I used to be really good at keeping my feelings separate from my husband's feelings, but the pandemic and us being together 24/7 has deteriorated our boundaries.
I have had depression and crippling anxiety for over 5 years now and my partner has grown very weary with my symptoms. I can tick every box in this video with exhaustion and irritability being the worst factors. I was looking for a video that can help her to understand and cope with my condition and I haven't found any as good as this one. It helped to bolster what I have been telling my partner for years about flight or fight, tiredness, lack of motivation etc. It is very difficult for someone in a relationship to deal with someone with anxiety and I think this short video has said more and explained how to cope better than anything I have ever read or watched. Thank you so much.
On Friday my girlfriend and I had a date night in during which she gave me the rundown on her particularly hard week especially at work. She is experiencing a lot of anxiety over things that in my mind really are nuanced and in my opinion and from my point of view the things that are bothering her are annoying but should not lead to anxiety. I wasn't necessarily giving her advice I was just telling her that my only reaction to the situation is that I don't want to let it bother me, so I don't. Well she told me today that she did not like me saying that and it was hurtful. She said it was like telling a drowning person to swim harder. Of course that makes perfect sense to me; if you want to live you will swim harder. But to her it was hurtful and the wrong advice to give somebody who is dealing with anxiety on an almost daily basis at this point. I have absolutely no clue how else to help her other than just listening to her and not giving advice
Thank you for watching and for sharing. It's important to start by acknowledging her feelings and expressing empathy. Instead of offering advice, you might say something like, "I can only imagine what it's like for you, and it's hard for me to see you struggling." This approach validates her experience and shows that you're trying to understand her struggles. By focusing on empathy, support, and understanding, you can help your girlfriend manage her anxiety at work while also taking care of your own emotional needs.
Hey, just a tip, google "active listening empathy" and you'll find resources. When someone tells you something vulnerable, they're not necessarily looking for advice, they just want to be heard and acknowledged. You ask if they want an opinion. Otherwise, just be there. Another thing, people with anxiety can't control (without focused work on therapy) the anxiety they feel, it's a disorder, anxiety is a physical reaction which causes distress and physical pain. Yes, physical pain. It involves your body being flooded with neurotransmitters that do all kind of disruptive things to you. In that analogy, imagine that you can't swim harder because your body is freezing up and your muscles are tensing and your feel faint. That's a more correct analogy.
I'm really struggling with my partner. When she goes into a panic attack, the blame is always thrown my way. It gets personal and to my shame I react. How do I cope and still show love and care for her in that moment?
I think the sudden change or withdrawing, isolating. Also makes me super mad when too anxious to hangout with me or spend time together but can go to a football game or dinner for work or show up to his kids soccer game. I know I'd show up for my kid no matter what too but it doesn't make it easier when they say it's nothing you did.
Saying no to everything. Never wanting to be together with other people. Constantly saying "It doesn't matter" or "I don't care" as a way of keeping their feelings manageable. Anger/aggression being the "go to" emotion when feeling any strong emotion. Offhandedness. Irritability. And it's impossible to cope with everything always being about them.
I’ve learned that when I am awake and present in the morning moment by meditation, daily exercise, with a balanced weighed, low calorie intake, it immediately improved my psychological trauma response reactivity levels.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It sounds like you’ve put a lot of effort into the relationship, and that’s no small thing. Supporting someone with anxiety can be incredibly challenging, especially when it feels like the same patterns keep repeating. It’s understandable that after years of trying, you might feel exhausted and need time for yourself. Remember, taking care of your own emotional well-being is just as important as supporting others. It’s not about fault; it’s about finding what’s healthy for both of you. If you ever want to explore strategies or resources to help navigate these dynamics, feel free to ask. Wishing you peace and clarity. How did you navigate these difficult moments when anxiety and conflict arose?

Me too! Teachers and actors these days try to impress you with how fast they can talk to where you can't keep up in any meaningful way to absorb and enjoy eating (applying) the information to yourself.

If you are in a relationship with someone with anxiety, what symptom of theirs do you struggle with most, and what strategy helps you cope?
Me, the irritability is probably the worst for anyone I interact with.
