Just get Deadpool to retcon this. He can break the fourth wall so he can find a stupidly funny way to retcon this by forcing the writers at gunpoint to get Peter and MJ back together.

Of all the badly written moments shown here, for some reason the one where Peter breaks into the Baxter Building and tries to steal tech from the Fantastic Four is what actually got me upset. You'd think that Peter could simply explain to his oldest friends in the superhero community that him and MJ were trapped in a parallel dimension, they built a transporter to take them home but only Peter got through, and now he needs their help to rebuild it so he can get MJ back, and you'd also think that the Fantastic Four would gladly accept in a heartbeat since they hop between dimensions about as often as you and I go to the grocery store. Instead, Peter stealing their tech and a fight breaking out between the two feels as contrived as how in One More Day when apparently no one in the Marvel Universe could figure out how to heal Aunt May's bullet wound, and it angers me just as much.

    • @maxacorn

I agree. I mean, Peter and the ff are as close to family as you gonna get. Reed saved aunt May's life during the gathering of five. He's Franklin's favorite hero. Ex-DC reader here. I gave up on comics after Heroes in Crisis since Wally West was my favorite character since my childhood. It broke me. After years of him being retconned out of existence and then brought back only to be dragged through the mud and subsequently have his character thoroughly assassinated, I raged. I raged against the dying of the light and then... I simply quit caring. I know that now Wally is "better" and "fixed" now, but HiC was the moment when it finally dawned on me that comics (modern ones namely) didn't matter to me anymore. These days I read my older Flash comics/stories and cherish better times.
I can feel what Spiderman fans are going through. For every step forward, there's a mandate, editorial decree, biased EiCs, or what have you that seem to constantly get off on pummeling fan favorites into the dirt.

10:48 How in the world is this a thing??!! Speaking as guy who did not grow up with the OG Spider-Man comics in the 60's, my baseline understanding of Spider-Man has always been of him married to MJ.
I grew up in a time where MJ was either his wife or defecto love interest and anytime I see Peter with someone else it legitimately feels revolting. I felt this so strongly that One More Day infuriated me even though I had never read a Spider-Man comic in my life and only heard about it through the internet years after the fact. I was a layman Spider-Man fan, all my familiarity came from movies, tv shows, and random tidbits I read online and in encyclopedias. But even with my lack of direct knowledge, I still felt like Peter and MJ should be married and anything short of that felt (and still does feel) wrong.
I'm sure I can't be the only one to feel this way either, I've seen younger and older fans alike express the same sentiment. MJ and Peter being together was so integral to Spider-Man that when I started reading the comics for the first time, they never felt _right_ until Nick Spencer's run when he put them together again. It always felt like something was missing but then that run was when I was finally like "Oh, this is what a Spider-man comic SHOULD feel like". It was the moment the comics finally felt like the best Spider-Man movies and tv shows I had watched.
Look, this is just my experience as a relatively young guy when it comes to Spider-Man. Marvel's Editorial staff feel differently because they grew up in a different time, when Peter was not married to Mary Jane. Their baseline understanding of the character is therefore totally different. They likely find him unrelatable and unfamiliar as a married man because that's not _their_ Spider-Man.
But for every kid who grew up with Spider-Man post-1987, Peter being married to MJ is *our* Spider-Man. That's such an integral part of the character that something feels missing if MJ isn't there. That aspect of Peter's life really represents maturity and stability to us. Like when you're a kid, you don't exactly related to Spider-Man in terms of his role in society. You aren't in collage, you don't have a day job, you're not even in high school. But you still loved Spider-Man because he was this aspirational figure and you wanted to be like him.
And I'm not going to lie to you, seeing a guy who's happily married is aspirational even as a kid. That means you're successful, it means you're stable. It felt like Peter had his life together and that was really comforting to kids because they, even more than adults, want stability in their lives. We wanted the adult figures in our lives to be dependable, we didn't want it to change. Seeing Peter and MJ's marriage dissolve felt like mom and dad getting divorced. That's a pretty extreme comparison but it conveys the sentiment because MJ and Peter's break-up was an attack on the stability kids felt in Spider-Man and the trust we had in the character and his world.
I'll conclude with this: that trust matters to the reader, that stability matters. When you see a hero, you want to see someone you aspire to be and no one aspires to be a hero more than kids which is why I think so many kids grew up seeing Mary Jane as Peter's soulmate. Even now, 20 years after One More Day, we all still yearn to return for MJ to be Peter's soulmate again and that includes kids who were born after One More Day even happened! Peter's marriage to MJ felt that right, you want that to be the current reality even if you never experienced it in the first place!
Marvel's Editorials need to understand how much this relationship means to readers and how much it does for Peter Parker's story and character. It represents maturity. It represents stability. It represents success and it represents _happiness._ Are all those not qualities of a hero? They are and it's why readers want this marriage so badly, because it encapsulates Spider-Man's heroism in a way few other story elements can. That's certainly why I want Peter and MJ to be married again, and I'd wager that's why other Spidey fans feel the same way.

Spider-Man's status quo basically just continuously reverts to a BND-like status quo. If Pete and MJ won't be together, I do wish they'd just kinda gently write her off. Jut say she's pursuing more acting roles or something (what does she even do anymore? Other than yell at Peter about how she has kids now, I mean). From there, let Peter just have a relationship. Once this run is wrapped, let him be normal Peter a little more, not weirdly aggressive and mopey. Develop him and Felicia, because I forget they're even together tbh. His classic villains seem just kinda thrown in, and then we get random magic/supernatural/mystical stuff thrown in with Rabin and the Limbo stories, I don't really feel like those are well developed. Idk everything about this run just feels really haphazard to me.

They could literally do a focus on his story, get his family, get his kid, you can do so much story with spiderman and his kid also having similar powers, training the kid to be a hero too, growing to the point where they "pass the torch" and now there's new and old villians to explore and it's just good fun for old and new generations alike.
It's so rediculous how keeping Spider-man single is a good idea when they could be making so much more by exploring them getting a family. Peter is suppose to be a relatable character going through hardship and making success in it. A shining beacon, but all I see here is just disappointment and a reason to never try because Spider-man never get's his W in these comics.

Though probably helped that they were the ones being released at the time when i really got into comics again after a few years away. You are right that the earlier stuff in that run is the strongest, but i enjoy all of it. Really loved the whole mystical nature of the spider-man, with the stories about the first spider-man and stuff. But I know that's a divisive opinion. I grew up reading the silver and bronze age Superman comics, so i love when comics get really weird. I kinda wish Marvel had the balls to do that in a movie. I've been around comics long enough to know comics will not die because Spider-Man hasn't been good lately, but things do have to change. Little kids like to watch a hamster on a wheel for a little while but watching something you like running in circles with no real goal gets boring. Spidey has been running with no goal for far too long, it needs to stop because if you think watching him living married life can get stale try watching him live the same repetitive cycle and not learning anything from it.

My issue with "modern" Marvel (well before the current crap), was they stopped treating them like actual people. From the 60's to probably the late 90's, Peter went to high school, went to college, graduated, lost his girlfriend, got a job, found a new girlfriend, got married, had emotional breakdowns, etc etc... and most of the stories somewhat take place in a timeline, with a degree of continuity. Sure, they lacked consistency, but there was at least a feeling the characters were getting older, character's that died were remembered, events that took place in the past impacted later titles, with either villains returning or leaving some sort of impact.
But around 2000 when Spider-Man came out in theatres, all the characters in Marvel started to become more like The Simpsons. They stopped aging. Their timelines stand still, everything/everyone becomes a prop, dead characters come back or they reboot comic titles. Everything starts to become far more commercial.
My other big issue is just the quality of art. It's proportionally wrong, the heads and facing are so inconsistent. MJ's eyes aren't even lined up correctly in that "Kiddos!" image.

No point in reading something I haven't really enjoyed since the first arc that I know is just going to make me angry. Dang, I don't like the modern run at all but I'm not a super hardcore Spidey fan so as upset as I am, it doesn't feel like the end of the world.
That being said, I completely empathize with the the pain and suffering expressed by diehard Spidey fans, it was the exact same pain and suffering I experienced when I saw the Last Jedi, a pain that has dulled but is still ever present in the disappointing reality that is modern Star Wars.
Fans of all franchises deserve better, we just want to read/watch/play things that are enjoyable, it's so cruel and malicious when creators deliberate make something they know fans will dislike. Like would you want to deliberately make your readers/viewers sad and upset? Like that's just being mean, it's how bullies act.

  • @MorlockArts

It's a shame Zeb's been getting so much hate, his run on Hellions was one of the best comics of the last decade as far as I'm concerned. I'm hoping this MJ plot is being done to finally resolve the marriage nonsense, tie in the teases about Peter's soul from the previous run, the kids (which we now know AREN'T MJ's biological children) turn out to be some kind of Mephisto scheme, and have the resolution be some kind of fake out; Peter gets wife MJ back but Aunt May finally dies for real. We've seen Spidey and Osborn almost grow to being friends since his turn to good, and I think a really impactful way to upset that would be to call back to the Mayday twist from the end of the Clone Saga, reveal that Norman's been keeping the baby's out there in a stasis tube or something, and that's what Mephisto's been really after all along. You end up with a sort of factory reset of the series, Married Peter and MJ with a toddler, a return to an evil or maybe just a guilty Norman, and a new Spider-Girl comic set in the future after so long of not having one.

As for who I'd like to see take over Amazing Spider-Man, I would love to see Patrick Gleason write & draw. He's co-written the best modern Superman runs of all time and his issues of Spider-Man Beyond were the best of that arc. The only way I can see Tom Taylor on ASM is if editorial has a tight leash on him. I like most of Tom's writing but sometimes it can dive straight into preaching territory. I think Jed MacKay would also be another great choice. His Moon Knight and Doctor Strange runs are both really good. And of course, Chip Zdarsky on ASM would be the dream.
As for artists, Carlos Gomez would be a great choice for ASM. His work on Amazing Mary Jane and Xterminators was great and he's PeteMJ for life. Gleason would also be great. I feel like Marvel has underutilized Gleason ever since they brought him over from DC so I think it would be great to see him draw more books than be wasted on variant covers. Carmen Carnero would also be a great choice. It'd be cool to see more female artists on bigger name books like ASM. And she's drawn a few issues of Miles' book back in 2019. So, she'd be perfect.
And, yeah. Making ASM a monthly title would absolutely be beneficial for the artists.

I've been reading Spider-Man comics for 37 years. Literally. I remember going to the local apothecary with my mother when I was little. I used to get pneumonia every bloody year until I was in high school. We'd go to pick up my prescriptions and my mother would let me get $5 in comic books. Amazing, Spectacular, and Web were all running so I'd grab 2 or 3 months worth of them which usually wiped out my $5 bucks (9 comics, $0.65-$0.75 each) and I'd read them over the course of the week I was out of school. I was a pretty avid collector from 12-25, then comics themselves hit a wall, even though there were still a ton of exceptional titles out. They had just nailed it with the two Secret War runs along with the Infinity Sagas where they could just tie titles into those and they would sell a million+ copies during a *bad* month. Obviously that couldn't keep up, but that drain, the one that almost bankrupt Marvel and every subsidiary they owned, was nothing like it is now.
Before there were literally too many great stories to keep up with unless you could afford $300 or so a month. That was a *LOT* of money for a kid-young adult in the '90s making it impossible for most people to stay current, they overextended themselves horribly bad, and even though *_most_* of the stories were good, they were often just too hard to follow. Even Secret Wars 2 had something nuts like 85 critical tie in comics along with the 12 SW comics. That's nuts, and it only got more expansive as time went on. *Now* it's like they simply can't find good writers. Lol, yes, there grammar and spelling may be exceptional, but their story telling ability just isn't up to par with the _decent_ fill-in writers from the 60's, 70's and 80's, never mind the full time mainstays. I'm a pretty good writer. I wrote for a local paper in a small city of about 125K. I've had a few things published in fantasy mags...all before I was 20. I'm a far better writer now. That does not mean I would make a good Spider-Man writer just because I am also a fan. SO when I say that Jeb is not telling the best stories, it's not an insult to his writing skills as a whole, it is just stating that he is not all that great at telling Spider-Man stories.
The thing is, I don't know if he even wants to be. He knows what fans want but would rather catch syphilis, lose his hair and go blind than give it to them. Marvel's editors apparently feel the same way. Lol, it's like when they get on a roll that the fans like it is a fluke, an emergency meeting is called and they pivot as quickly as possible.
Now I could get into all the conspiracies about where Disney is getting all their money and why they can still push ridiculous propaganda that makes the US a far worse place to live, a far more divided place to live, a far more racist place to live than at any other time during my lifetime, but we'd be here forever. The fact of the matter is the comic is objectively worse than it was a year ago, which was objectively worse than 15 years ago, which was...well you get the gist of it I'm sure.
Now will Spidey end up with M.J.? I'm sure he will at some point. This weird phase the US entertainment industry...well just about every industry atm due to DEI pushed by the WEC and all of that nonsense will be pushed out eventually. Whether it's bc of a change in governance or...well that's probably what will end up happening due to our our of control Gini-Coefficient and no country in recorded history besides the US ever having a GC over 0.40 for two decades without one. Not Rome, not the Spanish, Portuguese, Mongols or English...every world leading empire lost their spot and/or had a change in governance leading to a shift in cultural opinions, typically reverting to attitude that were prevalent a half century or so previous to their degradation which led them to said fall from grace.
So yep, I still have faith in comics and the mythology of hope they are supposed to create. Good triumphing over evil, heroes doing the things we wish we could. Giving us dreams of the unachievable to shoot for, where failure isn't not meeting those goals, but in not trying to achieve them to begin with. A happy ending doesn't always have to be someone getting what they wanted. Sometimes it is getting what they need. Spidey and Mary-Jane may not always want one another, but for the story to work, they do *need* each other, and the sooner Marvel figures that out, the better all of us will be.

There are only two ways to undo OMD - 1) Hard reboot, akin to something as drastic as putting him back in HS (which Marvel would LOVE, they could just redo the first 100 issues over and over) or 2) Have Peter (and maybe even Otto?) uncover the work of Mephisto.
I personally would love Otto revealing his deal with Mephisto to Peter and having Peter's memory somehow jarred enough that he recalled his own deal.

I dropped this book at #24. I just couldn't anymore. Comics are already getting expensive as heck, and to have been dragged on for a year with this whole Peter/MJ/Paul stuff and Spidey stuff that was just not fun? Yeah, emphatic pass until a new team comes along. Or, better yet, a new Spidey-Office that doesn't have any standbys for One More Day.
Enjoy Renew Your Vows, Maximum Carnage is still a good junk food comic arc for me that I do go back to, Ultimate Spider-Man is a terrific run (a few hiccups not withstanding), and... honestly, it feels like anything outside of 616-universe Spidey puts me in a good place. The Sam Remi films still hold up for the most part (again, a few hiccups not withstanding), Andrew Garfield is at least a good Spider-Man in his movies, the MCU trilogy got better as it went on, and the two Spider-Verse movies put me in my happy place.

As for my thoughts on the run overall, it's not bad but it's definitely not great either. The only word I can use to describe it is mid. When it's focusing on one specific villain, like a "monster of the week" type story, that's when the run is at its best. I can admit that Wells writing villains is his strong suit (example: his Hellions run). I don't think he really understands Peter.

They're not letting Spider-Man grow as a character, that and coupled with that he's been in the same environment, with the same villains, with the SAME GOALS just... got stale. Spider-Man will always be relatable, that doesn't mean he has to be stuck at 20yos struggling to pay his rent for the past 30-40 years because thats what sells. I feel like, unless someone with some competence, with a less judgmental editorial staff, that's we can see a good Peter.
Like, Miles is in character purgatory, a lot of Spider-Men exist in JUST 616. This whole universe is a mess and this is all because Marvel is too afraid to step out their bubble and try something new for once and it's so annoying.

It's more about the gimmick than good storytelling. Even what happened to MJ in that weird dimension is just told in clip notes. It reads like a summary of a story. I've been reading Spiderman since I was a kid in mid-90's. I love Spiderman and I'm been through some bad times but this run is the absolute worst. I stopped reading after issue 900 but I kept reading about it because I want to enjoy it again. Everything I read about it just makes me hate what Wells is doing more and more. He destroyed Ben Reilly, one of my favourite characters. Slott screwed him up enough when bringing him back and that was followed by a brutal solo series but fixed with Spidergeddon. I was loving when Ben was made Spiderman again in Amazing... only to end with Wells screwing him over worse than anything else.
But thats not the worst of it. The entire characterization of Peter has been brutal. Especially getting the FF to hate him, it makes them look like terrible people. Everyone is a terrible person in this run. So Peter steals a gadget from them - you'd think that based on their own experience with the crazy nature of being a superhero they might try talking to him to see what was going on instead of being a bunch of douche bags. Peter beats on Captain America (who was being rather reasonable int he situation) and you'd think Peter might say something like Hey can you send some Avengers to help me with the important and time pressed situation I'm in. Cap should have understand, having been in equally if not more crazy situations in his life and trusting Spiderman. Nope, everyone is a complete jerk in this run.
MJ is like, I'm stuck in this dimension, may as well have kids with this guy I'm with. Maybe it's something else since that story isn't over but it's stupid.
Now he's killing Ms. Marvel. Oh good, another character I would be following if there was an ongoing series is now dead. Sure, she'll be back in a few years or whatever, everyone is eventually. I had to wait nearly a decade for Nova to come back and then barely be touched since.
Yes, I'm bitter and upset and ranting about it on youtube. Yes, I'm that guy right now. I'm self aware about it. But this is where I can express my opinion so there you have it. if you're into this run, go ahead. I think it's worse than OMD and Past Sins. At least Peter was likeable in those stories.

Dan Slott defended Zeb Wells run by saying everyone protested against Doc Ocks Superior Spider-Man but the sales were high and after they stuck the landing it became a beloved run.
So mmmaybe there's a point there. But I absolutely hate it so far.

I thought uo a crazier theory. What if Paul is actually the alternate universe's Spider Man who lost everything on his world and that is why he is acting the way he is. It's his way of teaching his other self not to make the same mistakes and maybe MJ knows this and could actually be trying to help which makes one wonder about the marage itself if it's to keep the truth hidden for now like in MGS4. Yes I know that sounds crazy and could be wrong but I just got that feeling.

Peter should have a suicidal arc cause that seems to be what marvel wants. Would make spidey more relatable with everything going on with his stories and be more endearing when he figure’s everything out

It's actually hilarious how soon after this video came out with all the praising of how DC is treating Wally West that they killed him off in the dumbest way possible.

    • @camscomicpulls
      @camscomicpulls  ปีที่แล้ว

I know what you mean but I'm willing to bet that's gonna end up being a big fake out. Wally has been through wayyy to much the last few years for them to casually kill him off that way, in my opinion. Plus Tom Taylor doesn't really strike me as someone to treat his characters in that way.

    • @InReserveProductions
      @InReserveProductions ปีที่แล้ว

@@camscomicpulls Tom Taylor absolutely is, you see the dumb ways he killed everyone in Injustice and DCeased. And as for Wally going through too much the last few years Nightwing is a perfect example of how it can always get worse. Interrupting the Kyle Higgins run to fake out kill him and start up the terrible Grayson arc. Then when he gets his identity back and Tim Seeley gets the book he gets shot in the head because Tom King wanted a dramatic story and DC thought letting him do whatever he wanted was a good idea. So we twice lost stellar writers for the character to get crappy arcs about not Nightwing. DC are determined to make dumb decisions lately, so I'll wait and see how this all turns out.

its funny you mention that, I met Ryan Stegman at Boston Fan Expo last year and he told me that a lot of fans will pitch them together on that book. It makes sense, Spider-Man has some great moments in their Venom stuff and Stegman did a great job during both Superior and Renew Your Vows

Honestly this entire run of Spider-Man its so bad it ain't even funny but just sad and depressing because I love this character and I hate he has been suffering all of this garbage, like personally for me I would rather have Peter parker and Mary Jane have there daughter Mayday parker Spider-girl alive and kicking in the mainstream marvel universe similar to what DC is doing with wally west and his family is doing amazing right now in the mainstream dc universe with wally west being a great father to his three children and a great husband to his wife Linda park which I really like and just proves to me that marvel should seriously take some notes from DC right now and apply all of these great ideas from the flash and transplant to Amazing Spider-Man would be freaking fantastic at least in my opinion, also a bonus having all the 5 super kids Jonathan Samuel Kent superboy as his little 10 year old self and Damian Wayne Robin teaming up with Wally's kids irey and Jai west is freaking amazing and proves to me that DC should seriously make a super kids book with all the kids from the dc universe would be freaking fantastic at least in my opinion.

Dan Slott and Joe Quesada ruined Spaider-man forever with the "One More Day" (OMD) & "Brand New Day" (BND) storylines from 16 years ago in 2007. The most annoying thing is they keep bringing back this talentless Corporate Hack to further the ruination of Spider-man. Even after that disastrous run in 2007, they were involved with the Marvel Spider-man cartoons. Let's face the facts "The Ultimate Spider-man" and "Marvel Spider-man" cartoons, except for a few episodes here and there was complete garbage. No one ever tried to resolve the contractual issues regarding the "Spectacular Spider-man" cartoon. For the last 13 years, Marvel Spider-man comics and cartoons have been terrible. There's no doubt about it. Slott realized he ruined Spiderman comics with OMD and BND, so he made the pitiful attempt to redeem himself with the "Renew Your Vows" 25-issue limited-run comic. Spider-man comics never recovered from OMD & BND storyline. Even the current Vol. # 6 of "The Amazing Spider-man" (TASM) is going off the rails and will probably kill off MJ. Marvel is a dead comic book company, just like DC. If a kid would come up to me and ask what comics he/she should read, I'd recommend trying Manga. I don't read Manga, but from all the TH-cam channels Manga has to be a superior company to DC and Marvel.

    • @edg4441
      @edg4441 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ryice944 I agree, but regarding comics, Spider-man is the only character I'm interested in. I read novels now as an older adult like the Reacher book series by Lee Child. Per skinning what has happened to the main characters of DC and Marvel, I'm no longer interested in following those characters. Instead, I read novels by authors like Charles Dickens, Lee Child, Timothy Zhan (before Disney voided the Legends Canon), and Edger Rice Burroughs who wrote characters like John Carter and Tarzan. So it that's what you're referring to as I stated, I agree. There's more to read out there than just the comics of DC and Marvel.
