- Fragmento de la película "Amor Inmortal". Escena en la que Gary Oldman (que interpreta a Beethoven de manera magistral), toca al Piano la Sonata "Claro de Luna". En él se describe a un Beethoven atormentado y asustado por su incipiente problema con la sordera y con su trauma infantil. A su vez podemos ver como su prometida y el padre de ésta, escondidos en un armario, espían al músico a modo de prueba, para comprobar si de verdad podía seguir tocando el piano y componiendo música. Hecho que toda Viena ponía en duda en esa época, ya que "un Músico que no puede oir es lo mismo que un Pintor que no puede ver"

It brings me to tears whenever I play Moonlight Sonata. To know that Beethoven lost his hearing and still was able to write such beauty and to know that he could only hear it in his mind. To play it mechanically, without passion, would be dishonorable. I always give it everything I have, every nuance, every stress is vital. God bless his memory.
I play moonlight sonata with my guitar and everytime I do it, I feel like flouting in the clouds and I can't get rid of this beautiful feelings, it's WONDERFUL.
Any honest person who can also write and play music will tell you that a composition is heard in the mind and the heart ...it is hard to explain better , but you do not need to hear it in the normal auditory sense to know that is right. Mozart could hear the instruments he wrote for in his study.
Hearing yourself play an instrument that you write for is only a validation of what was created inside your soul.
I think I read that he wrote Moonlight Sonata before he had completely lost his hearing.
My uncle who was in a symphony orchestra once told me that it is better to play imperfectly with passion than perfectly without. He was a second violin and confessed to being unable to fit all the notes in as he put it but the conductor liked his passion and put him in the second chair ahead of those with perfect skill but played like a music box.

He didnt avoid crowds whenever he could. He loved performing. Its chopin who despised that. Now more accurately: Beethoven was very embarrassed that people might know he was deaf. He was regarded as one of the best... Who couldn't hear?!? So after he went deaf he then avoided all interactions with people because he was scared of them 1) finding out and 2) Having an embarrassing awkward meeting with someone. He didn't even like to leave the house. By all means he wished this were not the case.He was only completely deaf in the later period of his life. Before then he was very much out going.
He wanted to kill himself but he didnt because of his love for music. Whats totally incredible is that he composed the 9th Symphony when he was totally deaf. Imo the greatest Music piece of all time. However he isnt among my favorite musicians. I like Grieg, Bach and Chopin the most. I can also recommend Louis Gottschalk, a american componist. Chopin called him the King of pianists

Gary Oldman is one of THE most underrated actors of our generation , in my opinion he deserves an Oscar in almost every movie he's in , even as a support actor

I remember in an interview when the journalist said to Gary Oldman, how realistic & convincing he looked at playing it, to which Gary replied, I actually played it, I spent 6 months & countless hours learning it.

Yo igual, solo que desde pequeña escuché a Beethoven y gracias a él escuché a otros grandes compositores de la música clásica: Mozart, Bach, Shubert, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Verdi, Mendelssohn, Rossini, Brahms, etc.
Incluso, también toco el piano.

Just before my Mom died...she was a violinist, I asked her who her favorite composer was and she said it was a tough choice but she picked Beethoven.
Who can deny his masterpiece the Moonlight Sonata is utterly astoundingly brilliant.

Well you could say that but he's slowly losing his hearing, so putting his head over the wood makes it better for him to hear.
He wasn’t deaf yet. The wood amplified the sound. Like if you tap a table and then put your ear on the table and tap it is much louder. Also Beethoven had perfect pitch so he could hear the notes in his head even when he was deaf!

He wrote the Moonlight Sonata when he was 31 years old. His hearing was not perfect at that time, but he could still hear reasonably well. The movie takes certain liberties for dramatic effect.

Tom Hulce also played the piano pieces himself in Amadeus. The actual music heard in the film was pre-recorded and not his playing, but he had to learn it because Milos Forman wanted it to look 100% authentic and correct on screen.

It's actually a common myth that Beethoven was born deaf. Beethoven wasn't born deaf. He became partially deaf, but only became "completely" deaf in his last seven years of life. He was quite aware and made as many pieces in his last days to satisfy his musical needs. It's very, very sad to read his letters to his brother talking about his life and how he couldn't hear his own piano and how he wanted to kill himself. He truly did just want to play piano. RIP Beethoven.
Edit: I forgot to correct my typo "Beethoven was born deaf" never have I thought that let me make that clear. That was a typo. It would be dumb to think anyone deaf could just play an instrument off vibration. Yes it could be possible, but rarely possible if not impossible.

Beethoven died at age 57. You call that "very, very old?" From 1803-1812 as his hearing failed, he began to use the lower notes that he could hear more clearly. Works including the Moonlight Sonata, his only opera Fidelio and six symphonies were written during this period. The high notes returned to his compositions towards the end of his life which suggests he was hearing the works take shape in his head.

Beethoven the most extraordinary composer of all time. My parents took me to see Fantasia when I was 3 years old. The first time I heard Beethoven’s 6th symphony “Pastorale”. I asked my Dad what was the instrument playing the high notes. He replied “it is a piccolo “. I told him I wanted to learn how to play the piccolo. Fast forward to the 4th grade I learned how to play the flute & in the 8th grade I played the piccolo. I played for 15 1/2 years. Thank you Dad & Beethoven for fueling my passion of classical music. He's clearly playing what looks like a historically accurate fortepiano, but the music is definitely coming out of a modern Steinway type grand piano. The Moonlight sonata actually sounds quite a bit different on an original fortepiano. It's much more delicate.

As a composer myself, I briefly studied Beethoven, but not his music but his life, especially his medical condition, and it is my opinion that he his constant bowel-pain was either Crohns Disease or Ulcerative Colitis. As a sufferer myself I can hear the pain, the discomfort and resulting bitterness at his lot through his music... here especially! Though through that music, whilst difficult to do... it did bring light and with that comes sweet soothing... Hope. BRAVO that man what a legacy.. 🏆

One of the best pieces played today.. Beethoven did lose his hearing but was able to sustain his music by vibrations...I am hearing impaired since birth...I "hear" music with little sounds and vibrations in a room that plays the music.. Headphones work really well with base boost...
This is getting into the soul of Beethoven listening to the vibes of the piano great performance deep learning at its finest.
I like how in the beginning he plays with the music as if he's just messing around yet he does it so coherently like he is some sort of sorcerer playing his game in his own world making that messed up jumble of notes sound like something so elegant yet very familiar .He controls it.

I have loved Moonlight Sonata, ever since I was child and I would hear my mother play this song for me on the piano, before I go to sleep. It was a favorite and a meaningful gesture of love from her through music, where words are no longer needed. I would pretend I was walking among the moonlit path at night, yet feel nostalgic about the times I was younger and I would dance at moonlit nights. Those were happier, carefree times that I wish to return to, yet could not. All I can do now is listen and remember, then to be bitter and forget.
