I bought a 2019 Pilot Elite in early August after looking at every vehicle in this segment. No regrets 3 months and 3,000 miles later. It's an awesome vehicle full of good tech and comfort.
@@1188clean I haven't noticed any gear hunting problem with the 2019 ZF transmission. I know Honda re-tuned it for 2019. I have no experience with driving older Pilots of the same generation but I'm aware of the original complaint. My 2 biggest complaints about the car are no 360 overhead cam and the cup holders don't fit my 1L Camelbak water bottles. :)
Autos Fan Honda has one of the worst V6/automatic transmission combinations for most of this decade. With Motor Trend having to replace their Pilot tranny the trend contines.
Very good review. I agree with other commenters, the presenter here is great. Natural sounding, clear and easy to understand and thorough in detailing the car’s pros/cons. Great work! Im a single dad and I got the pilot mainly because of travel and it would fit my kid well. I originally had the 2016 and loved it, just up graded to the 2019. The only draw back, which is a very small, is the steering wheel lay out, or controls and the lay out of the dash screen. A little busy and some pointless buttons. They could have done better on that. But again, its small. The ride and everything she is saying, very true
@@nuarichard I think it is, but there is a couple of things I personally would like to see changed. The speed reading could be made to be the line reading and the icons like the fuel icon and such, I personally think they could loose those. I mean, if it says fuel (fuel economy) do I really need the same icon? For me, make the speed reading a line reading like whats above it, bring down the D, N, P letters where the icons are. It would seem less busy. But over all I really do love it and I will probably up grade this one to the next generation when they come
The windows do not clean the dew off like the older models. You need to keep a hose nearby or carry water out every morning in case your windows are not clear. My 2013 pilot lx cleans them off, but not the new models including the touring model. It has been a long time since I had a car without this feature.
Great review! Thank you for the thorough review on this Pilot! My only concern is the spilled yogurt..twice mentioned of this makes me wary of yogurt-wielding passengers to be allowed in this SUV. 😂
I think I could understand these vehicles a little better if they were further removed from Mini-vans. They tend to cost a little bit more than equally spec'd mini-vans while being smaller and less practical (although offering AWD). I'm seeing so much on the Pilot that in one shape or another is also on the Odyssey. The only compelling thing to me is AWD since most users (myself included) don't keep a spare set of rims and winter wheels for family haulers. The only real family cars that give any sort of nod to driving enjoyment is Mazda they also have better cabin quality especially in top trims. I'll be curious to see how the Telluride and Palisade will compare next year. I have been impressed with Hyundai and Kia recently.
SS S: Wanna know the difference between a Pilot and an Odyssey? Just ask my wife. It's the driver's seat height. I think she's an example of a huge market segment for crossovers, women who want the functionality of a minivan with the higher "command" seating position of an SUV.
@@kenromito Tried to find such a video without success in a quick search. If that's a significant problem I'd expect it to show up in IIHS or NHS tests. Neither downgrades the Pilot for side impacts. If you can cite the video, it would be interesting to see it.

Have to say, though, that the real risk of wheels coming off the pavement in a side collision lies in its rollover potential. And on that score, the Pilot actually ranks better than several minivans including the Odyssey and the Toyota Sienna. It even outranks the VW Golf Wagon, a station wagon with a much lower center of gravity. (Check out the ratings for various vehicles on the site you included.) Actually, rollover issues have plagued SUV's since the 1990's when the early models were body on frame designs with high centers of gravity and several were truly dangerous, not just in crashes but in day to day driving. All in all, designers have done a lot since the 1990's to reduce the risk of vehicle rollovers. Consumer Reports originally publicized those risks and they've done a number of interesting articles about the problem over the years. As it turns out rollover potential is a complicated issue that depends on much more than simply a higher center of gravity. Surprisingly, for example, tires with more grip may contribute to a rollover from a side crash because the vehicle is less likely to "slide" on impact. As a Honda Odyssey Man Van driver, I am tired of the Honda perfect practicality and am ready for something at least a little exciting. I can not stomach another Honda... I have owned many, all perfectly perfect and perfectly boring. The new Odyssey is amazing, this new pilot looks amazing. She says "it may not be a fun car to drive" .... I'll pass.
Could not agree with you more. I love the value and practicality of the Pilot, but it is EASILY the worst looking 3 row SUV out there. Yes, I want something that's roomy, and comfy, and safe, etc, etc, etc. But I'm going to spend $40-$50K on a vehicle, I also want to enjoy driving it. I just can't get excited about anything Honda puts out there.
Like any other leatherette in most of cars today. Do you think Mercedes doesn't have leatherette?! Even E class has leatherette, except seating area, only. This means side supports, head rest, etc... are leatherette.
Exactly what we did and saved $10k. We also didn't want the second row captain chairs either as we needed room for 8 people occasionally and we have shoved 8 people in it including two car seats, shopping bags and one baby stroller! So damn practical. Oh by the way, dealer tells me the zf 9 speed requires 12qt of oil at $50 per qt plus labor for a total flush. The 6 speed is much cheaper to maintain!!!!!!
Just because you work for Edmunds doesn't mean you're smart. I like the car much better than I like you. This Honda Pilot Elite will do 0-60 in 6.3 seconds, that's' quick enough for most.
Who wants to sit in the middle of the 3rd row seat? I'll consider the minivan if I want a people carrier, and only 5 passengers for anSUV....3 row SUV? No thanks.

I bought a 2019 EXL 6 speed so far very good SUV, good gas miles, comfortable and I like the 6 speed over the 9 speed transmission.
