OOPS! There's no CVT option for this car. My bad. The base transmission is a 6spd auto.

Any improvement over the 9 speed trans that had so many issues an complaints over the past few years? I've been considering this or the Highlander as a family car.

That eye distraction comparison was an informative test to show. It makes you see that a properly designed and functional layout is needed. It's not just cell phones that distract people while driving.

I probably should have made us turn the volume to a specific number to make the test more fair but ya. Next time!

I kind of want my parents to get either a Pilot, Passport or a Ridgeline for their next car, but that radio might be a dealbreaker.

The “distraction test” with the volume knob versus the touch screen was a great addition to this review. If i could suggest, please add this more into other reviews. Hopefully car manufacturers see these issues and dress them cause the distraction driving charge in Ontario is insane!

Pausing the review at 3 minutes to add some praise for the "distracted eyes" demo. In my opinion that was an incredibly inspired idea and you worked it into the video super clearly and professionally. "Usability" is a tricky thing to nail down and that was a great demonstration in only a couple seconds of video time.
Been following the channel for a few months and this finally motivated me to say something :) Overall I think these little video tricks are one of your great tools and you do a great job picking up on the "little things" that a prospective buyer probably won't pick up on during a test drive. Keep up the great work!

My mom has a 2016 pilot LX 2WD. The most basic model, and I think its the best option. It has the basic audio system with bluetooth and usb integration, tri-zone zone climate control (dual front, single rear), cloth seats, same 3.5l engine and the probably more reliable 6 speed auto. Thats all we need in a car like this. It is still very comfortable and reliable as a typical Honda. In my personal opinion thats the Pilot to get. No need to get frustrated by the bad infotainment system of the more expensive models or the transmission issues on the 9 speed that have happened in some models.

I have the 2019 Pilot and I think an important thing to highlight is that is has Lane Keep Assist - NOT just Lane Departure Mitigation like many manufacturers. There’s a big difference. LKAS keeps you in the center of the lane and will automatically take gentle curves, while LDM ping-pongs you from side to side if you take your hands off the wheel. LDM is a safety feature, LKAS is semi-autonomous tech. And it works very well!

The answer to the radio discussion problem is preset. Preset had always been the solution. You should not be screwing with the settings in the car while cruising at any speed. The cars warming up, you adjust your memory seat, your climate control, your mirrors, and your entertainment. It's got many presets; do it once and you're set for life. Then you can talk to your toy, it's set. You live to love your tech, use it.

Went 3 row SUV shopping a month ago. Tried the 2019 Highlander fully loaded, the Palisade and the Atlas. Wife and I then went to Honda just to be thorough. The dealership had a 2020 Black Edition Pilot (yes, it’s been available in the US). Tried it, got a good discount, boom! The Pilot was not even on our initial list. But with 2 small kids, it made sense. Not as fancy as the Palisade, but much better than the Highlander and the Atlas. Plus it doesn’t look too bad all blacked out (still a SUV looking like a minivan somehow, make no mistake).

I own a 2017 Pilot Touring AWD and I’m absolutely happy with that. I chose Touring over Elite because the latter one didn’t have LaneWatch. It’s sad to see the feature has been completely phased out by Honda. They could at least leave it as a safety option.

Before buying my 2019 Pilot 6spd , test drove the Highlander and the Explorer
I didn’t like the gear hunting transmission from the Highlander, the explorer was good but is not reliable as a keeper
I sold my 2014 accord v6 with over 100k miles and no issues other than battery, tires and filters
I’m happy with the Pilot on every way, reliability, comfort, performance and price

We own a CRV and I never have issues changing stations, because I use the steering wheel controls to do that. No need to take your eyes off the road. And if you set the display behind the steering wheel to “Now Playing,” you can see your stations right in front of you.

I've always liked the Pilot. Really nice vehicle. But I recently test drove the Palisade. It makes this Honda feel like a poor cousin. The Hyundai was better in every aspect. I hope the Pilot is cheaper than the Palisade in Canada, or it could be in trouble.

VTEC and i-VTEC. I mean, in a way, I guess you can say it has VTEC.
VTEC - Variable Timing (and lift) Electronically Controlled (VTEC), is a system that uses two different camshaft profiles. One camshaft profile for low RPM, providing good torque and excellent drivability, and a camshaft profile for high rpm that has greater lift and longer duration. This system is usually set to a specific RPM (5,500) and greatly increases horsepower.
i-VTEC - Intelligent Variable Timing (and lift) Electronically Controlled (iVTEC), is a system that combines VTEC and VTC into one unit. As you can imagine, combined the best of both world results in an incredibly efficient and powerful engine. The VTEC part of the system has two different camshaft profiles, one for low rpms, and one for high rpm. The VTEC part of the system allows valve overlap to be adjusted at any moment, resulting in much greater efficiency and slightly better performance.
      dustrunnersauto.com/vtec-vs-ivtec/
In other words, i-VTEC is a combo of VTEC and VTC. VTEC itself sort of died in the early 2000's. I had a 2007 Honda Accord which had a 2.4L i-VTEC DOHC. It was a really great car. It had the power, but had pretty good gas mileage.
