    Tatami mats grow like bamboo in Shogo's backyard so he needs to trim them with his katana every video to keep them in check.

    As my girlfriend is a traditional musician In Tokyo she has to wear a kimono a lot for performing and it never occurred to me how hard her kimono's are to put on or walk around.

    As someone who loves kimono I agree, they can be very hard to keep on properly and wear properly. I know just enough about them to be able to dress myself and others in more casual styles, but I know I am doing things in an improper "cheating" way at times. I have hand sewn some small snaps into a couple of my kimono to help keep the fabric in place properly while I wear them. I cant walk in the proper way due to an injury so I had to find a reasonable solution to keep everything nice. These kimono you showed today are wonderful and perfect for beginners!

    Very informative.
    I bought an old (1950-60s) kimono book from someone, in Japanese of course, and it has a lot of different traditional clothing including baby clothes.
    It helps me with sewing, as I am replacing the sewing on a huge stack of kimono and juban both antique(pre 1960) and vintage(pre 1980). I was so happy.
    I personally find learning and wearing kimono not that hard, but getting your dresser license is a whole different level.

    • @dakotatwilight
      @dakotatwilight 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was looking in the same book carefully page by page, and there is a two piece ladies kimono that looks quite like the one you both showed, so this must have been an established thing already before the 1960s to have been included in the book.

    I love wearing jinbei and samue! I tend to wear the top with a pair of leggings for errands / chores. They’re so comfy! Though, I’ve found that some of the jinbei have a scratchier weave for me - they can be a little itchy until softened with washing.
    The nibushiki lower half look like they’d be super cute as a wrap skirt by themselves too.

    Everyone seem to be having so much fun. It's a joy to watch, and very informative. I didn't know there were this many different kinds of traditional Japanese clothing, and certainly not that it could be that easy to wear... then again, I tried putting on my sister's karate gi on once and couldn't figure out how to tie it...

    Thank you for sharing the shops!
    Regarding your statement about dressing oneself in Kimono, I find myself in disagreement though.
    Yes, the exam takes five years, but in the exam you also learn ho to dress others and not only yourself and you learn how to wear formal and informal Kimono.
    One can learn how to dress oneself without having to take the exam and it would not take five years. Yes, you would need to practice and the more you practice, the faster you learn how to wear Kimono comfortably and correctly.
    I am learning how to improve my skills on dressing myself with a professional for about a year now and I need less than 15 minutes to dress myself with Juban, Kimono and Obi. My Kitsuke is not falling apart, I can easily move around and my obi is not hurting, although I have to admit, that my backs muscles are a little weak so my back hursts a little, but this is not only happening hen wearing Kimono.
    Anyay, I loved to finally see how a two-piece Kimono is put on and loved the camelia design on it.
    So thank you for this video!

    To "western" eyes, all of them except the last and most colorful one looked like a Gi/dobak (karate uniforms). I like the Hakama (both legged & non-legged) for the bottom part, probably because of the mini series "Shogun", When it first aired I was in my teens and it made a big impact in my life

At first I felt uncomfortable being in kimono as a man, but it seems many people like it and often ask questions. I live in Tokyo and even Japan ask about it all the time.

    I'm sorry, but are there any other kimono-like things but that are good for people who are bad with tying things? I'm a little broken and I recently avoid even lancing shoes as it takes me too much time and it's problematic even without cat's interruption. I think trying to tie those two strings in Jinbei would be a little hard for me and surely would catch cat's attention. Are there any things that can be tied with right hand only or tying can be avoided? Are there any hospital-friendly clothes that are easy to wash too? I'm sorry, I'm just really broken and I got a little jealous looking at you, tying all those things so fast and cutely and I just thought that I may not be able to do it like you did. You are really great! Every time you would feel down, just think that there is someone who admires even simple things in you, like how you can tie things!

      The one that was denim was a lighter, work-wear like a monk would wear. I imagine they didn't have an issue with denim in it as....they made it in denim. Don't like it take it up with the people that made it. I simply stated that as a fabric for work wear, denim is a durable choice. I wear jeans every day working on truck unloads. I manage just fine in all Temps and what was worn in the vid was much lighter. Guess its a good thing you didn't make anything I work in or it would have been torn up in a week I guess.

    So cool! Makes a lot more sense for people that worked out in the fields or did a lot of house work. Ain’t no one back in ye olden days have time to wear a fussy kimono to do chores. 😂
    Question- maybe your lovely ladies can do a video on kimono and pregnancy? With clothing like corsets, there were special ones that would change along with the woman’s body. I wonder how did women go about dealing kimono and obi while pregnant?

    • @SpringStarFangirl
      @SpringStarFangirl 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not all that familiar with kimono, but from what I've learned, that's what the ohashori is for. It's meant to adjust the length of the kimono as your body develops through pregnancy, unlike men's kimono that remain the same length.

    As I'll be returning to Japan during Summer again this year, I'm curious to know if there are any tourist situations where Jinbei would be inappropriate.
    With any luck, they can be worn in pretty much any non-business scenario, because when we were there last year, it was brutally hot.
    I'm particularly concerned about eating out in the evening, for example at a particular Yakuniku restaurant we fell in love with in Kamigyo.

    I enjoy this alot I didn't know there was a 2 peice kimono. Do you have a video on obi? I have the instant easy obi. How do Japanese feel about it compair to a traditional obi. And what all require to wear the easy one vs a traditional one?

    • @84rinne_moo
      @84rinne_moo 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Regarding the easy obi, either if it’s for yukata or kimono, you need all the same things usually as you would need for traditional obi (as the “easy” part is that it’s tied into the final decorative fashion already). For example, for kimono you’d still need to add on the obi-makura, the obi-age, and the obi-jime even with easy obi.

    Love your videos! What is the difference between a Samue and a Gi? (Other than the pockets, the Samue looks just like the Gi I wore years ago.)

    You have a beautiful family. I think that I might be too large for these clothes at 2 meters tall and heavily built. A pity as the mens clothes really appealed.

    Idk if wearing kimono is so much hard as it is that western style living does not have good synergy with kimono.

    I tried to buy but it said I needed an address in Japan. I’ll try again when I have more time to figure it out. Thanks for the video!!

    Would like to ask?
    What are the furry looking collars worn with the kimono around New Years?
    What is their significance?

    Okay, so I just stumbled across a video that said you lived in Michigan, USA for 4 or 6 years (I forget which one), is this still true? Because if so it'd be an honor to somehow one day meet you.

    Nice clothes you got there! Fun to see you trying out the clothes (with a little fashion show-off on the side), even the baby had something. Samue does give the utility clothes vibes for me but I guess it is comfortable and fun to wear. What kind of shoes are you supposed have with them?
    Also, now that it has been mentioned, have you ever met or talked to a Buddhist monk?
