Ciao Angelica, I love Milano!
My grandfather was Italian-American, and he always called fare bella figura, “Lookin’ sharp”. He was mainly a carpenter by trade, but when he went anywhere not work related, he wore a collared polo shirt, slacks, leather loafers and a matching belt. He had a thick mane of silver hair he’d comb up, for fullness, and he always wore cologne. He had swagger. Getting a “Ya look sharp, kid” from him was always the absolute pinnacle of style compliments for me.
Me, Italian, born and raised in Piedmont, grandchild of a female tailor, at first I thought: "let's see how much of a stereotype this video is" Me at the end of the video: "no ok, that is accurate"
I'm an italian girl I live in piedmont and i'm an historical tylor and a opera singer. Probably a tipically steriotipes italian girl i'have see more steriotypes in this video
When I was in Italy I saw that the women bought very few clothes each year so every item was carefully chosen. Clothes were much more expensive as well.
That's something I appreciate about europeans. TheY seem to value the environment more than having a lot of "stuff." You can create a lot with a few good pieces. It's kind of fun!
I think this is common in other European countries as well, such as France. They also tend to not have as much storage space as North Americans so that may reduce the impetus to spend, spend, spend!
We are not Italian but my mother always taught us this. Rich or poor, wear clean, ironed clothes, clean shoes and comb your hair and wear a little makeup. My mother would wake up everyday make her coffee, hair rollers on her hair and make up face done, ready for whatever. Yes the way our family looks represents us as family. But I also know now with my own family that looks aren’t everything what matters most is the inside, and that shows on the outside.
Gina Finch judgement? We judge people every day on how they present themselves. I see women about in clothes that look like p.j’s like they just rolled out of bed. Like it or not it says a lot about a persons mental state and personal habits. In the USA we have become overly casual to a ridiculous level. I’m all about creativity and self expression. In my youth I was very much into self expression. Punk Rock fashion was it for me. It took a lot of effort to look like that. There’s one main reason to get dressed appropriately: to present yourself to the world.
Gina Finch you said it...social programming. All of that should have been rejected as it hasn’t made us better people. It has been specially detrimental for women. I understand your point. It isn’t up to you to change anyone. All you and I can do is to lead by example. Peace!
As an American woman I have learned that when I am well dressed and look feminine (fare bella figura), I get more respect and better service from both men and women.
Yes! I live in Portugal , and "fare bella figura" creat a special energy around you're aura and fascinated does around you. Perfum also the key to Feel attractive.
Honestly... Italians do everything with pride and the best: best fashion house's, best cars, best leather work/goods, best artisan meat production, best gold jewelry, best furniture, best Artisan glass makers/artist, best wine, some of best food in the World!! Italy you are the definition of Class!! :)
I’m a first generation Italian American. My family always dressed to go out of the house for anything, even to go pick up the mail. Our clothes were always altered to fit properly and to our best advantage. We all took care of our skin and did our makeup and hair before leaving the house. The men in the family were the same as the women, well groomed and well dressed. We all always wore the finest fabrics we could afford, and the best haircuts. We cleaned and cared for everything we owned including our shoes & purses. These things didn’t make us feel exceptionally special, but made us feel good about ourselves. We’re all proud of our heritage! We dearly love the United States of America, our home and love contributing our heritage to this great country.
@@AnnalisaJ Thank you, Annalisa. I love your attitude, kindness, style, and your videos. I love hearing about the wonderful Italian women and all Italians. You’re a very beautiful person. Gracie😘
@@AnnalisaJ Hi, Annalisa… no, I’ve always lived in the U.S.A., in South Florida. I’ve been to Italy and absolutely loved everything about it… the people, food, scenery, art & culture & will hopefully be traveling there this summer to stay with my cousin, who has a home there. Her home is near where my Grandfather lived and is now owned by another cousin. I’m so excited!
Same! My mother always left the house put together, too. Not at all fancy, but always your best foot forward. She wore simple makeup- lipstick and blush.
My Japanese mother taught her seven daughters the same type of values of grooming and dressing. My fondest memory is when she would get dressed up to go to the grocery store and I'd watch her apply lipstick before walking out the door. My mother-in-law was Silcilian was a seamstress and dressed in clothes that she made 30 years before and looked very fashionable every day; she would just alter them to keep up with the fashion trends. Impeccable taste and good quality fabric.
This is exactly the way my mother dressed and the way she dressed me when I was under her dress code. Lol. And my mother favored satin bras and panties. Quality fabric. Yes. Simple and elegant yes. Details totally. She was an immigrant to America. She was elegant and understated. Had great taste. She also sewed and worked for fashion houses on 7th Avenue when fashion was still made in America. The thing was not to look "vistosa". Eh vulgar. I guess despite the costuming of the 70s, the classic style I absorbed from my mom both in dress and demeanor assisted me in getting many a good job and to be honest, many a raise because I was viewed as belonging. Yes, hard work. But many people work hard. Not as many know how to dress or speak or when not to speak, just smile politely. I learned this from my mom. Yes, Italians care too much about what others think. But there are upsides to that.
Alixandrina Fortis o oh isn;t that the truth - when you dress well people just treat you better - i recall getting upgraded on the airline, being complimented about my dress at a temp ob at a major bank... so true - plus you feel better anyway - you look in the mirror and think - i am capable of anything...
Minus the seamstress, my mom's the same. She was raised among the upper class of the Philippine South, with Chinese blood in our veins... Manners, grace & lady-like, she's perfect... When she does dress up... She looks awesome, elegant & timeless... Sadly, though I do copy, I always slip regarding grace, manners & actions. Style... Umm... Blend of punk rock & classic??? Ehh, here to learn...
Thank you so much 🤗🥰 I just watched your videos (after seeing the comment below), and I absolutely love your content and you voice is like silk! That is the best way I can describe it! I am so honored that you stopped by 🙏🏻❤️
Jamila, nice to see you here! I like what you do on your channel so much. Not at all surprised to see you in the comment section under a video such as this one. 🤗
I'm french, unlike most French women, I never knew how to dress, because I never enjoyed the process of "fare figura" ("faire bonne figure"). I have finally learnt a valuable lesson thanks to you and I want to present myself better. Grazie mille
I'm italian and I live in Italy. When I went to Cannes I fell a sense of freedom because people look me and evaluate less in Italy. In Italy if you are beautifull or anyway you have good dress people will appreciate you more. Sometimes can be a problem. People speack a lot about dress size if someone is fatten... When I worked in a little enterprise every every day women spoke about dress to buy. Finally I eat alone...
Francesca, ti capisco al 100%!!! Even my own mamma use to say I was chunky se mangiavo un po’ di più! 😂😂😂 un bacione, ti sei bella come sei tesoro ✨❤️❤️❤️
How incredible!!! I’m 18 and I was born here in Brazil but my bisnonno (great grandfather) was born in Noale (a small community based in Veneto), so I am also trying to learn more about our culture. In which side of that beautiful country were u born at? 😍
As a Sicilian American, I too love dressing up every day. I try to stay traditional not trendy when I shop for clothing. I will buy handbags or shoes knowing that I will be able to wear it 15 years from now. So true about the intimate garments...makes you feel more feminine. I keep my makeup simple. Eyeliner, blush and lipstick. Enjoy your tips. Thank you.
Hi Barbara, I love it! I feel that lingerie is such a huge component to an outfit , it’s the foundation and it will definitely make you feel good! Yes like you said, very feminine ✨❤️ Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@AnnalisaJ When you said that in your video, it reminded me of my mother (my parents are from Sicily). She always said, "It's all about the undergarments." Thank you :)
I'm African American and my southern mom was all about fit, quality, and classic pieces/looks. I didn't appreciate it in my youth but her lessons "stuck" and are now like 2nd nature. So thankful she taught me so much. Thank you for this video ❤
My grandma was originally from the south and she was so well put together when I was a child. Now, the effects of dementia are affecting her and she likes to wear the same two outfits as if they’re all she has 😢
Yes, my midwestern mother taught us the same. People used to ask me why I was so dressed up. I was just dressed smart casual or business casual. I don’t know what has happened to our society.
I am half german, half italian and my nonna taught me at a very young age, when i go outside nevermind if it is going on a walk with my dog, go get lunch with some friends, i always have to look neat and pretty. I had to put on nice clothes, well combined so that everything looks neat and fine.
I am Dominican, and I was always taught to dress nicely, and I have lived in the US for most of my life now and people think I dress-up, but I am just dressing. I've always loved Italian culture and such and watching this video I realize there's a lot of similarities at least in dressing.
I completely understand what you are saying, my own husband of 20 years sometimes still asks “why are you dressing up” and I tell him “no I’m just dressing!” 🥰❤️
@@vcp365 Exactly! I was get asked so much about it, but the more people I meet the more I realize it's a very foreign concept, and in the US it's a lot more laid back. People wear sweatpants and leggings where I was raised to not do that unless you're in the gym 😆
@@vcp365 Indeed, I am cuban and my mother never owned a pair of tennis shoes nor jeans and when she traveled she dressed up, including stockings and a jacket!!!! No lounge wear in public!!!! oh I miss my Mama
I am Italian American and I was also taught the importance of putting some effort into your appearance when you go out. I also learned to sew at an early age and made many of my own clothes in high school. When you know how to construct a garment , you know how to take it apart to alter it . The fit of a garment can make an inexpensive outfit look expensive or an expensive outfit look cheep. I always made my clothes fit properly and altered many clothes for my children.
I learned to sew in my 30s, and I think it is such an underappreciated skill now. It is very freeing to not be constrained by what "the rack" offers, and made me so much more aware of how things fit my body, and how good fabrics can impact the drape and fit of clothes.
The Italian woman has a natural / spontaneous good taste in dressing and is always elegant even with simple things. I have lived in Italy for more than 30 years and for me it is not the same thing for them it is simple and natural, in the small towns of the smaller cities and in the centers of the big cities, the women are really elegant, and they care a lot about accessories, shoes, colors and so on, it seems to me that they do not make any effort but that it is a natural gift but not only that, their good taste is also reflected in the food , wine, the interior furnishings of their homes "everything must always be in place" etc etc, I really love this Italian style
I'm asian, Indonesian to be precise, and i never remember any of my family members teaching me on how to properly dress. So thank you so much for this! I will most definitely share this video to my friends and relatives as well ☺
Cara Annalisa, I'm Mexican but I travel to Italy every summer. My fiends there told me that I'm so brave because I was wearing a red blouse, and the next day a bold pink one. I see that they prefer black or neutral clothes, of course wearing amazing accessories, like big necklaces or brazaletes. I tried to copy that look.... But honestly that's not my style. Thanks for ur great tips. Ciao bella!
Carolina! I love that you embrace your bold and fun color! Yes unfortunately Italy is a bit guilty of thinking some things are reserved for certain age... I still love it ❤️🥰🥰
@@Tayra696. This is true. I have also noticed when I visited Italy many times and places like Greece ie The Mediterranean they don’t like to wear black as “everyday clothes” as they view black as being in mourning! 🤷🏼♀️
I was adopted but my birth parents were both Italian. You are right about bella figura being in the blood. I put on makeup to go to the grocery store. I get asked why am so dressed up all the time, and I often get compliments on how I dress. I feel vindicated! 😂
I love that you say it’s felt in the blood. There’s a generational identity crisis in my family. My dad’s example, and those of his sisters, my aunts, are what taught me the advise in this video(: I resonate so much with the outlook because it’s how I was raised. As I grow into the woman I want to become, and as I listen to my intuition, I find myself resonating a lot with European Latin cultures. I think a 23 and me will help but I know it’ll be a big mix. Your story gave me confidence to keep following my gut and keep learning about the one I feel and have always felt most connected to. There’s a town in Italy with my last name, and I’ve always taken that as a sign. I will visit one day!
It’s so sweet how you dress for your body in a positive way. Nowadays you always hear ‘wear whatever you want regardless of what looks good on you’ so much that it’s refreshing to see this. As a Bengali woman our party clothes are very decorative and it is pretty much acceptable to wear heavy earrings, necklace, bracelet etc all in a set but ever since I’ve started focusing on one statement piece instead of overloading myself with jewellery( I believe that should be reserved only for brides)I can see how much nicer it looks!
“Ill-fitting lingerie can be a fashion disaster” YES!! My mom (she’s not Italian, her family is Irish-American) always use to tell me that your bra is so important, one of the most important parts of your outfit. I see so many girls who wear the wrong bra size and style for their body so often and it annoys me so much! They could be wearing an amazing outfit, but if their bra isn’t supportive and their underwear is too small it ruins the whole thing.
I'm an Italian girl (Sicilian) and everything you said is so accurate. The concept of "Bella figura" is true, maybe sometime is too much, because we (especially girls) are pressed by that, but often it makes us look so good and feminine
My grandmother is Italian and she dresses like this. Her entire wardrobe is blacks and whites but the patterns and textures and fabrics have a distinct flair that's true to her personality. She dresses well no matter the occasion, especially in the evening. She is an incredible chef and for my mom's birthday she is making eggplant parmesan and cannoli. She was born and raised in New York and either her parents or grandparents were Italian immigrants. She speaks fluent Italian and we had the privilege to visit Italy with her in 2019. We went to Milan, Venice, Florence, Cinque Terre and Bologna. It was such a joy and I'd love to go back some day.
i'm Italian on my mother's side but raised in the UK, and this video made me realise how deep rooted my Italian-ness is. So so proud of my heritage. Love
I am not italian, but i love the European style, those high quality fabrics, that are light and flowy, simple but elegant. And, i love your tips. I finally found my style during this pandemic time and its a lot like you mentioned in your video. Thank you for sharing, proud filipina here.💕
My italian grandmom back in the day when she would baby sit me, she still would "put on her face", add the jewelry, and look put together just to babysit a child. I admired her effort for being presentable no matter what the day had in store
My grandma shows me how you need to dress to succeed. Never dress poorly, take good care of your hair and nails and your body. She knows how to love herself whilst giving to people She still impressed people even till her last days. A legend in our town. Embrace our own beauty disregard of our body type and age. Only then you know how to give good love to people.
Both of my parents are Sicilian and my mother taught me to always dress up nicely before leaving the house. Look presentable and never leave the home without wearing perfume. It should not be overwhelming but as she would say gentle on the nose. My father was the same way. He always dressed up. In fact when he moved to the US, he became a fashion model in New York. I do the same. My husband is Italian and he always gets dressed up before leaving the house. Never sloppy.
I also want to comment I used to be very put together for my everyday before the pandemic, after the endless lock downs, isolation etc. I almost gave up....I must admit, but watching this video made me think about recovering that side of my personality that has been fading for the past year. Anybody else's feeling the same way?
Eloisa, I think it is a very normal reaction, and I have been there too, but once I told myself to just do it, then it had a ripple effect and made me feel better, and better and I just kept going. I am sure others can relate. XOXO
I 100% agree! You are right it is a very European thing. I spoke about Italy as I have direct personal experience, but yes I know what you are saying! 🤗❤️✨
Nura Husakovic I am Polish, and there was no chance I would go to corner shop for bread rolls without putting nice, clean clothes, clean shoes, I now live almost 20 years in UK and got more relaxed as people here don't really care to dress up when going short trip to shops or when dropping kids to school. Just my observation
Annalisa, you are so articulate ! It was a pleasure to hear you describe Italian style, particularly the thought process behind it. I did not mind at all that you did not use a picture to illustrate every point, your words were adequate, I consider myself a visual person but in your case it was different. I am not Italian but today I realized that in my personal style I follow most of the rules you described.
YOU are beautiful! 💖 As an Italian American woman I always make it a point to look my best when I go out. Even to the grocery store. I think women should try and get away from the every day jeans to wearing casual skirts, shifts and shirt dresses with some cute comfortable shoes. Those things always make me feel more feminine. Plus, you never know who you’re going to run into! 😘
Thank you! ❤️ it’s so true! My mom always told me to be ready for anything from a special occasion to an emergency! It’s amazing what it does to how we feel isn’t it?! ❤️🌼❤️
Girls, Russians have a proverb: what if you encounter your destany but you are not ready? ( means outfit). Appriciate the idea of good underwear - what excectly I need to add to my wordrobe. With love from Moscow region)
@blah blah blah I love pants and I wear them often, I do think pants can be very elegant and classy! The 1940’s style Kathrine Hepburn wore pants beautifully 🥰❤️❤️ great comment!
I just prefer skirts and dresses, they are so much more comfortable than the torture of jeans. I like trousers, too, if they are comfy, but after 20 years of painted-on skinnies, I stopped wearing them.
Yes I very much agree! I first learned this concept by watching my mother-in-law in Italy getting dressed to go out. She always dressed so well for the occasion! (It doesn't hurt that she was a seamstress when she was younger). And always tugging at us here and there to make sure we are just right before leaving. She gifted me with many beautiful pieces of clothing over the years. Oh, I miss her 💗
A few days into my first visit to Italy 1982, I had high healed wooden mules on and was wearing a backless black dress to a party. It had sequins highlighting the back area and received so many lovely compliments. I also had bought a gold tone lipstick and a new handbag. I felt like the queen bee!! back home in Scotland I never wore the dress or shoes but 2 years later, back in italy, out they came. so very lovely.I also feel that I brought a palazzo pants trend back to Glasgow and two years later a black and white cigar pant trend. All items were good quality and lasted forever. I adore the Italian style. My only faux pas one year was a Venezia hat!! But it made for the best photo ever with the sunset behind my auburn hair with the hat on top!! such wonderful memories. xxx loved this video thank you xxx

I must be Italian that was transplanted to the USA, raised in Texas and brought up in the AME church.. EVERYTHING that was mentioned here, is exactly was has been ingrained in me since birth.. Anyone can throw on clothes and dress nice, but there is a “big” difference between dressing nice and being “well dressed”.. BIG difference..❤️
I had been looking for a decade for a bra-friendly silk tank dress, but they always had camisole/spaghetti straps. Finally, LilySilk just came out with one that is gorgeous and affordable. I got it in black, the colors are limited (gray and rust), and it is does incredible things for my, far from perfect, female shape! I really hope they make this classic in some lighter colors soon.
Lol this makes so much sense. My Italian Grandparents always made sure they were done up and well put together before even going to the corner store and they definitely passed that down to the rest of the family. Also I love love love my heels
Just discovered your channel and I'm glad that you cover Italian style as we commonly hear of French chic. I find that I align with the Italian philosophy as I always "get ready" before I leave the house no matter how casual the errand. I put on full makeup, ad some jewelry and heels with my jeans and a cute top.
As an Italian woman I totally agree with the concept of “fare bella figura”. My mother used to say “I will not go out with you, if you are dressed like that. Go get changed”. 😅 There is one additional point that was not mentioned: the importance of tights. These complement the entire figure and no elegant woman would omit to wear them (except in the summer if reeeeeeally hot weather).
I feel like I’m dressing like this now that I’m older and more fabulous😄 It feels very intuitive to me. I wish I had had a mother or women in my life that taught me these things much earlier in my life. You’re a lovely lady and I appreciate your wonderful advice❤️
Hello Bailey, thank you for your beautiful worlds and I love being older and fabulous! I am definitely more unapologetic on what I wear and I have more confidence than when I was younger. I dress for me now! A warm virtual hug 🥰🙏🏻
I just moved to Italy from the U.S. back in January and I absolutely love it here. I am enjoying learning everything I can about Italian language and culture. I love dressing up and this video was very helpful! I can’t wait to try out the tips! Grazie mille!!
I am an Italian American and both my parents always talked about how important it was to dress well no matter what you are doing. I really enjoyed this video as the tips you brought up reminded me of my mom and grandmother and how they always presented themselves well.
My great grandma from mom’s side used to say “remember girls, you can wear trash bags but if your nails, hair and feet are a mess you’ll go nowhere. Hair and hands are the first thing a person notice when you introduce yourself” My nonna, my dad’s are mom, (she had cancer) and 2 years ago when she passed away, my nonna forced nonno to keep up which her rolling pin routine because she couldn’t allow people to see her totally trasandata (trashy looking) when she went to the “terminally sick hospital” before passing away.
Thank you for sharing! Yes our grandma were so proud and loved being polished and presentable no matter what! I think it’s beautiful 🤗❤️❤️❤️ bellissima memoria, grazie per condividere con noi! 🥰
Oh Jackie you are right, so true! We have a say in Italy that roughly translates to “they don’t own a mirror” referring to an ill fitting outfit on someone. Not kind I know, but we take style seriously 🤣❤️❤️
I am an indian and I am interested in the European culture specifically and I love the way you talk through things about being balanced and enhancing our features love it learned alot today. I do that a lot with dressing up for running errands I tend to be as presentable as possible your tips were definitely very helpful thank you so much 💖
You may not feel comfortable wearing a sari in western locations but wouldn’t it be beautiful to honor your own culture by merging the two. Indian fabrics can be colorful and elegant. Indian women look very feminine in the draped fabrics. I don’t think I have ever seen a man that didn’t look dashing in a Nehru style jacket. Annalisa’s guidelines are great and general enough to be applied in other cultures as well. There is beauty and style everywhere on the planet. We just need to be open to it.
@@katiewinn5468 Hell yess I totally agree with you I love wearing a saree or a kurta I love the traditional look and by merging these together would create such a beautiful thing ✨💖
I live in San Antonio Texas and am Italian. My Grandparents were from Italy and I follow all of the style philosophies you spoke of and I am always complimented and noticed. Love your video!
Beautiful Italian Woman , like you Annalisa, and my Nona, Mother & Aunts !🌸🎉🌹Always, always here in the States, wore their & looked their very Best ! In the 60'-70's it was the most beautiful thing to see them all at one of our cousin's weddings looking like Hollywood's glamorous stars✨ My mother who sewed our best clothing, would get patterns of gorgeous suits & dresses, gowns that Stars like Elisabeth Taylor, or Sofia wore, and she dressed my sweet Nona and aunts ⭐️💫 We look back now in our photo albums to this day and are amazed how elegant & beautiful they looked‼️Everything that you said, is absolutely Classic Italian Femininity 🌸❣️I'm so happy to have found your videos ! Grazie‼️
Antonia, wow what a memory! I am always enchanted by those who can recreate garments just by looking at them! It’s pure wizardry and amazing skill! I can totally envision what you wrote, the fabrics must have been gorgeous too! ❤️🥰 thank you for sharing!!
Nice video! Everything you said resonates well with me. I was taught at a young age to buy timeless, feminine, elegant, fit and quality pieces (and not have a lot of clothes) and I am not Italian. Somehow the hustle and bustle of my life has made me reach for practical and inexpensive pieces in the last 10 years. Possibly because I now have children, a full time job from home. The Italian fashion is reflective of culture and lifestyle
Yeeess; as a Swiss international student I’ve had so many people in my school asking me why I was dressed up and felt very overdressed for example when people go to brunch in a jogging and sweater, but I try to stay true to my culture and education and dress nicely.
Ciao Annalisa!
I am Italian. I love the part were you talk about our ability to know our body and find clothes that fit us better, enhancing and focusing on the parts of our body that we love the most. I think this really helps with confidence and with that attitude that many Italian girls and women have. It's not about being beautiful. It's all about knowing and loving yourself. Thank you really accurate video!
I definitely agree with the the “bold” description. I’m from Melbourne and we wear mostly black. Living in Calabria for the last two and a bit years I hear all the time that I dress boringly. I think it’s mainly to do with colour - the women here wear much more bold colours such as red. I also haven’t conquered cobblestones yet so I’m wearing more flats. Since I’ve moved here though I’ve started having my clothes tailored and I’m a regular customer at Intimissimi, so I’m learning!
You've captured the essence of being Italian so well! I've always embraced the art of looking my best no matter where I'm going thanks to my Italian heritage.
This is all very true. It summarizes a European aesthetic. And let’s not forgets about the all important coat or blazer to pull together the quality shoes and bag in a harmonious color palette!
I'm not Italian born, I was born in Cape Town. My late mom was a seamstress and had a clothing business. As children we were raised to be dressed impeccable. This continued throughout my life. Less is more, quality priorty. I never leave my house without lipstick and suitable clothing , even when going for walks. I feel good and will continue this way of life. Thank you for your lovely videos.
I'm a Slovakian, moving to Rome in september and I'm terrified that I am gonna stand out for not dressing well enough 🙈 I have to watch all of your videos now and make some fast changes during the summer!
Vladimira, you will be just fine, let it happen organically, immerse yourself in the culture and the rest will come naturally ❤️❤️☀️🌸 have a beautiful adventure and keep us updated! 🥰
I've watched so many videos that talk about French style and I have been looking for one that highlights Italian style as well. I don't know why I didn't see this earlier, but I am so glad I found it (and you) now!
My mom always used to tell me how underwear always need to be in a perfect state and matching, just as socks "because if you have to go to the hospital you need to "fare bella figura"". For an italian born and raised, I agree 100%. there's also the make up, the hair and the perfume.
yes! quality basics! something that is so easy to find in italy and sooo sooo hard to find abroad! I struggle every time I am away from IT because of this
When i think about Italian style, I think of all that you mentioned. I also think of a little bit of flamboyance, a leopard print or colorful patterns splashed across sumptuous fabrics like silk or impeccable suiting from Milan.❤️😊
You can notice differences from one area to another: I live in Romagna and people are very put together and stylish, but tend to wear much more coloured items than in northern Italy such as Milan or Genoa.
Everything you said is so true! My parents are from Abbruzzo and immigrated to Canada but we were raised exactly like this. It is in our blood. My father used to always say buy one good piece instead of 10 pieces of garbage! I was always aware of how I presented myself and never went out with clothes I would wear inside the house. Putting it in this perspective has made sense of my whole life!
For some time, I have been searching to define my style of dressing. After watching this video, it's clear that my preference for clothing and accessories is indeed Italian style. It's classy and it's chic, and I simply love it!
What I discovered its that im more towards my italiano /greek heritage than I through! All your points were like engraved in my DNA and likes!! I love Italian Designers and brands!!!
I have noticed that Italians wear a lot of black. It has a timeless appeal and is a colour that can never go out of style. You are so graceful and elegant. 🌸
Great point about elegance, femininity, sexiness etc. being much more strongly linked to your attitude and the way you carry yourself than the clothes on your body! 1000% agree.
I’m mainly of Irish & German heritage but I was raised with the same values expressed in this video and dress accordingly as well. I love feeling put together! At my wedding I was paid paid the “fare bella figura” by one the guests, an older Italian immigrant relative on my husband’s side. What a pleasure it is to learn the full meaning of the expression from this video. Xoxo
When I went to Italy I remember seeing women running around in their high heels and wondering how they did it! I would love to get better with walking in heels. Can you do a video about that? Also, I see a lot of parallels between French style and italian style with a key difference being, French women seem to gravitate more to flats than heels. This just based videos I watched about French vs. Italian style.
Hi Colleen, it’s so true we wear heels even when walking in uneven cobblestone streets! It’s truly an art! It’s a great idea for a video!! Italians love their high heels! Have a safe and Happy Holidays ❤️✨🥰
@@AnnalisaJ Grazie per il tuo commento. Amo i tacchi alti. Non vedo l'ora di altri video. I am using these videos to relearn Italian. I took it in High school but that was 15 years ago so Iam rusty! What are some key phrases I should relearn first? Any fashion/style phrases I should learn?
I've watched this video before and on re-watching it, it struck me about how some of the "rules" so to speak of dressing Italian, really reflect the entire Italian attitude toward life - like taking your time and enjoying your coffee, your breakfast, your dinner, taking time to enjoy life, etc. I see that reflected in what you're saying about clothes in, not just going for quality, but in having one statement piece that you are fully appreciating and inviting others to appreciate, and of the attitude about displaying what one thinks is special about her (or his, I suppose) self. I don't know if you will see this comment, but I miss your fashion videos!
Love these tips. I am trying to adapt my style to be more elegant and timeless so I’ll definitely be referring to this video again

@Sofia Zenzon so strange, it could be my biography😂
Where? I'm from Rome and I'm not seeing any of this it's maybe 10-15% of women in Italy who actually dresses like that
When I was in Italy I saw that the women bought very few clothes each year so every item was carefully chosen. Clothes were much more expensive as well.
So true! yes !
That is because italians prefer quality over quantity.

You are right there is more than the outside look, but it’s nice to feel put together I mostly do it because it makes me feel good. ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you for sharing this beautiful memory Sue! The clothes from your mother in law sound amazing! ❤️❤️
Ohhh everything here is gold! “Elegant and Understated” I love it!!!! Thank you for sharing🥰❤️❤️❤️
Alixandrina Fortis o oh isn;t that the truth - when you dress well people just treat you better - i recall getting upgraded on the airline, being complimented about my dress at a temp ob at a major bank... so true - plus you feel better anyway - you look in the mirror and think - i am capable of anything...

Yes, 100% spot on! Thank you for bringing up this pout it’s so important ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I have lived in Italy for more than 30 years and for me it is not the same thing for them it is simple and natural, in the small towns of the smaller cities and in the centers of the big cities, the women are really elegant, and they care a lot about accessories, shoes, colors and so on, it seems to me that they do not make any effort but that it is a natural gift
but not only that, their good taste is also reflected in the food , wine, the interior furnishings of their homes
"everything must always be in place" etc etc, I really love this Italian style
Pilar, indeed it should be very effortless! I love your observations!❤️

Cara Annalisa, I'm Mexican but I travel to Italy every summer. My fiends there told me that I'm so brave because I was wearing a red blouse, and the next day a bold pink one. 😜 yes!!! It’s just nice to feel put together, like you I am ready to face anything and feel way more confident if I am a bit polished! ❤️
Lived in Milan for a year, they dress like old money even if they shop at H&M. Not a lot of loud prints, but interesting hair.

“Ill-fitting lingerie can be a fashion disaster” YES!! She was born and raised in New York and either her parents or grandparents were Italian immigrants. She speaks fluent Italian and we had the privilege to visit Italy with her in 2019.
Yessss! 🌸❤️✨
Yeeesss!!! 🥰✨ I love Italian grandparents! ❤️
Thanks for sharing! XOXO
The whole alteration point is so true😀 My Italian mother-in-law and my husband get just about anything altered and they always look so well dressed.
It makes a huge difference ❤️
Annalisa at 18: "I love my knees, so I am showing them with my ripped jeans!"
😂 love it! (I use to hide my ripped jeans from my mom when I was 14) 😂😂
As an Italian woman I totally agree with the concept of “fare bella figura”. My mother used to say “I will not go out with you, if you are dressed like that. Go get changed”. 😅
There is one additional point that was not mentioned: the importance of tights. These complement the entire figure and no elegant woman would omit to wear them (except in the summer if reeeeeeally hot weather).
Yes tights!!!! Ohhhh I love tights, don’t use them much in California but I use to have such a collection! So feminine 😍🥰
Anais, prego! I hope you are savoring every second of this amazing experience ❤️❤️❤️
I am an Italian American and both my parents always talked about how important it was to dress well no matter what you are doing. I really enjoyed this video as the tips you brought up reminded me of my mom and grandmother and how they always presented themselves well.
I am so happy you have a good memory attached to this topic! Thank you so much! Ha ha yes Fare Bella Figura 😂❤️❤️
My great grandma from mom’s side used to say “remember girls, you can wear trash bags but if your nails, hair and feet are a mess you’ll go nowhere. Hair and hands are the first thing a person notice when you introduce yourself”
My nonna, my dad’s are mom, (she had cancer) and 2 years ago when she passed away, my nonna forced nonno to keep up which her rolling pin routine because she couldn’t allow people to see her totally trasandata (trashy looking) when she went to the “terminally sick hospital” before passing away.
Thank you for sharing! Yes our grandma were so proud and loved being polished and presentable no matter what! I think it’s beautiful 🤗❤️❤️❤️ bellissima memoria, grazie per condividere con noi!
🥰
My mum would say this too!
Interesting video! I grew up in Poland and I have done most of those things you mentioned intuitively just because it just looks best for me.
I think our cultures are similar in the way of how we present ourselves! ❤️❤️ one of my two best friends is from Poland!
I enjoyed this video. My biggest style tip is to keep it simple, but add one item of interest. Oh and always check yourself in a full length mirror.
Oh Jackie you are right, so true! We have a say in Italy that roughly translates to “they don’t own a mirror” referring to an ill fitting outfit on someone. Not kind I know, but we take style seriously 🤣❤️❤️
Great advice. My friend will often say, when were out, don't they have a mirror?? Often wonder why people wear what they wear!
I am an indian and I am interested in the European culture specifically and I love the way you talk through things about being balanced and enhancing our features love it learned alot today. I do that a lot with dressing up for running errands I tend to be as presentable as possible your tips were definitely very helpful thank you so much 💖
Thank you so much 🙏🏻❤️ I am glad you found this useful 🌸 have a beautiful day!
Hello Susan! Thank you so much for sharing! I am so happy you are enjoying the videos ❤️ and yay for being complimented ✨
Beautiful Italian Woman , like you Annalisa, and my Nona, Mother & Aunts !🌸🎉🌹Always, always here in the States, wore their & looked their very Best !
In the 60'-70's it was the most beautiful thing to see them all at one of our cousin's weddings looking like Hollywood's glamorous stars✨
My mother who sewed our best clothing, would get patterns of gorgeous suits & dresses, gowns that Stars like Elisabeth Taylor, or Sofia wore, and she dressed my sweet Nona and aunts ⭐️💫 We look back now in our photo albums to this day and are amazed how elegant & beautiful they looked‼️Everything that you said, is absolutely Classic Italian Femininity 🌸❣️I'm so happy to have found your videos !
🤗❤️❤️❤️
Keep it up! I love the elegance & culture international students bring to my school!
❤️❤️😙
The way you express the artist in every Italian woman, is so charming. Looking forward to your next video.
Thank you!! ❤️😘
It’s so easy to focus on the negative!! But we all have beautiful assets! Thank you for the love❤️❤️❤️
The two most important tips that I always follow are to make sure that my clothes fit me well and good undergarments. Thanks for the great tips!
Those are great guidelines! Thank you ❤️❤️
I definitely agree with the the “bold” description.
I love intimissimi! Aww the infamous cobblestones... I am out of training on this one as well 😜🥰
You've captured the essence of being Italian so well! I've always embraced the art of looking my best no matter where I'm going thanks to my Italian heritage.
Thank you Mara ❤️❤️✨
This is all very true. It summarizes a European aesthetic. And let’s not forgets about the all important coat or blazer to pull together the quality shoes and bag in a harmonious color palette!
✨✨🥰 yes!!
The way you explained everything painted beautiful pictures inside my head!!!
Thank you so much! ✨🙏🏻
Thank you for sharing your beautiful story and heritage! Less is more in my books too, and quality over quantity 100% ❤️❤️
Glad it was helpful! Thank you so much. I love the observation 🥰
My mom always used to tell me how underwear always need to be in a perfect state and matching, just as socks "because if you have to go to the hospital you need to "fare bella figura"". For an italian born and raised, I agree 100%. there's also the make up, the hair and the perfume.
❤️😘
yes! quality basics! something that is so easy to find in italy and sooo sooo hard to find abroad! I struggle every time I am away from IT because of this
Eva, yes you are so right ❤️❤️✨😄
The best fashion tips I have heard since years ! Spot on !
Thank you so much, I appreciate it 🥰
When i think about Italian style, I think of all that you mentioned. I also think of a little bit of flamboyance, a leopard print or colorful patterns splashed across sumptuous fabrics like silk or impeccable suiting from Milan.❤️😊
You are absolutely 100% correct! We love our animal prints too!!!
I might make a mini series with some look books ! ❤️
You can notice differences from one area to another: I live in Romagna and people are very put together and stylish, but tend to wear much more coloured items than in northern Italy such as Milan or Genoa.
@Cosetta Venturi, you are right, I too grew up in the area and I noticed that! ❤️❤️❤️
Well done, simple video. As a native New Yorker, I agree with everything you mentioned. It just takes a little time and effort. Thank you
Thank you so much! I love New York vibrancy !! ❤️
I love the femininity that Italian women exude, very inspiring, love the silk flowy fabrics too
Everything you said is so true!
Thank you Tina! It’s true it’s in our blood... even after all these years 🥰❤️❤️❤️
Abruzzo (like Campania, Puglia and other southern regions) has a great tailoring tradition.
Just for mentioning, Brioni is from there.
For some time, I have been searching to define my style of dressing. After watching this video, it's clear that my preference for clothing and accessories is indeed Italian style. It's classy and it's chic, and I simply love it!
I love this! And everything is so adaptable and customizable to your style and likes ❤️❤️❤️
What I discovered its that im more towards my italiano /greek heritage than I through! All your points were like engraved in my DNA and likes!! I love Italian Designers and brands!!!
I really think it’s in our DNA 🌼😚🌼❤️❤️
I do love how Italian women dress, it is certainly timeless and elegant but also simple 😍
❤️❤️
I have noticed that Italians wear a lot of black. It has a timeless appeal and is a colour that can never go out of style.
You are so graceful and elegant. 🌸
Hi Rashi, I love black too, it’s easy to wear! 🙏🏻 thank you 🥰
I agree with the terms that you described. I was in Italy back in the spring of 2003 and enjoyed being in Venice.
Hello John, Venice is so beautiful. So much history.
Hopefully we both get to return soon. Thank you for your comment ✨☀️
I always see French woman , I’m happy to see Italian woman 💕
Aww thank you! ✨
Great point about elegance, femininity, sexiness etc. being much more strongly linked to your attitude and the way you carry yourself than the clothes on your body! 1000% agree.
✨ I truly think how you carry yourself is everything! ✨❤️❤️
I come from an italian family, the timeless pieces never goes out,and yes statement pieces we do have aswel.😙
🥰😘
I agree with you, Annalise... I always dress well, makeup and red lipstick applied even when working out. I’m a true Italian woman and so proud of it
I always loved Italian style. Thank you for your tips x
Thank you! You are welcome!
Xoxo
Thank you so much! Awww yes Fare Bella Figura! I love the story! ❤️❤️
Awww il tuo Italiano e molto buono!
I will think of some phrases... 🥰❤️✨
@@AnnalisaJ Grazie. Lo apprezzo! Buon Natale!
@@AnnalisaJ a good start are kitten heels 21/2 inches. I can run in them.
Italians are very elegant in their styling . It's my favorite way to dress ❤
I love the concept of focusing on what you love about yourself so you can flaunt it 🔥
Mee too! ❤️🥰
I definitely want to start getting my clothes tailored. Great tips!
It makes such a difference! 🥰❤️
I’ve been to Italy twice, the shoes there are priceless and love Italian shoes.
They last forever!! ❤️
oh my goodness after being stuck in the house I really needed this so helpful
I think many of us do, myself included😄! I’m glad you enjoyed it !
Your voice is so soothing and yes, polished.
🙏🏻thank you!!
