People hate priuses but honestly if you have fun cars to drive having a reliable car that gets great mpg is never a bad thing. You won't have to worry about things breaking left and right like the merc
So true.. got my fun Volvo S80 project car for the occassional weekend dates and special occassions but 95% of the time my wife and I use our Prius for errands and just going to work, a-b type stuff. It's unreal how much we have saved having a Prius, no regrets! The Prius is getting so much more poplular as time goes on... I've had friends and coworkers come to me saying they are looking/need a Prius for affordable transportation blah blah blah and I just smile and agree.
To take the entire EGR assembly out, I used an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three 12 mm Nuts in the back if the EGR cooler, took me a while to reach the 4th hidden 12 mm Nut underneath the EGR cooler. Used a Torx E8 socket and 1/4 inch drive finger wrench to remove the two stud bolts in the back of the EGR cooler to finally free out the EGR assembly
To each their own I smoked for 30 yrs and may 11 2019 will be 5 yrs since i quit smoking. Couple of times to the emergency room cuz I couldn't breathe made me realize it's not worth it
Tips to PREVENT HEAD GASKET FAILURE: 231K - 2013 Prius. Just had head gasket replaced for $1,500. Could of prevented it if I cleaned/replaced EGR cooler my second run around 80K or 90K miles? Maybe it happened to me a bit sooner because I cleaned my EGR cooler out about 90% +\- at 130k miles, + 1000 miles/week, 50K/yr. and maybe because of potentially more cold/heat cycles on the head gasket. Lots of people highly recommend 3rd gen prius owners clean or replace EGR cooler AT or BEFORE you hit every 100K miles. EGR cooler $178 new on ebay, $300 at toyota, part #25601-37010. Clean EGR pipe and valve with the intake manifold/throttle body. Replace PCV valve, optional oil catch can. X At 230K miles my EGR cooler was completely blocked up with soot (previous cleaning at 130K). My symptoms were brief misfire on #2 couple times every 100 miles and slow engine coolant leak into the engine. #2 spark plug and #2 set of 4 valves were pretty dirty. Head gasket and cylinder head was replaced with refurbished one. (6,000/3month warranty). Car runs great so far. 4th gen prius has improved this problem.
You were close when you were talking about EGR cooler. That is the main place where soot clogging occurs, as passages are pretty small. I took my EGR cooler off at 170K miles and it was completely clogged up with soot. I could not even see any day light through it when held up against the sky. That meant of course that EGR was completely off line with no exhaust gas recirculation occuring at all.
If there's any clogging in the EGR pipe or valve, you can bet the EGR cooler (the box-like extension behind the valve going to the exhaust manifold) is completely clogged. That's where there either is a problem or will be a problem. Those are more difficult to get out as there are coolant lines, etc but it's still a good idea to clean that out thoroughly. After removing the valve, put a tube on there and blow air toward the exhaust/catalytic converter. If air won't pass through easily, that's where the problem is. Figure on sending at least 3 cans of carb cleaner through the cooler (after removing it) or just get a new one.
Great video. I'm watching it before replacing for first time the spark plugs in my 2015 Prius at 155 k miles. By the way, the only 3rd Gen Prius that burns oil, is the 2010. This problem was corrected later models.
CLEAN YOUR EGR COOLER DON'T LISTEN TO THIS FOOL AND DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON GETTING A NEW EGR COOLER IT'S EXPENSIVE YOU JUST NEED TO CLEAN IT WITH PRESSURE WASHER AND SOME COPPER WIRE
Not quite true. It happens for many Prius models that have a PCV valve design and also an oil control ring issue in the pistons that affected several different Toyota models in the late 2000's to mid 2015's (known issue from the factory). Toyota later went on to rectify the issue. Even still, the Prius has proven to be a very reliable car if properly maintained.
Thanks for the video. If it is 2010-2012, yes oil consumption from soft cylinder rings and head gasket leak at around 150k miles. After 2013, Toyota revised the head gasket and cylinder ring and no more oil consumption nor head gasket leak. The intake and below throttle body in 2013-newer is still wet from mixture oil+gasoline mix from blow-by but no problem at 100k miles yet.
2010 ten 3 gen only was know for a piston ring problem was fixed 2011-2015. In 2010 they had a different piston ring manufacture. 2011 & up are fine just letting you all know if your looking at buying a Prius used.
the oil issue was for my knowledge only on 2009-2010 models and they fixed it after ward. in general Toyota and Priuses alike can do half a million miles easily with out any issue apart then the necessary regular maintenance every 10K miles. and that's it.
Remember to show how to de energize the Prius by removing the orange clip behind the spare tire compartment. If you don’t and you touch anything orange in the engine it will shock you and possibly end your life.
Awesome video of some good preventative maintenance. Some models of Toyotas are known for sludge issues. Might not be a bad idea to pop the valve cover and inspect under it. On my Tacoma i did and found a ton of sludge. I guess the prior owner didn't change oil enough. My oil pan had a ton, clogging the oil pickup screen causing low oil pressure. which in turn was making the valves tap.
I had to do this on my 242k 2010 Prius a few months ago. Install an oil catch can and a new PCV while you're in there to prevent the intake from filling up with oil.

Hello friend, I have begun to have some engine shaking for about 5 seconds after start. I checked the spark plugs and 3 out of 4 have a liquid on the thread. What does that indicate of?
Don't buy a new intake manifold or cooler. They clean up easily and perfectly. I used high pressure car wash wand on everything then blasted them dry with air. Make sure to remove the sensor on the intake. My egr cooler was 98% clogged. Car wash wand cleaned it in minutes. I've cleaned my air intake 4 times now. Works great every time. My 2010 prius just burns so much oil it clogs up the intake every 20k miles.
I've replaced plugs and although engine runs smoother after warm up, it shakes during starts and after sitting at red lights. It's always burned more oil than it seems necessary. I'm thinking the EGR system is the culprit here.
napynap NutzAboutBolts has videos on cleaning the egr cooler. It’s a bit harder then just cleaning the air intake manifold but doable. I would suggest doing both at the same time. NutzAboutBolts has the air intake manifold cleaning video too, but he fails to emphasize the real culprit which are the tiny ports inside each of the larger intake ports on the manifold. Just make sure you clean those small ports. Those are the entire reason for cleaning the air intake manifold.

If the thermostat has not been replaced recently replace it on general principles. Thermostats don't last forever and Toyota hybrid system are *very* sensitive to engine coolant temperature. The first gen fuel economy would drop 30-40% in winter because of overcooling. If the spark plugs are near the 100K mile mark, replace them now. If top tier gasoline has not been used most of the time (I never put anything but top tier in my Prius... they carbon up easily) add a bottle of Techron to the tank. The problems with drops in fuel economy are almost always one of these three things. [Nothing but Prius since 2002]
All that work to replace spark plugs!!? Ok I’m getting an EV Chevy bolt instead lol. This video was very helpful in my decision. I’m assuming a 2020 model is the same. It doesn’t look simple to me.
As far as plugs go... If it ain't broke don't fix it. Modern plugs can go 300k easy. Best advice for a Prius? Never let the oil get over filled and keep the hybrid battery filter clean.

[Nothing but Prius since 2002]
Fix the Mercedes leak then sell it. You know what the parts cost and it should not be that big of a job.
I like the Prius and that little cruze you have, is the cruze the 1.4?
Make sure you watch reedjasond for his Prius coolant change videos. You can screw it up by not clearing the air from the system enough.
EV mode not working means hybrid battery is bad.
You must be using Mobil1... try Castrol edge, hardly burns at all
Egr job is not a quick job! Plan to spend a least 2 days to do it right including taking off the intake manifold 😩
Will you ever consider buying a Aston Martin? I mean you technically have one in your intro..... Just curious.
Possibly.
If you don't quit smoking, Tyrone is coming to get you.
Hi UberMan
I didn't think it was that hard doing this: it's not like you're taking off engine components to access the plugs.
Thank you
Want about blocking the egr?
All that work to replace spark plugs!!? Ok I’m getting an EV Chevy bolt instead lol. This video was very helpful in my decision. I’m assuming a 2020 model is the same. It doesn’t look simple to me.
Hey gentleman you dont need to remove all these things to change the spark plugs im doing this job in 20 minutes
so... where's your link to prove it?
Best of luck to you
There's a much quicker way to do the spark plugs without removing wiper assembly
Plan on sharing?
No you don`t. You can change the spark plugs with the right tool. But seems to me you don`t have that so you take off way too much parts for that.
Your battery is probably about dead. Will definitely affect mileage.
Tim is OK
As far as plugs go... If it ain't broke don't fix it. Modern plugs can go 300k easy. Best advice for a Prius? Never let the oil get over filled and keep the hybrid battery filter clean.
👍👍👍
you have almost empty coolant >> you going to have a lot of problems if you keep driving it like this >>
Wowowo. Tim
On highway 50 mpg, but 27mph average? Lol. No wonder. I usually do 60 avg on highway and 43+ mpg
Your camera suk..
If you show plp. To do repair good but be sure to show light
you need to remove all the details of the egr and rinse them, and you are engaged in ananism
If you step on gas it will fire up
