Understanding Basketweave - Laying Out a Basket Stamp on a Straight Line

- Here’s something different for you. Have you ever wondered how to stamp basketweave straight down a strap without running off either side?
It all comes down to the master angle. For this example I stamped a line and then dropped the image into some drafting software so that you can more easily see the relationship. If I want this particular basketweave stamp (a BK #2) to align perfectly along a line, that stamp needs to run 33° to that line. That’s the master angle. You can measure it with a protractor, but for most stamps you can get pretty close with the 30° side of a drugstore 30-60-90 drafting triangle.
The other factor at play is that I want the center of the rope to run through the center of the strap. Once I’ve determined the master angle, I can take a measure from the where the leg meets the index line to the centerline of the rope. In this case it’s 5.5mm. Now it’s a simple matter of determining the center of the strap, laying on my index line at -5.5mm and then applying that 33° degree angle.
The more you know.
Bonus points: If you own a 3D printer and have a little bit of drafting ability you can make a master angle jig for every basket stamp you own.
when the world needed him most he returned. big fan of your work man!
Been trying to learn this technique for quite some time. It helps alot! Thank you
Wow, you are the first one to really explain how to do this. I recently purchased a diode laser. I will attempt to make a jig for each of my basket stamps.
I found your channel by accident and glad I did.
Your belt video has inspired me to do better in my craftsmanship.
HowTo/Tutorials like this are so much better here. I know artists don't get as many "hits" here as Instagram, but this platform is made for learning and the other is just for show.
What a fantastic explanation of how to improve basket stamps. Wow, thanks for all the tips.
Ben is back on TH-cam! This was a pleasant surprise in my feed.
You almost sound like Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs lol. Thank you for a great tip for basket weave stamping, hopefully there will be many more in the future! looking forward to it
Thanks man, I’ve definitely been called worse!
@@BMGeisler not bad at all, the voice just sounded familiar lol

How do you find the master angle?
It’s in the video. On a piece of scrap, stamp a line of stamps however you can lay them the straightest and run a baseline off of that. Once you have a baseline, set your protractor on the baseline and use it to measure the angle of the basket leg. That’s the master angle.
I want to buy a belt, can’t find them
As a custom item, they aren't on my website. Send me an email at trailsendsaddleshop@gmail.com
