  • A school led by ‘Britain’s strictest teacher' Katharine Birbalsingh is being challenged in the High Court over a policy allegedly amounting to a "prayer ban".
Michaela School in Brent, north London, introduced a policy in March 2023 "banning prayer rituals" and a Muslim student at the school told the High Court on Tuesday the policy is discriminatory.
The court also heard that the school has faced an online campaign over its approach to religion, as well as threats of violence, abuse and false allegations of Islamophobia.
The Talk Panel discuss the controversy surrounding the "prayer ban" and how religion should fit into the British school system.

Or better still, outlaw faith based school, outlaw religious ceremonies in school, promote secular values and try to achieve a semblance of integration in British society rather than the continued separation of “communities” and the atomisation of British society.

When did we ever have a problem with a Catholic school, a Church of England school or a Jewish school? Why should they be closed down because another faith is causing problems? What might we close down next in order to stem this particular tide? Pubs - because Islam forbids the consumption of alcohol? Kennels and owning dogs as pets because they're also haram? I try to be honest. If I choose to pray, it’s probably not going to be in the street, outside an abortion clinic and for the camera. If I were to do those things for the general or specific harassment of others going about their lawful business, I might not be so quick to describe what I was doing as prayer. The greatest commandment, which is in iteration of the philosophical golden rule is to love our neighbour as ourself. Prayer as an instrument for the vilification, harassment or unwarranted interference with others who may be vulnerable or troubled in any event, does not fall within my own ideas of a bona fide conversation with God. What staggers me is the fundamental gullibility of those who believe any old crank in the street when they claim they are praying.

Batley Grammar School is a classic example of what happens when the governors of a school cave in to muslim pressure from a mob. Katharine is absolutely right, it's her school and she ,makes the rules. Shame that other school governing bodies don't have the same bottle. I've just watched a short TH-cam video showing a young british schoolboy being intimidated into becoming a muslim. Haven't noticed any outcry there.

I live in tbe part of NW London referred to here. It was a melting pot when I first moved here 35 years ago and still is, albeit a different kind of melting pot now. The school certainly serves some very deprived areas, although not as deprived as many in East or South London. That said, objectively it's not quite as "tough" as it's portrayed here. I have very nice Romanian and Polish neighbours who buy me presents at Christmas and Easter. I regularly walk past Katharine Birbalsingh's school at chucking-out time and the behaviour of its pupils is far better than it was at my extremely tough all-boys' grammar school 50 years ago. Katharine is 100% right in saying that multiculturalism requires sacrifices and right to ban prayers. I for one stand with her. What's significant is that there are other religious groups at this school. and others in the area, e.g. Hindus, Sikhs, Jews, Catholics, and they don't seem to have a problem with the restrictions on prayers. It strikes me that these groups are willing to make the kind of sacrifices that are necessary in what is an irrevocably diverse society. I hope that Katharine's approach is vindicated and that this action against her school doesn't succeed ; she is doing a great job for NW London's young people.

The student and parents are told there is no segregation for religion or race and student unity is their top value. If prayers at set times of the day are the top value of that family they do not have to go to that school. Why go to a school that is incompatible with your family’s values and then demand they change? That’s ridiculous.

Muslims have been in the UK for decades but it's only relatively recently that 'prayer rooms' have been a feature in any school or workplace. If they managed before why has it become a problem now? No parent is forced to apply to Katherine's school, so why have the parents of this child created a problem for themselves, the school and the other pupils? If their faith is the most important thing then they should have opted for a school that meets those needs.

The local Catholic school appeared to hold the community values I upheld. On pre-admittance interview, they were kind enough to accept my boys if they followed all the requisite religious practices of the school. Those religious practices were fundamentality the moral social & spiritual guidance that I wished to attain for my children. Of course I agreed. Both boys were so much happier there than they'd ever been. They decided not to become Catholic but took away with them an understanding & confidence of community values (instead of the dog eat dog 'diverse' state school attitudes that largely banned Christian customs in order not to offend).

You welcomed them in with naive open arms = too late realising it was the wrong thing to do now.

    School is for learning.
Religion and state need to be kept separate.

I never thought of England has a multicultural country growing up it was never called this and i never seen any evidence of this, it was just your indigenous British (English, Irish, Welsh, and scottish ancestry mix) with a tiny amount of ethnic minorities who you never really came into contact with apart from the corner shop who were mainly Arab people, this bombardment of multiculturalism and diversity we see and hear about now is a much more recent thing, then again i never grew up in London but even in London it's still only a recent thing over the last 60 years or so, London still had a 98% white population in 1961, now this diversity and multiculturalism is constantly drummed into us on a daily basis, now they want to make the whole country like London it seems.

The British Government need to take her approach. It's a school. Religion stays out. Utterly sick of these people threatening violence, to get there own way. She is NOT racist, she is right. A pupil is taking her to court. No her parents are and out to get her. She is some we need in government to stop this nonsense. They are not to take over. This is how they do.

Katherine Birbalsingh's approach is completely consistent with that of headmistresses in previous generations. Look smart, sit down, listen, don't interrupt, learn and receive the awards for doing so. Mess with that approach at the student and society's peril.

@@standardprocedure7017 There are C of E schools, Roman Catholic schools, Jewish schools, Islamic schools etc and secular schools and all must teach general education. Only a small part of that education should be based on Religion.

The reason faith schools work is the same reason Katherine Virgal Sing,s school works. Because there is no segregation.
The Muslim mother can take her child out of the school.
