      You are so correct. I'm 73 and in great health (though I don't look 30 anymore). I move throughout the day (about 20 min. every hour). I lift weights 5 times a week and walk 5-6 miles every day. I've maintained a 14% body fat for the last decade and my doctor says I have the body and the blood work of a person 20 years my junior. Sitting is killing people. Thanks for your comment (and you do look 30).

      @@billpetersen298it can be hard when one is trained from very young nOt to cry and also often to pretend to feel fine even if we are not, so we don't learn to feel our feelings fully, or at all! Sometimes is called dissociation. My Mum dying, & later beloved dog opened the tear-gates for me. Watching dog-rescue videos online, or something that touches your heart, is a good way to begin, not too personal, if you have old traumas your heart & mind are safe-guarding. Crying can feel great, & awful, & sometimes overwhelming. Doesn't need to take long time either. Also tears are an efficient way for the body to excrete stress hormones 😊❤🤗

    Tough stuff. Aging quicker a.k.a decreasing a lifespan due to high insulin and glucose levels? Scary stuff. But it undoubtedly illuminates the horror of a developing disease in the body. The main takeaway, for me, is that humans have a tough time practicing maladaption to bad eating habits. Making new room towards a healthier life calls for psychological suffering. The other interesting tidbit on that is that this cuts into moral and personal spheres...how one merely values their time.
    Dr. David spoke of complacency in a humble way. But this obesity epidemic may not fall to the wayside until modern civilization crumbles. There's advertisements about dessert, sweet things, and how to spend personal time everywhere we go. The great majority or common folk are content with ease and minimal challenge.
    Great video. Nothing like some good ol' science.

    Alternative that worked for me. Push breakfast back 15 minutes each day as often as you can. Just keep trying, keep going, don’t give up and if you fail one day it’s not a big deal as long as you don’t give up. I eventually stopped feeling like I needed breakfast after maybe 6 months. The body is amazing at adapting.

    I’m about to turn 60 and have been training since my 20s with no break of note. 4-5 days a week in average with mostly strength and conditioning exercises like weights and kettlebells and body weight exercises. For the last 10 years I wake up after about 10-11 hours of no food and then work out on only a coffee or workout drink (stevia Celsius) and then eat after the gym. So naturally a 13-14 hour fast and NO ONE believes I’m out of my 40s and my body (though suffering a bit from extra water and not quite the same muscle mass mostly I assume from lowered testosterone ) has almost not changed in 30 years.

      @insight7483 thank you good points & helpful concisely summarised. Wanted to add please, via Dr Zach Bush, that a Blue Zone (forget which) a very significant thing was conscious & sociable eating, they would always set an extra place at the table and delighted to have guests, & they would ask next day 'who did you eat with?' rather than 'what did you eat?'
      Also preparing, seeing, smelling, anticipating the food, & gratitude for it, as well as leisurely eating & plenty chewing, all contribute to well-being. Sadhguru speaks of various advice for healthy eating , including never eat standing up, be 'empty' when go to sleep, don't drink liquid with food, something about a particular practise of having only 24 morsels/mouthfuls each chewed 24 times; eating 'alive'foods, not snacking ~ he eats once a day. The intermittent fasting approach seems to keep turning up as an essential component in some form. 🤐

    Thank you Andrew for drawing attention to the fact that it’s possible to change the usual course of aging.
    I want to share my cold water journey in case someone is on the fence about it. I’m 66, eat well, on no meds and I do cardio 3x weekly.
    However it was those challenging, crazy cold, energizing showers that turned me around and made me feel 30 years younger.
    I’m not exaggerating when I say that. I sleep more deeply, have more energy and mental clarity. Also I hardly ever turn my heater on anymore because I’ve developed a degree of cold resistance. So I’m saving money too.
    When I first listened to cold water enthusiasts on TH-cam I felt challenged because I’ve always hated being in cold water.
    But after listening to several people say they “Step out of the cold shower feeling like a god” I decided to try it.
    The only way I could do cold showers was to ease into it.
    After my usual warm shower, I turn the faucet to the midway lukewarm position for about 1 minute. Then I turn on the cold water all the way and start on my feet only and slowly work up allowing the cold water to cover me for 2 minutes.
    Cold water gurus encourage their followers to remain calm and breathe deeply throughout the process but I scream like a small child when that cold, mountain well water hits my torso.
    Even so the results are soooo worth it. Give cold showers (or baths or open waters) a try if your goal is to feel younger and more energized.

      My urogynecologist advises bio identical HRT for women. Beginning at around 40yrs to check hormone levels for a baseline level as a gauge, then watch them and take hormones once they dip esp low. Some women won't need bio hormones until their 50s, but others might need help in their 40s, it depends. Once the menstrual cycle is not regular, he says is usually when you want to consider something for sure...bio hormones or vaginal estrogen or both. Women suffer from fatigue, mood, sleep, bone density, and pelvic/sexual health issues when these hormones dip low, and once they have dipped and negative symptoms start it is hard to fix them and they cannot be fixed as well. You want to fix things before it gets bad, as a stitch in time saves nine.
      For example, women suffer increased UTI risk, vaginal irritation, pain with sex, vaginal infections, decreased bone density/ligament/tendon density, difficulty with orgasm and often decreased nerve sensation, and much greater vaginal prolapse risk once hormone levels are allowed to fall. A functional medicine doctor or doc that does bio identical hormones is a good place to start. I also know women that took bio hormones and said that their levels of fatigue changed dramatically and they had so much energy again. I don't know why women should suffer if men find similar issues unacceptable why it is ok for women to just grin and bear feeling miserable!

    But I made the mistake of abandoning cardio when I embraced weight training. I knew it was not terribly useful in fat loss, so why do it. Well, I recently learned what I should have known: use it or lose it.
    Recovering from Covid in early January, I tried to walk outside on those rare sunny days (in N. IL), only to find that 1/3 mile was my current max! Humiliation! I could not walk a dog if I wanted to get one!

    I'm 55 and have been doing the same rituals this guy is doing in the last couple of months now. I also walk and trying some muscle workouts. My body weight has decreased to a better weight now. Before I was getting heavier. I too eat a little yogurt with olive oil and sometimes a light broth with nutritional yeast and olive oil. Extra virgin. So I can take my supplements. I eat a pretty good lunch and very little but some fruit or soup later. Other days. I eat a bigger breakfast, simple salad at lunch and no dinner except maybe a few nuts.

    Can you dive into the differences in intermittent fasting for women vs men? Research indicates IF may not be as beneficial for women, particularly when it comes to reproductive health/hormones, bone density and sleep. Women tend to preserve fat during scarcity. We need pertinent info on aging for women too. I'm a health provider and notice when female patients switch to IF, eventually many develop insomnia and hormonal disruptions. Some also gain weight. Most improve when they switch back to 3 meals a day. However, I don't have a perspective on longevity outcomes.

    Wouldn’t being fat or being obese would put the body in stress. Aside from the science behind it, it literally is harder to do anything when you have more fat encompassing every organ in your body. Plus those who are overweight have a weaker will power, so they would be eating a lot more and constantly digesting not allowing the body to recover and rejuvenate on a cellular level

    My grandfather began fasting & water diets around middle-age. And although he wasn’t athletically-built he walked everyday & everywhere, as he didn’t own a car. He began to experience memory-loss in his early 60s and full Alzheimer’s by his late 60s, and died around 75. The point is that his evidently healthy habits was no match for his genetic makeup. BTW, he was fluent in 3 languages, read Yiddish newspapers daily and ran a multi-million $ clothing factory for many years. So he wasn’t wasting his mind in front of a TV (which he never owned). Unfortunately you can’t beat genetics, regardless of your healthy habits.

    Grateful for this depth of health advice, and the perspective from a research scientist. Optimizing health is the best insurance policy for a good life. Just one thing though - I think we need to can the war on aging. Aging is what happens when you live a normal life. The language that equates aging with disease is dehumanizing us. Aging healthfully is a fabulous goal. But we can't transcend our human imperative to live, and eventually die. That's the deal for earthlings.

    • @questioneverything1776

      Agree. Chasing spent youth for some ppl seems to negatively impact their mental health and decrease quality of life. Live healthfully but enjoy life and don’t obsess about every little thing you put into your mouth or do to your body. Going to extremes is not the answer. We actually seem to be living in an era of extremism. Being “thin” at the expense of mental health. Being “young” at the expense of mental health. Mental AND physical well-being is important.

      @jercasgav 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Why? I disagree. I think in a natural state we would age better then just keel over dead one day. I don't think we should suffer the disability of aging for decades in pain and misery then die. I don't want to live a super long life either, this earth is just a blip on the timeline of existence...but while here I want to feel my absolute best and be functional for as long as possible. I am a nurse and seeing the suffering of aging is unacceptable if we can ameliorate some of it. Most people have a way longer lifespan than health span...we need to increase the number of quality of years of living I think. I am certainly not concerned about living longer, but want us to live better while alive!!

    • @reanolan
      @reanolan 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@jercasgav Fair enough. On the point of improving health spans for the duration of life I agree 100%. I just don't like the term anti-aging, which literally means "against aging". I suppose that's why Attia calls his work longevity as opposed to anti-aging. As a lady once said several years ago, aging is a privilege not everyone gets, so we should celebrate life through our ages. And that includes optimizing health.

Little did I know that in 1.5 years I'd drop 45lbs and lose my gut along with a few other body areas. I feel like I got a"reset" from my fasting and going without meals. I also started Invisalign braces which is very strict with water only and I mention this because I clenched my jaws a lot during that time. It's 4 years since I did all this and I'm still as healthy as ever with a few minor health issues and I never take pain meds.
