    Certified tech here: The SSD can be upgraded but the storage controller firmware in the SOC has to be reconfigured, this can only be done by booking a repair in apples systems and then entering a diagnostic mode allowing the mac to connect to Apples servers which will remotely install the configuration. And yes, I agree it's dumb.
    Edit: Theoretically they could probably enable people to do this at home since the entire update process is cloud based and only requires the user to enter the serial numbers of the new chips into their system. It works the same way for iphones, and they're going to enable self repair for those. Will they? Probably not.

    • @disoriented3971
      @disoriented3971 2 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      I'm guessing this is because (due to the controller being in the SOC) the wear-leveling information, etc has to be reset. I wonder if there is some kind of pairing going on as well between SOC and flash.

      @@disoriented3971 Sure there's reconfiguration; wear metadata, rewriting keys, and so on, but why does Apple need its servers involved, and why does it work fine when you replace one of the same size?

      Amazing, so everything has to be cloud based now, even a firmware restore. For your own safety and security I'm sure, definitely not so that the machine is tied to a UUID tied to you so that everything you do can be tracked and sold by Apple... Same reason they blocked Facebook from tracking you on the iPhone.

    The Mac Studio was such an opportunity for them to finally become repairable and modular.
    They made the devices harder to repair on purpose, they were not constrained by thinness or performance issues. They just wanted the computer to be unrepairable.

    • @xxnvytechxx6417
      @xxnvytechxx6417 2 ปีที่แล้ว +75

    • @stevengoetz6773
      @stevengoetz6773 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      hold on! what's not repairable, the PSU is modular, and so is the flash storage? You can replace the storage with the same sized component, you just can't upgrade it. The RAM is part of the SOC and can't be made modular, and designing a socket for the SOC doesn't seem worth the expense. Not sure what else you were hoping for. It's plenty repairable.

    • @rudymoralesjr
      @rudymoralesjr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +133

      Don't forget, their product announcement kept pushing how "modular" the Studio is. So not only is the product an antithesis to their previous repairability articles, they're misguiding consumers as well by misusing technical terms. Talk about false advertising, Apple style.

    • @testedtech
      @testedtech 2 ปีที่แล้ว +114

      @@mrld3005 Well, I don't think it's exactly the same. PS5's are subsidized to be sold nearly at cost (at launch anyway...). You could easily argue that the drive-less model is actually FURTHER DISCOUNTED rather than the drive model being an 'extra' $100.
      Subsidized means the hardware is very cost efficient for the amount of power you get for running games because they are not trying to profit on their console hardware itself, sometimes even selling at a loss. There is a very good reason it makes financial sense for Sony to subsidize their hardware (to build a user base, and profit on the games and other).
      The further discounting of the drive-less model makes a lot of strategic sense because now they have a model with a notably ($100) lower price than their "full" model with the drive. The drive-less model forces consumers to buy digital content and games, which are more profitable for Sony and are not re-saleable as used copies. There is no packaging, middle men, and minimal distribution (only server and bandwidth costs, which DEFINITELY are cheaper than the overhead of selling physical copies).
      You could compare this to an imaginary scenario where oil companies sold 2 models of cars. One costs less, but uses more gasoline. They can sell the car cheaper and make up the cost with selling them gas.
      A console is primarily purchased to play games on, and without a drive, you MUST buy the more profitable digital versions of the game.

Companies like the ones I listed are factually profitable targeting a market niche that is unlikely to shrink, by that measure it's highly unlikely it will ever be "too late". The key is consumer education and EXPANDING the niche that cares about that sort of thing. Even regulation will inevitably just be bypassed through loopholes or whatnot, but if consumers simply don't buy non-repairable or non-consumer friendly products there isn't really a loophole in that so long as at least a few big groups are dedicated to educating consumers.

    I worked for AppleCare for a while a few years ago and it's like this for everything- not just the hardware but the internal SOP's are designed to screw you at every opportunity. I'll never forget the call I had with a customer who had spent $1500 on a Certified Preowned (from an authorized vendor) 2018 MacBook Pro for school and ran into the butterfly keyboard issue. Fun fact: anything preowned is marked AS IS in big bold letters on our screen as soon as you pull up the serial. What does AS IS mean in Apple? "Not our problem." Even for confirmed, warranty issues. This series of keyboards was confirmed to have an issue and was advertised ON OUR SITE to be covered for repairs on anything to do with it. This chick had bought a CERTIFIED PREOWNED (for nearly the price of a new one mind you) that had APPLE'S STAMP OF APPROVAL ON IT buuuuuttttt because someone had bought it before her, all warranties were bucked. At that moment, I decided I would never buy an Apple product in my life- they don't care as long as they got their money out of you.

      and enter one of those defenders 😂. Apple has a philosophy. To make great software, you have to make your own hardware. I've always been a PC enthusiast and enjoyed upgrading parts. The problem is that Windows frequently crashed. A lot. Usually driver conflicts from various manufacturers. I now have a Mac Mini M1. Sure I can't rip it open and add a new Wifi card or RAM module...but it's never crashed. Not once in the six months since I've switched. Add that to the fact I really never have to worry about malware or viruses... I'm sold. Maybe it's just something that happens when you get older, but I don't I don't want to rip open computers just to add upgrades that don't work because of driver conflicts anymore. I just want something that works for my needs and so far Mac excells at that. I use to blame Windows, but you can't expect an OS manufacturer to make sure their OS works with every third party peripheral, or expect peripheral manufacturers to ensure their peripherals work with every other peripheral on the market. That's why Apple adopted the philosophy to build their own hardware. Yes, they still use third party suppliers for stuff, but very much under their own quality control. Enjoy your blue screens of death that you get from the freedom to mix and match hardware. The time I save from not dealing with that crap anymore has made my M1 Mac a very worthy investment and I can understand why Mac doesn't want to get the same reputation Windows has by allowing consumers to mix and match hardware willy nilly causing OS crashes.

      * An actual economic reason: there is a market of buying and ripping devices for parts to sell them to repair shops. Of course it is cheaper, faster and easier than source them from Apple.
      * Stolen devices are especially nice to disassemble and sell as parts. It is an actual problem that apple can solve in this horrible way, but sadly don't. Hackers are always one step ahead.
      * Secure boot is a thing and it requires a chain of trust, aka locking EVERYTHING down in a most annoying way, so you can't compromise a computer even with physical access. It includes inability to add something new to it without wiping it.

I owned many generations of their desktops, all-in-ones, and laptops, repaired several of them myself, and frequently did mid-cycle upgrades of RAM or disk to extend the devices' lifetimes.
    My how this company has fallen. I held my nose and bought a MacBook with soldered RAM a few years back, and then had to replace the entire mainboard for almost $700 when a $5 SMC chip on it failed last year. You could make the excuse that this is necessary on a laptop to achieve competitive levels of portability and battery life.

      No, they don't want the repair money. Time and time again, they've proven that they want you to buy a new product once your old one fails. If you absolutely want to repair anyhow, it's going to end up costing you almost the same as buying a new product anyhow. A $5 chip broke on the motherboard? Nope, ain't fixing that, you're gonna have to pay $1500 for a new motherboard, or spend $2000 on a new computer. Most people are dumb enough to buy a brand new computer instead. Of course there are repair shops that will fix your motherboard for a lot less, but Apple is doing their best to make sure all important parts are either hardware locked (so you can't swap certain chips from one Iphone to another one for example), or impossible for repair shops to buy, so there'll be no other option than to heavily over-pay for a repair, or buy a new computer/phone/whatever. I don't see how Apple can pretend to care about the enviroment, when they are actively doing everything they can to make sure none of their products are ever repaired, they just have large parts of the product completely replaced, or they just claim it's impossible to fix and even claim that anyone who says that they can do it, are a scam, despite the fact that a lot of the things that are "unrepairable" according to Apple, is still fixable.
      Apple are just actively doing their best to increase the amount of e-waste, while proffiting from selling even more products cause people aren't getting them repaired. They're directly profiting from harming the enviroment.

What drew my attention was this model. I got to talking with one of their sales reps who told me there was no way for an owner or an Apple repair tech to open it up after it had been bought. That I had to choose exactly the amount of RAM and storage ahead of time because it is soldered shut after being populated. No way to add upgrades, no way to fix something when it eventually will break, you're stuck with whatever you buy starting at two grand!

    When Apple first announced Apple Silicon, my first thought was that they were doing it to limit their customers ability to upgrade and repair their own devices (or buy the cheaper model and use after market, aka cheaper parts, to upgrade it as needed.). Much like not offering expandable storage in the iphone. By removing the option to upgrade later, you maintain an illusion of choice, but ultimately push more people to overspend becuase you dont know what you may need later on. I think their ultimate play down the road though is to make Mac OS like IOS and force users to install all programs via the app store. This way they can take their 30% cut on products like Adobe Premiere and AutoCad, as well as all the other software. Oh look, you have to pay 30% extra for Office and Adobe but not our own software. Ultimately, controlling the hardware will allow them to close any loopholes that would allow people to bypass this restriction.

    The worst part about this is that there is almost certainly no hardware difference between the actual SOC chiplet SSD controller between Mac studio versions. Anyone who thinks that the M1 silicon SSD control chip is physically different between SKUs is on some heavy copium. Speaking as someone who works in silicon, I can almost guarantee that the cost to produce different ASIC masks for different Mac Studio capacity SKUs far outweighs the ease of just wounding the SSD controller capacity down via supervisory flash settings or just locking it down in FW. There is no hardware reason the Mac Studio should not be upgradeable. Apple had to actively engineer this problem.

    Here's what really frustrates me about Apple. On the one hand - it is abundantly clear that they have AMAZING engineering resources within the company, and they're genuinely pushing the industry in ways that it needs. I use a Mac for work because I don't want the headaches that come with both Windows and Linux. I love macOS as an operating system, and there's a reasonable argument to be made that they've achieved the high level of interoperability and ease of use because of how vertically integrated everything is.
    On the other hand - they've clearly made the decision that they, and ONLY they, should have full control over the machines they produce. I have been repairing my own devices since I was a teenager, and there's no valid reason to do what they've done. I could understand them saying "We won't support components or peripherals not made and vetted by us" in pursuit of that seamlessness, but to go so far as to actively prevent it - even if that what's the customer wants - is blatantly anti-consumer.
    I'm stuck between a bit of a rock and a hard place here: I love macOS, but I don't like Apple's company values. I love Linux for development and tinkering and it's community, but it's not always well suited to do all of the things I want to do without a number of workarounds and headaches (and I daily drove Linux as a developer for years and still use it for my personal gaming rig). I find Windows to be a headache, and I really don't like the ways they're moving the OS into an advertising platform that you get the privilege to pay for.
    So where does that leave people like me? I'm happy to pay for good engineering (both hardware and software), and I want it to have a reasonable level of support behind it, but I also want to truly own my own devices. In the current market, that's not really an option anymore.

Other companies just don't have the cult following to get away with what Apple does, especially at Apple prices.

      @johngraham8278 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zodwraith5745 I don't know that I would agree with the statement that anyone else could do what Apple is doing. The fact that they decided to create their own Silicon and it's outperforming or trading blows with competitors who are drawing significantly more power is a testament to that. They've also just launched the first consumer chip that combines two separate GPU dyes, and people have been chasing that for decades. They also created the modern smartphone ecosystem, and are consistently putting out devices that are top of the line. You don't do that without having some real talent, and that's worth recognizing.
      The fact that they have *broadly* put out well designed, functional products that outlast their competitors is why they've developed the following they have. They've spent the past 20 years building their brand and it shows. Compare them to Samsung, who's been trying to follow their example for the past 15 or so years, and it's clear this isn't something that just anyone could do.

      @@johngraham8278 Intel has better engineers than Apple. Easily. Apple is on TSMC's bleeding edge nodes cause they charge their customers a premium so they damn well better be efficient. Intel engineers wrung enough performance out of 14nm to outpace Zen2 on 7nm, then _still_ beat the all mighty M1 and Zen3 with 10nm. That's impressive. And that's without dumping x86 compatibility like Apple did. If Intel can catch back up on the fab side they'll easily hold a strong lead again.
      Multi die isn't new. Apple is just the only one that can get away with using their iron fist to force everyone to adapt and actually support it cause it's their ball and their game. If that happened in the x86 space? Well, we all know SLI and Xfire worked fine when actually supported, but it was a developer afterthought at best. Putting 2 dies together isn't genius, AMD's had infinity fabric for years now. Besides, have you seen the actual performance of that twin-die GPU? Performs like a 3 year old part at insane prices.
      If you're talking about their aesthetic design I never liked it. That's a matter of taste, not talent. This is where they really shine, though as many people DO like their designs.
      Unfortunately all the scummy things they do like suing Samesung over a shape, suing Motorola (the inventor of the freaking cell phone?) cause they didn't want to pay fair price for their patents, slowing down old phones, lying about it, then making an excuse after getting busted, and actively engineering unrepairability into all their products makes it _really_ easy to discount anything good that they do.

It walks along the lines of unethical . There s isn’t even any real advantage to having the ssd soldered. I ve heard people say that it s faster . No it s not . We have the internet . Anybody can check the numbers and the speeds of different ssd s out there. Oh and just to put the cherry on top : iphone 13 : amazing processor and hardware but it s rocking the lightning port 🤣 usb 2.0 speeds . Apple 🍎 i really hope u get yours and the EU puts you in place with regulations on ports and on right to repair . They got hundreds of billions offshore like liquidities …. This got outta pocket a long time ago … out of their consumers pockets to be exact. They answer to no one and lack moral discernment . Take care y’all 😃🙏🏻🤗. But the processors are amazing and I respect the integration of the cpu and gpu and RAM 🐏 . Cause that actually wields a big boost in performance. I'm on a 2014 MSI gaming laptop that I got for cheap. It came with in i7, 8GB RAM, Nvidia 840m a hard drive, and a DVD. I upgraded the RAM to 16GB and swapped the HDD and DVD to 256GB SSD and 1TB SSD. The purpose for it was mainly to record music (Pro Tools), some video editing, and casual gaming just because it can. I felt like I got a pretty capable system (at the time) for a low price and partly because I was able to upgrade it myself. The cooling fan started sounding like a chainsaw after a while, so I was able to swap that out easily as well. The battery failed, so I got a new battery. The thing is still working fine.
    That being said, it's 2022 now and there are things I don't like about it. Using a USB 3 hub is not the business. There are a couple of things that randomly need to be un-plugged and plugged back in to work. The system is also a small loud space heater. I'm also at a place where I'm tired of troubleshooting things at random when they were working the last time I touched them and I've done nothing myself to break them. Such is the life of a Windows/Android user.
    I'm considering a refresh in the next year and have been strongly considering switching to the Apple ecosystem (Mac, iPhone, Apple Watch) for the "it just works" factor. Superior power and thermal management is also appealing. I live in Phoenix and I don't need a heater in a 10x10 room. Issues like this, though... This is what makes me stop and think again. I could justify some extra money over many years for a better experience, but I am not in a mood to pay people extra just because f*** you. I'm also not a fan of their attitude toward consumers in general. I've been thinking quite a bit about a Mac Book Air or 14" Pro, then switching from Pixel to iPhone, Samsung Watch to Apple, but then I see this. Then I remember they have a damn thunderbolt cable on their website for $130.
    That makes me want to boycott them for life, but then I remember that the anti-consumer stuff that they do affects the other products. My Pixel 6 didn't come with a charger or headphone jack. YAY! Value! I haven't been able to swap batteries (without getting wild with a heat source and destroying a screen) for several years now. My wife is on her second expensive Surface laptop now and they are just as bad. I tried to swap batteries on a Surface Book 2, started cracking the screen, then stopped. A Surface Laptop Studio, which is kind of awesome, has some kind of problem with it already.
    So... If other products are adopting these same @#$% practices but don't work as well, then where does that leave us? I suppose it's either more low-tech devices that you can open, desktops, or just sucking it up and handing over the money. Videos like this remind me of why I've never adopted Apple's stuff, though. I know they're good at certain things, but they can also burn in hell. It's complicated.

    This entire video really sheds light and brings forward the terrifying reality of unregulated corporations choosing what they think is "best" for the consumer. The non-removable (very difficult) power cord of the studio display, the complexity to swap the memory modules of the Mac studio, and the idea that you need ANOTHER Mac just to REPAIR THE OS ON THE COMPUTER ITSELF. It's insane to think there is no federal oversight of these insulting practices, all of which should be entirely criminal in any "first world" nation. Hell, in any nation. It should without a doubt be the consumer's right to tinker and repair any part of any device they spend their money on. It is in my home, with my life on it, it's my right. No one is asking Apple to share every top secret detail on the campus, we're just asking to be able to replace a god d*mn SSD. The fact that they can create an OS repair environment one year and then remove it the next is a pure spit in the face to its consumers. It's a spit in the face to any person to have such a vital feature taken away like that.
    And don't for a second believe that these corporations have it 'too hard" or it's "too expensive" to make these basic features of their products. If every world government right now told every tech giant they had to make their products entire modular, they'd get it done in a week. There is no excuse anymore as to why we shouldn't be able to just buy next year's SOC for my couple year phone, have it put in, and then keep it living another 5 years. We can't replace our batteries, we can't upgrade our SSDs, we can upgrade the SOCs, and for what? All because of "security, simplicity, and linear integration?" I use the world OUR for a reason, because it should be OUR right to choose what we do with these devices. If we can still use milling machines from the 70's, I should still be able to use my phone from 6 years ago. And if I myself can't physically perform these improvements or repairs myself, I should be able to walk into my local town and pay someone who is experienced and professional enough to do so. Parts that should be demanded of every OEM and corporation to provide to these shops.
