    3:26 throttle body, this needs to be cleaned with special spray and maf/map sensor located next to it. When diy that procedure you will need to do all things together to warrant trouble free engine running for the next 50-80k miles, than cleaning again.
    Throttle body clean
    Intake manifold clean and map sensor
    Pcv clean and inspect, replace if necessary or if the car over 100knmiles
    Egr valve, cooler and pipe clean
    All metal gaskets can be re used but the rubber one on intake manifold must be changed.
    Good video 👍

    Tip. Use an old tooth brush to clean out the EGR tube along with brake /parts cleaner spray. Use a 12D common nail to clean out the small EGR tubes in the manifold ports. it is a perfect fit. After using it I reamed the hole out with a drill bit. I had a simple dish plastic bristle scrub brush, dipped in mineral spirits to clean the manifold ports. Used a metal wire brush dipped in mineral spirits to clean the engine block ports. Nice video. Easy to follow. Car runs like it is right off the showroom floor.

    This should be a 50,000 mile maintenance on this Prius generation really helps on fuel economy and brings back power also I used steel and plastic brushes but if yours is more of paste like I found that a plastic brush is better to used because the steel brushes are harder to clean and this gunk gets stuck on the steel brushes but the plastic ones can be clean a lot easier I bought my brushes at harbor fright

    A couple weeks ago I replaced my EGR & PCV valves, cleaned the EGR pipe and cooler, cleaned the intake manifold, replaced the MAP sensor and I'm still getting the P0401. I followed a video from NutzAboutBolts and they overlook the existence of the separate EGR passages in the manifold!! I'm now going to remove my intake manifold again to clean those passages. Hopefully that will fix my issue. THANKS A TON FOR THIS VIDEO!!!!

    You’ll want to run a can of Royal Purple Max Clean at your next fill up. It’ll do a great job of cleaning up your injectors and combustion chambers. You should notice better starting and smoother running of the engine.
    Personally, I’d also remove the crankcase breather tube; plug it on the box and put a cheap filter on the valve cover. The hybrids get a lot of buildup on the intake side.

    But you should have also

      How much oil burned? My 2010 Prius burns a quart every 3,000 miles and never replaced PCV after 185k miles. Toyota says normal to burn a quart in as little as 1200 miles.
      Some models have a recall on piston rings.

    • @rj.parker
      @rj.parker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mikeflores2000 2010-14 Prius had bad rings. If the car burned more than a quart every 1200 miles, Toyota would change the rings and pistons IF it was still in the 5 year 60,000 mile powertrain warranty. 5 years expired in 2015 for the 2010 models; 2019 for the 2014s. In mid 2014 Toyota did a production change to the new pistons and rings. So some 2014s are better as are the 2015s. The gen4 Prius in 2016 has a reengineered engine, egr, intake, cylinder cooling, etc. Much better hybrid system used across the Toyota product line today. Only the upcoming Toyota Crown (replacing the Avalon) has the newest gen6 turbo "Hybrid Max" system that has well over 300 hp.

    My new 2010 Toyota Prius now has 185k miles. During cold winter morning starts the engine would chatter and shake violently worse than a diesel 18 wheeler. The problem disappeared without my doing anything except 6 cans of Seafoam, 1 can per fill-up.
    My main concern is my MPG has gone from 50 to an average of 33. Is the throttle plate stuck closed, intake valves all gummed up, fuel injectors bad? I cleaned the MAF sensor.
    Changed air filter with washable K & N,
    oil and filter every 10k miles. I should every 5k city miles. My transmission fails to upshift likely because fluid never drained after every 60k miles.

    Do you have to bleed the EGR cooler or use any special tools when cleaning the cooler? My '10 has 135k miles on it, I just purchased it, and I plan to clean the intake manifold, cooler, and EGR itself very soon. Great video! I'm thinking about buying all new parts and replace rather than clean the old ones..

    • @robrig1646
      @robrig1646  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll need 10 and 12 metric sockets to remove the attachment nuts and a T8 torx bit socket to pull the attachment studs out of the head ( it's easier to get the egr cooler off with the studs out).
      You'll need to drain some of your coolant at the radiator drain. Put a small vinyl tube on the drain opening and you can drain the coolant into a pan without it running all over the plastic splash panels and making a mess under the car. Unbolt the throttle body from the intake manifold, but no need to disconnect the coolant hoses, just let the throttle body hang in the engine compartment.
      I used brake cleaner, carb cleaner, Purple Power, Simply Green (all at one time or another) to get the crud out of my cooler, EGR valve, piping, and inlet passages. It was a lot of spraying and scrubbing.
      I just bought a JDM engine for my Prius and I'm currently in the process of going over the engine prior to pulling my old engine. The EGR cooler was filled with carbon (surprise! surprise! surprise!).
      I bought a product called TSP ( trisodium phosphate), got it at Lowe's, made by Savogran, $13 for a big box .
      I put a couple gallons of hot water in a 5 gallon bucket with 2 cups of TSP. Soaked overnight, water was black. Ran Hot water through cooler to flush crud. Dumped bucket, refilled with 2 gallons hot water and 2 cups TSP, repeated for 3 full days. As of start of the 4th soak last night the water in the bucket wasn't black but more of a tea tinge. Tonight I'll flush the parts again, I'm thinking this will be my last overnight soak and flush, parts were getting pretty clean inside and flush water wasn't coming out black.
      I'm thinking from now on that's how I'll be doing the cleaning rather than spray, scrub, rinse, soak, spray, scrub,...etc. it was way less work, but then again, parts were off a replacement engine and I didn't have to get the EGR cleaned, back on, and running by Sunday night.
      If you pull the cooler, EGR valve and manifold Friday night, soak them in the TSP with hot water and do the hot rinse. You may get by with soaking and rinsing in hot water once a hour throughout the day and have it cleaned and back on by the end of the day without a whole lot of elbow grease. I think the hot rinse with the cooler pressed against the faucet really helped get the stuff out. EGR passages in the intake will probably need to be cleaned as in the video.
      There is no bleeding on the system, just top off the coolant tank and run the engine until it's hot, shut down, let it cool, then top off the tank. You may have to check and top it again later, it's no biggie.
      There's a procedure to make the engine run where you push start button twice (don't step on brake), set parking brake, gas pedal to floor twice,.... I can't remember the rest, you'll have to look it up, but after about 5 minutes you can shut it off and top the coolant.

      Chances are you're clogging. I soak all my EGR parts in very hot water + cleaner, last time it was all weekend; soaked, rinsed (with hot water) , soaked, rinsed, soaked, rinsed, in my laundry room work sink....It's not just a quick shot of carb cleaner down the cooler and you're done. Certain cleaners will cut the oil and others will cut the carbon. I think I used LA's Totally Awesome for one cooler (worked best) and Oxy-clean on other another cooler (worked best), also numerous cans of brake cleaner. I try and get my parts spotless, not because I'm anal, but the cleaner I can get them, the longer it will be before I have to do this again.

    Hey RobRig, Just ran across your video on your intake for the Prius. After being coerced into doing the maintenance on my Prius I recently changed out the PCV. I did not do the intake although I bought the gaskets anticipating that I might have to go from the top but was able to get to the PCV from the bottom as another youtuber displayed. I'm really curious though as to what type of fuel do you run in your Prius? I know there's a lot of controversy regarding it does or does not matter what type of fuel you run but I'm a firm believer in running only Chevron. Just curious as to what type of fuel you are running?

      Costco 91 or shell nitro has practically no ethanol, which is the culprit in leaving this burnt deposit leftover. Those types of gas I use in my prius.

    • @robrig1646
      @robrig1646  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I run 87 octane (with ethanol as is commonly found in the US). It's rare to find service stations with no-ethanol gas, usually they're in rural areas. When I can find it, it's as expense as the 93 octane.

    • @robrig1646
      @robrig1646  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@sanjeevk1842 I'm aware of the "problems" with ethanol, mostly ruining fuel systems over time if the gas sits for long periods (like in my lawn mower). I've not heard that ethanol causes clogged intakes in fuel injection systems. This looks like carbon and oil (PCV) type of problem. I'm thinking of adding an oil catch can to the PCV system.

    Thank you RobRig for the excellent video. I successfully performed this service on my 2011 Lexus CT200h this past weekend following your steps...esp. the tip about the 10mm socket to unhook the plastic clips, not disconnecting the coolant lines to the throttle body, and using cleaning brushes. I used a set from Harbor Freight that were okay...probably could be a bit longer. I also should have started straight in with brake kleen instead of the throttle body/carb cleaner that I used. That was on me and would have saved a lot more time. The CT doesn't get as good of gas mileage as the Prius, but on my first test drive circuit, I got an average MPG of 46 vs 41 after the cleaning. I just wanted to thank you again for your video!

I used multiple thin brushes and once I removed big chunks, I used pressure washer to each ports. Repeated the processes multiple times. I’ll probably do it again every 50K miles. I also replaced PCV valve since intake manifold was removed, and cleaned out the valves. This had nothing to do with rattling noises. Thanks.

      @robrig1646  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Sagemeister007 That's good news. I replaced my original engine with a JDM engine. I tore down the old engine and found all the piston oil control rings clogged.
      I now make sure I change my oil every time the change oil light comes on regardless of the oil manufacturer's claims of "15,000 miles". I also started adding 8 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil at each oil change.
      You're probably still gonna get oil through the engine from the PCV system. My old engine was getting oil in the intake and new engine did the same, so I added an oil catch can between the PCV and intake manifold.
      If anything, start using Marvel in your oil, it'll help reduce and clean build up on the rings. It's pretty cheap preventive medicine.

    I recently bought a 2010 Prius with the problems you described.
    70 years ago, I used to hang out around a GM truck repair station that was run by a few WW2 Red Ball Express mechanics.
    [I pumped gas there.] Everything they did ran fine, courtesy of the US Government and its petroleum engineers.
    A few products that worked well then have survived a very long time.
    Two are Marvel Mystery Oil and Rislone (extremely slippery). Also, more recently, -- Techtron.
    That Prius said i delivered 42.3 mpg for the last 1000+ miles. But I was getting less under ideal conditions, 70F
    I tried the best of Rislone -- use with two tank fulls -- The misfire stopped and the MPG rose to 45.5.
    After the second tank of Rislone, I added a tank full with Techtron and nursed th MPG to above 48.5 on combined Highway and regular.
    Something good is happening, and I'll keep trying to see how much more I can get.
    I am driving slower than usual (65 now) and the weather is a perfect 70 degrees.
    I'm eager to seel how well that lasts, especially when the fall/winter sets in.
    Useful advice: Avoid "crap gas."
    All refined gasoline reaches NE through pipelines, where they drain into immense tanks owned by brand names who add adatives.
    Gasoline tankers carry two grades that they mix to form three levels: regular, medium, and hi-test.
    I put about 180K miles (on top of 60K -- 240K) on another 2010 Prius and always tried to use Sunoco which cost a little more but always seems to deliver 5-10% more miles.
    It's all about the adatives.
    BTW - Something I noticed recently -- Mobil One has oil guaranteed for 20,000 miles.

    • @robrig1646
      @robrig1646  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good info. I gotta try the Rislone, see what happens. I do know my Lie-O'Meter always says I'm getting 2-3 mpg better than calculations after a top off vs mileage since previous fill.
      As far as 20,000 mile "guarantee' on motor oil, I wouldn't do it. I run full synth and still change mine at recommended Intervals: oil is way cheaper than new engine.

    • @urbanturbine
      @urbanturbine 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@robrig1646 20,000 is insane. It is not just the oil that you change, it is the build up of other crap that you get rid of when you change your oil. Even 10,000 miles is a stretch. if you read the Toyota maintanance guide, they put an asterisk where it says 10,000. You really have to be driving pretty much all highway miles to warrant 10000 mile stretch on oil change. If you have harsh winters (half the country), lots of urban city driving, delivery driving, short commutes etc, you should replace every 5000 as per Toyota in the maintenance guide. Even the cheapest oil is better than not changing your oil in correct intervals.

    Pls I seriously need your help. My location is Nigeria. There are no mechanics here who can really work on hybrid cars.
    For the past 2 months, I have been having rattling and knocking sound. With no error codes. I cleaned the whole egr systems, cleaned injectors, changed spark plugs, cleaned throttle body, cleaned PC valve, Cleaned inlet manifold, I have oil catch can installed for about 5 months now. Upon all these, the car is still rattling and making knocking sound. Especially when it's charging the HV battery.
    If I drive fast the sound disappears.
    My coolant doesn't shot, my engine oil doesn't have water in it but I noticed the oil does shot. So I can't say it's blown head gasket.
    And today this new incident happened.
    Now if I remove the 12v battery head for 5 minutes and put it back the car starts on ev only after 3 to 5 seconds then car trys to start the engine and the ready light goes off and check hybrid system light and other error lights comes on on dash board.
    Is this a sign that my engine knocked?
    Will Changing the crankshaft position sensor solve the issue?
    What exactly should I do?
    The car has 145,000 miles on it.
    The error codes it shows using toyota techstream now are P0335, P0A0F, C1259, C1310
