    1:41 This reminds me of a DW documentary about the leather district in Italy where one of the workers lost a few fingers to a machine like this. I hope the tannery in this video treats and pays its employees well. It looks like a company that takes pride in its quality though.

    I am a leather craftman in S.Korea. It's very interesting to see the leather tanning process. But It would've been better to me If there was English subtitles on the video. I wanted to understand everything but It was not easy 😅

    I just bought a wallet with this beautiful material. It came with a certificate of authenticity with a #. Is there anyway to look up info using the #? IE when it was processed or any other info regarding the hide. I checked website but I could of missed it.

    What did they spray on the leather to get the glossy finishe?

      They can spray different products according to customer requests. In general these product can be colors, waxes, or resins.

      Dear Andre, the raw hides used by our associated tanneries derive from the slaughter of cattle destined, from the outset, to the food sector and they come from European farms which comply with EU legislation on animal welfare.

    What is hammered leather?

      Dear Charles, why are you getting nervous? "Genuine" means "authentic" in this case. And we use it because our products are made of real leather not vegan or plastic materials.

The transformation from raw hides into a material that will resist throughout time is a process that slowly happens into wooden drums, in full respect of man and the environment. An astonishing process based on the use of natural tannins extracted from trees, on modern technologies and machineries and on the slow passing of time.

      @@pellealvegetale In US, I believe, they categorize leather into 3 classes: full grain, top grain and so called genuine, which is, as above mentioned, really poor quality leather (splits I believe) :)

      A decade ago calcium chloride and sodium sulphide was used. Now we have unhairing agents which are milder then sulphide.

      We only affirm that no animal is killed for its skin. We only use the discarded by product of the food industry.

      No bovine or suine is killed for its skin. Actually only a minor part of the hides of bovines and suines killed for food are transformed in leather products because the price of the raw product is quite low. Are all the processes from the raw hide to the finished product that make the price of leather products to go up.

      Cow hides are now considered byproducts of meat production but at one time when they were worth more, were a part of the value of a cow. personally I would rather have something made of natural products than plastics

    how long time the process takes? from raw material to finished leather? only several days? is not vegetable tanning takes several weeks?

      From raw hide to tanning is 21 days. Thereafter crusting and finishing is 3-4 days time. Vegetable tanning is longer than chrome tanning.

    Where are most hides sourced from for members of your association? I assume europe? I have always been told most hides in the United States go to China and with current trade dispute hides here are literally worth nothing
