    New video coming out very soon. Just got off the road on a 10-day trip - going to show what life on the road is like for a 135 charter pilot. The good, the bad the ugly, and everything that can go right and wrong on a trip. Not as much cockpit stuff (some folks won't like that as much) but really the "story of the job". Many folks want to know what 135 charter is like and are even considering making that the type of career for themselves, so a new video is headed your way. Let's see how it goes! Stay tuned.

      I watched it last night and I must say it was amazing. I actually work for American out of Tampa as a Marshaller. It's cool to see the corporate aspect of thing's. If your ever in the area ask for Brian. Well done once again!! What a great crew you have with you.

      Im a trucker so I always flipping switches during my inspection. Air bags, air brakes, air horn, air in my lungs, lol

      Thank you very much Eric. I really do try to treat everyone with respect. Part of the job of the PIC on a trip is to "set the tone", meaning leading by example. I truly do try to go out of my way to be calm, courteous and polite to everyone. But I do have my off days as well. LOL

      we are on a hiring freeze right now honestly. Times are strange everywhere. And for us (like many company's like ours), it truly has nothing to do with "time". In fact, as long as someone can meet insurance / part 135 requirements, then we will take a very serious look at them. The major thing with us is attitude. Doing what needs to be done (lots of outside of flying things) in order to make the overall trip a success. Like someone might have to go run to get catering across town . . . cleaning up the plane, truly caring about the customer experience, helping to "throw bags", thinking outside the box to make a trip happen. Being a person who is an amazing communicator and a great problem solver. Someone that the other pilot and FA doesnt want to MURDER after 8 days together (this is a biggie).
      Sad truth is, that most of the time, 121 guys dont fit that bill (which is fine). If someone wants to show up to work to "just fly" and then go home . . . they will be miserable in a situation like this. I've seen it time and time again.
      Now, if you meet these personality traits (we do a personality test for our group) then we would love to chat with you.

      My Brother in law went to a jet flight school in FLorida like for 40-grand. I thought he will never qualify and they are going to steal his money. He succeeded and was flying like passenger jets out of Hawaii. He said it was fun, the stewardesses were pretty and that his FAmily could fly FREE wherever the planes service was to and from. Now with taking off your shoes, having your glasses taken as deadly weapons, flying is just not as fun like in the 70s.

      Jerry...I found your video tonight and it truly inspired me. Like you, I decided to “bite the bullet” and change careers, although I did it much later than you. I got my PPL in 2015 at age 54. Yeah, I left my 35 year IT career two years ago and got my commercial ticket and AMEL. I bought a Cessna 182 in 2017 and flew all I could, a lot of volunteer flying for Pilot-n-Paws and Angel Flight West. Last December, I landed a job with ExpressJet Airlines flying United Express. Got my ATP exam done on March 2, then started ground on March 16, 2020 on the EMB-145. On the day I completed my last ground school class, April 30th, I got furloughed. It truly hurts being this close to my dream and hitting the brakes. I really don’t care if I fly 121 or 135 as long as I’m doing what I love. I appreciate your video so much because it gives me hope. I’m not sure what your companies minimums are but I’d like to find out. I’m sure they are much higher than what Part 121 requires. I know that the clock is ticking for me in the 121 world but I was hoping I’d get enough 121 time to prepare myself for the 135 corporate world. Any advice you can provide I’d greatly appreciate.

      ijzerkoekie - correction...I was 57 when I got my commercial ticket and flew for super small companies for work (poverty level) but I didn’t get hired at the airlines until I was 59. Yeah...there “was” hope but I’m not sure what my chances are now. I’m working on my CFI/CFII now and applied for an Part 135 Operator Certificate for my own plane. We’ll see what happens.

    This is an awesome video!! My brother is a pilot. What started it for him....he watched Top Gun. And the rest was history. It's expensive and initially, the pay starting out isn't usually very much. So, you definitely don't want a pilot going in half-assed and with a bad attitude about it. I'm extremely proud of him and tip my hat to anyone who has the will and determination to learn how to fly!!

      I use to fly the 145 . . . exactly same except 1) no windshield wipers 2) we have a FUS tank switch. Oh, and if you 145's were like ours were, these business aircraft are so much cleaner up front (well, and in the back). That was one of the biggest things I noticed when moving to it. So stinking clean!!!! I felt like I was flying a brand new plane. LOL

    Enjoyed the video! Flew the airliner version for three years. What a great airplane. The pax always complained but man was it fun to fly. 250 to the marker and still stabilized at 1000. Good times.

      NICE!!! The biggest difference with this and the airliner - this one does not like to slow down. Biggest thing to get use to, its "slick" . . . oh and it will get to 410 really fast!

      @@jerrywhite2390 That's awesome. We had some of the old EP models at ExpressJet. I've actually flown ERJ145 serial #3. Those EP's would struggle to get to the low 30's in the summer at 500 fpm. Haha. The XR's and -135's were a lot of fun though!

    I think flying is the most terrifying experience imaginable. But I watch these types of videos to see how routine flying is for flight crews. The calm and routine way y'all approach your jobs helps me feel just a tiny bit less terrified when I'm in an airplane. I appreciate folks like yourself taking the time to post videos of this type.

      It's much safer than driving, based on miles traveled. How many people die in car accidents every year 30,000 +.
      Being a pilot is not for everyone. They take their jobs very seriously and the physical, mental, knowledge, and experience requirements are very controlled.

      First of all, thank you for the posting. 2nd, thank you for being honest about your fears. Yes, it is very routine and actually very scripted in many ways. Also know that every single pilot that flies you on an airliner or in a "professional" way is highly, highly trained. Just to get a "type certificate" for each type of jet one flies is hours and hours and hours of very real life emergency test. And just"not crashing" when the engine catches fire is not good enough. You must still show that you can fly when the Poop has hit the fan in a very precise and technical manner. And we do this type of training 2 times a year. There is a reason that millions and millions of people fly every day and there is no loss of life or daily accidents. It is much more dangerous to to die going to the airport, than actually dying in the plane.

    Informative video. Nice seeing the behind the scene preliminary work. Glad you are so thorough. As a passenger I always worry a little bit if the pilot is having a bad day, is rushed, or tired, and bypasses some of the checks or ignores weather reports. It’s nice to see diligence in mundane tasks that are overkill 98% of the time (and may kill the other 2%).

    I'm not sure if you know this trick or not, but when initially powering on the jet, when the Caution keeps going off every 2 seconds for a new situation, pushing and holding the Full/WX, then pressing the Master Caution while still holding the Full/WX button will mute the "ding" noise, but will still keep the EICAS messages flashing on the screen. Just a little trick we used on the 145. Keep me in mind if you guys start hiring again down the road please! My airline unfortunately went under due to Covid, but I'd be appreciative of information for the company you work for! Nice video. This definitely makes me miss flying. It's been about 4 weeks for me now.

    This was really cool to watch! I work for Statesville Fire Department and the ground crew that guided you in is the captain at my station the shift after me.       Big plane, yes as I flew Dash-8 before the Legacy.
      I gave up my command on the Legacy for a FO position on the Lineage (Dubai based).

    Trick of the trade: if you push the steering disengage button plus the master caution button at the same time it disables the incessant chiming.

There are only a few brief vedios on the internet and i am really happy that i found one. I am hoping to be a pilot like you one day.and hope my dreams come true

    Thanks for sharing this very informative video Jerry. All of these years I knew what you did, but now after having come along and watched up close for a day, I have a new-found appreciation. Until I read this, I was not aware that you just undertook this career change to become a pilot in 2007. You are truly a multi-talented professional. I have never pursued pilot training, but I could relate to all of the ATC communications chatter and all of the 3-letter acronyms for navigation, flight control and such from my days in the Air Force. You run a very professional and tight ship. Thanks again for sharing your day with us. Hugs from a friend and brother.

    I'm 42, been in IT since I was 17. I love it but they don't like for you to think outside the box and show that you care about the customer more than software rollouts. Working on my PPL and now you have me considering a complete career change. Love to help people and solve problems and honestly running to get clients drycleaning and food doesn't sound that bad to me. Beats sitting in a server room.

    Having to flight plan on one’s own time stinks. Having a dispatch to complete the bulk of the work is certainly reduces the workload.
    What young aspiring aviators don’t realize is how many different flying jobs exist for pilots.
    Private, modified corporate, true corporate, fractional, airline, freight, federal govt, state/county/local govt, NGO and don’t forget it’s in rotors and planes too.

      yes, that is so true.. . there are so many different jobs out there. Having a dispatcher is very nice, but once you get use to doing the flight plans, it really doesnt take very long at all.. most of the time we are doing then on the way to the airport in the rental car. LOL

    Great "day in the life" (or 24 hours in the life) video! Being over 60, a career change isn't in the cards for me, but I shared this video on my Facebook page for my younger friends who might be interested in an aviation career to see. I have a lot of friends who were students in Army ROTC programs where I worked, and some of them are approaching the age you were at when you made the leap. I read your blog that seemed to take you through the private pilot phase, and it kind of stopped there; how many hours did you have when you got the regional airline job, and how many hours did you have when you got your corporate job?

      Airlines (which I have been as well) = bus driving. Corporate (at least some) = limo driving.

    Watched the WHOLE video today fed to me by YT Gods. AWESOME ! thank you . Flew corporate once in 1997 to a hunting camp out of Sugarland. In 2020 never realized so much of the Avionics was still manual. Crazy that weather updates are pen and paper ? Never understood the complexity. So in 2020 our Macs power up and self check, our cars do the same, why do Aircraft not do it and just alert you to automated checks that throw up errors..?

      such a good point. the issue is that the avionics need to be approved when the plane is being designed, so often times you are dealing with 10 year or so technology when the plane is NEW! Then add the fact that this plane is nearly 10 years old, and there ya go! But the plane does do a lot of "auto checks" and the such.

      If you want something bad enough you'll find a way- get a loan, have you looked at flight schools over seas that are a fraction of the cost

    I am encouraged to see you using Crew Resource Management (CRM). The tasks of flying a jet aircraft are so many and so complex, that it is a wonder that some of them can be flown by a single pilot. There is no room for human error.

I love watching videos like yours to see what a day might look like. It’s a big decision for me as I’m young and married but it will provide for a family much better than a CFI gig. Thanks again!

      Very nice, the 135 world needs lots of pilots right now! It's a great time to be a pilot (as you know). For a family, often times the 135 can give you a little better QOL (at least at first) vs the airlines. My 135 closed, and we all ended up on the street - thus, I needed to get a job at the airlines.

    I was a corporate Piot for a number of years for a big company in Australia. Our Aircraft was not as good as what is pictured here but fit for the job anyway.
    I normally flew between capital cities and smaller country areas .
    Part of my job was to take valuable clients (ie supermarket execs for instance) away for a few days up to the coastal islands off the Queensland coast. I normally got to stay with them so it was a perk of the job.
    I travelled all over the country and absolutely loved the job, much better than working for a living. The downside ? it could be a seven day a week job, sometimes away from home day after day,
    lucky I had a great wife.
    Then it all fell apart, I started to lose my hearing and now wear two hearing aids so I will never get my licence back. I'm too old now anyway.
    But yes, what a great life it was as any pilot woll tell you

      Wear earplugs and ear muffs..... double protection against jet engine/APU noise. There aren't many jobs for deaf pilots...... (retired heavy jet pilot)

    About the time this video was released I was working at the embraer facility in Melbourne on the new legacy line doing interior repair. It’s crazy to see the newer models and how far they came vs the older models.
