As a very pale redhead, I was extremely honoured and blessed when I visited an Indian family who lived down the road from me. They asked me if I would like to wear a sari and drink tea with them. I was roughly 15 or 16 years old. This was about 20 years ago. The tea was what us westerners call "chai" and it blew my mind. I appreciate the openness of even the most well versed kimono experts wanting others to try it, obviously with the idea that you do so with respect, which I don't think would be an issue.
I know for me, personally, I love how hakama feel when I wear them so I wonder how people would generally feel about such clothing. I know that in many cases its a special thing now adays and long ago it was a status of the samurai to wear umanori hakama. However, I am curious to know what most think on this topic as well. I agree about the respect, because respect is such a huge part of Japanese culture to begin with. I would feel so honoured to be taught how to wear kimono and be seen in them. They look comfortable and the wearer appears beautifully dressed no matter the pattern. I can’t begin to describe the feeling seeing such lovely kimono brings to me. Apart from the Japanese attitude of care for respected objects, I would like to suggest two other contributing factors that might help a kimono last 100 years (while jeans seldom do).
    1. Some kimonos are worn rarely, only on special occasions. Everyday clothing wears out much faster.
    2. The kimono is basically a loose-sleeved robe, so it doesn't suffer the friction and shear strain that close-fitting western clothing must endure.

  • @NieroshaiTheSable
    @NieroshaiTheSable 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

What usually gets left out of conversations about topics like "cultural appropriation" is that there are what are called "open cultures" and "closed cultures." Kimonos seem to fall well within "open culture." A "closed culture" would be one that feels its internal identity is at risk if bigger outside cultures swoop in and commercialize their image, usually divorced from the original cultural context.

I've always wanted to wear a kimono for at least a few hours or more, just to see what it's like. I've always thought they were so beautiful. There's so much artistry that goes into every one that it's hard not to appreciate all the work that went into creating the fabric and then dressing someone in it! I'm always so impressed by the color and pattern combos, and there have been very few that I have seen where it didn't really work. I'm so glad here's yet another video with a Japanese person, particularly a lady that is all about teaching others how to dress in kimono, saying she'd love to see foreigners wearing kimono! The whole cultural appropriation thing is so disheartening that at one point I did feel a little guilty about my longing to wear one, but I got over it. I don't want to pretend to be Japanese, I just want to wear pretty clothes, and these pretty clothes look AWESOME.

Shame on them for not providing you a kimono in the right size! I'm sure sumo wrestlers are bigger than you. If they can wear kimono/yukata (and they HAVE to wear them when out in public), so can you; you just need to find them in correct size or get them tailor made. It's not uncommon to get kimono/yukata tailor made either, and it makes them a ton easier to put on. Many people find kimono/yukata difficult to put on because they are incorrectly sized, so they have to make adjustments when wearing, and such adjustments takes skills.

So I can point to this video the next time political fanatics start talking about "cultural appropriation".
As most normal people think, if foreigners appreciate traditional clothes and items of your own culture, you tend to see it as a compliment and something to be happy about.
But bad people who wish to sow division and create conflict between people, will go around and tell you that you "can't" wear a traditional garb of another people's culture.

It is interesting to hear that there appears to be a standard way of folding a kimono to store it. I have done quilting and one of the things I was thought early on to preserve my quilts was to NOT fold it the same way each time as it can cause stress at the folds and wear those spots faster. It stretches out the fabric on the fold and can also misshape the quilt so that it bulges where the creases were. . Instead each time I fold one to put it away I need to change how many folds or order of folding to put it up.

I remember asking the wife of someone I worked with, who wore kimono daily, if she could teach me how. At first she thought I was asking to wear one of hers, but once she understood I had recently bought one at a vintage sale and wanted to learn to properly care for it, she became my Japanese-sister. We bonded over her taking me places, showing me what items I need to assist in proper wearing and introducing me to her kimono teacher! She even wore a traditional yukata, even after 30+ i still look fondly of it and always wanted to learn more. In final fantasy 11 and 14 ( 2 mmorpg) i learned of various festivals and holiday, such as golden week, and sakura viewing and a few others.
I'm a firm believer is sharing culture, and experiencing it first hand as we can learn more about people and their traditions. My hope is to one day visit japan when it is feasible and experience the various culture aspects, such as attending a traditional tea ceremony as i'm a big fan of matcha tea.
I'm of irish and french canadian heritage.. and a lot of the celtic heritage and old beliefs were taken in to the christian church such as all saints day and samhain which got combined into all hallows eve or halloween. To add a lot of culture can be traced back to a mixing of various peoples coming together, and bringing their traditions together.

No men don’t pull the collar down in back and the back of men’s sleeves is closed whereas on a woman it’s open

Thank you so much for saying what you did. Kimono are beautiful, and I want to wear them because they are such and the stories behind them are so rich. I am in the middle of sowing up an old tomesode I found in an antique store, I've worn it with an obi, not with the formal nijudaiko, because I don't have the tools yet (next pay check will remedy that, but was told by a neighbor I was trying to "appropriate" a culture that wasn't mine. Such has never been my intention. It scared me from wearing it. I want to learn more about how to wear it and have been browsing Sunao Sensei's channel to do just that. Kimonos are beautiful, have a rich history, and deserve to be worn and seen. Thank you Shogo san for encouraging such, and thank you Sunao Sensei for teaching such.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful information and the beautiful kimonos. I love learning more about this beautiful garment and the Japanese culture! And thank you also for being so generous with sharing it with all of us, it’s refreshing to hear your viewpoint and knowing that we can be a part of your beautiful culture as well! It’s amazing to see the care that goes into the way it is worn and styled, and it adds to the respect I have already had knowing how much work goes into the making of them as well. They are treasures to be enjoyed for as long as we have them!

Shogo-san, one of the things I love the most about your channel is how you always name those who are with you behind the scenes and let them say their greetings. This respect and consideration you have towards others always makes me smile and want to be a kinder person too, and I thank you for that. :)

One of the best ways to wear down fabric is to wash it, especially machine washing. Because the kimono is worn with underlayers, it's not absorbing the sweat and oils from the body, and doesn't need to be washed frequently. This is the same with many kinds of clothing that are intended to be worn as an outer layer only, with something soft and absorbent (and easy to wash!) underneath. It lasts so much longer if it's not being subjected to that kind of regular abuse!

I think Japanese culture is so beautiful & I wish to really experience some of it when I’m older.

Hopefully they will have the rental again, and may be I'll try the actual kimono this time

I am 59 years old, fell in love with Japan in recent years, and went to the “Orlando Japan Festival” in Kissimmee, Florida (USA) with my daughter and grandchildren last November (2022). I wore men’s Kimono from head to toe, and while my grandchildren thought it was “really cool”, I was also approached by two old women (at different times) who not only complimented me on how I wore traditional Kimono, but marveled at the fact that I tied my own Kaku Obi. I have since bought more Kimono, and my 10-year-old granddaughter asked If I was going to get hit-on by more “old ladies”. I’m now teaching my students about Japanese culture and we are currently talking about Japanese footwear from Warashi to Geta, Zori and Setta. Although my wife doesn’t share my passion for Japan, she was very amused by my Obaasan encounters. 😁

I would be very happy if my "National cloth" would be so popular as kimono etc.
I from Poland and it is Żupan and Kontusz (for mens), and it also have belt called "pas kontuszowy"(kontusz belt), IT is about 30 cm, and 4 metres long, there is many ways to tie it.
But in my country IT is not so popular. I want to change that, do IT will be more popular in country and abroad.

I bought myself a kimono in Kyoto when I visited Japan for my honeymoon in february 2024 and I recently wore it to visit the Japanese garden in Hasselt, Belgium.
I think I did wear it correctly, however I had forgotten to remove the thin white thread on the edges of the kimono (first time I wore it after buying it). Small mistake 😅
The staff at the garden really loved that I was wearing a kimono though.

Its funny to think about because its usually people who arent of that culture who are offended (aka white college students). If people of that culture didnt want you wearing things like this they wouldnt sell it to you.
Just make sure you show respect.
