When Pallante has command , hes good. Keep throwing him out there. He may end up being higher than a number five. As far as trades, the guy I would like to see traded is not going to happen this year , so theres no sense in naming him. Maybe next year , when le loses trade value.
We need bullpen help before we need yet another #5 starter. When our starters make a quality start, they deserve to get the win, not have middle relief allow the other team to tie the game or go ahead, and turn that win into a no-decision. Puts more pressure on the hitters, too.
StL actually cannot do a bullpen game, because after the top 3 late innings guys out there, we can't get 9 good enough innings to win a game.
Absolutely NO on the TB trade idea. The guy has a .218 batting average?!! C'MON!!!!! Maybe that deal will look better in the off-season, but not now.
I want to tell you like your show... but GRAY IS NOT an ACE! He's not invited to the All-Star game he's NOT an ace! The Cardinals need an ACE and Trevor Bauer is just sitting there. You really should be doing a show on how NO CARDINALS but a RP are all-stars. The industry doesn't think much of our players. The Cardinals aren't trying to win a World Series otherwise they'd got sign Bauer and make a big move for Trout or a super-star outfielder. I bet the Cardinals could get trout for a couple of our major league roster outfielders and taking back half his payroll. Trout is getting traded bank on that.
Noot and Tommy can be the bats we r looking for. Pitching pitching and more pitching.
It would also help if Paul and Nolan A would hit better.
Why wouldn't the Cards go get an impact bat instead of low hanging fruit? We used to get a Scott Rolen, Holliday or even Larry Walker. True difference makers. At some point the Cards have to decide if they really want to compete with the best. Little tweaks aren't moving the needle for this team. Trade some top prospects, go for it. Trying to hobble in as a WC team shouldn't excite fans that used to expect being an elite team.
I think the Cardinals need a rh bat to sometimes DH. At the very least why not send Fermin who is batting around 130 and bring up Baker. Now I don't think Baker will hit for average but he might walk into a few pitches for homeruns.
I also would rather see the cardinals get a couple of good relievers especially one that could occasionally close games when Helsley is not a available. This team already have a couple of internal options for the #5 starter spot.

@boschlosser10 walker has a barely 700 ops at triple A they shouldn't bring him up for the rest of the year unless he just goes insane and edman you don't know how he's gonna play he's hasn't seen the field in a long time
We need another ace Pallante is good enough to be a starter if he continues to give us 6 or 7 innings same thing with Lynn 6-7 innings then the bullpen has to step up which they shown signs
I love both Arenado and Goldy, they're two players that I always hoped the Cardinals would target, and I loved it when they landed them. Right now, given they're both looking at back to back slump years, I feel like the right move is definitely to at least trade Goldy -- there is probably going to be a contending team that is confident they can help him fix their swing and give up a decent prospect in return. We have Burleson ready to slot in to 1B. And honestly, if the right offer is there for Arenado...
It just feels awful saying we should consider letting two such greats go, but it really does feel like the better move right now. We need to move past this era where none of our young players are growing because most of them can't get consistent playing time (or position), and if the vets aren't getting the job done, then why keep letting them be blockers. If it was a 1 year slump, that would be one thing -- but let's be real here, the slump really goes back to the last 8 weeks of 2022. It felt like as soon as the machine hit #700, the team lost all of its steam. No one was hitting the last month and a half and Waino's 2023 woes were on display for all of August 2022.

JD, we still need good pitching coaches and good hitting coaches. We obviously don't have coaches that can develop hitters and pitchers. We need them desperately.
Unless Arenado is injured and they're not telling us, a good hitting coach could help him figure it out and totally turn it around. Same for Goldy!!
Is Skip Schumacher waiting in the wings JD? I certainly hope so. That might be another topic for your next program or the one after that.
I think we may have to accept it's just not a coaching thing especially with goldy he's old and seems to be slowing down especially with some of our young guys figuring it out like Burleson I think if it was a coach problem everyone would be struggling
Edman and Burly are the best outfielders you can have.
How can you say that when edman hasn't played all year we don't know how he's gonna look he could play terrible after being off for so long burly has actually proved himself this year they're not in the same category
Kudos to Pallante for his improvements. However, historically he has not been reliable. Go get a proven pitcher- hopefully one with post season experience.
Curt Bishop's articles are generally panned on VEB, and he's a pretty young writer, but I guess that trade could be the basis for a move. Like you, JD, I wouldn't make it straight up.

You can never have enough pitching so the Cardinals should thoroughly examine the trade market for both starters and bullpen pieces. With the team having offensive struggles they have played a lot of close games which means a lot of high leverage innings for the entire pitching staff, adding guys that have the ability to chew innings would be a major add for the team.
If the team is able to make the playoffs, who are you comfortable running out as your playoff rotation right now? Gray, Gibson, Lynn (all added in the offseason) and then who? Pallante has been good in a short run recently, but he has also struggled. Mikolas has not been great this year. Matz is out with an injury right now and hasn't pitched great in his time with the Cardinals.
Whether it's someone for the front of the rotation or the back, the Cardinals need at least 1 more starter if they're going to be a legitimate playoff team.
They also need to upgrade the bench A LOT!!! The team has struggled offensively with several players underperforming, but the bench has been even less effective at the plate. Assuming Nootbar, Edman, and Walker all return to the roster and are able to perform at the level expected (not a guarantee by the way) the offense should improve, but injuries linger and it is not uncommon for guys to go back on the IL shortly after coming off.
The team's run differential is still deeply in the negative which means that they either win a close game or they get blown out by multiple runs, it would be nice if the team had an offense that could have a 4 or 5 run lead and then hold onto it a few times per week. You wouldn't have the same pressure on the pitching staff if the offense was able to put up crooked numbers more often.
Hey JD; PITCHING PITCHING PITCHING!! So your proposal makes some sense. Efflin is intriguing. I’m fine offering up Carlson, but Crawford could be helping Winn with his game more than we see or hear. That’s valuable and if true we see the evidence. As we all know….It all depends on what the Rays would want as well.
Pallante with that new runner in on the righties hopefully will help. He does have a good arm very durable. Why did the announcers say the the mistake by Bendan Donovan almost cost them the game?? That run means nothing.. you still have to get a hit lol. Can't wait for Noot with good plate disciplin and power. This offence can be better. I've said before, Herrera would be an excellent guy to work with defensively to give Goldy some days off at 1B. Ivan was providing decent offense, and is now probably #3 at the catcher position. He would be a much better backup at 1B than Baker, who is very weak defensively.
More starting pitching is always needed.

Edman is the best CF we have. He is also one of the best players on the team when healthy. He can also play almost every position if somebody gets hurt. Mo is an idiot if he deals Edman. It would be like another Arozarena or A. Garcia. He will be a star if he goes elsewhere
Let me remind you GRAY IS NOT AN ACE! Ace do not have two bad starts in row giving up 5 runs in a row. Any trades for pitching should focus on getting an ACE for the playoffs. Get MAX or bust. MAX could force his way to St. Louis. Then I would move Walker and someone else and get TROUT with half his salary paid by the Angles. THAT IS GOING FOR IT>
Agreed JD. Bullpen help is key. Also a starter would be nice. Once you get into playoffs if cards are able to make it. All you need are 3 horses for starters and a great bullpen.
I think sonny kyle Gibson and then you pick up a solid lefty starter at the deadline I'm not mad with that

We have inconsistency in the starting pitching staff built on short-term contracts, so I don't think Pallante has changed that condition, at least not yet. The Cardinals have overcome some of the inconsistency to this point of the season, but I really think the best thing to do by the trade deadline is bulk up on relief pitching. (and I'm not talking "rentals" heading to free agency, we need consistency in the bullpen, too) Address the starting pitching again during the off-season.
.... and .... Gallegos is too far gone to be effective for the Cardinals ANYWHERE.
Pitching is always and will always be a concern , the Cards are one starter going down away from scrambling to keep the rotation in order ,cant count on Devil Magic all the time, if there's a starter they can get get him.Go get Max ,the Rangers are 8 games under 500 and hes going to be available and what better place to have him go than home sweet home. Yesterday pallante pitched like a number 1 or 2. Obviously all his starts haven't been like like that, but the july 4th game definitely was. Would have been downright incredible if he didn't give up that homer
Add a #2 type starter. We need a very good 1 and 2 in playoffs. Have Pallante as a backup starter in case of injury. Draw from our AAA guys and Matz and Pallente as reinforcements for the pen. No need to add a bat.
This series was tough to watch, still very much believe the things they need most to look at the trade 1. 2 relief pitcheres probably right handed, 2. A #1-2 pitcher that they'll hopefully keep for 3+ years, 3. Something to strengthen their existing hitting if that means changing coaching in the off season or adding to it at some point to help improve overall performance anything would be nice. The big problem will be the #2 starter like you said recently, anything that good the bigger money teams like a Yanks, O's, Pillies or even Mets absolutely be willing to pay more to get them and they have options to leverage (more so than us) to be able to achieve that.
I think the way to go is trade goldy then move burley to first that opens up your outfield put noot in right then edman is your 4th outfielder hopefully we can dump carlson too
@@tylerbenlien6093 it'll be tough to find Any1 to pick up Goldy or Arenado just because of their performance this season. They'll have to use allot of farm prospects possibly even Jordan Walker and plenty of money for a #2 pitcher.
There isn’t a spot for Lowe to play though. Especially when Edman and noot are healthy. I feel like we’d need a right handed hitting outfielder for it to make sense

Mo will look to add a low to mid tier bat like Rooker or a Timothy Ward type bat. Same with pitching a low to mid tier pitcher like Kikuchi, or Andersen from the Angels. The bullpen needs some help I like the Cronin kid from the Marlins he shouldn't have a high price tag. Don't expect anything more than this and you won't be disappointed. Pallante should be a lock for a pitching roster spot now.
If Edman and Nootbaar return to the lineup, what will that mean for Donovan and Burleson (2 of your better hitters), or Siani (with his gold glove). Who gets sent down? Fermin and Carlson?
Pallante has shown signs of greatness at times and then flame out when it matters most. He needs to be a bullpen arm that can eat innings if needed. They still need to get another good starter if they are serious about making and possibly succeeding in the playoffs.

At the very least, a RH bench bat (esp. against lefties) would seem advisable….Noot will make a difference for the top of the order (OBP), but relying on Edman & Walker is a mistake….& we should be past the point of thinking Goldy & Nado will rebound significantly - minor rebounds are the best we can expect from them ( an OPS over 700).
Even mentioning trading for another player batting sub 250 for us honestly is crazy. How low has this franchise gone? We might as, well try Baker and bring up Walker before then. I can't believe as bad as our bars here been nether one of those have been brought up yet? Were not going anywhere winning all these 1 run games.. Look at our run differential it's crazy we're even above 500 🤷

Goldie and Arenado are not struggling that bad. Nolan is hitting .260 which is middle of the road for the MLB. Goldie had a horrible start but is hitting around .260 for last 6 weeks as well. They both have 33/34 RBIs on a weak offensive team. Let them both figure themselves out.
paul dejong has 38 rbis and card fans could not wait to cut him last year by the way pdj has almost as many homers as nado and goldy combined for 2 million dollar salary as compared to 60 million ..wow money dont buy much nowadays for the cardinals..also this may be a shocker but right now pdj is a helluva lot better fielder than nado right now should have kept paulie and played him at third we would at least have a thirdbase power bat...by the way maybe that week offensive team is because of goldy an nado

No you always wanna be expected for the worst don't say Pallante is enough because he could hit the dropoff ans decline big time. I would add some good pitchers maybe 1 or 2 aces that will take some pressure off of him.
First, i am not drinking the Pallante kool-aid yet. Next Gray is a low 1 or high 2 so we need another top tier starter or we will get bounced quickly in the post season. We also need a bat. The DH used by Marmol is often not great. The other day, Crawford was our DH. WTF!!!
I agree taht we need to take our time bringing Ivan Herrera back. There may not be a spot for him.

First thing Gio has to go and Romero traded. Pallante is the Birds third best pitcher so keep starting him. No more Left handed hitters and bring back Herrera as a right handed hitter and catcher. He can back up Pages and Contreras can DH and learn to play first.

Wow Chase Davis needs to progress more quickly playing A ball and you have guys on this roster who have been here for 3 years and have done nothing. I see now that some players are rushed to improve to the Cardinal standard while others are handled like babies.

No. What we have will not work. We do not get to face. The Marlins and the Nationals in the playoffs if we even make it. Make a trade with the Angels. We can help each other. They need to rebuild their farm system. We need Anderson, Rengifo, and Pillar. Do what it takes. Get off of your tail now Mo and get it done.

I repeat, pitching is not our primary concern. It is more than adequate, even for the post-season. What we desperately need is a solid bat or two.
This rotation is certainly not more than adequate for the postseason. Our guys are not nearly as competitive as Philly’s or Atlanta’s for example. Adequate? MAYBE, but I would love an upgrade so we can feel confident about our playoff chances instead of exiting in the first round again
