    Chris Fix is the best car-repair video maker I've ever seen! Watched 50 videos last 2 days, and the fast yet thorough professional editing Chris does just absolutely stands out from the rest. All the pertinent info, all the angles needed are shown, but none of the wasted time BSing and yakking. In this video, the fact he showed sound from bad, then good, then bad, good--WOW, exactly what we all need, who doesn't want the optometrist to do that A, B thing just one more time?? ;) Also, showing the bad bearing without play in hand, up near camera for sound, then ON THE CAR. He just goes the extra mile every time. But presents it all in a tight, fast scripted way. Absolutely subscribed! Thanks!

    Great Job! My wife didnt want to work on her Jeep Liberty 2012 because we werent exactly sure what was making noise. I had her watch your vid, and she was all "THATS IT!, THATS MY NOISE!" A trip to O'Reily Auto Parts and $240 later, we replaced the bearing/hub. I broke loose all the really tight bolts and she did the rest. We are both in our mid 50's.

    Thank you Chris for all your videos. I have fallen on hard times due to layoffs at work and can't afford to pay mechanics anymore to do all my auto repairs and have been watching your videos and others and have saved myself thousands of dollars by now in doing my own repairs. But now I do have a roaring sound in my right front tire and I can move my tire from side to side and up and down on my 20o9 envoy. But now a mechanic friend came over today for a BBQ and I told him and he looked at it and said my outer tie rod is bad also on that same tire. I drive 144 miles round trip 6 days a week to and from work In the country so no stop and go. Anyway I'm going to watch your other video on checking the rods. Thank you for helping guys like me with your videos. Next problem I have to tackle is it runs roughy when you start it lol.

    Chris, great tips on ways of checking for the bearing problem, sometimes its actually very difficult to tell (by sound - hearing) which side it's coming from, another tip, if you have a good temperature probe, the bad bearing will typically run at least 10-20 degrees hotter than normal so if you compare bearing case temp from side to side you should notice something.

    For those who have tried the tests in the video, and still aren't positive they have a wheel bearing issue, this is what I'd suggest. This assumes you have the following:
    - Unusual sound (almost like a low throttle exhaust note) which remains even off-throttle.
    - It becomes noticeable around 40mph, and gets more noticeable the faster you go.
    - Trying to shake the wheel from the 3 and 9 o'clock positions doesn't reveal any play in the bearing.
    - There are no alarm codes on the dash
    - Can't tell if the wheel is rotating normally or not (especially on RWD cars that have independent rear axles).
    For these cases, it would be hard to test them by yourself. In that case, the best option would be to buy a mechanic's stethoscope ($5 at harbor freight), place it on the wheel bearing hub, and compare the sound between the different wheel bearings. If one has a metal grinding sound much higher than the others, it's probably time for a new bearing.
    Thanks for the video Chris!

    When you spin the wheel on the Pontiac, i actually realized my wheel bearing must be bad if this is how a bad wheel bearing sounds like. Mine is like...101 the same. Think I'll have to take care of this soon. I know its not the tires cause i switched from summer to winter tires some 3 weeks ago. Noise still keeps bugging me but know i feel like i know for sure.

    I had that noise so I took my 2010 Tacoma to the Toyota dealer and they said I had a bad transmission mount. They replaced the trans mount under warranty but that did not fix the problem. It was the wheel bearings. Had to fix it myself. Dont trust them dealers!

    • @colemanadamson5943
      @colemanadamson5943 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +rudedogii can you be sure they changed the tranny mount? Pros are hard to find because people don't want to pay for their expertise. DIY'ers only shoot themselves in the foot because when they need a Pro they are scarce. Had they supported the Pro then he'd be there when needed. Think about it.

      not related to bearings but more about good mechanics. I took my truck in for inspection and mentioned a code that had been thrown and hard 1-2 shift. He said replace or rebuild tranny without looking. He happened to mention what shop he uses for rebuilds. I figured I'd cut the middleman and go there instead. They actually scanned while driving and confirmed my suspicion. Bad TCC valve. They fixed it and works perfectly and for 1/5th the price of rebuild.

      @MemphisMojo15s 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +rudedogii At least they didn't just blame your tires for the noise or the brakes for the scraping. I was under warranty and still had to replace both front bearings. their excuse? no play in the wheels.

    Good information. Thanks.
    A way to identify which front bearing (maybe even rear?) is making noise, is to make turns to the left and right.
    If the left front bearing is the problem, the noise will be present when loading that bearing (turning left) and will disappear/lessen when un-loading the left bearing (turning right).

    • @MarzNet256
      @MarzNet256 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      WMichael S Actually, it's the opposite. So, if you turn right you will increase load on left front.

      what about rear bearings? does the turning method affect checking those? i got a very slight sound coming from the rear after getting new tires. the shop drove around and said it might be the bearing but list a bunch of possible replacements such as brakes and rotors, break shoes, parking brake kit, backing plates, bearing, etc. they said it might be the bearing verbally
      however i spoke to another experienced mechanic and he said it might just be the brakes and rotors since bearings on my SUV are supposed to last a long time

    This video was super useful! I've been getting a strange noise coming from the passenger rear...and at first i thought my alignment was to blame. But after watching you describe the noise while driving (louder as speed and almost wind sounding); I immediately knew it was my bearing. And sure enough, i jacked it up and have the same looseness that you show when shaking the tire including a terrible squeak noise.
    Time to replace the hubs! (in pairs cause duh)

    Hey Chris. Thank you so much for this video. (I have watched alot of your tutorials and they are great). I actually came searching because my nissan Dualis(American= 'Nissan rogue') is making that whining noise when i get to 80km/hr and above. At first i thought it is the engine and then i did a little test by free wheeling down hill at the same speeds and the noise doesn't die down. So thanks again as i now know what to go looking for.

    Another way to tell is if your car says "Chevrolet Cobalt" on it anywhere. That's a telltale sign your wheel bearing is going bad. Seriously, went through 3 in 100K miles. Otherwise, under rated car that is really pretty good.

      All american made cars are shit. I have owned Toyotas most of my life and have NEVER had a wheel bearing problem. My wife wants a Cadillac, so I buy her one but let her know the transmission won’t last. 40,000 total miles and the wheel bearings have taken a crap. Come to find out, they only warranty them for 12 months. You KNOW they are purposefully installing cheap shit when they only warranty such an important part for 12 months. The replacement bearings ? Warranties for LIFE ! American cars suck horribly.

      CV joints don't make a constant sound, more like a random clunking. Especially at parking, back and forth.

    Saved me a bit of money lol, thankfully!
    I had a sneaky suspicion it was my caliper (it's old as the car I think) and I think this just confirmed it (gonna check to make sure the tie rod isn't bad first though)
    It only makes a weird almost grinding sound occasionally (only started last week after the first real cold rain of the year) when I brake and the lugs were HOT to the touch so I think the caliper finally bit the dust and is stuck
    Also interesting bit about the ABS light! I'm gonna have to check that out too, my passenger airbag has been on recall twice so my light is always on but maybe its one of the bearings
