How to get MORE snap - Disc Golf

  • This video is going to show you how to get more snap - disc golf, by using your UPPERBODY to use the momentum you've created with your legs, to make that disc SHOOT out of your hand, and flip over down the fairway. 😤🥏
    How to get more distance in disc golf is one of the most exciting things new and old players alike think about when they think about improving your game. But when most players think about how to throw farther in disc golf, they think it means tensing up and muscling the disc as hard as you can. This video will not only show you WHY that is costing you distance, but show you HOW you can fix that problem, and I even give you my swing thoughts that free me from muscling up, and allow me to get a SMOOTH, SNAPPY throw every single time.
    This video is part two of a series of instructional videos teaching you how to throw the disc harder and more consistently, IF YOU MISSED THE FIRST ONE, here is a link: • HOW TO GET SNAP - Disc... , that video covers the LOWER BODY, which is the foundation for a great throw, and for everything this video covers.
    Also, if you haven't seen my other videos, I'm Ben Bennett, and Ben's Big Drive is my journey to making my dream of becoming a professional disc golfer a reality, SUBSCRIBE so that you can follow along with me!!!
    The wonderful traditional Scottish Caber Tossing video is from Braemar Media, thanks to them for that footage!

    I found it very interesting that in both form videos the walk-up starts at the same time, the release is at different times, and then in both videos the follow-through ends at the same time. In the video of better form, the pull-through starts later but the follow-through still completes at the same time as the throw where the pull-through started sooner. That makes it really clear that your arm speed is higher in the second video.

    • @BensBigDrive
      @BensBigDrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really never saw it that way, that’s such a great observation, it just really drives home the point that arm speed is not about going faster, because if it were with better form and starting at the same time the better one would end earlier. Thanks so much for this, and I’ll be using it as an example when I explain this to people!!

    This was a great 1-2 combo of videos. I'm a bit late finding it. I think the trick is to discovery the feel of when the momentum of stopping with your right leg reaches your upper body and starts to force the rotation. Timing that up so that it is synchronized instead of early or late seems critical. I'm thinking that the extension of the arm out of the power pocket is going to be almost automatic if you get the timing right. I don't think I'm getting the benefit of my brace right now. I think the disc is ejecting too late and making it harder to rotate on my brace leg. I'm thinking if the disc comes out at "10 pm", then you're starting to slow down when you rotate vs me I'm just releasing the disc so I feel like I"m going to twist my knee out of the socket.
    This was some good content. You have a great way of explaining the mechanics - and you're funny! Nice work. Love your logo, too.

    • @BensBigDrive
      @BensBigDrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question and thanks for watching!! First thing is video yourself. You have to see the problem frame by frame before fixing it. Secondly, look at Paul mcbeth’s form, during his x-step, he actually extends his disc forward before going backwards and reaching back. This adds just that little bit of time before he reaches back to make sure he’s always timed correctly. I would try that out in the field, it might introduce some inconsistency but at least try it as a drill to get the thought in your head. Lastly, search “one step drill disc golf” on TH-cam and watch the loop ghost video about feet together/one step drills and follow his awesome advice. I hope this helps!

    I watched your video on the lower body (hips) opening before the shoulders, and then did some field work today. I actually had a glimpse (small breakthrough) of feeling more effortless or real power due to better timing. Towards the end of the fieldwork, watching my shadow on the ground, I noticed that I was so focused on the hip (and also letting my disc hang to limit arm tension) that I forgot about hitting with the elbow. . What do you know, now I find this video which speaks to the same concept. I have athletic hips from playing sports and ball golf, but man its really hard to coordinate that lower hip timing with your upper body. Its so strange to allow your upper body to lag - I had to literally slow down before each throw and do several "hip openings". I'm still not bracing enough against that right leg, but man - good videos and great visualizations!!! I've been playing 4-5 years now, and can throw 350, or 400 if I really get into it.... that next leap to truly throw 450+, takes so much work because for most normal sized people, you're doing that through truly proper timing and technique.
    Question - I was wondering if the timing or feeling that real snap is kinda like an ollie (or other unusual motion) in skateboarding. Seems so hard at first but once you feel it and get it, your body is just able to do it like second nature.

    • @BensBigDrive
      @BensBigDrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for watching and trying it out! The ollie analogy is great, the thing is it's a process of fixing one thing at a time until it becomes natural, and then fix the next thing, so on and so forth!

      @@robcrossett5417 Victor had a great suggestion, I would say that the more in control and behind your momentum your pull thru is, the easier it will be to rotate on your heel because you won’t be going as fast. Also making sure that you don’t life the toe before you release, will keep you from rotating early and that’ll make it much easier as well. Hope it helps, and thanks for watching!!

    • @michaelrichards2634
      @michaelrichards2634 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That rotation happens only in the follow through. If you are following through on the ball of your foot rather than the heel, you had your weight to far forward on the release and therefore, lost power.
      Focus on getting your weight distribution correct and forget about the follow through rotation. The follow through is a symptom, not the issue.

    I'm new to disc golf and have recently read that the disc is supposed to actually "rip" from your hand. Hold it tight, and the momentum of the pull thru and wrist snap should physically rip the disc from your grasp.
    Every instructional video says "release" the disc.
    Releasing implies that you are LETTING GO of something.
    So do you "release", as in let go, or does it actually rip from your firm grip?
    And if it's supposed to actually rip from your hand, would that not create a lot of extra friction thus slowing the disc?
    Everyone says grip it like you don't want someone to be able to pull it out of your hands. Well, I've got quite a powerful grip. Not even Eagles powerful arm speed and wrist snap would be able to rip a disc out of my grip unless I intentionally either let go, OR loosened my grip.
    Any clarification would be helpful.
    To add, I've only gone out throwing a few times. About 4 hours total. Also played 2 local courses with a friend who helped get me into the sport.
    I went from 100-150' and hyzering the bejeezers out of everything my first time out, to hitting 300', pretty consistently and fairly accurately, and ONCE just shy of 400' on a drive in this short time. All of my throws have been released, and not physically ripped from my grip by the momentum.
    Coming from a baseball pitching background at no point does a baseball throw ever RIP from your grip. That would certainly cause major accuracy issues, and also slow the ball down due to friction.
    There must be a clear cut answer in disc golf also, but no one really clarifies it. Everyone just says release...release at 10 O-Clock.
    I've been releasing and it's, so far, been working for me.
    Can you clarify?

    Hey Ben, I watched the first video about Snap and worked on planting the front foot today but it added Annie to my throw. Could that be a symptom of moving the top half of my body too fast?

    • @BensBigDrive
      @BensBigDrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching Tyler, without seeing you throw I would say it’s a combination of pulling thru too fast and you’re elbow coming too close to your body in the pull-thru, which will cause rounding an give it an anny release. The angle from the shoulder to the elbow should never be less than 90 degrees, there’s a great Danny Lindhal video about rounding you should watch. I hope that helps!

    hi there i did this with elbow along time and if i do that i ending up with elbow 180 degree and no shoulder turn so it become armstrong only, when do the shoulder turn in this thinking of leading with the elbow, its getting frustrated... now i work with the hips and start rotate them when i hit full extension, feels like more momentum.

    Your balance is still a little off. You begin looking back halfway through the x in your x step. Eyes should be on the target until your plant foot as crossed over your x-step foot before the plant. This creates proper balance which is necessary for proper timing of the hips engaging before the shoulders, and an effective weightshift. I guarantee once you start doing this you will feel more momentum and power being translated into the weightshift that will translate to the disc.

    Hey Ben, thank you for your last 2 Videos! I tried it on the field and already could increase my distance by 100ft or so :) The one thing I noticed in your drive though is your left arm not streched out like it should be for an optimal drive. Did you already noticed that and/or are you going to work on that?

      @BensBigDrive  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100ft?! That’s insane, I’m glad it’s helping! And great point about the left arm, I’ve known it for a while, but I’ve been waiting for the off-season to work on something like that just so that I’m not changing things up too drastically mid-season.
