Headteacher Katharine Birbalsingh Says School's Prayer Ban “Has Nothing To Do With Disliking Islam”

  • The headteacher of a school which is facing a legal challenge over its decision to ban prayer rituals has said “it has nothing to do with disliking Islam”.
Michaela Community School in Brent, north London, argues allowing such practices risks “undermining inclusion and social cohesion between pupils”, with its ban coming after a “vitriolic campaign of abuse, harassment and threats” against staff.
The high-achieving free school, previously dubbed Britain’s strictest, is facing a High Court legal challenge from a Muslim student who claims its approach to prayer on the premises is discriminatory and “uniquely” affects her faith due to its ritualised nature.
In her first broadcast interview since the legal challenge, headteacher Katharine Birbalsingh speaks to TalkTV’s Julia Hartley-Brewer to discuss the controversy.

Based on what she's said, she's got a fair argument under that she defines the school as secular and honestly it's about time a lawyer pushes the line "if we can have religious schools tailored to one religion, then equally we should be able to have secular schools which don't have to enable the practice of religion"
At the end of the day it's not all about religious groups, the UK has a growing non religious community who are tired of their children's learning being impacted through the actions of extremist followers within religious groups. As an adult, you don't get to stomp your feet and pout to get what you want, as the headmistress points out - they know what they signed up for, if they don't like it then maybe it's not the school for them.

In India, a year ago similar demand to allow burkha by Muslim female students within school premise was made into Religious Discrimination Issue by BBC and so many other western channels. Now that similar scenarios are being played out in Western Countries, the stance of media has changed. My presonal view, Katharine herself is probably a third generation of Sikh/Hindu origin migrant, she has adopted to British values and practices her ancestors beliefs outside the school premise. Then the specific group of parents should also be inspired to leave their religious practices outside the school gates.

Ms Birbalsingh is of Caribbean origin from both parents. Her father is from Guyana and in Guyana we are Hindus, Muslims, Christians etc and there is no religious animosity. And in the school system, it's the same way. Ms Birbalsingh 's school is like the normal Caribbean school where there are Hindu, Muslim and Christian who are not very conscious of religious difference. Old Birbalsingh was married to a Muslim and he was the father of Katherine's father; but then inter-faith marriages among Indians is usual since they think of themselves as a racial group and not a religious group. The kind of school KB is running resembles the usual Caribbean school.

Disagree. Those advocating allowing Islam to be practiced in this school are not wrong because of their religious convictions, they are wrong because this school is a secular school with excellent academic credentials that parents have presumably until now been quite happy to accept the ethos of because their kids are getting a damn good education. What we have here is just one more example of a clash of cultures which is now going to be settled in our courts. If this goes against the school I think its teachers should just all resign including the head and take their values elsewhere. They certainly shouldn’t just accept it and be forced to abandon their values. I think if they did this the political heat would switch to those causing all the damn fuss.

This is sad but is expected to happen in the UK. Currently a minority group is demanding total adherence to their religion. Non tolerance will always prevail. Wherever they are in minority they will demand their way due to their belief system: Dar al-Harb means 'house of war' and refers to the dominion of war around the world. Generally, it refers to any place that Islam cannot be practiced without persecution. It also refers to a country that is not under Islamic rule and is thus not amenable to the majority of its inhabitants practicing Islam.

It should be the same as in France. School and religion are totally separate. If you wish, have comparative discussion about religions but keep prayers out of it.
How would Muslims react if prayer rooms were also used by Christian or Hindu or other denominational children to pray? Would they complain that their place of worship was being defiled?

    • @Phylicity
      @Phylicity 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

School and religion should be separate. This may happen when William gets on the throne - he doesn’t want to have to attend church every week as the Royals have always done. The late Queen was a believer as is Charles apparently but William not so much. Now we are such a diverse country seems a good moment to weaken the ties between church and crown. Hope I’m still around when William is the King.

We need more Head Teachers like Katharine Birbalsingh.
I was saddened to hear that children are being intimidated to follow strict Islamic rules against their wishes and it clearly is not making a happy school environment. Interesting that when the school population was 30% muslim the school functioned well, when it reached 50% the cracks started to appear. Maybe certain Muslim families joined with the intention of changing the rules to suit themselves?
I hope common sense prevails and the judgement goes in the school's favour. Isn't it shocking that these people are intimidating teachers and children!!

What an extremely eloquent, rational, balanced & all round fab woman Katharine Birbalsingh is, 5 stars. Its such a shame we dont have many more Michaela schools available for kids all over the UK ... however I doubt we would find many headteachers like Ms Birbalsingh to take the lead in such shuools. Its a national outrage what has happened to this school & its teachers & to be honest the way things are going I would not want my children going to any school where their are Muslim students, if this is what can possibly happen via just one Muslim student & her parents. So pleased you won the case, Im sure there would have been a national outcry if the courts had agreed to installing a mini mosque (Muslim prayer room is just another way of describing what a mosque/masjid is) in every school.

  • @debbiesdoughnuts8016

This doesn’t add up, one sided media! Most Muslim in this country are not white, so racist rant to the teacher doesn’t make sense. She didn’t mention who did that. Or from which community or religion they were. It’s all said without facts to tip ur judgement. She casually says she had to ban prayer in the yard without any logical reason. This would initiate more hate and bad feeling. She says they know what they signed up to but they used to be allowed to pray in yard. This allowance seems to be taken away from the kids as a retaliation to others behaviour. I could understand there isn’t room to pray inside but to deny them their right outside seems to escalate the problem.
