Spider-Man: Hey kid. Wanna hear my thoughts on why I think the police are justified in profiling black people and why I believe American History X is lame after Edward’s character repents from his racial views?
You know the worse part is if he focused the story around the relationship with the kid, then revealed he may have access to a serum that could help him which is where he would have to fight Goblin for, only to go visit the kid and find out he’s not going to make it and is about to die, that would have been a legit amazing story.
I forgot where I read this, but Zach Hadel (of Smiling Friends & OneyPlays fame) once said that nobody will care if your characters are sad if we never see them happy.
This. Doesn’t help they’re ALL being mopey pieces of trash. Imagine if we started with all them chilling together, having fun and palling around (hopefully with ASM/Raimi dialogue than this), and if seeing just like news clipping about Gwen dying, Peter was trying to act like his usual self cause “That’s what she would’ve wanted and it’ll help me cope with it.” Harry reacts all super pissed and tells him that he’s never wants to see him again. MJ’s confused on why he’s like this, Pete tries to explain, they share a chuckle at his logic/maybe bad joke and then after a bit, she starts sobbing uncontrollably over the railing. Parker just walks over to her, and hugs her while he says, “Let it out. That’s good. Hey, in case you ever feel like this again, I’m here for you.” We then go to the kid’s house and just bond with the 2 with shop talk and some hero stories (minus all the nostalgia bait/references). Kid just innocently asks, “Is there anything bad about being Spider-man?” Pete’s quiet for a minute, letting all that grief and sadness hit, and finally responds, “Some days are get through. Some days, you wake up with everything hurting and no matter what, you can’t make it go away. Some days… you wonder if you’re in over head and… you’re not good enough…” Pete walks out for a minute and a scene like Webb describes happens. Reinvigorated a bit, Parker goes back in and reveals his identity and chills with him some more. After leaving, he decides to swing by MJ’s and she opens the door, seemingly in a better mood, and Peter finally lets it all out, vice versa of earlier scene. Close door, end of film. Imagine if this was like 30-40 minutes of each character reacting and trying to deal with their depression differently than just telling us “Man, I’m hella sad that Stacy’s gone.” Even we don’t see them happy the whole time, at least we’d see more of their personality reflected by a event like this than what we actually get.
Ironic how people like the director hated the mcu Spider-Man for being “too much like a teen sitcom” when this movie is pretty much a “teen social drama”
I think you just don’t get it. This is obviously the Spider-Man from the universe where Euphoria takes place. So of course it’s full of melodramatic adults playing teenagers that dress like they’re 35. Why isn’t Zendaya playing MJ? It’s because she’s already another character in this universe. It’s actually brilliant if you look at it as a euphoria fanfic instead of a Spider-Man fanfic.
Kinda ironic to complain about since spider man at its core IS low-key a teen sitcom ( and drama tbf) like your complaining about the part that makes Spiderman Spiderman
It seems like a good combination of "The Night Gwen Stacy Died" and "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man" would've been Peter going to visit a sick child after Gwen's death and trying to be the hero the kid expects him to be, perhaps a bit performatively given the situation, only to wind up hearing some of the stories that the kid has collected about him and realizing that he has managed to do a lot of good. So in the end, Peter winds up being that kid's hero and the kid winds up being a hero in his own right and unknowingly saving his idol from a dark place.
Plus this is the kind of story that a big-budget superhero movie couldn't do as it's an intimate story that's primarily devoted to character introspection. Which would have been perfect for a fan-film that doesn't have the same restrictions, they don't have to make an action-focused movie or worry about selling tickets. This could hace worked very well for a 30-60 minutes fan film
I would've imagined it to be about both Peter and the kid dealing with grief in distinct but similar ways, and the kid's questions echo Peter's current sentiments that he thinks he has no answer for, so he delivers what he believes to be a generic hopeful and heroic response as Spider-Man to lift the kid's spirits, which also turns out to be exactly what Peter needed to hear in order for him to move on and strengthen his commitment to being a hero, in a way solidifying how important Spider-Man is to not only the kid and the people of New York, but to Peter as well. But that's a good idea, so of course they didn't do it.
That’s how you adapt two storylines into one. You don’t change much of what’s already written except bridging the two together by creating a sturdy link between them.
No, but you see. The suit IS a selling point. Because this movie was made by cynical fans FOR cynical fans who only care about the superficial parts of the character.
One of my least favorite criticisms of the MCU Spiderman is that his suit is too nice and made by a billionaire. This critique doesn't work because both the Toby and Andrew suits look too nice and are also designed by billionaires. Sure in universe they aren't but I genuinely don't believe a 16 year old kid who has no sewing or cosplay skills is making either of those suits
Some Spider-Man fan films I've seen that are actually worth watching are: -Spider-Man: Power and Responsibility -Spider-Man: Back to Basics -Spider-Man: Best of Enemies -Spider-Man: Dead No More -Superior Spider-Man: Log Date One -Superior Spider-Man: My Own Worst Enemy -Spider-Man: Prom Night -A Friend Called Spider-Man -Spider-Man: Cake Day -Peter's Web -Marvel Knights: Spider-Man -The Green Goblin's Last Stand -Web of Spider-Man
Is the Green Goblin's Last Stand that really old fan film? I think i saw it around 2005/2006. But it was old even back then. I remember thinking it was pretty ambitious for a low budget film of the era. With a guy doing real stunts. Man i wish they had a better camera lol
24:07 In the original ultimate comics run they actually use this as a story, and have Kingpin trademark Spider-man and sell a bunch of merch of him just to hold over Peter's head because he's technically making him money now.
Also, Spider-man CAN sue people, but he can't ever see money for it, because he'd have to reveal his secret identity. It was the plot of a She-Hulk comic... I'm fun at parties.
I mean, into the Spider-verse also had RIPeter market himself with plushies, cereal, popsicles, and a Christmas album where he has a mental breakdown over becoming a fucking sellout, all to help finance his crime-fighting escapades, so...
When the first set of drama with the racism came out in July 2022, that was the craziest week ever. Then it got worse the following year with the grooming. It really was a case of us rooting for the underdog only for it to go horribly wrong. Even if Gavin tries to scrub it off the internet, it’s a part of his legacy forever.
I did a lot of art for the film and he promised me a copy of the film on dvd and made me pay for it and never sent it to me and just ignored me afterwards he's just a scammer.

It felt like Spiderman Lotus wanted to be an anime. Flashbacks, looking sad, sappy music, extended stunted dialogue but without the charm and charisma of one.
I don't like the MCU Spiderman because I can't stand MCU dialogue and I feel making Spiderman wealthy ruins part of his character. This is absolutely not what I wanted.
Yeah, no. I don't like the MCU and its Spider-Man (anymore) but I can guarantee that this is not the way. I want an adult Spider-Man, not a perpetual teenager. Sulking about and being moody and angsty is not how I would imagine an adult Peter. Sure, he had his mopey moments, but for the most part he kept his chin up. Angst can work, but it must be contrasted with happiness, or it won't mean anything.
@@AnomalyINCYeah. I think that's what makes Peter Parker Spider-man. He goes through a lot but still keeps his head held high. The radioactive spider didn't make him Spider-man. It was his good heart and unbreakable spirit.
It's bad that you're saying this, yes. Because they're actually good, talented actors being given bad material to work with. It's not their fault they were given this mess to work with, and I'm pretty sure they don't deserve to have their careers and livelihood slandered by you. They did their best and it was clear they were talented and trying. It's not their fault the script was awful.

@@star-rock6466except the child wasn't that much better to point out how terrible the others were. His acting was on par with everyone else in that movie, not terrible but not great either.
Wish more people understood that. Making something only because of spite is very easy to tell because that type of hatred/negative energy seeps into the media you create. It's the difference between The Boys (Comic) and The Boys (TV show)
While there have been cases of projects with spite behind them, Shrek is a good example, there's usually a creative vision behind it that stops it from going down the road of something like Lotus. In a way, the spite was converted into love for what they were doing, instead of a "this product will be MUCH better than their's" mindset.
Gavin got praised by Jon Watts for the trailer but still thought he was better. That to me just shows how much of a narcissist he is. Like, I get he doesn’t like the MCU Spidey and that’s fine, it’s not for everyone but if you think “I can do better than you!” Is beyond egotistical. Also, the fact he defended the goblin actor is… it makes me want to puke. Screw this movie and I hope to god he never does anything with Spidey again.
There was this video called “Spectacular Spider-Man BLUE” by Browntable and it had Josh Keaton’s seal of approval. What’s even funnier (at least, to me,) it’s only 3 minutes long and it’s still better than Lotus.
I'm not a huge fan of Browntable, but I do have massive respect for their clear love of what they talk about, and Spectacular Spider-Man Blue was a really good example of that!
@DarlingMissDarling How am I not using The words “Hate Watching” correctly? Also, you and your buddies are not the social media police. Hate watching is this: watching a piece of media specifically to tear it apart. You’re feeding Gavin ammo to be a better filmmaker. Had you not watch the film, he would have been forgotten.
41:35 Even as someone who's never particularly cared for Sonic, I kinda *love* Project '06 because it's not "Ugh, this was bad, I can do it so much better" it's "Damn, this was bad, if only they had the time to really polish it and clean up these rough edges is could've been good though... hey, wait, *we've* got time! We can polish it!" Truly the pinnacle of fan projects: Loving something that probably shouldn't be loved, so much you make it good (or at least better) through sheer force of will.
I think the difference is that Sonic 06 was and truly is terrible by itself, and the fan-game creator went out of his way to realize that dream that Sonic Team had for the game.
I hated just how 'nostalgia baity' it felt. I don't know how to express it, but after I saw the first promo art(suit etc.) to me something didn't sit right. It felt as if I was gonna watch a picture that would say 'THIS IS SPIDERMAN! ANY OTHER VERSION WILL BE TERRIBLE, FUCK YOU TOM HOLLAND' . Then the whole racism thing came in and I didn't see it coming. Like, I never expected THAT would kickstart the belief i people that the film won't be good...
I don't think anybody said the film itself was going to be bad because the guy was a racist. It's just that it's pretty worrying. People also talked about how egotistical the guy was. He has his name on everything and always talks highly of himself. It doesn't really affect the film, but it is pretty worrying about the quality when you've got a director that is a narcissistic asshole. Many films have failed that way, and it's not surprising people thought this guy wasn't making anything worthwhile.
Right wingers are notoriously bad at creating art. That's why so many of them switch to doing political content after their art careers fail. Misery loves company.
@@rockmangurlx4973neutral is one thing. I think they're talking about the "Miles Morales is Miles morales, Peter Parker is Spider-Man" crowd. Those wierdos aren't neutral
On one hand, i hate seeing fan projects fail deservedly or not. But some fans really need to be humbled on their interpretation of art being "objectively better". That mindset plagues all fan works, even those that were made out of genuine love. Certain fans are so up their own nostalgia that they forget what drew them to art in the first place.
Just the “I Love You” webs on the Brooklyn Bridge in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 showed a deeper connection between Peter and Gwen than all of Spider-Man Lotus
I think the ultimate test for Spider-Man fans is when they decide to make actual stories about Spider-Man, whether an official Marvel licensed work or a fanmade project. Most of them put their everything into them because, especially for fan films, that’s what they must give to make the dang thing. You can learn a lot about someone from what they make, especially Spider-Man stories. Great video, considering I’ve never actually seen the film myself (don’t wanna give Gavin any views) and my twin brother severely regrets donating to this ego stroke of a Spider-Man fan film.
Spider man is actually a good litmus test for marvel fans. He is supposed to be a stand in for comic fans who feel disenfranchised or left out so the more someone who makes a spider man anything really shows how much they notice and care about the things they read that’s not to say they’re all good but you can tell when someone is putting their heart and soul into something
The merchandising thing actually does make sense: “Oh, Spider-Man, you want some of your rightfully owed money for your likeness? Sure, just take off that mask and sign the contract!”
9:32 It's also why it worked in No Way Home; the character had been in _all three_ of the MCU Spider-Man films, and it was incredibly unexpected. Not only that, but character's death was written in such a way that it served several plot functions at the same time: it pushed Peter to a _very_ dark headspace, was done deliberately by the villain to try and break him, and ultimately provided the last bit of character growth Peter needed.
Disdain is an understatement. He would be angered on the sheer slander. It would not only be peter but also Harry too. Hus father is played by a literal pdfile, and he would have some flying words for him.
If Gavin is the actual Spider-Man character, then Spidey would have used his photography skills to gather the evidence against him and send it to Daily Bugle to expose his true color (unless if Gavin was bribed by JJ Jameson to make a movie that makes Spider-Man looked bad, like what he did with newspapers). Thus, ruining his reputation and got kicked out of the film industry.
Honestly as a fanfiction writer your praise of fan works warmed my heart so much that it took over my finger and pressed subscribe before I even noticed I did it
Spider-Man is just too much of a spectacle to do a big 2 hour fan film. It’s not a Never Hike Alone Situation where it’s not only shorter but is a fan film based on a long dormant franchise that thrives on making low budget slasher films (Friday The 13th)
Well… on an inherent level. There are advantages like not dealing with red tape or studio heads who wouldn’t know a screenplay if it gave them a paper cut. That said… yeah.
@@LOC-Ness no, im just saying that the idea of "indie is the salvation blah blah" gives some indie productions a big ego, thats what happened with spider man lotus
Kinda weird that he mentioned Team Four Star's Dragon Ball Z Abridged though since they spent so much of their time from the Cell arc onwards to the end trying to disrespect the direction of the series and constantly drag and rip into Dragon Ball Super and GT. I think a lot of their effort went towards spite and ego near the end.
@@darth_autismo not really. spider-man fans can't let go of an almost 20 something year old retcon while still giving marvel the money that enables the manchildren who write their comics to do the very things they complain about.
Very, VERY little known fact, Spidey's mask is canonicaly supposed to make his voice muffled, as it would make it harder for others to figure out his secret identity. That doesn't excuse the lack of ADR, but it makes sense.
Another good example of a fan made project that works is Kane Pixel's Backrooms. He took the base concept and used it to create a fleshed out world and introduce new elements that fit the Backrooms really well such as the Bacteria monster. Now he's going to make a feature length movie because of the success of his series. Kane has already handled his craft better than Gavin. He started out small with his first Backrooms video, created a series of videos that expanded his world over the course of nearly 2 years and now he's onto his first big movie.
@@SewerxGator The original concept of the backrooms I feel is meant to be an open-ended concept that can be twisted anyway. Kane just expanded on the concept in his own unique way the same way the marble hornets guys expanded on the original Slender Man concept, which I would argue the Backrooms massive popularity explosion is very identical to. Kane’s interpretation just happens to be the most popular and that’s what everyone has gone with
The movie isn’t green lit yet, apparently. And the general audience doesn’t know what a “back room” is or who Kane. The movie is gonna flop so hard. It’s probably gonna end up in development hell.
Yeah, im tired of people always saying that "indie is the salvation and its always better than triple AAA" No, its not always, the two type of gaming are brothers that have their qualities and flaws, no one is better than another
Or maybe consider that the fan was 18 years old and has never made a movie in his entire life. He was never gonna beat the big guys and anybody who thought so was delusional
@@EthanRom The point still stands. You want to do stuff of that size. Build yourself up to be able to do it. I know people always say “you should make what you want to make” but if you don’t have the skill and know-how make something on the same scale as this movie’s concept, you probably should hold off until you can. It’s how we got directors like Ed Wood and the guy who made Manos The Hands of Fate.
@@Butwhythough881 The thing is the big directors now likely had their stinkers back when they were growing up, but the difference was they didn't have the internet ridiculing them. This is unhealthy for the indie film making space. Indie film making is supposed to be a place to make mistakes. Try things that maybe work or maybe don't. Now we are criticising the work of an 18 year old and holding him to the same standard of big budget studios. It's incredibly dangerous to do this. If this becomes a trend, it'll turn off a lot of indie directors from even putting their work out there. Remember a lot of them do it for passion and not for monetary gain. It's easy to blast big budget movies, because we paid money to watch the movies and they owe us as fans, but to have this entitlement towards fan projects is not right
@@EthanRom First of all, don’t mix up passion and spite. That’s very to do. Second, the directors that had their “stinkers” back in the day, still received criticism and feedback and bettered themselves. Ed Wood made a lot of bad films, that eventually did become cult classics but were panned back in the day, and didn’t care about feedback/criticism and you know what happened to him? He spent the remainder of his life making porn flicks. As a young or indie filmmaker, while you should never be fine with death threats, you should be open to criticism and constructive feedback. Gavin made a feature-length Spider-Man movie that tried to be on the same level as a big budget studio film and even had a big movie premiere for it, so naturally it’s going to be held to that standard. Also Gavin isn’t a child, he’s an adult. And it’s comments like yours that allow people to refuse to learn from mistakes. Other fan projects out there do a way better job without trying to be on the same level as the studios, and they don’t get anywhere the amount of press Lotus got. THAT is what bothers me most. Filmmaking is a competitive business if you can’t handle the heat and improve, you won’t get far.
i went to the premiere of this, and as i mention in the video i have coming out soon on that, i enjoyed the ride home talking about how bad it was more than the film itself
Anyone ever noticed the scene when Peter looks at videos of Gwen on his laptop is literally a rip-off to the laptop scene in We Bought A Zoo (2011)? RIGHT DOWN TO THE SAME SONG FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!!
Fun Fact: Stan Lee stated in at least 2 interviews (that we know of) that he never intended for Gwen Stacy to die or at least not when she did and how she did. So one of the darkest and most iconic moments in comics history was literally never even *meant* to happen in the first place. I say all that to say.... I agree with his take on "The Death of Gwen Stacy isn't really possible to adapt properly as a singular movie." ....so just do what Spectacular Spider-Man and the Ultimate Spider-Man Comics did and keep her alive and tell a story based around her that way.
I would like to point out something similar to what Cosmonaut Variety Hour said in his video regarding Lotus: If you have a dream project that you think is worth it, it is probably also worth waiting for it. What I mean is you should just do enough projects so you can gain more experience, knowledge, and understanding of the art medium you are working with, so you can later use that experience to make your dream project the best it can be. If you start with your dream project, not only you are risking making a product that is not good, but if you decide to continue your career, it will not matter how much experience you have gained, you will never be able to go back to your project (unless you get a shot at a remake, or you are George Lucas). I'll admit... I would like to write books, but so far I've barely done anything to improve or work for that matter. However, I noticed that I'm focusing too much on a project that just... will not turn out to be good with my level of experience (too many characters, complicated world-building, not having a clear aim for the story, too ambitious).
I love what you chose as the title; "Anti-Fan", because of what Anti in such context means. Such as an Anti-Hero, being a "Hero" thats so morally questionable, out of pocket and out of the line of actual heroism, that said character makes you go "Wow... ihat's a hero?" or "Hey that aint no Hero...", similar to Anti-Villain, which is a "Villain" that goes on the same of making you go: "Wow, that's the villain?" or "That aint no Villain!...". Apparently a Hero/Villain, or supposely one. Yet, are quite the opposite. In similar fashion: Anti-Fan! Since Lotus was heavily marked as being made by fans, for fans. Yet, this movie really manages to go so out of the line at literally everything inside and related to it, that it makes any actual fan go "Wow... that ain't no fan-for-fan project..." Supposely a movie for a fan, made by a fan. Yet, at the same time it isn't. Quite the clever title.
Anti-fans are known for ruining the reputation of any media and its fanbase just to be better for themselves. They are just equally as bad as the toxic fandoms.

Glad I stumbled on this channel, I really wanted Lotus to be something more than it turned out to be. It sucks that the whole experience not only did viewers but actors are uncomfortable. But I think Lotus needed to fail to remind others what passionate art looks like, I think you explained that well.
If it were me writing this movie, or at least if the kid asked about “The Girl On The Bridge” in some other adaptation of “The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man,” it should’ve been Peter simply saying, “She died, and I felt really terrible about it, sometimes I still do.” But the kid simply says “I’m sorry, Spider-Man,” and instead of trauma-dumping on this poor terminally-ill child, Spidey says “That’s the hardest part of the job, sometimes you can’t always save everyone.” A callback to one of the most emotional lines from Into The Spiderverse that yes, highlights Peter’s heartbreak, but the kid still completely understands his problems, because Spidey’s only one guy, and one guy can’t solve every problem. And Peter feels a bit reassured that the kid still looks up to him, even when acknowledging that Spider-Man can’t save every person.
I saw this video in my recs, thought "man this was really good! I wonder what other videos this guy has made", and was shocked when I only saw that you've made 4 videos so far. The quality of this video is genuinely impressive. Good stuff.
If I had to write the story of Spider-Man: Lotus and had to keep the similar story elements, I would’ve had Green Goblin still be alive, and Spider-Man would stop at nothing to try and hunt him down to kill him, until he was called in to visit the kid that would’ve helped him realise he’s going down a dark path and that Gwen wouldn’t want that, it’ll be then where Goblin would strike again and spidey would stop him without killing him and of course there would be emotional beats to it. Obviously this movie was on a budget but I think that they could’ve done that using clever tricks and it would’ve complimented the story a lot more
I turned this on randomly last night and I saw Kirby's Café. Dude... LOL TYSM for the beautiful words. I agree, if you make any sort of fan based project, do it for the love and not driven by a vendetta.
No way this is just your second full video essay bro, the polish on this video essay had me thinking you’ve been doing this for years 😭. Keep up the great work
The dangers of the "fan mentality" and "fan material" are, very typically, it becomes way over confident of a certain, specific interpretation of the "source material" that they PREFER, and often mistake their own preference as an objective, definitive, and prescriptive standard on how the "source material" should be viewed. (... but in reality, even the "source material" itself switches back and forth between different portrayals and its interpretations. Thus, what "being true to source material" actually means, is itself a contentious issue) In short, it's basically just the toxicity of "fan forums" coming alive in some other media form. Everyone has a certain, preferred view and interpretation, and they start fighting over who has the "correct" view of the "source material." So they go into diatribes about why everyone else's view on the "source material" is wrong, and how their interpretation is the "correct" one, and therefore how they are the most authentic and superior among true fanbois, and ultimately, should be able to gatekeep. Ah, the dark side of "fan culture." You see these stuff everyday in any medium that has a "fandom." Star Wars fans, Trekkies, LotR fans, Kaiju movie fans.. video game fans.. animation/manga fans (anyone remember the '90s and the fekkin' 'Evangelion debates'?) ... etc. etc. So, this film, is basically the culmination of that negative side of 'fan culture.' A self-expression of the fandom done in the wrong way.
Legend: a dragon ball tale is similar to sonic 06, the creator Agent Mystery Meat was dissatisfied with how vegeta always lost to a main villain and wanted to see what would happen if he was given more spotlight against a big foe. But there was not an ounce of malice in the fan film, there are references and cameos. The film was dedicated to making vegeta better than toriyama, it was a love letter to dragon ball as a franchise.

This is much better than Cosmonaut Variety Hour's review. He legit started his review out by saying he hates fan works and pretty much wrote off anything not made by the big studios. Your review is automatically better by virtue of not using your platform to devalue fan works in general.
I’m someone who used to not vibe with the MCU interpretation of Spider-Man (mostly because I had high expectations that it would be the best and most accurate Spider-Man in live action). I’ve grown to appreciate and love it more over time. However, in all my years of not hating but not loving this adaptation, I never once thought “oh I bet I can do better” because that’s stupid, insane, and frankly an insult to all the passionate artists that have their own vision for what Spider-Man should be. Even as someone who loves the older incarnations better (the Raimi trilogy being a big part of why I love the character), I would rather get a new fresh take on the character that still respects the source material than a botched retelling of two of the characters best stories. Personally, I would love to see a live action Spider-Man Netflix series that goes from Freshman High school Peter to middle aged father and husband Peter Parker. Similar in style and writing to the Daredevil show. But that’s just me.
“I can do better” or even “Anyone can do that” is how we got such wonderful films like The Room and Manos The Hands of Fate. Also I heard he tried to back pedal on those statements by creating fake tweets saying that it wasn’t the case?
@jackofalltraits2145 If each season is one year of Peter's life, then it would probably be more than 20 if he were to go from freshman to middle-aged husband.
@@gazem_3211 Yeah, but then again TV shows can last a long time. This is just an unrealistic expectation I have that I know will very likely never become a reality. At the most, I just want I Spider-Man TV show (live action or animated) to go from College to Early Adult years.
People say the MCU Spider-Man films don't get Spider-Man, and okay, they certainly make deviations from the norm, for better or for worse. But I would still say they're a better rendition of Spider-Man than THIS.
I would've been fine with MCU Spider-Man if they didn't make Tom Holland's Peter rely too much on Tony Stark including making him a new suit. The suit is basically autopilot for him. That's not I how would pictured Spider-Man if they were to put him in the MCU. This is just how I feel about it.
As someone in college for film (💀) when I make my videos, if I feel the need to explicitly narrate or use dialogue to explain an emotion or what’s happening, I know I fucked up. Being told what’s going on or how to feel is never something you wanna do in a MOTION PICTURE
Fun fact! (If I'm remembering correctly) There was actually a plot in the Spider Man comics about Spider man merchandise and from what I remember it basically summed down to Kingpin buying the copyright to all of the Spider Man merchandise and him being like "You being alive helps me and brings in hundreds of thousands of dollars daily, I own you" thing
This entire movie just makes me think of when Max G was ranting about the Powerpuff Girls 2016 reboot and said "Why would you focus on the part of a superhero's life when they're not being a superhero, when UNDENIABLY the most interesting THING about superheroes...is THAT THEY'RE SUPERHEROES!!!" It's even dumber in Spider-Man's case, because we already get to see plenty of his non-superhero life in the source material alongside his superhero life. We didn't need to see an extended teen drama cut of his normal life, it's just redundant.
It’s funny how I decided to revisit Spider-Man Lotus recently out of curiosity and you upload probably one of the best videos discussing the movie. You struck a good balance of in-depth discussion and good humor. I look forward to seeing what you’ll make next.
I knew Gavin and his friends for quite some time when I was younger, he and those who surrounded him never tended to like me as I was really passionate about Tom Holland's Spider-Man. A lot of those in his corner would call others slurs by commenting one letter at a time and Gavin had (I belive jokingly) told me to take my own life when I was a teenager. There was a lot of hate for Tom Holland's Spider-Man brought on by a TH-camr Hi-Top films and so a lot of people tried to come up with their own ways to do it better. Gavin's work just like many others was not out of a place of love but of hatred so I believe that truly is why this film was not as amazing as it could have been. If it was made out of passion for the source material I believe this film would have been spectacular, but it was made out of spite. I hope that more fan-films that were made out of love can be given the spotlight in the future.
If he and his friends didn’t like you for you liking Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and using slurs, I doubt he was joking. Other than that, most of the people who are praising this film are either Raimi fanboys, toxic MCU haters, or people who claim they know the comics but have never picked one up. I think it’s funny however that Gavin’s big dream Spider-Man story to one up the MCU was a 1:1 adaptation of two comics that you can just go read and get the same amount of content but better written and much shorter. Spider-Man Monsters of Manhattan is a fan series that’s coming out and it looks like it has a great production value. We should definitely push that one into the spotlight.
At least Hi-Top had the emotional intellect and maturity to understand that it’s okay for others to like the MCU spider-man trilogy. Gavin just seems to be pretentious about it.
Wow, I'm sorry to hear that happened to you, man. As someone who likes the MCU Spidey films too, and I am not ashamed to admit it, I know how it feels. Jon Watts did his own thing with the character, and that is totally okay. I bet there's some Batman fans out there who are hating on Matt Reeves' interpretation and are shouting to the world for how much it sucked and those who like it are shills who don't understand Batman. I mean people can like what they like, you can't just blatantly tell them they're wrong. If people do that to others, then clearly they are assholes. Gavin is clearly a toxic manbaby who doesn't like change and hates anybody who has a different vision to him. There are some fans who are like this and it sucks. He clearly made this garbage movie to stick it to Jon Watts, Kevin Fiege and Marvel Studios saying "Look at this. I can do better. I know Spider-Man than you ever will." and he failed miserably.

@@rayvenkman2087LMFAOOOO THIS STRAWMAN IS ACTUALLY FUNNY.

Bro that sounds absolutely fire
Plus this is the kind of story that a big-budget superhero movie couldn't do as it's an intimate story that's primarily devoted to character introspection. Which would have been perfect for a fan-film that doesn't have the same restrictions, they don't have to make an action-focused movie or worry about selling tickets. This could hace worked very well for a 30-60 minutes fan film
🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🖊

Spider-Man merchandise happened in the ultimate universe because of King Pin. He bought the rights to Spider-Man. I love how petty it is

The merchandising thing actually does make sense: “Oh, Spider-Man, you want some of your rightfully owed money for your likeness? Sure, just take off that mask and sign the contract!”
Which exactly happens in the comics
9:32 It's also why it worked in No Way Home; the character had been in _all three_ of the MCU Spider-Man films, and it was incredibly unexpected. Not only that, but character's death was written in such a way that it served several plot functions at the same time: it pushed Peter to a _very_ dark headspace, was done deliberately by the villain to try and break him, and ultimately provided the last bit of character growth Peter needed.
Damn, ain't a universe around where Gwen gets to live unless she gets super-powers, huh?
On the subject of MCU Peter, Far From Home also told a much more compelling story involving Peter grieving the recent loss of a loved one.

I wonder how he’s never had the introspection to recognize that if Peter Parker was real, he would have disdain toward Gavin. (Given his….reputation)

He started out small with his first Backrooms video, created a series of videos that expanded his world over the course of nearly 2 years and now he's onto his first big movie.
just a shame it entirely misunderstands the concept of the backrooms
@@SewerxGator The original concept of the backrooms I feel is meant to be an open-ended concept that can be twisted anyway.
Kane just expanded on the concept in his own unique way the same way the marble hornets guys expanded on the original Slender Man concept, which I would argue the Backrooms massive popularity explosion is very identical to. Kane’s interpretation just happens to be the most popular and that’s what everyone has gone with

No, its not always, the two type of gaming are brothers that have their qualities and flaws, no one is better than another
Or maybe consider that the fan was 18 years old and has never made a movie in his entire life.

I would like to point out something similar to what Cosmonaut Variety Hour said in his video regarding Lotus:
If you have a dream project that you think is worth it, it is probably also worth waiting for it.
In similar fashion:
Anti-Fan!
Since Lotus was heavily marked as being made by fans, for fans.
Yet, this movie really manages to go so out of the line at literally everything inside and related to it, that it makes any actual fan go "Wow... that ain't no fan-for-fan project..."
Supposely a movie for a fan, made by a fan. Yet, at the same time it isn't.
Quite the clever title.
So much pathos

Well, WebbStarr, you are an odd fellow, but I must say. . . you roast a bad movie.
Thus, what "being true to source material" actually means, is itself a contentious issue)
In short, it's basically just the toxicity of "fan forums" coming alive in some other media form.
Ah, the dark side of "fan culture."
You see these stuff everyday in any medium that has a "fandom." Star Wars fans, Trekkies, LotR fans, Kaiju movie fans.. video game fans.. animation/manga fans (anyone remember the '90s and the fekkin' 'Evangelion debates'?) ... etc. etc.
So, this film, is basically the culmination of that negative side of 'fan culture.' A self-expression of the fandom done in the wrong way.
ever since sonic mania launched, fans started with the mentality of "indie always better"

Not only that, but when they do this, it gives poeple less incentive to read the Comics. It works for Anime, because:

Emo Man: The Flanderization
