Boeing 747-8 performs ultimate rejected takeoff

  • It's one of the most dramatic tests for a new airplane as the pilot slams on the brakes while going 200 miles per hour (320 km/hr). Watch as the 747-8 Freighter, loaded to maximum takeoff weight and equipped with 100% worn out brakes, perform a rejected takeoff without thrust reversers.

    It's incredible that one of the oldest jets out there is still getting updated as it's almost the face of Boeing! Still an impressive piece of tech!

    • @AEMoreira81
      @AEMoreira81 8 ปีที่แล้ว +96

      Most of the developments for the 747-8 came from the 787, which in turn shared development with the 777 (and future 777X), which is why even though it's not a good seller, it generally isn't much new technology except for a stretch.

    Well thought out, particularly the tire deflation. It's amazing how it took many aircraft accidents, across all brands and models, to reach this point. Industry is a funny thing: do the minimum, get sued for mistakes, and then produce a corrected product. It works the same in nature except that instead of litigation, there's extinction.

  • @BabyMakR

    Since Drum breaks are the most efficient way to stop heavy weights. The action of the drum on the shoe causes the shoe to press tighter onto the the drum. Its called self energizing. The reason its not used in cars is because cars use their breaks over and over in quick succession meaning that the drum can over hear reducing breaking efficiency. Airplanes don't use their breaks that much, so its not a problem.

    The a380 can still stop using thrust reversers and other stopping systems. Thus its certification. The 747, in the event of an engine failure (where reversers may not function) can preform an RTO as above.

      Louis Smith - Or rather the original concept for the 747 (and probably MD-12). Look for a national Geographic video "Megafactories - Boeing 747" or just search for this video: v=73mfHVDadug - The first 747 design in 1965 was a double decker. Once you find it, fast forward to 7:00 in (or watch the entire video if you want). A little after 8:00 they explain the first 747 design (double decker). It is fairly obvious that Airbus copied it, and obviously Mcdonnell Douglas was bought out by/merged into Boeing.

    braking power courtesy of Hitchiner Manufacturing in Milford,NH for Goodrich...these don't have shoes like in your car, they are torque bars made of inconel that wear into the drums somehow. all i remember is we cast a crapload of them for Goodrich, from what i understand they only last a few cycles. all jet powered aircraft have Hitchiner parts in them. i dont work there anymore, but they do amazing things with very hard to handle metals. inconel is some seriously strong metal!
