better than Hickok with, a scoped rifle. But as always, he is just a great shot with it as with everything else he fires. Hats off to you sir!
Because your Honest & up front & a no BS type of guy,Everyone else that watches you respects you & your opinions.
What amazes me is how quickly a few shots from this thing shreds stuff like tempered steel and body armour. I don't shoot at anything living but I shoot at objects quite often, and blocks of steel look like they've been dropped on an industrial grinder after 3 shots from a .308
I own a RUGER AMERICAN in 308 and really love the RIFLE. My RIFLE is groups 3 inches at 400 yards with few problems. I can shoot the 308 all day without pain and the ammo is really affordable. I really like the American and hope Ruger makes for accessories for this nice rifle. I will never sale my AMERICAN.
My apologies if someone has already mentioned this in the 1800+ comments below -- that's a free-floated barrel. You should support the rifle on the forearm of the stock or your otherwise defeat the purpose of free-floating the barrel, which is to avoid introducing adverse qualities to the natural harmonics of the barrel.
I'm not a hunter and will never shoot a bolt action rifle as much as my AR or GLOCK but I'm a big fan of quality in my firearms. I have a friend in Alabama who runs a hunting camp and if you have the money he supplies all his customers with model 70 Winchesters in 30.06 and a deer to take home as well as professional guides along with serving everyone breakfast, lunch, and dinner....basically a camp for real hunters and city folks like myself and after several phone conversations he stated for the price point and what I'm trying to accomplish you can't go wrong with the above mentioned Ruger as well as a decent scope for under 1000 dollars. This man has been doing this stuff for over 50 years and since I have no interest in shooting Elk or Black bear in North America I decided to go with the .308 as well....Great video!
I've got two ruger Americans and i love them. I have had no problems at all from them
In my experience, the Ruger American .308 is an excellent inexpensive rifle. I consistently get half inch groups at around 100 yards using Remington Core-Lokt ammunition and a Vortex Crossfire 2 scope. The only complaint I have is that, after 20 shots or so, my shoulder becomes very sore and I wake up with bruising the next morning; and I'm considerably larger than most men. I'll probably buy a Limb Saver butt pad before next season.
A respectful review. Your years of experience is well absorbed on this end. Thanks for your time. EB
Thank you for the update brother ! I'm going to go and get one in 308 win I love that cartridge !
I have the ruger american in .30-06 and in .308. GREAT HUNTING RIFLES!!!
Blazing High yes, but when you find them on clearance for $200 each brand new u buy as many as you can! hand them down to my sons
Which one do you prefer? I cant make up my mind on the 308 or the 30-06. Plus the cheapest i can find is like $420 in cali lol.
Onelung I prefer the .308.....but only for the sole reason that everyone and their brother has a .30-06 and I like to be different. both shoot just fine. I dont hunt anywhere that gives me over a 100 yd shot
Onelung I'd go with the 308 even though they shoot and kill the same but the 308 is gonna be lighter so that's a bonus too
I have one in 30-06, shoots well enough for me. I'm very happy with it.

Glad you went back!
I've never seen anybody rest the rifle on the barrel and stay very accurate
When he's inviting me to walk with him, he reminds me of Mr. Rodgers, except a Mr. Rodgers I'd like to hang out with.
I bought the Ruger American as the "Go Wild Camo" last year... and it´s great!
Whenever I wanna buy a gun, I instantly check to see if Hickok has reviewed it
With the Remington recall on the 700 series of which the rifle goes off by itself I see Ruger catching up a little.
I can't say that Remington 700's have a problem. I have owned more than a dozen of them from .222 to .300 Mags and have NEVER had any of these rifles going off by themselves. I currently own a Remington 700 Classic in .30-06 and have killed several deer with it with No Problems what so ever.
Definitely not saying Remington can't make a great firearm. I'm sure they do. But that's a serious issue if there are a good many 700 series rifles going off without even touching it and if it only costs Remington 10 cents per rifle to fix, and they don't and they ignore it for years and years and years, which they did, while men women and children were being killed through their negligence and chase after the bottom line, then I think I can find other better options other than a 700 series.
CDubs HasIt I love my Ruger American in 30-06 but in all fairness I saw where at least one of those Rem. 700's had the trigger modified by a non-gunsmith. Those little parts of the trigger mech. are probably shaved pretty good at the factory for weight. So someone comes along and shaves more off to the point that maybe the trigger becomes unsafe. There is a matter of close tolerances from the factory to keep in mind.
Why would anyone buy anything but a Browning? Take that all you wannabes.
Never rest the barrel on your shooting platform. Especially if it's a free floating barrel like most rifles have. It throws off the vibrations and accuracy by a large margin the further out you're shooting.
Thanks for the review Hickok I'm getting a Ruger American 30-06 which I was buy purely on the fact that I like Ruger and the fact they have always made good guns watching this just but me at ease about my purchase as I hadn't heard much about the Ruger American rifles.
Just some advice. Mine is chambered in 3006 and it doesn't like hornady SST 165 gr. at all. Hope that comment saves you 30 bucks if you see it in time. I love that round in other rifles Because it does a number on deer but the American doesn't like it.
I'm using Winchester 30-06 sprg 180 grain as I am hunting wild boar but thanks for the heads up cause some did suggest the hornady rounds so I'll make sure to avoid them with the american.
I have a ruger .243, and it was actually my first rifle, but it is super comfortable, wish I could get out to shoot more
I would be honoured to have him in my zombie apoc team

As always Hickok is entertaining, and I enjoy seeing guns I am not familiar with being shot.
All your misses were to the left. A bit of windage adjustment with the dial to the right (2moa+) might have worked the magic 👍
It's a rifle I have been considering to purchase among several .308 bolt guns.
Thanks much Bill for the great vid.

Thanks for the video... I’m impressed with the rifle... Merry Christmas to y’all... Happy New Year....
Nice thing about the chambering in the 308,223/5.56 is that the ammo you can find anywhere you can find deals on it and and get in bulk
I just bought this rifle today for the upcoming deer season nov. 9th, i have high hopes for my first .308
I have one 308 also very smooth and accurate I take deer and elk with it every year also a few bear you would never tell this gun $450 vs one that is $1250.
I bought one of these in .243 with a factory installed Redfield scope. Very nice, basic, light, accurate firearm.
I bought exact same model/caliber at Wally for under 300 bucks(clearance). Didn't expect much, but was pleased to discover a 1 MOA shooter. It is now topped with a 1-4 trijicon and is my go to close up rifle. Only issue : that weak kneed forearm... flexes big time. I free floated barrel and had to open up channel larger to account for the flexing. Listen up Ruger!
