- Many of you will remember our full-length video of the JOH. Rendenbach Tannery Tour we did last year. JR Oak Bark Tanned Leather outsoles are the best in the world, and as such, we talk about them a lot on this channel. Subsequently, we have decided that due to a number of questions we get regarding the quality of the outsoles themselves, and the process of oak bark tanning, that we would re-edit our factory tour into a shorter length, in the hopes that it can provide entertainment and answers to a whole host of new audience members.
Kirby Allison is guided on a tour of the Joh. Rendenbach Tannery by Hanns Redenbach. This amazing factory has been creating traditional, oak bark tanned, leather for over a century. The traditional method of oak-bark tanning has prevailed through four generations of leathermaking at Rendenbach. Hanns Rendenbach and his family were kind enough to open the doors of their historic facility and show us the process that leather goes through to be considered a JR Leather Outsole.

Our program uses only the finest materials and craftsmanship, with every pair being thoroughly inspected when it is received. Every pair of shoes is resoled using JR Rendenbach Oak Bark Tanned full leather outsoles and combination heels imported from Germany. This 150-year-old family-owned tannery makes what is widely considered the best leather outsoles in the world. Known for their incredible durability and water resistance, they are simply the best.

Awesome tour, people don't realize how heavy wet hides are, hard workers, love working with veg tanned leather.

Great factory tour! 👍🏼 Thank you for the introduction. I have Allen Edmonds penny loafers in horween cordovan and JR outsoles. This year it will be the fourth season of rocking em, but there is still no hint on soles replacement, though it's a question of coming out frequency of course.
Great to watch this again as I did the first video some time ago. Amazing how much work goes into the product. When the time comes, I will be using these soles as they are only a bit more in cost but so much more in quality.

Amazing project. I love and admire the passion by how Hanns talks about his heritage and process. My passion about shoes and leather comes from an old diary I found in my great-grandad house where he noted the purchase of leather from Tuscany in 1936 to make shoes. Funny enough, the company that sellz leather still exists! Unfortunately, the last shoes maker in my family was my grandad, and none else kept the heritage from 1890 or maybe earlier. I want do it. You Kerby inspired me and I hope one day to meet you in Dallas to offer my shoes. Ciao, from Italy ;)

Sadly true.
I just learned that Rendenbach is going out of business…such a shame. I have several pairs of AE shoes, which I rebuilt with Rendenbach soles. Tragic when a great traditional artisan goes out of business.
