    I did this mod myself just the other day. It's actually waaaaay easier if you remove the joysick box before removing the original board, and after placing in the new board. That way you don't have to awkwardly slip the edge of the board under the edge of the stick box. The hardest part for me was getting the shoulder and Z triggers seated properly during reassembly as the ribbon cables on the new board are quite stiff.

      Yeah agree with that. I realised as I was doing it that I was going at it the wrong way.

    I recommend putting a stock stick in with the kit it will perform very similar to OEM or the switch controller

    Is it possible to use the controller to access the suspend menu on the Switch N64 app? I use a lot of save states.
    Thanks for testing the controller on PC btw, not a lot of people have done that and I would definitely be interested in using this gamepad on both Switch and PC.

    Does anyone know how to get this working on Mac? It recognises it as a n64 Bluetooth mod kit but the C buttons and the A and B don’t register.

    Also you can get it to work on the system with a controller dongle

    why not test it on the PC with an actual N64 emulator? that seems to make more sense. I know some people may like to use this on other non-n64 games, but most people will just use it on n64 emulators/hardware

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  หลายเดือนก่อน

      For the very simple reason that Nintendo aren’t overly thrilled at people broadcasting themselves using emulators of Nintendo products. We all know how controllers from 8Bitdo and Retrobit will mainly be used, so no point risking the knock on the door from Nintendo’s legal department by putting it on TH-cam.

    Just to note, you can actually use them on the original hardware, you just need to buy a bluetooth adapter for the N64 and then pair it. Like from IntecGaming, or Blue Retro, ect. But other than that, nicely done tutorial. 😁

    • @ToughMonkey

      Hi, thanks for the comments. I mention in the last few minutes about the Bluetooth dongles you can get for the N64, just not by 8BitDo which is unusual as they do them for several other consoles.

      The blueretro doesn't really work all that great with this mod kit. Have you actually tried any of these adapters with the mod kit or are you just assuming they'll work?

      @@genitalgrinder5704 I don't know about the chap who originally posted the comment but I've not tried any bluetooth adapter for the N64, I'm just aware there are several available, but none by 8BitDo.

    Controller pak is compatible with the mod?

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Controller Pak goes in the same slot as the Rumble Pack doesn’t it? It’s that same slot that part of mod kit goes into. The thing that looks like a smaller version of the rumble pack in the mod kit has all the power and Bluetooth bits built into it, which means the Controller Pak isn’t compatible I’m afraid.

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t know I’m afraid. I’ve not got the means to test that. The website doesn’t suggest it’s compatible with Mac, but then it also doesn’t say it’s compatible with Windows when it clearly is!

    I wished the C-buttons were mapped as their own buttons like with Retro Fighters' or unbranded offerings. Playing certain games like DDR Disney's Dancing Museum and Tony Hawk will give you a hard time due to the C buttons not being separated buttons.

    thanks. I found this review very informative. And Im glad you were honest and tested it with games like goldeneye instead of just saying "its great" without actually using it, like a number of other youtubers apparently do.

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you. I wanted to show it in action on a game but I think TH-camrs are very careful about what games they show as apparently Nintendo can be a bit sensitive about their own games being shown on TH-cam. I don’t know how true it is but I’d rather not get into trouble with Nintendo.

  • @victorstk
    @victorstk ปีที่แล้ว +1

    actually you can use it on the original n64, all you need is to install a blueretro adapter

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mention towards the end of the video that adapters are available for the original N64 but not by 8BitDo. Someone else commented about Blueretro adapters earlier but someone else then suggested they didn’t work. I can’t vouch for the compatibility of other brands as I haven’t tried them.

  • @choiwaynekiet

    you can totally map the c buttons to other than the r stick.

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's right, you can do that. Obviously you'd lose the function of a right analogue stick, but then that's probably less common than having B/C & Y/Z buttons (if considering it as a six-buttoned SEGA-style pad).

    Cool video and much appreciated but im actually more interested in that wallmount system you have going on for all your controllers; what are using to mount those? I would love to set up a board like that!

    • @ToughMonkey
      @ToughMonkey  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching. The wall display thing was something I started after I saw a poster on a social media post showing different generations of controllers. I very nearly bought it, but stopped myself when I thought I could replicate it for real with all of the controllers I’ve built up over the years. Every controller you see up there are spare second controllers so I didn’t necessarily need to have quick access to them (four don’t work anymore) I still wanted to be able to remove them should I need one, but I didn’t need to have a charging system built in. The two challenges were working out a removable mounting system, and hiding the cables of the older none-wireless controllers.
      In the end it’s quite a basic construction I built with stuff I already had. The board is a 3.5mm sheet of ply I had left over, and two strips of 25mm timber around the edges to move the board away from the wall to give space to put the cables. I core drilled holes behind the controllers with cables, big enough for the port adapters. I then lined the back with a rubble bag to create a pocket for all the cables to store without dropping out. I hung it with a couple of adjustable canopy mounts.
      To attach the controllers I used Command Strip Velcro picture strips. I trimmed them down to suit each controller.
      The video showed a work in progress, and it’s now complete with a few other controllers beneath it on Cableguys stands. I love it. I’m always staring at it as every controller tells a story of my gaming. It’s art to me, and something that is personal and possibly unique.
