In this video I will be demonstrating a simple & beneficial exercise that creates containment, regulation and ease in the body, especially when we are feeling anxious, overwhelmed or stressed. I think you’re really going to find this helpful.
This is a self holding technique (that I learned from Peter Levine) that you can do anywhere & can help you to feel more contained, anchored in your body and help to calm the nervous system. It’s a simple practice of crossing our arms and ankles in a particular way.
This technique helps us feel, maybe for the first time in years, “contained.” It helps us become aware of our container. The body is the container of all of our sensations and all of our feelings; it’s all in the body.

is it helpful in shutdown response also?

Without knowing why your system is shut down, it’s a bit challenging to answer the question. But in general with shut down, we want to bring some mobility into the system like movements of joints, and/or yoga, stretching. If I were going to use this containment exercise for shut down, I would use it in a way of giving myself a compassionate, supportive, hug, and feeling what it’s like to be supported in my challenges and how I feel. You also might be very curious about what’s underneath the shut down. It could be some fear or unprocessed emotions. Try to befriend the feeling of shut down and be curious. Hope this is helpful. Be safe and well.

      @@naturalbodhiwellness8960thank you for the reply.
yes i have long term stress in the past and because of that my nervous system has gone into the shutdown state. and the problem which created that stress is still not completely resolved. i think thats why i am stuck in this shutdown response.
i am trying yoga , breathwork exercise and grounding exercise. anything else you can recommend me ?

Why you should cross the ankles?

Simply put, it creates another point of containment which includes the bottom half of the body.
