I seem to have been incredibly fortunate, as the device was in very reasonable condition with no nasty surprises. I was worried that perhaps the battery would be problematic, but again, thankfully it holds charge quite well for its' age. My stomach dropped when I saw the listings, though. Complete minefield.
@@davidsolis3114 Sorry didn't see the reply until someone liked my comment. On cell devices the account is tied together with the IMEI which is stored on the baseband and can't be programmed with the method I use. There's a few cell iPads (gen 4 and lower) that I do a resistor mod on which works well but isn't really worth doing now unless I get them in a bulk lot for next to nothing.

I noticed the S4 is GT-I9505 model. The reason why the screen acts up when you press the back part of the board because the midframe of the new screen could be for a different model of the S4 and causes some components to touch a part of the midframe causing a short. Samsung used to revise the midframe, charging sub-boards and logic boards for different countries where it was sold in the past. For it to work flawlessly, you'd need a matching screen/midframe assembly and a charging port intended for a GT-I9505 S4. EDIT: I suddenly remebered, the purple screen/midframe assembly is intended for a GT-I9500 (Exynos non-LTE) variant. The logic board you have is a GT-I9505 (Snapdragon LTE enabled). Using an Exynos logic board on a GT-I9505 midframe and vice-versa causes the screen to turn off when the back part is pressed. And when you try to screw everything back together, the screen won't work at all.
Actually, his purple frame was for the 2.3GHz GT-i9506. I've had a 9506 board in a 9505 casing and charging port. It worked, but you had to be careful with the power button as it would reset if you pushed harder on it. Later traded it for a S3 Neo i9301. Not even to this day the chap who accepted the trade didn't even call me back on the issue.

Your Note 4 probably has an EMMC Issue. Its sadly a very common issue especially on the Snapdragon 805 variants. Basically due to bad solder joints the Note 4's EMMC memory chip can loose connection causing the phone to be dead. It can however be fixed by reballing the EMMC chip. I myself got a lot of 6 N910F Note 4's and 3 had this issue. I got 2 at least working by swapping boards and displays. *Edit : I meant N910F. The N915F of is the Note Edge. It also suffers from the same issue tough :/
What about the Samsung S4 Exynos variant? I have one and once dropped it on the street years ago, since then the phone randomly reboots while I'm using and it got worse to the point where it seems to bootloops but sometime manages to boot, but only for a few minutes before it shuts down on its own. I always thought that I might have made something loose inside.

It's frankly astounding how Samsung just gets a pass for having used displays for years - even until fairly recently - that become unusable after just a few years of use. This is not an issue with most screens. I get that OLED has advantages, but this is a massive downside that rarely gets talked about. I remember people used to excuse the issue as some fringe issue that most people will never run into, but years later that's proven to be false - it's very common.
I did this recently, I bought an iPhone parts lot and turns out they were all horribly water damaged, can’t return because they were sold as for parts, sadly they were sold as “untested” and I didn’t see the major red flags. Also I may have an explanation for the S7 edges not powering on, I had a lot of S7’s which most didn’t power on, and my main S7 developed the same issue. The PowerIC or the RAM goes bad, the device goes into a boot looping state before just not taking power properly, it can’t regulate the power properly
A fix for the s4 is to put a folded up piece of paper on behind the display flex cable then close the midframe. I used the same trick with my Nokia 6.1 plus on which I broke the battery connector on the corner trying to go in EDL mode and it's still working even after all these years.
i have seen the white notification, that's a real hard brick you got there. Edit: I got it on my S4 that I still have in my possession. I damaged the IMEI trying to root it like 5 years ago. Those Galaxy S6 and S7 Edge phones were absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Apple has nothing on Samsung in that department. Just wow. My Note9 looks great, but those phones were the pinnacle of design.
Sorry to hear that this wasn't exactly plain sailing, but I'm glad to hear that you managed to get something useful out of this parts lot. I'm also glad it went to you, rather than someone else who may not have been able to use the items (or would have just returned them upon receipt). Remember, eBay buyers can return an item for "not as described", for pretty much any reason, whereby the seller than has to pay return postage AND refund in full.
Nice to see this Every Samsung phone I've owned or my partners has suffered all these issues... Charging Port (everyone) Screen Burn (everyone, but very bad on OLED) Such a shame, such a good product let down by crap hardware issues.
My experience is the complete opposite. A LOT of my friends used Samsung phones all their life, some low end, some mid end but mostly high end S and Note lines. Zero problems. The only time I heard something happening with one of their phones was only one friend that broke the screen of his S20 and had to replace it, and was actually shocked for it not being that expensive to fix, with a genuine brand new display. Was like 150€. Other than that, absolutely zero problems. However my gf owned iPhones all her life and she buys a new one every 1-2 years because her last one breaks in some random way that apple wont fix or its not worth it. Her current iPhone 13 (not pro) already has a broken volume up key. It wont even physically click, feels stuck, she has to use the quicksettings to turn up the volume. I guess it really is how you handle phones, how many falls or physical stress you subject them to, and maybe also a dose of luck. My gf is always dropping her phone and that is a huge explanation why all her iPhones break to unfixable ways in a year. She uses glass screen protectors and bulky cases on purpose because of this, but the impacts of it constantly falling eventually start messing up with the internals. Some people even without noticing put a lot of strain on their phones hardware. The charging port is a great example, people often put a lot of strain on that port by using bad cables or pulling on them too hard or whatever.
@Ellis The DJ Further more... Why are you making excuses for a Flagship phone. It should work as described without issues or having to compensate for the hardware short comings... It's not like these products are cheap and nasty China clones. Apple can get it right... Why can't Samsung.... And none of us want to use Apple Agreed, most of these issues happen outside the 12 month or 24 month normal contract period. But lots of us, me included haven't had a phone contract for 15 years or more now We buy secondhand flagship handsets to run prepaid SIM cards....
I wish we have a refurbishing company here where I live, because we don't even have a big movement selling old phones or broken phones so we make a ton of unnecessary E-waste.
FYI. Current draw is measured in amps, period. For example, 152 mA. It's not correct to add an extraneous "-hour" in the context of current draw. That's why the current meter has just an "A" period. Amp-hours is a current over some period of time, for example the capacity of a battery such as 3850 mAh. Cheers.
The main problem with resellers of damaged devices on eBay is that some people think what they have is worth more than it really is or they are looking for someone to buy who doesn't know up from down. I don't think 150 was too much to pay, but since the seller was dishonest, then perhaps the price could have been lower.
This. And if your selling a for parts lot and somebody asks you a specific question you need to be truthfully about the condition or truthfull that you're too lazy to check. Nothing makes me more angry than people who lie about the condition of stuff they sell in the hopes the buyer won't follow up. If you can't be a$$3d to know the condition of your own inventory you shouldn't be selling it full stop.
Always cracks me up when I see a vintage computer listed for sale as "untested", a full setup is pictured and all it requires is a standard power cord. Who are they kidding?
Brilliant job, man! I have one question about those older Samsung phones with removable back panels. Is there an easy way to make them run without a battery? I have made some attempts at that using small buck converter, but after the phone boots up with some percentage of battery, that percentage slowly starts to go down, even though the power supply is more than enough. Any ideas?
i'm no expert or professional but i think the batteries have hardware in them that helps the phone know what the battery is at. with your current setup it doesn't have anything to tell it the state of the battery. you could try dismantling a battery (obviously carefully) to get the little board that handles the communications and then run power through, that might fix your problem but that's just an amateur's guess
Why would you even do this? Besides just figuring out if it’s possible. Because I don’t think it’s very convenient if you have to stand next to a outlet when you want to use your phone.
find a Samsung battery (preferably for the phone u want to do this on) the battery can be dead its ok, then carefully separate and cut off the bms board from the battery cell and plug your + and - to that
I used to buy alot phones with defects in the past... But finding phones with working displays and only waterdamage is very hard, most plp slam their phones how it seems on the ground all the time.
Thanks for showing this video. I bought a very large iPhone/iPad/iPod and some non-Apple phones in 2016 from a large company with my at-the-time business partner. Whilst trying to book these in, we discovered that this lot were more faulty than expected ie: mainly iCloud locked. Being relatively new to iCloud locked devices I thought I could unlock them. My business partner offered his half to me and I accepted and paid him for his half. So 7 years later (2016-2023) I have invested ~$20k of stock and I am just under $10k return. This does not include my time to process the equipment, advertising fees, free postage, etc, so a $10k loss thus far. I may do a video on this one day...
I had two OnePlus Nord N100 phones. One, a Metro by T-Mobile phone had a severely cracked screen. The other had a ripped back panel and shorted out battery. I used the back panel and battery from the broken screen phone on the one with the ripped back and bad battery. Now the one works and I sold it. The other one was reduced to spare parts.

it is indeed crazy the Samsung oled screens cost so much. I can only assume it's the curved edges and smaller production scale because even many iPhone OLEDs are cheaper
Samsung's edge displays are very expensive to repair. I tried to get a replacement screen for Galaxy S8 from AliExpress, and found even the faulty display costs about the same as the fine used ones.
I just did a bad purchase too. An M1 MacBook Air for 100€. I thought it was a good deal because of the cracked display I would be able to fix. Sadly it had a lock on it, so it is pretty much just junk. I might be able to sell the top case as working and the board as working but locked.
if these are old enough phones to not have modern data protection and kill switches you may be able to recover the data and sometimes peoples photos and documents can be valuable and could be used to recover the purchase prices.

MicroUSB. While that port was better than its predecessor, it was still an absolutely horrible port that lived a far longer life than it should have. Hell, it is currently still alive in some cheap (and some not so cheap) crap.
If I asked the seller are these cracked and he said no. Only to find out indeed they were cracked I would have come after him. Saying why are these phones cracked? He would blame it on the shipping company and I would say don't blame them you either A) lied to me or B) caused them to get cracked during shipping due to a lack of ensuring these items are protected during transit. This is now where you settle, you either threaten to report him to eBay or B get a partial refund through Zelle (so he can't get his money back)

I'm also glad it went to you, rather than someone else who may not have been able to use the items (or would have just returned them upon receipt). Remember, eBay buyers can return an item for "not as described", for pretty much any reason, whereby the seller than has to pay return postage AND refund in full.
Great to see Hugh working on Android phones
If anyone can get these working, it's you. Thanks for another great video.
Nice to see this
Every Samsung phone I've owned or my partners has suffered all these issues...
Charging Port (everyone)
Screen Burn (everyone, but very bad on OLED)
Such a shame, such a good product let down by crap hardware issues.
Still better then apple
@Ellis The DJ You don't work outside in full sunshine much then
@Ellis The DJ Further more...
Why are you making excuses for a Flagship phone.
It should work as described without issues or having to compensate for the hardware short comings...
It's not like these products are cheap and nasty China clones.
Apple can get it right... Why can't Samsung.... And none of us want to use Apple
Agreed, most of these issues happen outside the 12 month or 24 month normal contract period.
But lots of us, me included haven't had a phone contract for 15 years or more now
We buy secondhand flagship handsets to run prepaid SIM cards....
@@DrifterThrifters lol no
I wish we have a refurbishing company here where I live, because we don't even have a big movement selling old phones or broken phones so we make a ton of unnecessary E-waste.
Thanks for another great video Hugh Jeffreys or, as auto-generated captions call you, Huge Jeffries.
I remember when you only had 121K Subscribers, love your videos keep up the great work 👌 👍
Most "untested" items/lots I've come across aren't untested at all, the seller knows they're bad.
Bingo. Untested is basically synonymous with "tested & scrap", regardless of what electronic device we're talking about here
Always cracks me up when I see a vintage computer listed for sale as "untested", a full setup is pictured and all it requires is a standard power cord. Who are they kidding?
Sorry you got burned my friend. But good on you..your skills have allowed you to just about break even. Well done sir.
Minor mistake at 2:50. Current draw is mA and capacity is mAh.
Ebay sellers: "Mint condition fully functional"
Nice video as Always. But these kind of phone are too expensive there. Here in Finland they have no value. Most of the time they are free or 5-10€. I mean for that S7 and S6. Those S4 and S3 would be sent to recycle center
Buy them in your country and sell it to the rest of the world
@@ahyaan2552 I did once or twice. I had trip to another country. I bought one laptop and 2 phone. I sold them in destination country and about 40% of my trip costs returned. But here working has much more money. When you are working here then you have no time

That seller, from the picture of the phones on eBay & some of the fancy graphics in the title of the listing, along with the quick preview of the other listings that the seller is selling, it is the seller i think it is. I got a phone from them too. But it was faulty, half the touch screen did not work, battery was rather bulged but still turned on. Returned it, and they are selling it again for the same price, with the battery issue mentioned but not the faulty touchscreen. But yes, was a dodgy lot hugh had bought, but still made something out of it, at least.
I have some experience with part lots also, given you have the ebay chat history, I would expect the outcome to be a "partial refund" on this one, or you would likely have to "fight" for a full return, but you're past that. Also 250k views in a month, the parts have more than paid for themselves once you factor in the content ;^) (+ editing time, voiceover etc:)
Always a pleasure to watch your videos bro❤
I really do not like curved displays, but s7 edge is such a gorgeous phone.
Great job Hugh and your advice is allways helpful.
Amazing as usual!!!!
I like seeing you try and get some value out of your investment. Nice work.
Since it's very clear the seller wasn't truthful, couldn't you have gotten your money back?
hey hugh ive noticed you were using a metal pry tool on the battery NEVER DO THAT there is a high probability of the battery getting punctured by the pry tool and exploding. dont ask me how i know this
The gold S7 edge is the most beatifull phone for me
Out of curiosity, if you were so inclined, could you have soldered on a USB C port to replace the micro on that S6?
Makes me happy to have our modern tech.
You never gave the phone up you never let these phones down
I like to sing-a, about the moon-a and the sun-a and the spring-a.
Oh I think I know that seller, they sell really overpriced devices. They list Macbooks like "Core i5 SUPER FAST INTEL MACOSX 8GB RAM" and some fancy symbols. Disgusting
Saw a tablet similar to the Tab S I just fixed up. It was a better version of it but he's asking $450 for it..... (Shown at 03:30)
@@HughJeffreys You can buy a Tab S4 for that money wtf
The Galaxy S6 was worth the repair because it fully works and is cosmetically flawless
These videos always somehow entertain me
that's what happened to my samsung note 5. When I charged it it just showed a white led light. Idk why but i think it's because of the broken screen. I can't buy a new screen though as it's very pricey. Nice video Hugh!
it is indeed crazy the Samsung oled screens cost so much. I can only assume it's the curved edges and smaller production scale because even many iPhone OLEDs are cheaper
i get crazy when i see ur new video great job great job
Samsung's edge displays are very expensive to repair.
I tried to get a replacement screen for Galaxy S8 from AliExpress, and found even the faulty display costs about the same as the fine used ones.
Burn in is a real problem with these OLED displays. The reason I'd prefer LCDs for phone and computer displays.
LCDs look like they are from the 90s compared to OLEDs. I dont know anybody who would prefer an LCD over an OLED.
@@ali_el_baba3665 I'd rather have the image quality of a late 90's active matrix LCD than this burn in.
I just did a bad purchase too. An M1 MacBook Air for 100€. I thought it was a good deal because of the cracked display I would be able to fix. Sadly it had a lock on it, so it is pretty much just junk. I might be able to sell the top case as working and the board as working but locked.
You might be buying a stolen mac, try and search the owner!
@@affalterbachamg2094 yeah he should
The S3 has gotta be one of my favorite Samsung models, so simple, before the Samsung batteries started expanding
I have fond memories of my S7. More than the Nexus 4 and 5 or the original Galaxy S that I had before.
I love you hugh you’re the best
Hugh is awesome!
Good work👍
excellent video as always! God bless you and yours!
if these are old enough phones to not have modern data protection and kill switches you may be able to recover the data and sometimes peoples photos and documents can be valuable and could be used to recover the purchase prices.
What do you usually search for on eBay to get lots like these?

Hi Hugh, are you going to be doing an iPhone SE 3 tear down, just wondering because I haven’t seen anyone else do one yet.
Sure!
my mi max 3 cost 130, 2 years ago, still going strong. they sell for upto a 100 2nd hand on ebay, thats value for money
thank you for your time
I'm using an s7 edge please don't steal my display oh yeah and a little bit of the display is black so you probably don't want it luckily
Nice video, please do more of this type
Some of my family had S7s and I remember at the end there was massive amounts of pink burn in
Fascinating! I enjoyed that and I'm glad you got some value out of the purchase in the end.
Great video as always, Do people actually use such old phones still?
My friends great aunt has a Galaxy S8 and it has probably the worst pink screen burn in I’ve even seen, the whole display was pink and she just used it like that
was literally going for this lot. im glad you got it and i didnt lol. nah jk keep up the good work and keep inspiring people
I might be mixing things up, but I think the white light means something is shorted inside. Try cleaning it with alcohol
I love the s6 and s7 edges I had them in gold. My s6 edge plus was stolen when it was still in perfect condition :( and then I bought the s7 because that one looked almost the same
Just return it as it's not as described?....
On the one with the white light maybe someone made a trashy repair and used a flashlight instead of an LED
That kind of ripoff is a fairly common thing in the states of what I have seen.
I have never heard of such ripoff in Sweden.
like you say, you had your profits.
so you also must be ready to have a bad deal. also if you know you buy crap
so how can you be ripped off, when you had deals, you "ripped off" other sellers?
Sometimes you win, sometimes not.
And as we can see in the video, you had your successfull repairs
I bought computer lot for parts on eBay. It said untested but the seller is a refurbisher. I have learn my lesson. They sell them for parts knowing it’s garbage.
This is now where you settle, you either threaten to report him to eBay or B get a partial refund through Zelle (so he can't get his money back)
Those faulty boards may be easily diagnosed using a thermal imager, could be just a shorted capacitor or something easy. Thermal imagers are getting cheap nowdays the UNI-T ones are great.
@J Hemphill They're getting pretty affordable now, the UTI 260B is $430AUD
