I am an auto tech, and I can tell you that for the majority of wheel bearing diagnosis this method works well.
There are a few odd ones that come in usually imports Honda and Toyota specifically, that the bearing will have zero play and by that have no change in sound loaded or unloaded.
And the way to tell if it is bad is the old Airplane propeller sound.
Many years ago my wife's Acura was starting to make this prop plane sound from the front of the car, and I checked the wheels clearance to brake calipers (they were very close but not touching ), I checked the bearings for wear or play - none found, I checked CV Axle nuts preload and that was in spec.
I ended up replacing the knuckle assemblies which had the bearing pressed into it, and the noise was gone instantly.
I took the old ones to a friend and told him about the sound, and he pressed them out and cut the bearings apart and showed me the wear spots in the bearings.
Basically the case hardening starts coming off the rolling parts making little flat spots. And the Axle nut preload keeps the bearing from showing any play, yet still allowing it to make a fairly loud noise.
I asked him why would the case hardening even comes off in the first place, and he said it's little stress cracks that form in the metal when the grease dries out in the sealed bearing, and the rolling parts get too hot and the hard surface cracks because it's also brittle and cannot withstand wide temperature changes..
    My 02¢

I've got a little issue with some noise at the moment. Initially thought maybe worn tyres, but I'm inclined to think it may be a wheel bearing or two. Either way it sounds like I'm being accompanied by a Cessna in the distance when I get up to about 40mph.

    • @nathanfranks1476
      @nathanfranks1476 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@willenium2k4 Yes! That sounds eerily similar to how my wheel bearing issue presented- although I described it as a helicopter-sounding noise- maybe because I have never heard a cessna before

@@nathanfranks1476 So I've literally just rolled my trolley jack back into my garage. Jacked the car up and spun all four wheels after work this evening. Pretty sure the rears are ok. Fronts feel smooth when turning by hand, but doing the 'steering sweep' while driving home from work this evening, it seems the issue is likely pointing to the offside one. When spinning it quickly I think I can hear a tiny bit of clunking, but it's hard to tell with the ambient noise and the wind blowing in my ear. I'll order a bearing anyway and see how I get on.

This helped a ton, I turned onto a street divider (didn’t know it was there and not from the area, no signs were posted signifying no turning left) and went over it pretty bad. Tires were already decently low thread and popped both my right side tires. Paid $80 total for both tires to be replaced ($45 tire and a $35) and put them on my car myself. Ended up with a whooping sound as I accelerate or a whoowhoowhoo sound. Another slightly rough sound as well. I screwed up bad, my first ever fuck up. And that whooing sound has me in disarray. This thankfully put some ease to mind and luckily know it’s not my bearings

Great video, best explanation I've seen yet. I have had a dealer look at mine and brush it off which is frustrating (warranty work). Newer tires on a certified pre owned suv, noticeable noise from 55-60 mph, sounds like a bearing. Dealer says they checked and it must just be tires. I hate to replace a brand new set of tires with only a few thousand miles but I might have to. Texture of road changing and moving wheel doesn't change the sound. Not noticeable at other speeds.

Daughters 2014 C-Max Energi had tire noise that changed when the original 9 year old tires were rotated, front to back, with the cheaper 5 year old tires previous owner had replaced them with. The original Michelins had not, quite, gotten to the tread wear indicators but, because of age, and the Hankook were in the wear indicators all 4 were replaced with 70,000 mile Michelins. Because of radio volume, and the noise started gradually, she didn't realize how loud it had gotten. Good quality street tires tend to be quieter than cheap ones. Inflation and rotation.

Thanks so much. I'm rolling with a tire issue based on your fantastic diagnostic skills. What's interesting or telling is my tires were just rotated. I noticed the sound immediately from the front tire(s) and this was also after the mechanic said my lug nut had been crossthreaded, and my hub might be damaged. I'm calling BS on that based on the sound, and what you described. Plus, how do I know that he didn't do the thread damage himself? I've been to the shop before, purchasing a pair of tires. He was also quick to point out that my rear brakes were shot. I appreciate the diagnosis, but I wonder if he was really working an upsell back then as well. Thanks again my friend. I'll see if the shop follows up my call after driving home with the new noise.

So I actually hit a curb not too long ago pretty hard on my front right tire. After the accident, I noticed a loud humming noise coming from the tire that I hit. Its at is loudest at 62mph, but is present at 40+, and is especially heard when driving through left curves. I've gotten an alignment, tire rotation, and even made sure the wheels were balanced. I also took it to a Mavis and had them do an inspection of the wheel bearings and axles, and they said nothing was wrong. Whenever I jack the car up to test for play or spin the tires to listen for any noise coming from the bearing, I hear pretty much nothing. I'm really unsure what to do, and don't want to throw money at it in hopes of something sticking. I'm like 80% sure the noise wasn't there before the accident. What should I do?

When you say tire noise, what do you mean exactly? What is wrong with the tire? I have a 2015 Toyota tacoma that's making that exact sound, but I thought it was my cv joint. There's also grease all over that looks like it's coming from the cv joint, but I can't find any damage to the rubber. Is it possible I have 2 different problems?

You should still hear the woo woo woo sound when slowing down then it's a tire issue. Check if your tire is wearing on the corner of the tire then wheel alignment needs to be done n you can drive a few more till you buy new tires then do alignment once more. Wheel bearing noise needs to hit a certain speed to hear so if you slow down, you will not hear the woo woo sound then it's your bearing.

I jack the vehicle up and spin the rims/tires. If a wheel hub/bearing is bad, you can hear the grinding when you spin the rims/tires. Plus moving from side to side will cause the pitch change for sure while driving. I'm hoping the noise we are hearing on our 2012 G37 is the tires, not the trans as I'm 90% sure it's not the wheel bearings. The passenger side is super quiet no noise at all when I spin things, the drivers side has a tine bit of scraping sound but just barely and I attribute that to the brakes barely touching. Older tires from 2015 & 2018 on the car now, replacing the 2015 ones Tuesday and seeing how that affects the noise we are hearing.
