Fantastic video, thank you so much! I am learning zBrush (after owning it for a number of years and always being overwhelmed), finally bitten the bullet and am 'getting on with it'. I am a beginner at anatomy too so I have a lot to learn! This video was perfect! I want to sculpt the human form, starting with the head, and I guess even before that, a skull would be nice! Just out of interest, how long did that skull take you? I'm guessing for someone at my level it's going to take me weeks (I can't draw, and I'm not a traditional brush/crayon/pencil artist), but you've got to start somewhere :) Thank you so much for sharing your gifts and educating me!
Hey! Great job on starting your art journey! Anatomy is the way to go! Keep practicing one small thing at a time and eventually you will get better and faster! When I first started out it took me a week (or more) to sculpt a face or a skull, mainly because I didn’t understand the shapes, especially from various angles. Check out lots of different artists and their anatomy lessons as well. Try sculpting the different parts of the skull and comparing your shapes to reference images from different angles (high, low, side, etc) this will help you get the forms much quicker in 3D. Best of luck on your journey! Art is a life long pursuit! Never give up!! :D
I'm still an ignoramus at Zbrush, fresh from the hubris of Daz3D, but would it be possible to shape faces in Zbrush by working with the skin alone, instead of building up the anatomical layers underneath it?
Hello! Yes it is totally possible to sculpt the face without all the form underneath. A lot of the exercises of sculpting the anatomy beneath is simply practice to remember the forms and subtleties of the face. There are so many pieces and muscles in the human face that it’s difficult to navigate sometimes. Doing exercises like this helps our brains retain the structure when we’re working on something, especially from scratch. Its not totally necessary, but it does help to know the building-blocks of the body and give ourselves as many tools as we can to create more accurate representations. Not everyone works this way, but I have grown a lot from doing exercises like this. Once I put that knowledge in my head it’s there to stay, as long as I refresh it once in a while. :) Thanks for watching!
