With so many crossovers to choose from nowadays, buyers looking for a 3-row family vehicle have an even tougher decision to make. Thankfully for Honda, the latest Pilot benefits from the same updates we like from the latest Accord and Odyssey. Throw in a silky smooth and rev happy 280 HP V6, plenty of interior room for up to 8 people, and standard safety features like Honda Sensing for all trims and what you have is one of the most practical family SUV's in the segment. While some competitors do offer better handling and even more tech at a slightly lower price, its hard to beat the strong combination of reliability, quality, and practicality that Honda continues to offer for 2019.

The look and off road capability of the Jeep Grand Cherokee win in my opinion hands down. But when you factor in cost to own , refinement, repair headaches, and resale value as well as overall reliability and dependability, there us no question in my mind my money would go to the pilot period. Not even close. I dont trust anything really that comes from FCA long term. Plus the pilot has way better fuel economy and crash test ratings in all categories. Good luck with your purchase.

Honda Pilot, Telluride, etc: Basically, took a Nissan Quest interior from 2001, added tech/safety from last 4 years, slapped with a 2019 price tag and gave it the same SUV exterior body language that 90% of vehicles in this segment copy from one another. No knock on Sofyan, admire your work. This is a knock on the auto-industry, in general. Too many major car companies are just competing over sales than originality.

Do people no longer watch movies as a family? Also, don't kids like to play video games (e.g. ps4, xbox, nintendo)? You can do that on the rear entertainment system. Having the rear entertainment system connected to the 10 speaker system on the Touring/Elite is an underrated experience. You can also hook up your phone via hdmi (or via wifi for android users) and play/stream whatever is on your phone. Trust me a rear entertainment is more useful to families than a panoramic sunroof/moonroof.

The Pilot also comes with 2 wireless headphones (and 2 wired headphone jacks) that connects to the rear entertainment system so that rear passengers can enjoy the rear entertainment system while the drive listens to whatever they like. The rear entertainment system comes in handy for longer road trips. Don't see how it's a bad thing to have a entertainment system in a car when almost every family has them in their living room. The Pilot comes with an electrical outlet right underneath the rear entertainment system and has wifi hotspot ability so theres so many things you can do with it (apple tv, roku, online gaming, etc.). Yes, everyone can break out their iPhones/ipads and do their own thing, but wouldn't it be nice to have some shared family experiences so ya'll can talk to each other.

I really get triggered with these car manufacturers cheaping out on lighting. I don’t get it, the Honda CRV has LED turn signals but the Pilot doesn’t. How does that even make sense???

    • @drw1926
      @drw1926 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It makes zero sense. Honda cheaps out in a lot of ways and it pisses me off. We have a 2019 Odyssey EX-L and all four of the windows are one-touch open/close, yet the Pilot Elite only the front windows are one touch? What does that save Honda, a few lines of software code? The Accord used to have a plastic grab handle inside the trunk so you didn't have to push down on the dirty exterior. They removed it several years ago, but you can still buy it as an accessory for around $4. No glove box lights anymore either, another $2-$3 Honda pockets at our expense. I understand Honda isn't the only manufacturer doing this but it's still annoying to no end.

I really like the entire Pilot except for one BIG thing.. The Dashboard/instrument cluster is probably the worse I have ever seen. It is unattractive and Honda decided to change everything. (Honda thinks they are improving everything but they are making things worse and harder to use.) Why couldn't Honda just go with a basic traditional dashboard/instrument cluster with large knobs, dials for tacho/speedo , etc.?? Dashboards in the Toyota Highlander and Mazda CX-9 are far better and easier to use that the dashboard in the Pilot.. Oh, and get rid of push button shifter.. Man.. I like shifting a standard traditional shifter..

Let's be honest...half of the people bashing the pilot drive a POS car or own an old Pilot and want to make themselves feel better about driving something outdated. This is a family SUV people. For that purpose, the pilot looks pretty damn good. Better looking than the Explorer or Atlas? Nah. However, no other "family SUV" in this class has better interior cabin space, tech, and comfort (most important features of a family vehicle)? The Pilot is the perfect family SUV. It's not trying to be a BMV or Mercedes. Still, it is better looking than most other SUVs in this class. Period.

The Subie indeed was a nice vehicle. What sold me and would stay me towards the Honda is their proven engine and reliability. (Minus the tranny issue. I never heard of before)
Also the seats lay perfectly flat which is an important factor for me as I would go light overlanding/camping in it. Headroom also won over sitting up in it when I imagined having air mattress in there.
Mind you I'm a Lexus/Toyota fan and have been all my life but very few of the Toyota vehicles compare to the versatility of this Pilot unless you go astronomically higher in price such as the Land Cruiser/ LX570 at double the price. Even then one has to sleep diagonal in those.
Ingress and egress out of the Pilot was easier than the Highlander too. Overall Toyota is just couple steps behind Honda Pilot.

I recently bought a 2019. Overall, I think it is a good car. I like the ride, handling and it is my second Pilot. Three disappointments I’d like to point out. First, with the newer engine design Honda stayed with a timing belt/interference engine. For those of you who lease this means nothing. For those who purchase it means shelling out about $1200 dollars to have the timing belt and water pump replaced every 100k miles. Secondly, not so much in this video but in others on utube - there are buttons on each side of the second row seats. Push one of these buttons and the seat flies forward to enable easy access to the third row. On mine the seat only moves forward a few inches. A Honda tech at my dealer said there was nothing he could do about it. This was confirmed by the service manager who stated “I understand this is a real disappointment, but they are coming out of the factory this way”. Yea, it’s a disappointment. Honda can put every high tech feature available on a car but can’t make a seat move forward like it was designed? Go figure. Thirdly, I purchased the EX-L model. Don’t know about the others but Honda put 4 low end tires on this model - Bridgestone Dueler H/P Sport that are rated by the mfg for only 40k. This means you can plan on replacing them around 25k. I have had them before and I know they don’t last. So, there goes the best part of another $1000 down the drain. Hey, these things may not mean much to affluent west coast buyers. But, it might to a lot of buyers in the rest of the US. In truth, Honda is no different now than many other car manufactures trying to sell new cars at more profit with tires just good enough to get the car off the lot. It’s just that you expect better from Honda.

We have a 2018 Pilot EX-L. I like that the armrests on the front captains chairs are a little larger for 2019...I'd still prefer a large center armrest. Good to see a volume knob. I was worried about not having one but it hasn't been an issue thus far. We use steering wheel controls most of the time anyway. All in all, its a very good vehicle with loads of room. For me, the exterior just looks incomplete so we added the roof rack, running boards and splash guards. Still wouldn't touch that 9-speed with a 30 ft pole. The trick here is to option up an EX-L 6-speed with everything you want. Hopefully the next generation gets the 10-speed.

Sometimes i get confused between the CR-V and Pilot but then I see the back and realize its a pilot half the time. I wish they made it at least easier to tell the difference from the front of the car

I really like the entire Pilot (sits up nice and tall, comfy, rides nice, quiet) except for one BIG thing.. The steering wheel is nice BUT the Dashboard/instrument cluster is probably the worse I have ever seen. It is unattractive and Honda decided to change everything. (Honda thinks they are improving everything but they are making things worse and harder to use. - at least with the dash/instrument cluster). Why couldn't Honda just go with a basic traditional dashboard/instrument cluster with large knobs, dials for tacho/speedo , etc.?? Dashboards in the Toyota Highlander, Mazda CX-9, Lexus RX350 (non-hybrid) are far better, easier to use, and look nicer than the dashboard in the Pilot.. Oh, and get rid of push button shifter.. Man.. I like shifting a standard traditional shifter..

To each his/her own. I have a 2018 Ridgeline with the infotainment system without the knob. Everyone complains about this for some reason. I just use the controls on the steering column 100% of the time while driving to change the station and sound as well as cycle through the display. This was a waste of time for Honda to address such a trivial complaint. Now the head unit looks jacked with this 1 protruding button sticking out.

Yes the 2016 had the paddle shifters, I finally tried using them while on the freeway in denver and I have to say I find it an annoying way to shift a car. The fact that I have to keep my hands in the same place the whole time on the wheel is annoying.

I think the new design is still too safe to the point of boring. There's no doubt that the car will be excellent is drive feel and ride quality as per Honda's usual guarantee. For me though, this segment has Kia's surprise hit in the Telluride in the lead from the exterior looks, the interior, and engine.
