This controller is great for retro games. There's something about that form factor in comparison to more modern designs.

It is an excellent controller. One thing worth mentioning is that it is one of the few controllers that Analogue guarantees to work with the Pocket Dock, and it works very well for that purpose. It also packs flat and is easier to transport in smaller bags. If you stack them inverted on top of each other, they can protect each other while taking up about the same space as an Xbox One controller or similar. It works fairly well with the Steam Deck as well, but it does require some fiddling with it because it can accept so many types of input. If you enable the A-B swap, it will automatically reconfigure most controls to the printed layout on the controller. If not, you can always move things around using Steams excellent controller interface. Anyways, that's enough obscure details. Nice review. I hope this helps someone.
    Also, get well soon TD.

Can confirm. These controllers are great! Got a Joker combo, I.E. a purple and a green SN30 Pro (I'm a sucker for any colorful translucent gaming gear), and they work great with my Retrobat hard drive, and now my Retropie. Played hours of Sega Genesis Starflight and loved every minute of it...

ooh Same here! If I'm using the sticks, I go back and forth on preferring the sn30 pro2 or the proController on my switch. For a D-pad, the sn30pro2 is hands down the better choice. I did just pick up the 8bitdo lite (no sticks) for nintendo switch online games and it is GREAT for Tetris and Mario 3.

Sadly my SN30 Pro +'s rechargeable batteries decided to die on me. Ended up having to buy those rechargeable AA batteries which is still and actually an okay replacement. Been using it for more than 2 years now with modified joysticks since the old one melted out due to sweat I guess.
Edit: I think I have the non-2 version. Maybe they upgraded the batteries on the newer ones?

Patrick, if you don't mind it, you can use the SN30 wired too, I do with my switch. No charging to worry about and seems to have less latency, not that there was much to begin with but less accidental hiccups from Bluetooth. I removed the rechargeable battery pack from both of mine, makes them lighter for longer sessions that way too.

Hopefully 8Bitdo will release a 2.4g version of this controller with minimal latency, since the blue tooth version has just a bit too much Looks like I'll have to settle for the Wired USB SN30 Pro(GameBoy version) instead for the time being. 8Bitdo has such a confusing and weird mix matching line of controllers.
They also have the SN30 2.4g wireless snes controller, which would of been perfect, but it only works with the original SNES and not Switch. Won't even bother with what Retro-Bit has. their controllers are usually second rate, with the exception of their 6 button genesis clone controller which is an easy 10/10.

I love the look and feel of this controller but was completely let down by the D-Pad, which erroneously inserts up or down inputs into my left and right inputs if pressed even slightly off-centre, particularly when switching between them quickly. This was such a common issue for this model that there are several guides on how to internally mod it (with tape or page protector circle stickers) to correct these false inputs. I eventually resorted to the mod, which was mostly successful in correcting the inputs, with the expense that pressing the DPad is quite a lot more firm than it was originally. Resultingly, this controller only tends to get used when I travel and want something small but full-featured to pack away. To be honest, I find the DPad on the Xbox Series Controller to be a lot better, even though it's not a "classic" style controller. I now use an actual OG SNES controller connected to a low-latency daemonbite adapter for classic style input... it's not wireless, but it's hard to beat the originals. Or, if I really want wireless, I reach for the 8bitDo M30 2.4ghz model - this is more a Saturn clone type of controller, and having 6 buttons feels a bit a strange for SNES type games, but otherwise has performed faultlessly and with very low latency for me.

I myself am a fan of retro videogames, so I bought an 8Bitdo SN30 Pro+ gamepad controller 4 years ago, and I have not regretted the purchase.
I also like the D-Pad, the two analog sticks and the two pairs of trigger buttons on this retro-style controller. 😃
I've played through a bunch of Sonic rom hacks and an indie game (Ori and the Will of the Wisps), it was great to play with that controller. 😊
I am planning to buy a wired version of the newer variant called SN30 Pro 2. 🙂

This controller is great. Very responsive and perfect for old school games. My only complaints are the Y and A buttons are a little stretched outwards. Which is noticeable when playing for example MegaMan X when charging your charge shot and dash jumping. And the analogs should not be there. I tried them for modern games and this controller is not meant for that at all. Other than that this controller feels and plays premium. I love it

I have the older SN30 Pro that looks just like the SNES controllers, and it's a shame they still don't offer that version as well. I'm guessing because they got sued since I can't find the SFC version either. I should have bought more of them when they still had them for sale. Regardless, it's excellent. I might even say the sticks are better than the official Switch Pro controller, and obviously... the D-Pad is perfect.

It's an excellent controller. I ordered one of these and the NSO Snes controller at the same time, specifically since reddit and tiktok have a huge audience of anti-8bitdo commenters that keep saying 8bitdo controllers are junk. (Which I don't get - I own one of almost everything they'd ever made and it's all been quality hardware.)
I'm still fascinated that people think the NSO controller is better. They got the dpad completely wrong and it doesn't feel like the original SNES pads at all. Meanwhile the 8bitdo, while not a perfect replica either, gets much closer and just feels better to use in the dpad department. Also the buttons feel better as well - The NSO pad is mushy and weird. They even both have equal levels of "accidental diagonals".
The 8bitdo definitely wins for me.

This form factor actually makes for a compelling "portable/handheld" experience if used with a phone. I remember when 5-inch phones were apparently too large in the early-mid 2010s and at that time a lot of joypad makers got one of those small-sized joypads that included compact phone holders and generally had the base arrangement of buttons (Samsung Gamepad, anyone?)
Now that Android handheld consoles are a thing, I'm a bit surprised that people who don't use these only recommend one of those bulky regular console joypads when smaller (But not tiny like the Zero/Micro/Lite) pads can actually fit with the phone itself in a small pouch. I had the N30 Pro back in 2017 (When the Switch support was just rolling out) Of course the D-pad was an infamous issue but it otherwise was comfortable to hold.

This controller is perfect! The only thing I HATE about it is the pc software. It doesn’t recognise the controller so you can’t use it to do for example button mapping. There are a lot of topics on forums about this issue and it still isn’t solved. Support is very bad

I've had one for a while. I like it a lot. I use it at work. My only gripe is CODM doesn't support it lol

Got the SF30 Pro ages ago, and it's one of my favourite controllers of all time. That said, the lag with my Thinkpadd is noticeably, so much so that I needed to plug it in to properly play Hollow Knight. Maybe they've improved it on the later models, who knows. Honestly, I'll probably pick up the transparent green one anyway, because it's transparent green.

Omg I'm finally ahead of the curve on something great compared to you TD! I've been using the 8BitDo SN30 Pro+ though, because I like the added grip handles and it combines one more classic console aspect to it. The feel of Playstation 1 with its grip, D-pad, dual stick layout. I also have the Gameboy colorway because its the best one, and I have the all black. Thinking about getting the SNES colorway that has the purple buttons too. Got them for my Switch and ecstatic that I did. Over 2 years of heavy use on both, and neither have developed stick drift, or any issue!

I got me the 8bitdo M30 not to long ago. Basically it's a Genesis/Saturn style sega 6 button controller layout but with a couple of added shoulder buttons. No analog sticks and shares the issue with this that it doesn't have analog triggers. But it's got the killer dpad so it's great for fighters and platformers. Personally always thought the sega controllers were way better than the nintendo ones. It was a big part of why I was more into sega systems. I had both but liked the feel of playing on sega controllers more. That continued on. It's why I played more xbox than playstation.

If the X and Y buttons were white it would be a neat reference to the super game boy controller.

Yes yes yes this is just making this so much easier to choose. Looking to go for tomb raider but don't really like the Xbox layout.

Love the controller, I just wish 8bitdo would re-release/put back into production the SN/SF30 Pro controllers that much more faithfully resemble the SNES and Super Famicom controllers.
I've heard conflicting reports about why that is. I've heard that it is "too close" to the design that Nintendo sent a C&D to them. Partly makes sense as this is around the release time of the officical Super NES NSO controllers. Another I've heard is that it simply ran it's course and 8bitdo stopped manufacturing that particular model(s) of the 30 pro.

I'm mixed on the sticks. Symmetrical sticks are a no go for me. It isn't a preference. Controllers like the Dual sense cause a great deal of physical pain even in short play sessions. However with retro games, I don't want the dpad to be in the lower left. However HOWEVER, there are a lot of retro game platforms where a stick in required (Dream cast, game cube, ps2). For me, and I stress for me, any controller that tries to do everything retro will fail. There is going to be an unacceptable compromise. This controller is a nice effort, but I'm sticking (no pun intended) to using multiple controllers for different uses.

I’m not a fan of the thumbsticks, they always seem to get in the way. I ended up buying some ps4 sticks that fit the stick boxes, cut the tops off, and sanded them so that they would fit in the shell. They’re more like gamecube c-sticks now and they’re perfect.
