    I pre-ordered it immediately. I have an NSO N64 controller, but I didn’t want to have to buy another for my partner to use, since they’re only realistically available overpriced on eBay these days, and I also wanted one I could be a bit rougher with playing Mario Party. This is the perfect solution.

      Same, someone shared it was available for pre-order in a group and I pre-ordered right then and there, and purchased a broken OEM N64 controller. It's been embarrassing Nintendo has NEVER been able to stock the NSO N64 controller. Removing my CC information from Nintendo and officially giving up on trying to buy the N64 from Nintendo after over a year of waiting or just missing it in stock.

    Sometimes with the older membranes, if you rub a bit of plain old paper on the connecting element, it will just gently buff the surface and get the button working like new again. Sometimes if the membrane is placed back even slightly differently it causes issues as you’ll see a smoother ‘strip’ on the disk where it’s been pressed against the circuit for all those years. It’s not fool proof but works a surprising amount of times.

    I worked at a thrift store for a while, and somebody donated an N64 controller with an obliterated cable (I assume a dog got a hold of it) and a not terrible, but not great thumbstick. Fun Fact: One N64 game was released with corrupted, glitched music, with lots of Midi errors, corrupted instrument samples and more.
    It's called Donald Duck Goin Quackers, which is actually a port of the Dreamcast/PC version (that actually has some great, underrated music!), but has a few original songs that to this day are not as audible as they should be.
    The game's TCRF article explains a lot of the music errors. It's crazy!

  • @RAHelllord
    @RAHelllord ปีที่แล้ว +4

    13:20 one small correction here for the feel, the throw values of the 8bitdo stick and the original n64 stick aren't quite the same for the lower values. There is a teeny tiny deadzone on the 8bitdo that isn't present on the original stick, which makes moving at lower values slightly off from what it would be on an original one. However the deadzone is significantly smaller than on other switch controllers (even the pro) so you can actually move slowly with less stick movement than on the pro controllers. Which will also result in it feeling different since less stick movement will already provide ingame movement.
    Personally this is currently the best third-party stick for N64 I've tried. It's not as "perfect" for fine, minimal movements as a pristine original N64 stick but it's still much better in that area than any other replacement, be it a Tribute64, a GC controller / stick, or a Pro controller.
    If you have an N64 controller with a broken or worn out stick absolutely consider getting this kit. Either only the stick if you want to keep it wired or go the whole mile and combine it with a blueretro adapter.
    Those are objectively the currently best solution to get them working again and have a stick you can use on stuff like Mario Party without any concern for breaking them.

    12:55 Unfortunately... There is something wrong with the new thumbstick, and it's the octagonal gates, because the N64 controller has a non-perfect octagonal gate, while the new one is a perfect octagon, like a Gamecube Controller. This messes more than it should with the inputs.

    • @dgamefather
      @dgamefather ปีที่แล้ว +5

    • @gcolombelli
      @gcolombelli 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Have you actually checked that? At least when using the 8bitdo stick modules with a Nintendo controller PCB on the N64 it looks a lot more "square" than octogonal, my controllers with refurbished Nintendo style sticks give more octogonal shaped inputs than the 8bitdo.
      Note the physical shape of the gate doesn't necessarily map directly to the actual registered inputs due to things like value range, linearity and if there's any processing being done by the "smart" embedded electronics to make the Hall Effect sensors work with a controller expecting data from an optical encoder (which are pairs of digital pulses for each direction, instead of varying voltages). Also, the way N64 games deal with analog inputs is a bit messy...
      Cheap clone controllers will usually report a +/-127 range, original Nintendo controllers when new and tight will cap somewhere around 80~85 IIRC, most stuff designed for use in PCs will also have a +/-127 range and may need some mapping/scaling to adjust sensitivity to something sensible on a N64 emulator.
      My main worry is that the range of the 8bitdo may not be enough for some games, but I'm not a speedrunner and I don't know specifics of many games. What I could get is +/- 80 for dead on X/Y directions and +/- 67 on the diagonals, not sure if that's enough for all games or it will cause issues on some games.

    It doesn't necessarily come with the thumbstick. I did the mod and used some thumbstick replacements I got off of eBay. That also works. But I think 8Bitdos thumbsticks are better and not even more expensive. So if you don't already have replacement sticks, just get the ones from 8Bitdo. I think they're the best deal.
    I think when it comes to the Z-button it depends on how well its board fits onto the back of the thumbstick. I did two mods, one is perfectly fine and the other one is slightly harder to press. I think it's a case by case situation and depends on how well it fits together with the back of the thumbstick.
    It's a fun mod, but it's definitely not an cheap option. I liked doing the mod and I wanted some fancier looking controllers instead of the grey one. So that's why I liked it so much. If you have to buy a controller first, I think I'd rather recommend the official controller.
    Also consider if you're thinking long term... it might be easier to get replacement parts for the original controller in the long run. The new controller from Nintendo is a bit different afaik which might make it more difficult to maintain in the future. Just as a thought.

    13:20 I highly doubt it's just "how the N64 feels". The thing with the N64 and perhaps especially Mario 64, is you have total control, it really uses every degree of movement so you can make some incredibly precise movements. I'm guessing this replacement stick acts like other replacements do, they tend to snap to the 4 main directions as well as the corners, the original control stick doesn't do so. That's why you feel something is slightly off, switch to an official controller in good condition and you'll notice the difference.

      @@omegasiferx100 Yeah, that's been my experience for most GCN N64 sticks too. I was hoping 8Bitdo would have found a better way though.
      There actually is a cool mod you can do to the $10 GCN sticks that make them have almost the same level of sensitivity as the original sticks, but it is kind of intense. But I have done it successfully about four times.
      I've got one of these 8Bitdo controllers ordered, and I'll make a video testing the stick. If it is as bad as the other $10 GCN sticks, maybe I'll make a custom stick mod for this controller too.

    This feels similar to when I bought a Gameboy color themed joycon shell. I thought about getting new set of joycons but then realized I could by a used set online cuz the shell kit came with new buttons and a new set of analog sticks was like $5. In total, spent Half the cost in Total compared to the cost of a brand new joycon set.

    The worst part of the Switch Online N64 controller is not that you need a Switch Online subscription to even buy it but that it can be connected to your PC via Bluetooth but it might be recognized buy an emulator but you can’t actually map any of the buttons to the emulator. Nintendo apparently did this on purpose because they extremely hate emulation. It’s weird though because I own the NES Switch Online controllers and they work on emulators via my PC perfectly fine 😂.

    Hey Wulff and anyone else reading this, I was in NY today and went to the Nintendo Store and you can actually buy the N64 controller there! You have to ask for it and still have to be a NSO member. They’ll ask you to sign in to your account on your phone and show it to them but after that you’re good. I still got the receipt too. Please pin!

    Regarding the way it’s recognized by the Switch; Maybe you can put it into D-input mode and sync it to a 8BitDo USB adapter so it’ll be recognized as a Pro Controller?

    I preordered those immediately when they became available. Thanks to the blueretro I can also still use those controllers on an actual N64. No regrets. It's the perfect solution to Nintendo's stupid attitude of deciding if you're worth it to buy the stupid controller in the first place.

    Idk about the bit where you can't buy the NSO controllers at Nintendo NY. I literally went there for the Mario movie event (they had those Mario shoe replicas on display) and they actually DID have the NSO controllers available to buy. I picked up the N64 controller there on impulse knowing they sell out online very quickly lol. They just needa verify your NSO subscription is all but it takes very little time.

    Honestly, the N64 controller is best used for games like Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie, Sin & Punishment, Paper Mario, Star Fox 64, Zelda (both), Goldeneye/Perfect Dark... You know, the games that fully utilize the C buttons for many aspects of the gameplay besides camera controls. The controller is the whole reason n64 emulation is awkward. Always need to reconfigure the controls to make it work for a Pro Controller, and the Switch doesn't even let you have that luxury (at least not in a convenient sense).
    I may look into this for getting a second N64 controller for switch.
