    A relative gifted me their 3rd-gen Prius as it had a blown head gasket. I started disassembling the engine to remove the head a few weeks ago and got to the EGR studs and almost broke the long one (the external torx part started to twist). My daily driver sprung a head gasket leak and is a bit more of a project, so I came back to the Prius to see how I could do with continuing the job. That stud came right out. My neighbor finds humor in my shenanigans and came over to give me company and brought a couple tools I was missing. That “disposable member” nut was a challenge. I am thinking the vandal may be onto something with cutting it off and filing the remaining bracket smooth. I joined Priuschat and will look for the heated argument. LOL. I subscribed and appreciate your great documentation of these jobs. Also, thanks Margie for the camera work and PDF drafts!

    I performed this job today on my 2015 toyota auris hybrid which has the same set up as the Toyota Prius. I soaked my egr cooler overnight in degreaser followed by a thorough jet wash the following morning and then Hooray I could see daylight through my egr cooler. I took Merv’s advice and cut the dreaded bottom bracket as it is easier to take off next time and it is easier to put back on. Take your time when performing this job and make sure you clean everything properly especially the small holes in the manifold. Carb cleaner / egr cleaner is not sufficient enough to clean this and I advise something stronger. Some say don’t use oven cleaner but I used mr muscle and it stripped the carbon away. Some parts of carbon I stripped with a metal wire hanger. Please be thorough when doing this and take your time and do not forget to change your pcv valve when performing this task.
    Now my car drives with a lot more power 😊

    Tip for using magnets. Get some small rare earth ones that can fit in your glove finger tips. Then when you spin off those tough ones you can’t see, the magnets in your finger tips will keep them from dropping.

    9:46. Instead of torque stud, I used 6-mm socket. Feels a bit loose, but it worked, Did not strip it. Again, you can trow away the cursed torque stud, and replace it with long M8 bolt and a nut that is screwed all the way to the head of the bolt before installation. :-))) Again, I love your coloring!

    A word to the wise...after fighting with the "expendable crew member" for a day and a half, I came up with a brainstorm that maybe my tool was too big (no pun intended) because of this hose that's right next to it that prevented me from getting a 12mm deep well and 3/8 drive ratchet in there. So I ran to Napa and got me a 12mm 1/4" drive deep well socket along with a 3" and 6" extension just in case and with the help of my long handled 1/4" drive ratchet, I had it out in a matter of minutes

    This video is so well done and funny and you explain everything so a 10 year old can do the job I got to your channel by someone else saying to go to prius shaking I couldn’t help it but subscribe right away And give you a thumbs up for the good work you do for your community. My Prius has a blown up head gasket because it was losing a little bit of coolant. I had put bars leak a few times and it seems like it was getting better just losing a little bit of coolant. And then a few months down the road it was shaking a lot at starting and even putting in drive. It would shake for about 234 minutes. So I decide to ask my mechanic to put the blue devil head gasket sealant which he did and now I don’t have anymore heat coming in the car and when it starts shaking engine light came on I checked the code and have cylinder one and four misfiring. Can someone help me to diagnose this?
    Thanks

    i took apart the "forbidden" egr motor as well. nothing so darn forbidde, just dont loose anything. There are a couple of springs, but they are under the rotor. Also, when removing the phillips screws, do yourself a favor. send these screws to make company to the stud from heII. replace them with hex-head bolts or allen wrench bolts, 5 mm. Such bolts are used often on bicycles.

  • @west_park7993
    @west_park7993 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I cleaned my egr heat exchanger with boiling water and leaf blower. It helped, but it took 5 hot water baths. I would suggest a laboratory bunsen gas burner. The flame is very hot and pointed inside. This is all stainless steel and you can heat it safely to red-hot, i.e. 600 C deg. All garbage burns before this point.

    7:23: "giant pain in the aaaaa...." i cut it tru, so that as soon as you loosen the nut, it can slide off. nope. did not help. still the two studs on the very far entrance are obstacle. well, the heII with the 7:23 bolt. If you very much insist, there are special bolts with long thick necks, that have about 10 mm of thread on the front. They can be used instead, and the head is outside, easyly accessile with a wrench. Or, take a long enough M8 bolt. put two nuts at the end, leaving as long as you want thread , tighten them against each other. Again, the head is now on the open, accessible to most wrenches.

    what do you think about just removing the EGR valve and cleaning that, disconnecting the Exhaust pipe from the back of the EGR cooler, keeping the coolant lines attached, and just blowing it out real good with compressed air? The Car Care Nut suggests this method, wondering what you think about it.
    How necessary is it to make it spotless like that? I don't really have a problem on my end, just doing it as preventative measure while changing spark plugs

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I'm tempted to say it's the lazy way out, but sometimes lazy is better. HOWEVER, seems to me it depends on how clogged up the thru-channels are. It's hard to tell by shining a flashlight through because it's not really a straight shot, and if she's still attached to the exhaust manifold I think it would be hard to see in there.

    • @joskd8491
      @joskd8491 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if it's really clogged you can't just blow the debrie out. I took my EGR-cooler off and had to use ovencleaner (natriumhydroxide) to solve the problem. Took me a while but it's like new now. I mean, the job is difficult for an amateur like me and I just thougth: If I do it, I do it properly and now the cooler is cleaner than new. Also intakemanifold is cleaned a the car runs a lot better and smoother. Just invested time and no money! Take good care of your car and it can last a very long time, so that saves a lot of money. By the way: sawing off that difficult mounting point underneeth is something that I'll do next time

      I'm a DIY hobbyist just like you, and of course we all attempt these repairs at our own peril, but a couple things leap to mind and I'll throw them out there just in case they resonate: Maybe you forgot to reattach the PCV hose? Coolant leaking from when you clamped the hoses? (Maybe one got damaged or wasn't reattached right) Gaskets properly reinstalled in the various parts of the cooler, including the one that goes between the cooler and the exhaust manifold? Hopefully these suggestions might spur some insight. Also, if it helps, this video shows my observations about those gaskets: th-cam.com/video/QGcZYGA2cnM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=X_aMkFf05ceWLW7n

    One should never block off the egr and replace sensor with a resistor.

    This is a great video. This car takes some work and it will eat your nerves. Part of the design of this car are not so smart especially the Winshield which is very easy to break and that cooler bracket on the bottom is just bad painful design not even necessary. I learned and done the head gasket alone and it was great for 23k miles now is running super rough misfiring cylinder 1,2. I’ve taken all off the manifold the cooler soaking overnight and the valve I gave a good cleaning,will see if this will solve my problem. The manifold was very dirty but after cleaning it only not a difference at all. After I took the egr valve off it was full of carbon on both ends. The design of the egr system is terrible as you have to keep doing it over and over.

    Do you think you can do alot of people a favor by showing the egr cooler cleaning of generation 4 prius? It involves methodically removing the inverter first to get to the cooler.
    A bit more challenge for you.
    Many thanks in advance...

    • @MervsServiceSecrets

      Maybe needle nosed vice grips? Or a very small closed-end box wrench. Just enough to grab the end of that stud and start her turning. And don't forget which way she needs to spin. It's easy to get disoriented.

    Hey Merv, I did the EGR service, intake manifold on 2011 Prius with 194k miles. The car was running fine but I figured I do the service to avoid any problems. I put everything back together and I started the car, it ran for about 10 seconds and started to surge and stalled. I started it again with the same results.
    Got p3190 and p3191 + p0a0f codes.
    Any idea what the heck I did wrong? Or why it's doing this?

    • @socalbail99
      @socalbail99 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I did exactly what everyone was going to tell me.
      I went back and checked my work. This Dumb@$$ forgot to connect the PCV hose to the intake manifold.
      Thank you for your awesome videos, with plenty of Organic humor.

    My 2010 died on the freeway. P3191 code. Is it possible that the EGR cooler is blocked and keeping it from running? It is not the fuel pump.

    • @MervsServiceSecrets
      @MervsServiceSecrets  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have a magic answer for you, but it might be the EGR valve itself is having problems opening and closing. Watch this video to see how I dissect it --> th-cam.com/video/QGcZYGA2cnM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=DK9d2PCoaOBI0O5h Might also be something as simple as a sensor gone bad. Maybe check out priuschat to see what other's who've had the same problem might recommend. You might also be able to determine the best order to fix/replace things in. (starting with the lowest cost solution, then working your way up). Hope this helps. -Merv Himself

    The hell bolt isint that bad if you put the silver cover back on the engine and lay on it feel for the nut with your left and and come straight in with a extension with your right I've removed these coolers like ten times from every which angle even standing in the engine bay with the hood off (have a nice crack on the relay box from resting my knee :/ )and this seems to be pretty effortless way of doing it be sure to wear a hard hat so you dont bump your head into the windshield trying to see what your doing im about 3 concussions away from getting a free cooler from toyota
