Really nice repair there! And I would have personally used black side buttons to compliment the black panel, and other black components (e.g. the black Pentalobe screws).
Amazing job Hugh!!! That has to be one of the most intricate and labor-intensive repairs I’ve ever seen, and how you’re able to do it all and make it seem so easy is truly incredible!!!
Fantastic result! As a suggestion It would be nice to see a summary of the time and costs involved in your repairs. Great video, I like the super close-ups.
Not going to attempt a repair on my smartphone anytime soon, however the persistent and attention to detail this guy shows deserves a view and a thumbs up! Insanely done by Huge!!
10:10 There are simple rubber rings that can be placed underneath iPhone lenses when you perform back glass repair to prevent the lenses sinking, think like really small rubber bands. They cost like $3 for a pack of 100.
I always am so impressed with the level of repair and technique used to building a phone. I am always impressed. I would not have the patience nor the skill to do it. Well done!
Yeah idk maybe keep the whole red frame and glass but maybe use a black camera lens, the black buttons, and maybe black sim tray. Or keep the black glass with red lens and then the black buttons and sim tray.
THIS IS THE BEST FIX OF A PHONE THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN ON INTERNET!! The custom build of back housing is sick! tbh, Black button looks way better. 10/10 fix! This is why #RightToRepair is important!!
Unless the old owner removes the iCloud lock there is NO LEGAL WAY to get it removed… the ones you can „buy“ online are from Apple employees who have access to this data via their job and are making extra money on the side
Quick tip that I learned Hugh: If you want the charging pad to look as though it's not been meddled with at all, use the traditional way to remove back glass (the heat gun) and then push the charging pad out from the other side. Works like a charm for me.
13:45 i really hope you reprogrammed the new taptic engine, it's really important to mention that a mismatched taptic engine can cause missing proper vibration patterns, this started with the iPhone 8. Patterns may work for a while, but it can easily decide to not work anymore after a while if it's mismatched. The FPC's for Taptic Engine reading are even included in the JC V1S board for True Tone reading.
@@TheSpotify95 true but it might still have been electrically active even if its not longer physically functional so the keys might been able to be pulled from the remnants

Hi Hugh, love this video. Been thinking of doing something like this for an iPhone 8 recently but my "workshop" lacks the tools. Good to see that there's an audience forthis, even if it's a small one. Keep up the good work, as it inspires me to keep doing my own repairs.
Well done! 👏🏻 I thought that this phone would not be repairable and Hugh does his magic! Less electronic waste! And MKBHD would love this color combination!

@@sealwheel Back when I used to work on phones, most of the programs I tried to remove the iCloud were worthless cash grabs. I’m thinking what made it possible here was the fact that it was running iOS 12.

Hugh, are you sure it's a good idea to use old corroded screws to hold the taptic engine in place? This could cost you in the long run if the corrosion starts spreading further...
@@jimalcott760 you _can_ update it through itunes in recovery mode if it's locked or signed into an account. really the only circumstance that'd be useful in is if: the device thinks its signed into icloud, but in apple's database it's not. Sort of like how the Home button is paired to the motherboard on iPhone models with a Home button like mine, if the Home button is damaged it can’t be repaired except by Apple itself
Buttons totally should have been black. I'm surprised you didn't appear to clean the internal parts from the old phone, even the mainboard appeared to have debris on it although maybe those were damage marks.
Yeah its kind of a pain to hide. I had an iPhone 8 that I replaced the glass on and instead of using glue to keep the lens up, I used a few of the tiny shards of broken back glass around the lens and it worked great.
This looks rather amazing, even I would’ve chosen the black buttons. You should’ve taken that opportunity and add the MagSafe magents. Haven’t seen a Xr with MagSafe yet.
Given how Apple has control over pretty much every aspect of their products, it still baffles me how unnecessarily complex these phones look inside. It looks like a rat's nest inside, with many different screw types and sizes, brackets, ribbon cables running everywhere... The manufacturing process must be a nightmare.
I just witnessed this man raised a iPhone from the dead. All that machine u have is worth it, u really went deep on this 1. That device u used which enabled the replacement screen to be able to use True Tone is 👌🏾. Great work.
I'm shocked and impressed both at same time.. this is how every electronic part should be salvaged. Mother Earth is going to be happy with everything you've done so far.
I think the buttons should have also been black. It just would have made sense with the black back glass, instead of the glass just kind of being there, like an accent wall in a house. What I'm saying is, the buttons would have complimented the back glass if they were the same color.

Hi Hugh, I’m 15 and I don’t have experience repairing phones but after watching your videos I’ve become interested in doing so. I’m considering starting to flip broken phones, do you have any advice?
7:12 That's exactly what I did. I found a Walmart/Tracfone 64GB XR that fell from a car and was in the roadway. The LCD was entirely shattered and the face ID camera was crushed, but the back of the phone survived because of the case. iCloud locked, but without face-ID and without a screen it's functionally totaled. A screen replacement costs more than a replacement device. I then got a clean-iCloud factory-unlocked 256GB Xr for $220 with a cracked back to housing-swap it. I now have the perfect Xr I wanted, and a spare parts brick. Both had stable batteries so at the very least there's a spare battery left in it for sure.
