I'm not a fan of moving Sonny. Looks like there will be a pretty large influx of young pitchers and we all know how much the FO values "Veteran Leadership". Middleton was a huge disappointment, but nothing you can do about injuries. Wish we could've found out what he could do.

Regarding Gray, I'm thinking some things will depend on how the playoffs go, JD. My first inclination is the Braves, Phillies, Astros or Royals will have the best chance at getting Gray to agree to a trade. The Royals have the upside of being young and talented behind him, and they may let Wacha leave in free agency, giving Gray a spot to fill in their rotation. But if he's willing to go "big city", the other teams all have aging pitchers in their rotations that will need to be replaced or holes caused by performance drop-offs that Gray would plug in very well. And all of them have solid teams behind him on the field that will score runs, something StL did not do well this year.
If the DeWitts were smart, which they are not when it comes to connecting with the Cardinals fan base, they would renegotiate their contract with Bally. Many fans like myself will not subscribe to the DeWitts own streaming service because we don’t want to give money to owners who are committed to telling the fans how they should think and feel about the crap show this organization has become. Case in point: DeWitt Jr’s comment Monday: “If I were a fan…” I’d support this team because it’s exciting to watch and look at all the young talent we have and Oh yes we sold 2.8 million tickets this season. Who does this schmuck think he is? He has zero concern for the fans. He is a blithering idiot because he won’t be getting the revenue of 2.8 million tickets sold next year. By the same token why does he think the local St Louis fan base is going to pay for a streaming service that lines his pockets while we won’t see a competitive team for at least a minimum of 2-3 years and could be as far out as five years, all the while this dimwit tells the fans: “here’s how you should view this.” He and his son and Mozeliak are three of the most arrogant and defiant public figures I’ve had the displeasure of seeing and hearing. Maybe down the line I’ll be willing to watch Cardinals baseball again when they put an exciting product on the field but I couldn’t hardly watch a game in September which I pay an exorbitant amount of money to Spectrum to watch games now. As for whether Sonny Gray stays or goes, I couldn’t care less.

Yes. Because that's how it's always happened with any and every team. Said player wants to be here or leave so they get the media to ask them questions after they make their declaration
I honestly think you should keep Arenado, Contreras, and Sonny all around if they want to be here. They can all be great vets to help usher in all the news guys, for real this time. Arenado has said he wants to be a leader for these guys and Sonny is perfect to lead the pitchers. I think moving on from Goldschmidt, not picking up Lynn or Gibson options, and trading Matz and Mikolas will save more than enough money to cover the RSN issue and the minor league investments. Even if you have to eat half of the Mikolas contract and some of the Matz contract, you still bring down payroll around 40 million from where it was last year. That becomes even more if you can trade off Fedde and Helsley.
I think trading Sonny Grey would be a mistake, I don’t believe that the cards could get anything near his value. Need to keep him.

We are creatures of habit, especially with TV. Who is pitching the game isn't the sole reason for viewership, but it could determine it. Bally's ratings for a Sonny Gray appearance harbored not only a higher amount of viewers, but retained viewers. If the Cardinals were to broadcast their own special network, like Houston did with Rocket City TV, then they would need a star pitcher to maintain viewership in my opinion. A name like Sonny Gray could do that. They would certainly make more money than the 50 mil he would be owed after three years....given he has equal or better success than his outing this year. I guess we'll see.

Off the three veteran I would (as long as they are willing) keep Arenado and Gray to guide younger guys and still be competitive. With 83 wins and outside of Kitt we have capable replacement. I would try to trade Wilson cause he wasn't a major factor this year and is blocking the youth movement at either C or DH.
Great trade would be Gray to Baltimore for Holiday.

I think we're keeping fedde, grey, contreras, arenado. They may entertain trades if they are willing to be traded. They will only trade them if they have very good offers. If they dont resign lynn, gibson, trade helsley, thats good enough. They fill in the gaps with rookies and hope for the best

A year or so ago, John Mozailak made the statement that the goal of the team was to win 90 games, not win a championship. If the championship is not your goal, you will never win one.
