@@droobers1314 Phantom had their own sound and power, playing outdoors, in Denver air, unamplified, on two-valve horns, with a smaller line. Still won brass that night. Phantom FTW.
Crown and Phantom. I am old enough to have seen and loved Phantom Regiment's 1978 show. IMHO Both Crown 15 and PR 78 should have been the World Champions in those years.
The Glassmen clip was about Beethoven going deaf during the years he was composing that symphony. Also our composer hide a little bit of Russian Christmas music in it. Still gives me the chills all these years later
Seriously, Gmen absolutely killed it but you really have to know the context. Side-by-side with other corps their arrangement sounds downright awkward, but I promise from the audience that night it was anything but!
2015 Crown wins this one. This hornline handles everything it's given, and the GE....I had not seen this performance before now, and oh my. 1978 Phantom gives Crown a run for it's money here. But I give it to 2015 in a squeaker. 98 BK and 2005 BAC are decent performances. Wasn't at all a fan of Glassmen's interpretation. That said, all well performed.
I marched with PR in the year of 78 (as well as others).......I loved Wrens 9th. I will say I loved the Blue Knights rendition of B's 9th.......well done corps......and the tradition and power behind the Boston Crusaders........My Goodness..........these were all wonderful
I agree. I thought the year Crown actually won they should have been second, and this was the year they placed second but should have won. I guess technically each of those two corps has won the right number of championships, just the wrong years.
Regiment. Not only was the arrangement fantastic but the guard's precision was fantastic. For GE I'd say it was Crown but a lot of that is because it still feels and sounds modern and with large props is visually stunning. Overall for me it's still the Phantom Regiment.
If you are just going from musical arrangements I would go Blue Knights 98 Boston 05 Crown 15 Glassmen 06 Phantom 78 If you add visual for total package I have a tie between Crown and Boston. All versions are great and very different.
PHANTOM!!!!!! Simple. Straight forward. Powerful. The other corps muck the music up too much. If I remember correctly this was the first time flags were changed in the middle of a performance, and when the Beethoven flags popped up the crowd went wild! I wish the cameras would have done a better job covering the flag change.
I really want the Blue Knights to do well. I have been a fan since I lived in Denver. Why can't they kick it up a few notches and get out of that perpetual 8th, 9th and 10th place finish they have been stuck in for DECADES!
I think there have been many years they have been underscored. They were breaking top 5 during finals week around 99/2000. Then they did Cartoon, and the judges trashed them the next 5 years. Blue Knights Shostakovich shows in 2002 and 2006( if my memory is correct on the years) were 2 of the most amazing drum corps shows. No one has impressed me performing Shostakovich as much as Blue Knights have, their arrangements were just stellar. Fear and Trembling just blew me away. I would love to see BK slide into the top 3 at some point. Regardless of score or placement some of their shows have been in my top 3 a few times.
All good, and man, do they all sound like shows from their eras. Crown's hornline is the titz, always and forever until something drastic happens, but I'm going with the corps whose version was so definitive no other finalist wanted to touch it for 20 years. (Plus, they sound that good playing on 1978horns.) Phantom FTW.
Crown '15 was great, but the Glassmen one was interesting-for a minute there it sounded like the Charles Ives version lol...not saying that with disrespect....I like Ives but that was unique what the Glassmen did with it...
I'm sure what the Glassmen did musically would make more sense when watching under the context of the full show but that clip by itself didn't sound any good. But yeah, Crown for sure.
The show was "Mystery and Madness" and had various Beethoven segments. As Beethoven went deaf just before writing the 9th, the Gmen show portrays him getting tinnitus and going deaf during the segment shown here. Thus the going out of tune (playing in multiple keys at once) and taking away the low end, then high end just like real progressive deafness. You hear a bowed zilbell and keyboard frame and "whale song" on a concert bass in the pit right as the last of his hearing goes away.
Ok, I'm a phantom Phan, so, from this list, it's obvious... But, I'm sort of wondering why Glassmen 1995 isn't on this list. So much better than some of the others here...
Crown, Boston & Phantom in 3rd. Glassmen? Sorry, but they re-wrote the song so much you couldn't recognize it despite the cool silent seconds before the big blast.
That's supposed to represent Beethoven getting tinnitus and eventually going completely deaf. The polytonality is the beginning of his hearing going; the low and high frequencies are taken away, and there's a foley effect in the pit to show the final wash of his hearing leaving forever.
Boston 2005 visually, as its closer drill, visuals, flags were outstanding, imo. Crown was ok, but I've seen the Crown visual at the end with their " crown" design as the closer for years now so its getting a bit stale now for me visually. Musically, I would go with PR's rendition, as its the most accurate to the original composition, and 2nd to Crown because... well.. brass.
Come on, you’re comparing almost 40 years of drum corps. Trumpets vs bugles, Raw power vs amplification. Blue knights were the best. I could only imagine what that performance would would be like with today’s standards.
@@MemphoMello09 people think that just because the front ensembles nowadays use electronics that brass has no power anymore. These are the same people who only watch the shows online and ignore all lot videos to assemble their opinion of the entirety of DCI's current state.

Impossible to say. There are 3 distinctly different DCI eras here.
Hands down, ‘78 Phantom…the symphonic sound and power can’t be beat!!
CC beat it in 2015 tho

CROWN!!! But dang that Phantom hornline was POTENT
potent when you have a summer to clean high school level material, the notes on the page, says the unapologetic '78 SCV lead baritone

Crown, although the section right before the shown segment is even better, with amazing precision by the brass.
Crown, especially with that amazing Brass feature at the beginning of the closer, let’s not forget the killer intro at the top of show too.
How in the world do you have this song but don't have Cavaliers doing it in 1999? The debut of the "Diamond Cutter" maneuver!!
1978 true to the original! Thank you Mr. Wren!
1978 Phantom. Pure, joyful power.
Coordination and presentation goes to 👑 (great visuals), but for sheer power it is Phantom all the way.
Imo
1. Crown
2. Blue knights
3. Boston
4. Phantom
5. Glassmen
Contrary to popular belief, that Gmen clip was awesome!
Crown definitely wins, but PR was pretty crispy as well…
It’s a strong CROWN for me! 🏆
Crown 2008 also had this in it, but overall I'd prefer Inferno! 👑👑👑
four count flag change.....game over! 1978 Phantom Regiment

Crown!
Crown takes it...but not by a lot; PR closely on their heels, and I think I read it in these posts, but Glassmen WERE intriguing.
This is my ranking:
1. 2015 Carolina Crown
2. 1978 Phantom Regiment
3. 1998 Blue Knights
4. 2005 Boston Crusaders
5. 2006 Glassmen

5. Glassmen
Chills from Crown but the Glassmen show is intriguing
rip glassmen
A very original take expressing Beethoven’s hearing loss.
I heard all of these performances live and it’s not even close: Phantom Regiment 1978!
Jim Wren’s arrangement for Regiment is the most true to the original. For the purity of their performance, they get my vote.
Not even close: Crown!!!
If you are just going from musical arrangements I would go
Blue Knights 98
Boston 05
Crown 15
Glassmen 06
Phantom 78
If you add visual for total package I have a tie between Crown and Boston. All versions are great and very different.

crown. not even close
Their articulations sound so crispy when they arent in a dome

Crown by a mile but man I mis Glassmen.
phantom and Boston
Considering the quality of the horns, PR by a mile.
I’m sorry, did you just say… PR from 1978 had better hornline quality then cc 2015 here? I want what you’re smoking.
@DECLAN DOUGAN Ooooooooooooooooh ok
Cmon now… PR all the way!!!
Phantom was the only one that did true justice to the piece. Crown was okay but the arrangement was lacking.
I mean, they kinda just changed it to 12/8.
Really close between glassmen and crown. And I'm a huge crown fan

Crown is modern and sadly visually predictable that year. Phantom was doing the same things comparatively in the late 70's. Ironically.
Crusaders had a good drill, but the music was an unidentifiable mess….ditto for the Glassmen
The Glassmens' show was all about Beethoven and decided to add some weird parts to simulate Beethoven's hearing loss.
