yeah I like how they start this prologue...this is the core idea of this episode... that old guy told Reiner Annie Berthold his story before suicide not because he want to ask for forgiveness about he abandon his children to Titan mouth, but rather a judgement form someone similar to his kid. Now Reiner who want to swallow gun are the same, he no longer in need to seek forgiveness but Judgement from at least one of the victims of his deed, Eren. And the Judgement Eren has for him is...... Declararion of War...how ironic...because that what they did on Paradis without declared war beforehand.
Maybe, but the writers didn't use that quote from Bertholdt to talk about Reiner. That was in reference to Erin. Erin needed to talk to Reiner so that someone could understand what he was about to do, and for someone to judge him. If that wasn't what he wanted, he'd have left Reiner to the Scouts to trap like they tried to do with Peick and Galliard.

@@Md-rb9rv eh I wouldn't go that far. He is very unique when it comes to protagonists in general. Few turn to being a villain like he did, like full on. I would say Darth Vader is probably the only other notable example to the extent that Eren turns into a villain of something to that extent. By the end you're not supposed to like him. That's the point. But that makes the journey all the more intriguing and interesting IMO. To go back and notice things you may not have taken note of before but in season 4 they mean even more for Eren and his friends.

The part where Willy says, "I was born into this world" causes Eren to pause for a moment. You can see his eyes widening. Crazy attention to detail. Also, did anyone notice how Eren scratches his ear the same way Zeke does when he is lost in thought?
Can you please provide the timestamps of when eren does that? I read somewhere that the ear scratch was a hint to their pointy ears as an Easter egg that connects the brothers but I never recall seeing eren doing that..
This episode catapulted AoT to completely new heights. As much as I appreciate episodes like "Hero", "Midnight Sun", and so many other brilliant episodes AoT has produced over the years, in my humble opinion "Declaration of War" is the greatest piece of writing thus far. No other scene exemplifies the complexity behind AoT's phenomenal writing better than the conversation between Eren and Reiner. Eren is no longer doing this out of revenge. He is doing it because he doesn't feel like he has another choice, just like Reiner all those years ago. He has come to understand the desperation behind Reiner's actions. If Reiner and Eren had met under different circumstances they could've been friends. But the ideological, political, and emotional baggage between Eldians and Marlyans has left them with no other choice.

OR use Zeek (This is an assumption of mine that Eren isn't partnering Zeek, but using him instead and will discard him later) who have people that Infiltrated Marley and use them to destroy Marley and use the Rumbling to deal with the world later (I still don't believe that Eren-I'm-free-because-I-was-born-into-this-world Jeager would ever take anyones right of having Children, it's just doesn't make any sense). So, the choices are: 1- Sacrifice his Queen and long time friend. 2- Rebel against Paradise and destroy Marley and use the Rumbling to scare the world into submission. I really want to know what other choices does he have. I Personally would never choose the rest of the World who would never in a Thousand Year see me as more than a Demon to be eradicated (which, to honest, I don't blame them considering what The Eldian Empire presumably did) over my Queen and Long-Time Friend Historia. NOTE: I'm not trolling here, I REALLY want to know what other choices does Eren have and what would you have done in his shoes. AND please no Manga Spoiler, Because Everything I said comes from The Anime. SO If you can't put an argument without using information from The Manga, then just say so PLEASE.
Not to mention multiple flawless transitions between their dialogue and Willy’s speech, for instance: when Reiner begs Eren to end his misery the scene immediately switches to Tybur saying something like “But I do not wish to die, because I was born into this world”. Then just when Willy says “I invite you to join me” in reference to joining forces of all nations against paradis the show follows it with Eren reaching out his hand to Reiner to help him stand up. All of those serve purpose of stessing just how different the directon and intents of both sides are. Brilliant writing, nothing less.
The reason Willy is so scared of Eren, is because he read a report from Reiner that mentioned Eren used the Founding Titan to control Mindless Titans. But unlike everyone else in the Marley government, Willy knows that only the Royal Family can use it. So in his mind, there is someone capable of using the most dangerous weapon in existence without falling under the First King's brainwashing that forces pacifism on its user. Literally the worst thing possible in his mind, as someone who agrees with Karl Fritz that Eldians deserve to die..
Besides Willy’s selfhatred thoughts of the eldians, his reaction and worries is actually very understandable. According to the report by Reiner, a traumatized child soldier who vowed vengeance against the “titans” holds the trigger to a world ending weapon. Reiner was 100% correct in that eren is the worst person to hold it because he just might pull the trigger.
Just to be clear, the titans inside the 50 meter walls are 60 meter colossal titans, just like Berthold. It's just that their feet are buried 10 meters in the ground. It's hinted at in that dreadfully long mid-card in the season 1 finale with the miner who was digging under wall Sina but only kept finding more wall.

these girls are one of the most genuine people to watch this show, i like how they understood every characters emotions as compared to others who simply get overly excited that eren transformed as if its a “cool scene”.

Reiner always remembered Eren's words, "I'll try to make you suffer and die." I think he had been waiting for Eren to judge him, as Reiner tried to commit suicide and remembered Berthold's story. Eren's word "I'm the same as you" is a very deep word whose meaning changes many times as you read it.
The way Reiner breaks down and just pleads to Eren kill him cuz he can't take it anymore and Eren replies with "As I thought, we are the same.". Eren is tired. Eren is ashamed. Eren is in pain. That smiling, dreaming Eren died long ago, just like Reiner. But no matter what, he keeps moving forward and fighting for what he believes.

@@Endisfree_ I would also say that Eren also wanted to be a hero like Reiner. Of course freedom was part of his motivation, but both Eren and Reiner saw the world in a "black and white" way when they were kids, and they wanted to join the "right side" of history, stand out and be recognized by people. But I think Reiner's need to be that "hero" was stronger, because he was a child with a fucked up life, that would only fix itself if he became this great hero. His father abandoned him and his mother only used and sacrificed him as a tool to have a better life (In terms of family, Eren's life was better... until the tragic day his mother and father died because of the invasion). So he had this dream to become this hero (which was implanted into his mind mainly by his mother) because he believed it would make things right on his life. People would recognize and respect him, his mother would give him thw wished validation and his father would somehow come back to them. Well, that was how things started, I won't even go into how Reiner's need to be "the hero who saved the world from the demons of Paradis" became an even bigger mess after Marcel's death, which created this guilt and strengthened his motivations because he didn't want to allow Marcel's sacrifice for him ending up being for nothing (he didn't understand why Marcel put himself in danger to save someone like him, who in his own view was a pathetic guy who only became a warrior because of a lie, so now he also needed to give himself a validation for that).
I'm glad they caught the change in Eren's face when Willy said "because i was born into this world". Also about Eren in the early seasons, while he was struggling to understand Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie remember how hurt he was about finding out their betrayal. He was more focused on killing every Titan which was understandable but one of his defining qualities was always caring very much about his friends and comrades.
I believe he did try to understand but he couldn't since he not yet unveil the truth about the "humanity" he presumed initially is actually the common despicable enemy of all humanity abroad.

Simple minded? All he knew from an early age (obviously eldians we're being brainwashed back then as well) was that Titans came through the wall and ate his mother. So he thinks Titans are the enemy. Then he realizes of the existence of smarter Titans and sees that they are humans, but want to capture him, so now humans are the enemy. But there is no way anyone could comprehend why with their current information, so why would anyone expect him to react any differently at the time?

@@hustlehumbly6169 Remember that the war between Marley and the Mid-East Allied Forces was due to the whole world discovering that Marley had lost 2 titans (the Colossal and the Female) in the failed mission to steal the Founding titan, and the Mid-East Allies thought that it was the opportune moment to exploit the Marleyan weakness, who had been doing a colonial expansionism since Marley won in the Great Titan War. If the enemy knew that low blow suffered by Marley, so would the citizens of Marley themselves, especially if one of the lost titans was the Colossal (the only one capable of destroying an entire city in a moment), because after all, that war lasted 4 years.
*“Declaration of War”* Well, this is it. One of the most anticipated episodes of all time. And it didn't disappoint. It was a masterpiece. Might be the greatest Shingeki episode perhaps? The tension was incredible. The dialogue was perfect and the way it developed Eren and Reiner was just phenomenal. And those last 5 minutes. Do I even need to say anything? Everyone's talking about it. #DeclarationofWar actually trended on Twitter a day before this episode aired, and some politicians tweeted and were confused as to why (LOL). It truly is as good as the hype. *"I'm the same as you."* One of the truest and most impactful quotes ever. Just remember how much Eren hated Reiner. Now he's admitting their the same. Eren forgives Reiner. Their dynamic is impeccable and flawless. *"I'll just keep moving forward"* Yes Eren. Yes you will. And we'll keep watching as this show goes down in history. And this episode proves that the war has only just begun.

I remember watching this w my son. He’d read the manga. I was in tears w Reiner, my old fav, talking w Eren. When Eren says, “maybe I’m the bad guy.” I looked at my son, tears in my eyes, and said: “seriously? Have we been rooting for the bad guy in the end?!” This show is amazing at making both sides seem human. There are no winners in War. I’m going to rewatch the entire series to prep for the end. And I just started the manga!

Bertholdt first understood the man wanted to judged, he was under immense stress even greater than Reiner at that time because he directly killed a lot more people. Reiner's multi personality disorder was in a way protecting him but Bertholdt was completely exposed to his guilt. After Bertholdt's death, Reiner must have realized what Bertholdt really meant. His multi personality finally shattered after Bertholdt's death.

There is no fairness there. Whole world has been taught from little that people from Paradis are devils (while Paradis people didn’t know that there are other humans in the world as well). Could you live like that? The whole world was preparing to kill Paradis people, every single one. So, Eren knew that in order to protect his own people who were good to him and raised him is to kill everyone else off. It was a choice between his people and the rest of the world and he chose the first option.

You gotta ask yourself the question (as Tybur), why it is taking so long for them to attack? Was eren controlling Titans a fluke then? What is their idealogy now? Maybe the Island wants peace? Should we hold an unofficial meeting with their leaders? There are 100 things that he could have considered but we didn't get to see... So if Eren attacks while Willy declared War, I see it as a fair move.
@@asp2410 simply because they think, that the devils of paradis are just prepare themselve to attack because they literally just recover 20% of their territory inside the wall + outside . all the scouts ships sent to paradis was vanishing and probably destroy. its like when the colossal and the armored have waiting 5 years while they can just destroy all the gates and let the titans do the job in not even 3 days . so did they ask themselve these questions ? did you ? they know that they have propabably some time but not know how much time (and probably praying for get more time or maybe that they never coming back) and when they going to attack but they have to make a decision quickly because bcs who know what gonna be the decision from the other side. ( like jean when he was going to be killed by the girl he spared but she hesitated leaving armin time to shoot, maybe if armin hadn't shot she could have spared jean, or even helped them and even become their friends, or the next second she would have stopped hesitating and could have pulled the trigger and thus killed Jean) . They have to make a choice with what they have and knew, specially about the opposite side and possibly before them when we talk a war and a fucking possible apocalypse.
I love how Eren attacking as soon as Willy declaring war can spark debates in the community. I mean, Willy declared it, Eren made his first move... Killing the leader, sounds fair to me.
Willy's plan was essentially to save Marley and solve all it's problems by throwing Paradis under the bus. As we've seen Marley is getting weaker since they've already lost 2 titans during the Paradis operation and now other nations are starting to surpass them due to technological advancements. Marley is an empire that's on the brink of collapse. Which is what Zeke and the warriors discussed in their meeting, since if Marley is defeated or conquered by outside nations there is nothing to stop those nations from just outright genociding the Eldians and eradicating them for good. Marley's treatment of the Eldians is abhorrent and disgusting but at least Marley has a use for them, which is why the warriors believe Marley becoming weaker threatens their existence. As Willy and Magath talked about, Marley has been on a nonstop warmongering path ever since they defeated the Eldian Empire. Because of this Marley has far too many enemies which is especially bad now that they're getting weaker. The reason Willy decided to step forward now after a century of the Tybur family doing nothing but living in luxury was because he figured in order for Marley to be saved they needed a scapegoat to get the world on their side, hence the festival. Uniting the nations of the world including enemy nations like the mid-east alliance they were fighting at the start of the season, making them believe Paradis poses and immediate threat of the world being destroyed, helps throw the heat and attention off Marley onto Paradis. Which then gives Marley time to restructure their military and develop technology so they don't fall behind other nations. Plus with the help of other nations they can successfully conquer Paradis and capture the Founding Titan like they failed to do by themselves. And once they've got the Founding Titan their nation will no longer be in peril and they'll be able to keep their position as the world superpower. Essentially Willy's plan is to save Marley from all it's current problems by redirecting the world's attention onto Paradis island to give Marley time to regain it's strength instead of having to fight constant wars with enemy nations. Also by making Eren Jaeger and specifically the devils on Paradis the soul enemies of the world, it may somewhat improve the reputation of the Eldians in Marley and around the world, since they'll die in this attack by Eren Jaeger and become martyrs showing that the Eldians outside of Paradis aren't on the same side as the ones on Paradis and will show to the world that they're also in this struggle against the devils of Paradis.

Eren and Reiner, two sides of the same coin...if not for the history of Eldians and the world, they would've been the best of friends. And honestly, this was one of the best scenes of the story for me! Just so much complexity and yet understanding and growth was shown in this one conversation between our main protagonist and antagonist. Especially on Eren's side. He now understands the whole story of the other side and Reiner as well and yet, he has to keep moving forward. When Willy said how he didn't want to die despite his sins simply because he was born into this world, I loved how we got to see Eren react with some kind of emotion for the first time! Thus far, he has not reacted at all with anything. Even with Reiner's confession. But in that moment, he finally broke that cold mask he had on. Then when Willy made the declaration of war, you can even see a bit of sadness on Eren's face. The realization that he really has to go through with what he's about to do. It's so sad and tragic all around...
This episode is a masterclass in creating tension. While still very messed up i can totally understand why Eren did what he did this episode. Like he said to Reiner he understands the situation after living on the other side, it's not about taking down the bad guys or him taking revenge anymore. He waited for Willy to declare war and by attacking first he basically chose the casualties of war to be on this side instead of the people of Paradis. He feels like he has no choice but to keep moving forward, not just for freedom sake but to protect his friends and the people on the island.
It's funny how most youtubers have their intro before showing the actual reaction and pre-discussion, but with Lola and Milena is just like: Hi guys. Straight to the point lmao I love them.

Oh my God, girls. I reviewed a bunch of recorders to experience the same emotions again that I experienced when I first viewed them. There are so many people who hype on AOT simply because it's a popular TV series. But he had sunk so deeply into my soul and no one shared my feelings. I'm so glad I found your channel a couple of months ago. I watched every episode from beginning to end with you and your reasoning. However, I am Russian and do not understand English as well as those rare statements in your native language, but I am so glad that I can share these emotions with someone else. The rollercoaster of emotions that is this episode was so felt in your reaction. THe way the hope rises and falls and rises again - and ultimately turns to despair - is what makes this episode so powerful.
I mean marley declared war first, marley attacked paradise first by destroying the walls. Marley pretty fucked it up themselfs. Now they get what they deserve, unfortunately many "innocent" people have to die due to Marley being cowards..

One point that you guys had missed was that Eren changed his mind after seeing Reiner admitted all the faults to himself. Reiner made Eren realize that they are the same not because they both were pushed by the world they lived in, but it’s their own desires made they commit evil acts. To Reiner, that desire was to become the hero, to Eren, it was to be freed

It's heartbreaking to know that King Fritz actually had a guilty conscience, but it's hard to know what to feel in this episode because there's a looming sense of dread for both the world, and for Paradis. The writing in this story is so damn good. Even Jean's stance in Season 1 Episode 16 was thrown back at him by Floch in Season 3 right before the coronation ceremony. "If we're going to die, we should at least know what we're dying for." Now, Eren's "I'm the same as you", hits the same way, but much, MUCH stronger. There's a comprehensive review of the whole series that says (WITHOUT SPOILERS): "Reiner, the Shield that was forced to attack, and Eren, the Sword that was tasked to defend."

It's heartbreaking because people were lied to about it. If King Fritz was the one who wanted peace in the first place, the world, and Marley wouldn't have enough justification to basically enslave the Eldians that didn't make it to Paradis when Fritz built the walls. They were minding their own buisness and some douche bags from marley came and kicked their walls down. Willy neglected to mention that in his speach.

The soundtrack that played when Eren transformed is “two lives” a soundtrack centered around Eren and Reiner. It played during their first match. (It also sounds like 2volt which played when Levi faced the beast Titan but they are slightly different.) I think this was to show how things have come full circle. Eren was forced to wield a shield while being an advancing spear and Reiner the actually shield of Marley was forced to an be an advancing weapon. Now Eren is attacking and Reiner is defending. Perfectly balanced. As all things should be.
To me this is where MAPPA really got me hooked like they completely capture the feel of this show in its own unique way, I was thoroughly impressed with the palette design.
With the anime series and the manga i think i have watched/read AOT like a billion time, and basically it never gets old. I love both of you because you’re genuine, and i am too, i still feel emotional even if i basically know every lines in the show. The most amazing part of this story, the rumbling was actually foreshadowed all the way back in the last episode of season 1. When Eren went berserk fighting Annie, and he said “I am free” for a split second, the screen flashed and in the background it showed multiple legs made of muscles.
That's one of these facts about the show that make it soo special. Just everything is in sync and it's like "full circle". Something that you can say about literally everything in Aot...! Best show ever! 😁💯
I just love the timing of that episode. Like how Marley was talking about them constantly going for war will be their destruction. Then literally seconds after they declare a new war, eren shows them what war will look like. Its such an amazing and intimidating moment, where Eren shows the threat that they are unleashing by declaring war
If you have watched Game of Thrones. It's something like Dany attacking kings landing.. the heavily fortified city facing dragon fire for the 1st time... Marley is only used to unleashing titan attacks . This is their 1st experience on the receiving end

I like the way you ladies were speechless for 20 minutes after seeing the end of the episode. The just like the way eren transformed which they weren’t expecting that way right under their noses, it was epic. And he waited for willy Turber to declare war on the people of paradise before he transformed.
This is my favorite episode of any show of all time. I legit start shaking with emotion and anticipation partway through, even though I know what’s going to happen. I’m glad you are thinking hard about each episode and appreciating the emotional value of each episode.

Eren didn't attack beacause Willy declared war in this episode...It was already decided by Marley about 1 year ago when scouts went to Marley to talk to them (ch.123) and that's when Eren left them...It will be on part 2

that old guy told Reiner Annie Berthold his story before suicide not because he want to ask for forgiveness about he abandon his children to Titan mouth, but rather a judgement form someone similar to his kid.
Now Reiner who want to swallow gun are the same, he no longer in need to seek forgiveness but Judgement from at least one of the victims of his deed, Eren.
And the Judgement Eren has for him is...... Declararion of War...how ironic...because that what they did on Paradis without declared war beforehand.

Erin needed to talk to Reiner so that someone could understand what he was about to do, and for someone to judge him. If that wasn't what he wanted, he'd have left Reiner to the Scouts to trap like they tried to do with Peick and Galliard.

I would say Darth Vader is probably the only other notable example to the extent that Eren turns into a villain of something to that extent. By the end you're not supposed to like him. That's the point. But that makes the journey all the more intriguing and interesting IMO. To go back and notice things you may not have taken note of before but in season 4 they mean even more for Eren and his friends.

This episode catapulted AoT to completely new heights. As much as I appreciate episodes like "Hero", "Midnight Sun", and so many other brilliant
episodes AoT has produced over the years, in my humble opinion "Declaration of War" is the greatest piece of writing thus far. No other scene exemplifies the complexity behind AoT's phenomenal writing better than the conversation between Eren and Reiner.
Eren is no longer doing this out of revenge. He is doing it because he doesn't feel like he has another choice, just like Reiner all those years ago. He has come to understand the desperation behind Reiner's actions. If Reiner and Eren had met under different circumstances they could've been friends. But the ideological, political, and emotional baggage between Eldians and Marlyans has left them with no other choice.

In reality he have another choice; Sacrificing Historia and turning her into a Stupid Titan and using the Rumbling to scare the World into submission. OR use Zeek (This is an assumption of mine that Eren isn't partnering Zeek, but using him instead and will discard him later) who have people that Infiltrated Marley and use them to destroy Marley and use the Rumbling to deal with the world later (I still don't believe that Eren-I'm-free-because-I-was-born-into-this-world Jeager would ever take anyones right of having Children, it's just doesn't make any sense). So, the choices are: 1- Sacrifice his Queen and long time friend. 2- Rebel against Paradise and destroy Marley and use the Rumbling to scare the world into submission. I really want to know what other choices does he have. I Personally would never choose the rest of the World who would never in a Thousand Year see me as more than a Demon to be eradicated (which, to honest, I don't blame them considering what The Eldian Empire presumably did) over my Queen and Long-Time Friend Historia.
NOTE: I'm not trolling here, I REALLY want to know what other choices does Eren have and what would you have done in his shoes. AND please no Manga Spoiler, Because Everything I said comes from The Anime. SO If you can't put an argument without using information from The Manga, then just say so PLEASE.
Not to mention multiple flawless transitions between their dialogue and Willy’s speech, for instance: when Reiner begs Eren to end his misery the scene immediately switches to Tybur saying something like “But I do not wish to die, because I was born into this world”. Then just when Willy says “I invite you to join me” in reference to joining forces of all nations against paradis the show follows it with Eren reaching out his hand to Reiner to help him stand up. All of those serve purpose of stessing just how different the directon and intents of both sides are. Brilliant writing, nothing less.
The reason Willy is so scared of Eren, is because he read a report from Reiner that mentioned Eren used the Founding Titan to control Mindless Titans. But unlike everyone else in the Marley government, Willy knows that only the Royal Family can use it. So in his mind, there is someone capable of using the most dangerous weapon in existence without falling under the First King's brainwashing that forces pacifism on its user. Literally the worst thing possible in his mind, as someone who agrees with Karl Fritz that Eldians deserve to die..
Besides Willy’s selfhatred thoughts of the eldians, his reaction and worries is actually very understandable. According to the report by Reiner, a traumatized child soldier who vowed vengeance against the “titans” holds the trigger to a world ending weapon. Reiner was 100% correct in that eren is the worst person to hold it because he just might pull the trigger.

Of course freedom was part of his motivation, but both Eren and Reiner saw the world in a "black and white" way when they were kids, and they wanted to join the "right side" of history, stand out and be recognized by people.
But I think Reiner's need to be that "hero" was stronger, because he was a child with a fucked up life, that would only fix itself if he became this great hero. His father abandoned him and his mother only used and sacrificed him as a tool to have a better life (In terms of family, Eren's life was better... until the tragic day his mother and father died because of the invasion). So he had this dream to become this hero (which was implanted into his mind mainly by his mother) because he believed it would make things right on his life. People would recognize and respect him, his mother would give him thw wished validation and his father would somehow come back to them.
Well, that was how things started, I won't even go into how Reiner's need to be "the hero who saved the world from the demons of Paradis" became an even bigger mess after Marcel's death, which created this guilt and strengthened his motivations because he didn't want to allow Marcel's sacrifice for him ending up being for nothing (he didn't understand why Marcel put himself in danger to save someone like him, who in his own view was a pathetic guy who only became a warrior because of a lie, so now he also needed to give himself a validation for that).

Also about Eren in the early seasons, while he was struggling to understand Reiner, Bertholdt, Annie remember how hurt he was about finding out their betrayal. He was more focused on killing every Titan which was understandable but one of his defining qualities was always caring very much about his friends and comrades.

If the enemy knew that low blow suffered by Marley, so would the citizens of Marley themselves, especially if one of the lost titans was the Colossal (the only one capable of destroying an entire city in a moment), because after all, that war lasted 4 years.

Well, this is it. One of the most anticipated episodes of all time. And it didn't disappoint. It was a masterpiece. Might be the greatest Shingeki episode perhaps? The tension was incredible. The dialogue was perfect and the way it developed Eren and Reiner was just phenomenal. And those last 5 minutes. Do I even need to say anything? Everyone's talking about it. #DeclarationofWar actually trended on Twitter a day before this episode aired, and some politicians tweeted and were confused as to why (LOL). It truly is as good as the hype.
*"I'm the same as you."* One of the truest and most impactful quotes ever. Just remember how much Eren hated Reiner. Now he's admitting their the same. Eren forgives Reiner. Their dynamic is impeccable and flawless.
*"I'll just keep moving forward"* Yes Eren. Yes you will. And we'll keep watching as this show goes down in history. And this episode proves that the war has only just begun.

I remember watching this w my son. He’d read the manga. I was in tears w Reiner, my old fav, talking w Eren. When Eren says, “maybe I’m the bad guy.” I looked at my son, tears in my eyes, and said: “seriously? Have we been rooting for the bad guy in the end?!” This show is amazing at making both sides seem human. There are no winners in War. I’m going to rewatch the entire series to prep for the end. And I just started the manga!

Reiner's multi personality disorder was in a way protecting him but Bertholdt was completely exposed to his guilt.

Could you live like that? The whole world was preparing to kill Paradis people, every single one. So, Eren knew that in order to protect his own people who were good to him and raised him is to kill everyone else off. It was a choice between his people and the rest of the world and he chose the first option.

I mean, Willy declared it, Eren made his first move... Killing the leader, sounds fair to me.
Willy's plan was essentially to save Marley and solve all it's problems by throwing Paradis under the bus. As we've seen Marley is getting weaker since they've already lost 2 titans during the Paradis operation and now other nations are starting to surpass them due to technological advancements. Marley is an empire that's on the brink of collapse. Which is what Zeke and the warriors discussed in their meeting, since if Marley is defeated or conquered by outside nations there is nothing to stop those nations from just outright genociding the Eldians and eradicating them for good. Marley's treatment of the Eldians is abhorrent and disgusting but at least Marley has a use for them, which is why the warriors believe Marley becoming weaker threatens their existence.
As Willy and Magath talked about, Marley has been on a nonstop warmongering path ever since they defeated the Eldian Empire. Because of this Marley has far too many enemies which is especially bad now that they're getting weaker. The reason Willy decided to step forward now after a century of the Tybur family doing nothing but living in luxury was because he figured in order for Marley to be saved they needed a scapegoat to get the world on their side, hence the festival. Uniting the nations of the world including enemy nations like the mid-east alliance they were fighting at the start of the season, making them believe Paradis poses and immediate threat of the world being destroyed, helps throw the heat and attention off Marley onto Paradis. Which then gives Marley time to restructure their military and develop technology so they don't fall behind other nations. Plus with the help of other nations they can successfully conquer Paradis and capture the Founding Titan like they failed to do by themselves. And once they've got the Founding Titan their nation will no longer be in peril and they'll be able to keep their position as the world superpower.
Essentially Willy's plan is to save Marley from all it's current problems by redirecting the world's attention onto Paradis island to give Marley time to regain it's strength instead of having to fight constant wars with enemy nations. Also by making Eren Jaeger and specifically the devils on Paradis the soul enemies of the world, it may somewhat improve the reputation of the Eldians in Marley and around the world, since they'll die in this attack by Eren Jaeger and become martyrs showing that the Eldians outside of Paradis aren't on the same side as the ones on Paradis and will show to the world that they're also in this struggle against the devils of Paradis.

It's hypocritical and just as terrible as what the Marleyans are doing to the Eldians, as we'll see in Paradis over the rest of the season
Eren and Reiner, two sides of the same coin...if not for the history of Eldians and the world, they would've been the best of friends. And honestly, this was one of the best scenes of the story for me! Just so much complexity and yet understanding and growth was shown in this one conversation between our main protagonist and antagonist. Especially on Eren's side. He now understands the whole story of the other side and Reiner as well and yet, he has to keep moving forward.
When Willy said how he didn't want to die despite his sins simply because he was born into this world, I loved how we got to see Eren react with some kind of emotion for the first time! Thus far, he has not reacted at all with anything. Even with Reiner's confession. But in that moment, he finally broke that cold mask he had on. Then when Willy made the declaration of war, you can even see a bit of sadness on Eren's face. The realization that he really has to go through with what he's about to do. It's so sad and tragic all around...

This episode is a masterclass in creating tension. While still very messed up i can totally understand why Eren did what he did this episode. Like he said to Reiner he understands the situation after living on the other side, it's not about taking down the bad guys or him taking revenge anymore. He waited for Willy to declare war and by attacking first he basically chose the casualties of war to be on this side instead of the people of Paradis. He feels like he has no choice but to keep moving forward, not just for freedom sake but to protect his friends and the people on the island.

Reiner made Eren realize that they are the same not because they both were pushed by the world they lived in, but it’s their own desires made they commit evil acts. It's heartbreaking to know that King Fritz actually had a guilty conscience, but it's hard to know what to feel in this episode because there's a looming sense of dread for both the world, and for Paradis.
The writing in this story is so damn good. Even Jean's stance in Season 1 Episode 16 was thrown back at him by Floch in Season 3 right before the coronation ceremony. "If we're going to die, we should at least know what we're dying for."
Now, Eren's "I'm the same as you", hits the same way, but much, MUCH stronger. There's a comprehensive review of the whole series that says (WITHOUT SPOILERS): "Reiner, the Shield that was forced to attack, and Eren, the Sword that was tasked to defend."

It's heartbreaking because people were lied to about it. If King Fritz was the one who wanted peace in the first place, the world, and Marley wouldn't have enough justification to basically enslave the Eldians that didn't make it to Paradis when Fritz built the walls. But because they were lied to about it, making Fritz a pure evil guy that required a fake hero to be "defeated", then Fritz made a false promise to flatten the world, it made everyone scared of Eldians even more.
However, kinf Fritz wiped the memories of his subjects on paradis to keep them from the hatred, so they coudl live in ture peace, have a normal existance.
In my eyes the people of paradis became innocent and void of any beef between marly and the Elidans. As Kaya pointed out, sure her people might have done bad things in the apst but the ones alive on Paradis havent done anything. They were minding their own buisness and some douche bags from marley came and kicked their walls down.

The soundtrack that played when Eren transformed is “two lives” a soundtrack centered around Eren and Reiner. It played during their first match. (It also sounds like 2volt which played when Levi faced the beast Titan but they are slightly different.) I think this was to show how things have come full circle. Eren was forced to wield a shield while being an advancing spear and Reiner the actually shield of Marley was forced to an be an advancing weapon. Now Eren is attacking and Reiner is defending. Perfectly balanced. As all things should be.
To me this is where MAPPA really got me hooked like they completely capture the feel of this show in its own unique way, I was thoroughly impressed with the palette design.

The most amazing part of this story, the rumbling was actually foreshadowed all the way back in the last episode of season 1. When Eren went berserk fighting Annie, and he said “I am free” for a split second, the screen flashed and in the background it showed multiple legs made of muscles.
That's one of these facts about the show that make it soo special. Just everything is in sync and it's like "full circle". Something that you can say about literally everything in Aot...!
