I love how the traditional summer outfit says "I don't care".
The first yukata really struck me as an example of how nothing is ever really new. I bet most people think that the idea of a celebrity walking around with a T-shirt that says "I don't care" or "IDGAF" is so hip and new. But 250 years ago Ichikawa Danjuro was doing exactly that. He was a meme before memes were a thing!
For real, I loved learning about that. It's always nice to have a reminder that humans in history were just as human as we are today, since I think I tend to imagine historical humans as in some ways more somber and wise or thoughtful. ~200,000 years of puttin around, making jokes, doing our best, being imperfect, and also doing some cool things - so it will continue in the future.
Seriously. There's a wall in Italy from the Roman Empire's time, Pompeii, where commoners would graffiti the wall and put exactly the kind of nonsense jokes we see on the internet. The fact that people were making these kinds of jokes on the wall is more hilarious than the fact that it survived 2000 years. Humans are exactly the same as thousands of years ago.
Yayyy finally a men's kimono video. There aren't many videos about men's kimono even though I'm quite interested in it (especially Hakama, Haori, and Haori Himo because I think they look really impressive) so thank you for fulfilling our wish! 🙇♂️ The Juban with the lions are so cool! @@amethyst5538 from what I understand it was not allowed for many people to have fancy clothes. But many of the merchants were quite rich and want to have them. So the solution was to put the fancy parts on the inside. The same thing happened with merchant houses having hidden rooms and stories because they simply weren’t allowed to have nicer things than the upper class. At least that’s the way it’s been explained to me by people that currently live in those old merchant houses. It doesn’t seem like they were doing it because they feared robbery or anything. It was simply a way to break the rules.

I know it probably seems like a small thing to you. But hearing you, your wife and others pronounce Japanese words in your normal cadence is really nice. The dropped sounds, blended sounds, emphasized sounds. It feels more natural than the "stage voice" that most media have. It's always pleasant when I get to spend ~25 minutes listening to friends talk about their culture in a way that doesn't feel like classroom instruction.
One of the reasons why I love your channel is you get to produce content that I'd never thought of looking into before, like men's kimono!

It always reminds me of old polish tradition of Long tied sashes. Usually colorfull and Wide, witch four diferent colours, so you can have one distinct show, if ocasion is due. The way they are tied reminds me of Obi so much.
Kimono look so sharp on both men and women. I wish we could see it more often in day to day life. In North America it really feels like the most easy/cheap/comfortable option is best but there's no denying that dressing well is so much better!
I am really impressed with the winter kimono. The gold coat really enhances the brown color of the under kimono. I also like the spring kimono with the blue circles and semicircles.

I’ve always wondered what the etiquette was in public or indoors with kimono?
Do you take some parts off like an overcoat ? Or do you keep them on the whole time? (I’m thinking more about the winter one)

Are you referring to the kimono itself? If so, no. You keep it on since it's the equivalent of your regular clothing (like shirt and trousers). The juban (under the kimono is like an undershirt/undergarments), so you wouldn't wear them without the kimono on top.
If you're referring to the haori (kimono coat), then I would be curious to find out as well. I usually keep my haori on if I'm wearing it out and about (to the shop, dinner, etc.), but will take it off if I'm at home or a friend's house. I consider it a part of the outfit as a whole, much like a blazer or cardigan, so I like to keep my outfit together. Don't know if that's the custom, but that's what I do.
If you wear the haori in a casual setting, I think you can take it off if you're too hot. Kimono are warm enough with all the layers, better take the haori off than getting a red head. If it's something like a mens wedding hakama and haori outfit I don't think it gets taken off, except for the partying part at night off course. But a wedding is the opposite of casual.. soo.
@@angelwings06 That is the question. A blazer is part of your outfit and thus wouldn't be removed when going indoors. However an overcoat which is basically just another blazer but it extends to the ankles and is made of heavy wool would be removed when inside because you would simply over-heat too fast.
I would say same logic applies, we just don't know if the haori is considered a blazer or overcoat.
I've also worn a men's Kimono at Blok M Plaza, South Jakarta, because there was a Japanese samurai exhibition at the mall
As someone who cosplays male characters from anime a lot and want to try and do some cosplays in traditional Japanese fashion videos like these help me for the future. I may be cosplaying a fictional character but I want to be as respectful as I can to this beautiful culture and the history behind everything is so amazing to me. I am currently looking into finding a local business that sells kimonos and also learn more but as I am in America it's really tough to find (and it's interesting with the white saviors wanting to call anyone appreciating the culture as people who cultural appropriation smh). If I ever do get a chance to wear one I will be as respectful as possible.

I think I liked the winter kimono best too: the different layers, textures, and accessories make it visually very interesting, but most of all I liked Shogo's reaction over being dressed up, and experiencing how these different looks feel. It was so genuine, and very endearing to watch.

I really like the extra information like the names of the items, historic knowledge of the marks on the kimono like the summer yukata's coloration and marks going back to that of the famous kabuki artist. Fantastic video! Hopefully one day I’ll be able to try on a kimono, but that might be far in the future for me. If you see this comment Shogo, I was wondering if you could cover Japan’s problematic history with Hokkaido. I saw that Abroad in Japan recently went there but I don’t believe there was any mention of the displacement of the Ainu people in that video, and since you don’t shy away from more difficult topics in your videos I believe you can make a mature video about the problems with Japan’s history with the island and the Ainu people. Not many people in the West know about the Ainu and it resonates with America’s own issues of displacement and cultural genocide. Thank you for the videos Shogo!
In a previous video SHOGO said he would like to make an on location video(s) about HOKKAIDO and the AINU people. Not going to happen this cold, snowy winter but perhaps later this year. Stay tuned....

This is such a great video - thanks for showing us the different kinds of men's kimono, different styling suggestions, and just for such a fun video in general! Even though you said you aren't super in-tune with fashion, it was fun watching you have fun with different styles and colors and all that with these kimono that Harumi and you worked hard to prepare! I think she did a great job with all of them! I think the winter kimono was my favorite, in part because of the extra expression you get to have with the haori and haori himo, and I think the colors looked great on you! She chose lots of cool, stylish, and flattering colors and patterns and combinations of items!

In Kyoto there is a boutique kimono company that makes daily wear clothing for the modern samurai. They're not half bad they cost about $700 US on the low end .
