Update: I've put together a free PDF guide called 7 RULES TO TIMELESS STYLE, to help you build your style in a more timeless way - like I think French women do. You can request this free guide here: www.justineleconte.com/timeless 😘
@justineleconte hi, this link didn't work. It sent me an email asking me to confirm that I wanted the PDF, I clicked to confirm but nothing was ever sent after that. Just wanted to let you know!
I once waited overnight for a Ralph Lauren blazer. It fit PERFECTLY, but it was spendy for my budget. Slept on it, thought more about it, and it still looks great today (20 years later).
I have a similar bag - I paid half my salary for it, but I still carry it 18 years later! However, I had to sleep on it for more than 24 hours, it took me a month, in fact)))) Btw, it meets Justine's advice - I can put in it everything for a day!
I agree. Even when they say let’s get right into it, they still yammer on. This is a big turnoff for me. I usually move on. I love the way she gets right to it!
I'm swiss-german and there's similar fashions in Switzerland! However I currently live in America so people always think I'm overdressed, but I take it as a compliment.
Fangoddess I grew up in Switzerland aswel 😁👍🏻i lived in London for almost 10 yrs and people always told me i looked so classy even though for me it's just normal clothes 😂
Fangoddess I'm an American and people often think I'm overdressed. It seems just because I don't wear oversized t-shirts nor go around showing too much skin when others do. The other day a co-worker said my style was "very simple". I took it as a compliment though I'm not so sure she meant it that way (as her style is no where near simple).
I’m a black woman from the US and just realized I have been French most of my adult life . Minimum makeup , basic quality pieces that fit well(timeless) , SOOOO much skincare lol ( even my 11/8 year old girls have a simple skin routine ) etc . I thank my mom for these instructions
"Purchase quality over quantity four points". 1. Does that piece fit with at least half of my wardrobe? 2. Will I want to wear that for at least 10 - 20 years or is it something that will will go out of fashion? 3. Can I was it at least 50 times and it's still going to look good and retrain it's shape? 4. Can you go home without buying the piece and if you still want it after 24 hours you purchase the piece?
#1 is because of the size of Paris apartments. Similar problem to New York apartments. Very limited space. So things you buy need to work with your limited wardrobe. Then the biggest accessory is your scarf which you can change easily. Summer or winter everyone (men and women) wears scarves in Paris.
@@janearcher3834 haha yes I don't know the word I wanted in English but when your throat is exposed to cold and wind, you get sick more easily. I don't know if that's because it's more sensitive or what but that's my experience ^^'
I like all of your videos. They are succinct. You speak well and are articulate. You are enthusiastic and have a good sense of humor, but what yo u have to say is "no nonsense." I like the neutral background which does not distract from what you have to say. Your videos are some of my favorites to date. Good job.
JUSTINE! I just wanted to thank you for all your terrific advice. I just last Saturday bought a little black dress... and thanks to you, it's one size larger than I usually buy! I've always been paranoid about what the number sizes say and didn't want to think I was "fat" because the number went up, despite different brands fitting in different ways. This time, in a brand in which I have numerous pieces (capsule wardrobe territory!), I bought a black, sleeveless, slightly flared dress in a totally packable fabric. And it flares even more than it might because it's looser because it's bigger, which means I feel loose and free under it. I could dress it up for a night on the town or wear it as-is for a funeral, throw a (matching!) black jacket on top with a bright scarf for business or a funky belt and bohemian jewelry for window shopping on a destination street. I'm 68 and it's taken me all this time to totally hone in on my style - I had the "bones" but you've helped me focus my aim. Merci, mon cheri! (From Los Angeles)
After living in France for a while, my daughter's and I developed our scale of "Frenchness". If we are below 6, we have to go back upstairs and rethink before we leave the house. Your tips are exactly what we learned over the years - we stick to natural colours and fabrics xx
Justine forgot to mention that it helps immensely to be tall and slender when applying the French chic look. I have beautiful skin, high cheekbones, and glossy hair. However, at 5'3" tall, with short legs, and a thick waist, I look more chunk than chic, no matter what I wear. Nice video, though.
@@ThePlataf You're right, since the average height for French women is about 5'5" (165 cm.) The average female model height is 5'9" (175 cm), which most of would consider tall. For me, anything over 5'4" (163 cm) looks tall.
Proper tailoring is so key - and no one cut fits all body types. That's why learning to do quick alterations at home is a game changer. My sewing machine is my best friend and I'm constantly taking in seams, letting out waist bands, hemming cuffs. Sometimes I even make small alterations as part of getting dressed in the morning if what I want to wear doesn't fit quite right. So many great pieces don't need to be returned if you know how to make them really fit your body.
My mom always said "buy things that last" but nowadays it is so hard to find good quality items... Even the brands my mom used to buy for me when I was a child aren't the same now and I can't afford top stylists' clothes :/
+Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde in that mindset, there is a lot of logics but also some contradictions and some clichés. I think it's fine to smile about all that 😉 Thanks for the kind words.
Happy to say that I have: - White shirt - Tailored blazer - Ballerinas or loafers - (Little) black dress - Pair or dark blue jeans - Huge scarf - Purse where everything fits - Back and pointy high heels I am still searching for: - Perfect T-Shirt ( Like Justine, I am very tall with a long torso) - Turtleneck sweater in a cosy fabric
I love love love Justine's posts. The BEST fashion advice for those who want to evoke timeless style. Fads and trends come and go but this is the real deal. Follow her advice to look confident and feel fantastic at any age.
Dressing for your best fit is so important. Most Americans are not aware that good tayloring is key. I also noticed that French women are very clear on what looks good on them. They don't do fads. It's a classic clean look. God Bless Coco Channel ❤️. Thank you for the excellent tips.
What a lovely young lady ! Since civility seems to be a thing of the past, I would nominate Mlle Leconte to create a series on manners too. To dress and present oneself in an appropriate and thoughtful way -- like it matters because it does (!)-- goes hand in hand with well-mannered and civil behavior in all places and at all times, for all situations. These life skills are without borders, and Mlle Leconte is wonderful. With impeccable American English. Bravo.
Agree with all you said. Along with that Mlle Leconte provides a Master Class on how to do a youtube video - all content. presented in a clear and orderly manner!
I love your point! To me elegance is so much about how you "carry yourself" and express yourself in speech and behaviour....especially in this day and age when almost everyone has access to good clothes but they turn out so disappointing upon contact...
People should dress howeber they wish… im french, i dont dress like her. French people can ne bully like if you dont dress like she describe. And it is not what i call polite. I dont like how she generalises . Not all french women dress or act the same way. For me it is too gimmicky.
What a fun video. I admit my eyes opened a little larger on your comment about lighter jeans. I tend to favour darker jeans personally but didn't realize how damaging to the environment lighter jeans were in their production. Thanks for all the great information. Definitely going to arm myself with this on my next shopping trip. :)
My mom always called me 'frenchie' and until watching your videos I never fully grasped her reference to the French way of life until stumbling upon your channel. I simply adore you! Your content is incredibly useful💚thank you
All great rules. Especially the "should last 10-20 years and 50 washings." Except for high heels, which are grotesque torture devices that only a podiatrist could love.
I didn't score to poorly. My problem is finding replacements for those key pieces once they wear out. Fast fashion seems to have taken over everywhere and the quality is really lacking.
I have 6 out of 10 of the pieces, but a large reason I don't have more is the same problem! I have been searching for the perfect white tee for YEARS and have come home with a few but most don't really live up to what I am looking for. Same thing with the sweater, the heels, and the other colors of tees... the quality is often poor and if I DO find a high quality item it is often not long enough for my long torso.
Katherine Swanson I can completely relate. I went to a fairly large department store recently and tried on over a dozen white button downs. I came home empty handed. So frustrating! Let us knownif you ever find that white T. It's on my list too.
Di M and Katharine: If you can stand to shop online ( my schedule dictates it most of the time ) might I suggest Winter Silks? The name of the company is somewhat misleading... they have year 'round pieces. I'm a hard working teacher-writer from Texas and I don't mind a bit saying I love their off Season sales ya'll!!!😎
You´re right. For me, due to the shape of my legs, I prefer to wear knee-lenght (or shorter) A-shaped skirts, , but this year you can only find shorts. They are pretty, I admitt, but very unconfortable for me.
3 online brands that have good quality items, but also environmentally friendly and ethical brands are: People Tree, Grüne Erde and Hessnatur. All 3 brands are fairly different from each other, so hopefully you'll find something you like. The prices are between mid-to-high for high-street standard, but the quality is far superior. And people tree does some great sales too, where you can get a summer dress for £30, which is very reasonable.
I love this topic! It's really so hard to find quality clothing that are properly tailored. I live in North America so much of the clothing are fast fashion and it's disappointing to see how younger generations are dressing and presenting themselves. We need more educational videos like this!!
unfortunately it's often the case that fast fashion is the only thing available. Online shopping is great, but for people like me with an odd body shape I really need to physically try things on. You're right though a lot of what's on offer is garbage
@@peepindis I think the real key is finding high-quality resale shops and a really good alteration shop / tailor -- or having some basic sewing skills.
I now have _ALL_ the 10 essentials. I realized that I watched this three years ago ( in France) as an American and now I seem to be on the scale of Frenchness. Even though Covid-19 has kept me in California and from returning to le Gard. Glad I absorbed the challenge. I even have the well fitting blazer and the oversized extra à la Emmannuelle Alt! Thank you @Justine!!! ❤️
Having been on all the French so called stylists on u-tube etc. yours is far and away above the others who are often plugging the clothes, earings etc. on Amazon, (the last place I'd go for anything stylish)and wouldn't be seen dead in but everything I see on your channel I love and would wear all and every style that you show. You are the only one I follow now, thank you.
Thank you so much for this! No unnecessary frills or complicated information, and something I can easily accomplish ( make list, find items, buy items, done 😊 ). In minimizing my wardrobe, I was struggling to find key pieces that would be classy wherever I go/ do, and I think the classic French chic aesthetic is where it's at. ❤
Merci beaucoup Mlle Leconte. All your points are so valid, and can help many women to focus their wardrobes on the long-term essentials, rather than the change-each-year that many women - especially American women- are trapped in.
I'm a new york woman. Fine Artist. Interior Designer. I have a great love of Paris. Just saw your TH-cam vlog by chance. Turns out I apply all of what you said to my wardrobe! I do deviate for my own personal style. But your advice is what I apply to my core wardrobe. Key foundation. I find most of my interior design color, pattern, texture play articulates to my fashion choices. Loved all you had to say. Extra loved that it implies I am a bit Parisian when it comes to my personal style w/out trying :) ! Blazer is key. I own tons. Work to play to dress. Turtle neck sweater (check) t-shirts(check) scarves( check) I own at least 25. I am shoe and bag hoarder. Glasses, hats, accessories of all kinds. Love to know what you say about accessories! I do usually apply the take one accessory off when questiong if you've over accessorized. Use that for my clients with decor! From a design meets fashion stand point, I have to agree with all your tips! I truly adore you describe as "Paris style" for my own reasons. I always have a pair or 2, cute flats in my bag. You are a girl after my own style ♡ . I subscribed. Will keep following. I 100% follow the 24 to 48 hours wait when considering an expensive wardrobe piece. If I cannot stop thinking about it, have looked at a bunch of my outfits & find the piece in question has much cross over value; I then know it's worth the purchase. If I don't think about it I know I just saved $ & return time. Thumbs up for coming across approachable, friendly & giving wonderful advice briefly but fully & easy for everyone to grasp. Not overwhelming or intimidating! Great job. I am fan. I'm a bit stir crazed as we all are; so it was fun to find and enjoy your vlog. Keep it up:) looking forward to seeing more. Oh & extra kudos for your LBD explanation! It is very true that LBD does not mean extra short. My fav LBD can fold up in my bag but long sleeved, falls just bellow knee ,exposed back. High neckline. Fitted. Something my gram told me yrs ago always stuck with me "A true fashion forward lady should always only expose 1 area of flesh in a bit of an extreme way at a time." Of course keeping season in mind. I wonder if you agree:) Be well. Stay safe & healthy & of course fashionable! I will stay tuned. Ty.
Very wise advice! I score 10 of 10 and completely agree about the 24 hour wait. But sometimes the wait lasts only until I get to the car. If I still want a piece after I have been shopping a while and I've gotten to the car, I sometimes go back to the store to purchase. Justine, you give great advice!
This is a simply fabulous video! The style of French women is unsurpassed and women all over the world can absolutely learn how to dress well from our sisters who exude magnificence!
I just found out I was totally French !! Amazing. Actually I'm Jewish and had never been to France. Once some man from France told me that I dress like a Parisian woman. I took it as a huge compliment. Always love the way those women dress. Always had a feeling France would perfectly fit me. Hope one day I'll get to see it. Love your video. My first time. Happy to discover you 🌷🌷🌷
I love this video and you have become my favorite you tube channel. I live in a very hot part of the US. Hint, its hurricane and rainy season. In Florida even CEO's wear casual. Oh something personal, I have now an autoimmune disease. I've staved myself to keep my older clothes I love. In the last month I decided to create a capsule collection and give away my wardrobe, which is so difficult, but I need clothes that fit me and you helped to accept who I am. I have a 26 year old daughter who is profoundly disabled and I love. My life went from chic to protective mum. You have encouraged me that I can be both. Thank you for your channel
Great tips. I don't want to do a capsule wardrobe, but this does make it practical when shopping for quality clothes. It makes it much easier to get dressed when things actually "go together" Thank you so much. Please keep up the videos.
Dear Justine, I just happened upon your videos and am enjoying them immensely. I wanted to put in my two centimes, as a former professional ballet dancer, I lived in pointe shoes for over three decades and wear a size 41 shoe or in the USA a 9.5, so high heels OUT, pointy toes NO WAY; I should add that I have had four surgeries on my feet, and can no longer wear a loafer(moccasin), a pump or any fully enclosed shoe i.e.: a spectator. My solution has been to wear boots that are half boot/half sandal the back is open as is the toe area(it's very sexy in its own way)the collar/shaft of the boot is about the height of my ankle, so all the cut-outs are like a sexy little dress with cut-outs. I require a stable base so I look for a heel that is a graceful wedge or a squared semi-chunky heel of 2.5" or 6.3 cm if there is a bit of a platform I can wear a 3.25" or 8.25 cm heel. Let's face it nothing gives a woman a more beautiful pitch to the derrière than a high heel. I hope this tip can help other people with foot issues. I have found a few brands of boots(yes I can wear a boot)that work with my high instep and problematic feet: Arche(made in France sold at Nordstrom and a few other places in America, Aquatalia(very fine, well-made boots from Italy also sold at Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Donald J. Pliner (made in Italy and Spain). Lest you think I am rich think again, I buy almost all of the above on eBay or other secondary market sites, once you know how the high-end shoes, boots, clothes fit and which styles work for you(there is a little homework involved)you are then able to pay as little as ten to twenty cents on the dollar for the finest footwear. I always keep wood shoe trees in mine or at the very least use tightly packed newspaper not only maintain the shape but to absorb moisture and if they are suede, brush them regularly with an appropriate suede brush.
Justine, I love your videos, you know your profession well! Would like to see some videos for senior women as we still like to dress up and want to look our best. Thanks!
Happiness! According to this video, this American is 100% French (my Burberry raincoat is from 1984) and two of my purses (for special occasions are either a Chanel style inherited from my Mom or a Ferragamo that I bought in 1982)! I buy high quality classics always - both new and via resale boutiques, thrift shops and ebay. My wardrobe is now much smaller and always chic! I love your videos and advice; thank you so much!
These are great tips and more important than you'd think! I changed through 3 outfits getting ready for work this morning. Maybe it was just a case of "the Mondays" but I think it had something to do with my wardrobe.
Yes, that would be a great video idea. I've been looking for fedoras with a 2" or 2.5" brim for a long time and maybe a cloche or Panama hat. I love the Saint Laurent and Maison Michel hats are gorgeous (but pricey). I would love to find some more reasonable but good quality, great looking hats. Please do a video on what to look for in a hat, the fit, the qualities, the brands, etc. I'd probably watch it multiple times. I've been dying for a vid like that and I haven't really found any yet. xx, SS
Thank you Justine - this series is soooo good. I appreciate your practicality. Your comments about bags are spot on - so many of us carry our lives around in our bags. I also loved your rules about what to buy as well - and the fact that you do not prioritise style over substance (as so many people/magazines do) is so refreshing. I love your accent - I could listen to you all day!
I had two weeks in Paris during my PhD in England in 2001. On my third morning walking up St Germain, I realised I had a different perspective on my style, and that all my longings to that point had just needed a dose of French elan to form into my core aesthetic. I bought an Agnes b cashmere pashmina that day, and the rest of my classics in charity shops. Never looked back. Thanks, Justine. Thanks, Paris. Vive La France.
so enjoy your discussing. I have been watching you for over a year and have been able to re look and think about my wardrobe and focus on what is needed instead of what I like. It is important to have a real discussion about "what do you want your style to be", taking control of the LOOK. Thank you so much. Every preteen needs your lessons.
It is so important to have your own essential pieces so you always feel stylish and it make getting dressed so much easier. I don't wear blazers but I have a great black jacket that I love and other equivalent pieces. Cheers!
I have a collection of LBDs, both bought and self-made. They're so great because you can dress them up or down and if the fabric is not too thin you can wear it in colder temperatures.
I am an American who rejects much of American attitudes towards fashion. I have a basic look that I accent, mostly with scarves, but also with jewelery. I am almost 55 and one of my challenges is my changing body.
Wendy Cooper I am in my 70’s so my body has already changed it’s shape..!! I can no longer wear a blouse tucked in to a skirt or jeans; in fact skirts no longer look good either... gone are the high heels, just flat shoes now. I still get compliments on my dress sense & style, but detest what the years do to the body....😰
I so enjoy Justine's videos. French style is much like the good quality advice mentioned in so many previous comments. I, too, was told by my mother only buy quality for your basic pieces. I do have all of the items Justine mentions, and then some. I also agree with the idea that we can buy the trendy piece that we know we will pass on or donate at some future point. I also love the term the Italians have, "Bella figura" and I hope I spelled that right!
I am 10. I own all of these. I can offer a tip on the scarves. Mine are made out of silk. They are light enough to be used in summer, yet warm enough to be used during most winters. Pick good quality heavier silk. I can also offer a tip on fabulous black stiletto shoes :) Pick those where your toes fit comfortably without being pinched and which have a good flexible foot support. Then you actually can walk in them :) Thank you for another great video! ♥
I love hearing about the French way. Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this subject. I am currently reorganizing my closet. Your French series and sustainable wardrobe videos have been super helpful. Thanks again Justine. I am looking forward to your next video!
I am a man but totally agree with your suggestions. Merci pour vos belles vidéos et pour nous aider tous, hommes et femmes, à nous sentir élégants. Avec amour de Los Angeles 🌈
I'm not French but I just realize my style has French influences. My husband is French and also I live in Quebec, so I follow this advise as my lifestyle. The only thing I need to update is not to be afraid of scarf as accessories and red lipstick! Merci!
Catching up with previous vlogs, all excellent! I must have been French in a previous life because I scored 10 out of 10. I will add that I started my retail career in high end softlines, so I received some terrific training which carried over into my adult years. I will buy a gently worn quality piece over a new "cheaper" item any day! Love your vlogs Justine!
It’s sad but true. I have my own 2 hand clothes in my closets (i.e. items I bought new years ago) and the quality is so much better than the new stuff.
I have eight of those things in my wardrobe. The only two missing are the turtleneck and the blazer because I live in Florida. My Mother was a model in Chicago in the 50’s and taught me well!
I did not know my fashion taste is actually more french. I like things simple and elegant. I always prefer basic colored clothes and if possible, no prints, but if there is, just minimal print that can go with anything I pair it with. And your shopping tips are what I’ve been practicing, though I just not buy something right away because of money, but it’s a good tip. It’s true, impulse purchase is bad.
I just found you, so happy I did. Thank you! I always felt that I was somewhat out of place with how I dress, but now I know that I just need to be in France :) I literary own all the basics you mention but the best part is when you said that you wear the button down shirts on the weekend as well!- That is so me. It made me so happy to just feel so understood. Thank you!
5:51 - you wait 24 hours and if you still want it you can go get it - I couldn't agree more about this! The first pair of Chanel flats I tried on had me swirling in "OMG I can't get those!" I left the store and thought about them the rest of the day and night - they were PERFECT! Next day I went back and bought them and have never looked back or felt foolish!
Justine, I just watch this video for the second time and in the future I'm always going to do a mental checklist that includes the things you mentioned at the end. Thanks for a great video. xox, Sue
I love your videos! Perhaps you could do a video on the Trench coat: short, mid, long, colors and quality? They are so French...and I live in a rainy climate in winter! Thanks so much, Miriam
🌷🌸🌷🌸🌷🌸🌷🌸🌷 I agree with the poster below Kathleen. Juliet, Your finely edited video is a joy to watch & why ? Because . . . You are healthy and it comes out thru your words, sparkling eyes, smiles, humor & cheery, uplifting demeanor. thank you so much for offering us this information to help Americans create a concentrated wardrobe of quality chic pieces that are usable 24 /7. Less is more fun. 🌷🌸🌷🌸🌷🌸🌷🌸🌷
Where I live, we have a lot of French tourists. I can spot French people right away because the way they dress. When they start speaking I laugh Inside because I was right ahah! The hair, the glasses, the comfy but chic style, the shoes… French people really have a great taste in fashion. Less is more and you don't look good if you don't feel good in your clothes. Love it.
hahaha I'm Russian, live in Berlin, but I own 9 of those things. The only thing I don't have is the stilettoes (I can only wear shoes with thick, stable heels- and I have those in black, too). :P
Loved this video, thank you! As I try to make all my cloths myself (even the cashmere knits) I opt for the highest possible quality, but it is a challenge to find high end fabrics and yarns for prices that are still reasonable. So while traveling I'm always looking for good opportunities and only enter the "cheaper" boutiques with my teen daughter.
enterprisebaby yesss!!! I just forego heels altogether, because I try to look good to impress myself not anyone else, so it doesn’t make sense to put myself in any discomfort
@@velveteenrabbit5804 Funniest thing ever to watch a woman stomping around in ridiculous heels because she thinks she looks sexy but is actually walking like she's got a couple of planks strapped to her feet.
Merci beaucoup! Thank you for adding minimalism/ecoresponsible tips as the 4 rules plus the environmental benefits of choosing dark jeans. Thank you for showing people choosing the mother Earth over fashion, and be as chic as possible :) You have a good heart, Justine

Some of these items are so unflattering on me that I have swapped them out; - Blue is my worst color, so I stick to black and grey denim. Blue throws of my entire color aura. - Black is my second worst color, so my t-shirts are all white and grey. - Pure ("crisp") white is also a bad color so I go for ivory (silk) shirts instead. Just as elegant, but much more flattering on me. - Dresses (except floor length) are not flattering on me, because my ankles are my least favourite body part, so I am saving up for well cut rock chic black velvet suit instead. - Turtlenecks makes my torso look even longer (and my legs even shoter) than they already is, so I stick to crewnecks. I think it is important to adjust the list to suit your body and coloring :)
If you do not suit blue, how do you imagine you will suit grey and black? Although there are warm greys, black and grey are generally cool colours just as blue is. Either blue does not look bad on you or your grey and black do too.
+shawna McComber (Pure) greys does not contain blue, which is the color I am "allergic" to. Greys somehow brings out the golden tones in my coloring (through contrast?) without making me look sickly (while navy makes me look like I have jaundice). Light and dark blues do nothing for me. And I did write that black was a bad color on me. It is too harsh against my coloring.
I'm obsessed with colour theory so although what you are saying does not make any sense to me, I will have to believe you that you know what works for you. ;-)
+Shawna McComber I am intrigued. Which part conflicts with color theory? Maybe it makes more sense when I say that my hair a very cool grey-ish blonde (with an almost green hue) at the roots, I have golden highligts and my skin is overall yellow, with some redness in certain areas? All I know is that black makes me look tired, pure white makes me look yellow, blue (esp. navy) makes my skin look very yellow, and greys (esp. medium to dark greys) makes my coloring look golden (but not yellow).
Well what I was trying to get at was that grey-when it is a mix of black and white-is a cool shade even if it doesn't have blue in it. And if blue is really not a good colour for you that would indicate you have warm colouring and thus grey would not be one of your best colours, just as you say pure white isn't and nor is black. But there are warm greys, they have a touch of yellow in them and look a bit greenish or more like taupe so perhaps those are the greys you are finding work for you. Generally the most important thing to consider with your colouring is your skin, as it is what reacts to colours that you wear. Your natural colour goes perfectly with your skin but certainly many woman end up with a dyed colour that is not the best choice and even salons make errors in this. It's a bit tricky because skin has overtone and undertone so you may have a yellow looking overtone but still have skin that looks best with cool colours. Your saying blue, black and pure white are not good for you makes me think you are not your best in cool colours. I wear warm colours best and it took me awhile to find the right blue. It exists but it's not always the blue that's in the shops so I wear very little blue. Black and white don't do me any favours either. I study colour theory as an artist but am also fascinated with it for personal colouring. There are many companies selling a system and I have too many opinions and thoughts on those to write about here LOL It's certainly a start to get a sense of whether you suit warm or cool colours best but there are more dimensions to colour than just temperature and there are degrees of warmth and coolness too. Other factors to consider are if the colours are bright or muted, dark or light. The theory behind personal colour systems is that we look best wearing colours that have the same properties as our own personal colouring. All of the internet sources for Parisian chic suggest neutrals and the black, white, grey and blush combo is very popular but if you are warm toned, you'd be better to consider camel, khaki, olive, cream and cognac as neutrals. Many women just choose black with the belief that it is elegant on everyone but I would argue that it isn't. Still, it's always a personal choice. :-)
Oh and that ring too. I’m totally French chic with a bit of Italian jazz thrown in, I already own all of those pieces but have really struggled to find perfect plain T shirts in my shape/style although just found an organic cotton small company based in Edinburgh and they’re great!

Gotta have a good basic wardrobe
It was an investment piece so ❤ 💯
I love love love that you don’t jabber on for 5 min and get right to the point with your vids!
That's exactly what I love love love about Justine's videos as well.
Same thought! 💕
Me too
Correct! You're very eloquent Justine!
Fangoddess better over dressed than under is what I say!
Jocelyn Ortiz 100% 🙌🏻
Fangoddess I'm an American and people often think I'm overdressed. It seems just because I don't wear oversized t-shirts nor go around showing too much skin when others do. The other day a co-worker said my style was "very simple". I took it as a compliment though I'm not so sure she meant it that way (as her style is no where near simple).
hoi:)
I’m a black woman from the US and just realized I have been French most of my adult life . Minimum makeup , basic quality pieces that fit well(timeless) , SOOOO much skincare lol ( even my 11/8 year old girls have a simple skin routine ) etc . I thank my mom for these instructions
Beauty in simplicity.
That also makes you a minimalist - congratulations, you're checking off all the right boxes! :-)
Great mom!
I am English born of Irish parents. However, I'm am as French as Cognac :)
I bet you and your daughters are absolutely gorgeous. Simplicity is beautiful!
I definitely love the tip, "Sleep on it." Do you still want it the next day? If so, then get it. This tip has worked for me for years and years!
Jane Archer ...yes, scarves are the best Accessoires ever 👍
@@janearcher3834 That's because of the metro. It's windy down there and you'll get ill if you don't wear a scarf
@@alyssia7239 Hmmmm, I thought you got sick because of exposure to bacteria or viruses.
Good job.
+Barbara Tomorowitz wow. So many compliments in one comment. Thanks!
Barbara Tomorowitz I agree. She's got class. I love all her videos, so inspiring and helpful.
Yes. I have a permanent love affair with the French and this video exemplifies everything the French are.
Love your comment. I m 45 and decide to build my capsule wardrobe this summer. ( 💓 from Hong Kong)
Love the self awareness, It's taking me some time too and the ideas you presented sound great.
@@lorifritzsche5371 most Frenchwoman aren't tall.
@@lorifritzsche5371. First step of fashion, is to properly and healthy eat
@@ThePlataf You're right, since the average height for French women is about 5'5" (165 cm.) The average female model height is 5'9" (175 cm), which most of would consider tall. For me, anything over 5'4" (163 cm) looks tall.
@@iparipaitegianiparipaitegi4643 You're right. That's what gives me my beautiful skin and shiny hair. The body shape is pure heredity.
Sometimes you just have to buy quality fabric, good thread and make your own. Its often the case.
OcchioniApotropaici I agree. So many things are disposable these days. I don't want more clothes, I want good quality pieces.
op shops. Hunt for gold.
Shop second hand. You can find higher end items in consignment shops, eBay, the Real Real, etc.
Check for fabrics
I am loving your "French Series"! Please add more. I especially like your funny commentaries about the French fashionista mindset.
+Kieu-Linh Caroline Valverde in that mindset, there is a lot of logics but also some contradictions and some clichés. I think it's fine to smile about all that 😉 Thanks for the kind words.
You offer such useful, practical advice, Justine. You do it in such a warm, lovely way. Thank you for what you offer in these videos.
Happy to say that I have:
- White shirt
- Tailored blazer
- Ballerinas or loafers
- (Little) black dress
- Pair or dark blue jeans
- Huge scarf
- Purse where everything fits
- Back and pointy high heels
I am still searching for:
- Perfect T-Shirt ( Like Justine, I am very tall with a long torso)
- Turtleneck sweater in a cosy fabric
Ohh this is gonna be a wonderful series! No nonsense, no age restriction, just good logic & style.💕
I love love love Justine's posts. The BEST fashion advice for those who want to evoke timeless style. Fads and trends come and go but this is the real deal. Follow her advice to look confident and feel fantastic at any age.
+Angela Butler that's sweet, thank you!
I agree I also love that you don't blab on and on and that get on with the topic promptly and pleasantly.
You can be very very thin and be wearing the exactly appropriate dress but if you speak unkindly to others the way you look doesn't mean anything!
Только страшная))).
People should dress howeber they wish… im french, i dont dress like her. French people can ne bully like if you dont dress like she describe. And it is not what i call polite. I dont like how she generalises . Not all french women dress or act the same way. For me it is too gimmicky.
I have watched this over & over...always take away something new. Justine you pack loads of tips in one segment!!! Amazing!!! Thank you❤
Please do a series on older women clothing styles, hair styles all age appropriate. Thx! I love your videos! My new favorite channel!!!!

She's too young. How would she know?
I too will like to see styles for age 40+ 🎈 👗 👠 👒 👍
Yes Justine! Please do a vid on women’s style for us 50 years plus of age 😘
Grancie E yes! Please! So many styles currently have only the young in mind.
my jeans are ancient and have faded to pale.
they were dark.
Best wardrobe advice out here-straight forward and unpretentious! Thank you!🙋🏾♀️
My mom always called me 'frenchie' and until watching your videos I never fully grasped her reference to the French way of life until stumbling upon your channel. I simply adore you! Your content is incredibly useful💚thank you
All great rules. Especially the "should last 10-20 years and 50 washings." Except for high heels, which are grotesque torture devices that only a podiatrist could love.
High heels are the most important of all the rules. Sorry for you.
I agree .
Agree with John Doe.
@@fan2jnrc one needs to be comfortable, if heels work, fine, if not, that's ok too
Heels have come a long way. You can find high heels that don’t hurt, but you must spend time and scrutiny in looking.
3 online brands that have good quality items, but also environmentally friendly and ethical brands are:
People Tree, Grüne Erde and Hessnatur.
I usually buy Max Mara and Marina Rinaldi, started at the age of 23 or 24 in Rome and continue today in Berlin and I am 76.
U.s. here. New clothing on the racks in stores look ready for the dust bin. Will check out product suggestions here
Marina Rinaldi, yes! Timeless!
unfortunately it's often the case that fast fashion is the only thing available.
I am Italian, I have all these iconic pieces! 😍 My motto is: combine quality with style. Kiss from Italy 💋 I follow you with pleasure
Italian women have such wonderful style, such Bella figura!
Un petit truc: "clear jeans" veut dire jeans transparents. Le mot qui traduit "clair" c'est "light".
Oh, thanks! I wasn't sure what "clear jeans" were. Turned on the subtitles to see if I misheard.
Thank you! I was completely baffled by "clear jeans"
Merci, pour ça.
Ohhh thanks , I was not sure if clear jeans was a fashion name or something lol, thank you!
Laura Gray..merci pour la traduction ◇
As well, there is the possibility that the item will be gone. I know this!
That lipstick was MADE for you! Your eyes pop! It goes great with your skin and hair color!
Straight to the point - how refreshing
That was very helpful!
Love your channel with solid, interesting advise presented in warm manner. I am 72 years old & am enjoying it immensely!
I like how you're not snobby, like so many of the fashion content creators, who aren't even designers or models.
Justine, I love your videos, you know your profession well! Would like to see some videos for senior women as we still like to dress up and want to look our best. Thanks!
Wait a day to buy it is a very good advise. Sometimes just a stop for a coffee will work!!
+ROSANA COSTES hahaha true!! It's just about stopping the "itch" before it makes you pull your wallet out of your bag 😁
I like your videos that are not only practical, informative but also consider the environment impact in our choices. Good work!
Justine, maybe you should make a video about caps and hats, it is a rarely mentioned topic. What do you think? 😊
I've been dying for a vid like that and I haven't really found any yet. xx, SS
Les bérets bien sure!👩🏾🎨

In English, "clear" = transparent (so another good reason for not wearing clear jeans lol!) "Light" colors are the opposite of dark.
+Ava Britt hmm... Thanks for the hint!!! 😥😌
I would love to see a French women dress for work video! :)
You just saw it. Those clothes (except the blue jeans) are what French women wear to go to work.
This was fun! A makeup version of this would be awesome!
It is so important to have your own essential pieces so you always feel stylish and it make getting dressed so much easier. I don't wear blazers but I have a great black jacket that I love and other equivalent pieces. Cheers!
I am French!!! In my heart, anyway. I am very French in my closet. Excellent to know your thoughts and see examples in a list. Love it.
I love your videos justine , I am in this phase of being so messy I don't know what fits me and what is my style and your series helps me a lot
I am 100 percent Italian but I think and act like a French woman!!! I’m soooo happy I found your videos!! Love it💕
Well, I just discovered I’m a French girl and I didn’t know it . You just describe my style 😁✌🏻
Are you ten years old??

I am a man but totally agree with your suggestions.
Merci pour vos belles vidéos et pour nous aider tous, hommes et femmes, à nous sentir élégants.

Thanks!
Second-hand high-quality is by far better than new shmutz...
Marie DeLozier lol what’s a shmutz? I know what a schvantz is, but never heard shmutz!
That's what I do .
yiddish?
It’s sad but true. I have my own 2 hand clothes in my closets (i.e. items I bought new years ago) and the quality is so much better than the new stuff.
I’m still wearing my Gucci, laboutin, and other high end designer shoes I bought in the nineties.
It’s true, impulse purchase is bad.
such a great video! I just realized I'm really french style-wise - without knowing it!
little Raspberry same here😛. Im like 10/10on d scale😜
Thank you!
Merci infiniment Justine! Vous êtes magnifique!!! C'est un style minimaliste et parfait!
Many thanks.Good fashion and good taste are international. Never knew I was dressing frenchy, I thought it was more following the italien way.
Thanks for a great video. xox, Sue
yay!!! my closet is beautifully French! I'm so happy, this makes my day, truly ;)

I love your videos! Perhaps you could do a video on the Trench coat: short, mid, long, colors and quality? They are so French...and I live in a rainy climate in winter! Thanks so much, Miriam
What you spoke about is exactly how I shop and I how I like to dress. I like this....

I agree with the poster below Kathleen.

I'm really loving this French series, it is helping me learn about the culture as well. Great work!!
I really really love how you talk and explain things
Can you make a video on different ways to tie a scarf? Or perhaps just your favorite way since there are so many "how to tie a scarf" videos?
Great video! American women REALLY need this fashion advice!!!
+Daria Sukharchuk given the sidewalks in Berlin, it is safer not to wear stilettos anyway 😉
High heels in Berlin is like a dream
Loved this video, thank you! As I try to make all my cloths myself (even the cashmere knits) I opt for the highest possible quality, but it is a challenge to find high end fabrics and yarns for prices that are still reasonable. So while traveling I'm always
looking for good opportunities and only enter the "cheaper" boutiques with my teen daughter.
+Eva Hoepelman making your own clothes is no doubt the best possible solution to always know where everything comes from 👏
do French women like accessories? please do a vid about this...
I will look a lot worse if I wear pointy, stiletto heels that hurt. Comfort shows in your face. Black heels, absolutely. Ones that hurt my feet, no.
enterprisebaby yesss!!! I just forego heels altogether, because I try to look good to impress myself not anyone else, so it doesn’t make sense to put myself in any discomfort
Its Not only the pain that shows in your face. Many women just can't walk in heels
Justine vos vidéos sont formidables et merci pour vos conseils "Ecolos" et "Econos" nous avons besoins de créateurs conscients comme vous. Je vous adore Justine
I just realized my Style is french even though I never tried 😁👧
+Stella R. Hahaha 😁
me too!!!
me too!
Some of these items are so unflattering on me that I have swapped them out;
- Blue is my worst color, so I stick to black and grey denim.
9 out of 10 - just can't do the shoes for medical reasons :( Love how they look and wish I could!!
Oh and that ring too. I’m totally French chic with a bit of Italian jazz thrown in, I already own all of those pieces but have really struggled to find perfect plain T shirts in my shape/style although just found an organic cotton small company based in Edinburgh and they’re great!
There are no words to discribe how much I love you and your work! You are really pretty, stylish, smart and I really love your accent. Girl, you rock!
