I was 25 when this song came out. I totally got it. From about '65 thru '75 the "na-na" thing was our way of a massive put-down. Somebody gets caught out, the rest point fingers and sing out "Na-na. Na-na" like it was shame on you. Steve Perry makes it the greatest "F you" put-down in history. And he does it with not only passion, but attitude as well. I'm pretty certain everybody here can think of a person in their past to dedicate this song to. The instant 'connection' between artist and listener is forged. I think anyone who has ever listened to this song will smile whenever Journey is mentioned and think "...yeah. The F-you song..." 😂
Wheel On The Sky was their first radio release on " hard rock" radio. It's from the album Infinity. It's awesome 😎, as are all of the songs on that album. For me and my friends, it was our introduction to Journey. We never looked back and are still fans. Winds Of March from this album is exquisitely beautiful if you REALLY wanna hear Steve!!!!❤

Journey and especially Steve Perry has been my all time favorite band since I was 12. They were the posters on my walls and I spent all of my babysitting money on their music. I was such a Journey fan I had to buy music magazines to get their pictures and read about them. I am 55 now, and 2 weeks ago I got a Journey T-shirt in the mail. I wear it with pride.
The "na na na" is like "nanny nanny booboo Nanny nanny na na crying. And Sam Cooke was his biggest influence. His mom used to listen to him while he grew up, and always aspired to be that voice.
Journey is one of those bands that are hard to get into, but boy when you do, it's an absolute treat. The amount of creativity these guys had especially for their time were so far ahead of their time.

It's been said in earlier comments but Steve Perry has said in interviews that Sam Cook was a big influence! I think you may have reacted to Santana Soul Sacrifice live at Woodstock. The organ player who was in Santana in that Woodstock video is the same keyboard player in this Journey video. His name is Gregg Rolie and was a founding member of Journey.

This is from Journeys 5th album but second with Steve Perry on main Lead Vocals , Keyboards Gregg Rolie was there main vocalist until Steve arrived On a side note just saw Journey bassist Ross Valery up on stage with guitarist Steff Burns & incredible drummer Jeff Campitelli tearing it up and having fun a week ago.

At age 75, he has signed with a new label. He recorded the “Traces” album and “The Season”. He has now recorded 3 additional albums, the latest being this year. He does sing some Louis Armstrong “What a Wonderful World” and it’s beautiful!! He also recorded a tune along side his Dad, deceased, that also represents his early influences. “Irresponsible” is the tune Perry sang with his Dad who also had a phenomenal voice! Sam Cooke was his original influence. It was much like Natalie Cole did with her Dad, Nat King Cole in recording “Unforgettable”. He’s just a soulful singer! He’s as good now as he was then.

Yes to "Oh Sherrie”, it is off Steve’s first solo album, “Street Talk”, while he was still in Journey. Written for his then girlfriend Sherrie Swafford, Steve gifted her all royalties from this song, nice pocket change!
Universal truth: if they cheat with you, they'll cheat on you. I recently heard the version of this from the 1981 Houston concert, and it's very different: less bluesy, more rock, with a long guitar solo instead of the blues riffs on the piano. It shows how the sound of the band continued to evolve after Greg Rolie left. There are a ton of good choices to react to, but maybe Feeling That Way/Anytime from the Midnight Special or Lights/Stay Awhile from the Osaka 1980 concert for some more of their Greg Rolie period or Send Her My Love or Still They Ride from the post-Rolie power ballad/arena rock period. I love this song for couples skate when I went rollerskating as a teenager. Super romantic song, the drums simulate a heartbeat throughout the whole song.
"Oh Sherrie" is a solo endeavor of Steve Perry's. I would suggest Journey's earlier stuff with duet singing with Gregg Rolie, the keyboardist. Feeling That Way/Anytime is a good one. When SP first joined Journey, their manager wanted to easily slide him into the role of lead singer, so there were several duets with Gregg. This way it wouldn't be as off-putting to the then-current Journey fans.

Journey and especially Steve Perry has been my all time favorite band since I was 12. They were the posters on my walls and I spent all of my babysitting money on their music. I was such a Journey fan I had to buy music magazines to get their pictures and read about them. I am 55 now, and 2 weeks ago I got a Journey T-shirt in the mail. I wear it with pride.

And Sam Cooke was his biggest influence. His mom used to listen to him while he grew up, and always aspired to be that voice.

Journey is one of those bands that are hard to get into, but boy when you do, it's an absolute treat. The amount of creativity these guys had especially for their time were so far ahead of their time.

Also to add we were very country but my family was very hip hop. So when we would see or hear anything journey my bros and sis’s would clown about his clothes. But NEVER about how bad ass he was! lol! We all love Steve Perry! ❤

It's been said in earlier comments but Steve Perry has said in interviews that Sam Cook was a big influence! I think you may have reacted to Santana Soul Sacrifice live at Woodstock. The organ player who was in Santana in that Woodstock video is the same keyboard player in this Journey video. His name is Gregg Rolie and was a founding member of Journey.
I had such a crush on Steve Perry during my college days. Yikes! That voice and that hair!! Yum!! And, yes, he's say "na na na". Making fun!

This is from Journeys 5th album but second with Steve Perry on main Lead Vocals , Keyboards Gregg Rolie was there main vocalist until Steve arrived
On a side note just saw Journey bassist Ross Valery up on stage with guitarist Steff Burns & incredible drummer Jeff Campitelli tearing it up and having fun a week ago.
Ross put out a solo album a few months ago. Check it out .

Ross was there because Steff was back in country and he did a show with some of his friends like Ross , Jeff Campitelli , guitarist Jeff Watson , guitarist Tal Morris , singer guitarist Jim Funk and drummer Billy Gibson from Huey Lewis and the News & there saxophonist who’s name I just can’t remember right now.
Google Journey first hit... The gambit worked immediately as lead single “Wheel in the Sky” reached Number 57 on the Hot 100. Video of them playing their first hit song on The Midnight Special in February 1978,
At age 75, he has signed with a new label. He recorded the “Traces” album and “The Season”.
He has now recorded 3 additional albums, the latest being this year. He does sing some Louis Armstrong “What a Wonderful World” and it’s beautiful!! He also recorded a tune along side his Dad, deceased, that also represents his early influences. “Irresponsible” is the tune Perry sang with his Dad who also had a phenomenal voice! Sam Cooke was his original influence. It was much like Natalie Cole did with her Dad, Nat King Cole in recording “Unforgettable”.
He’s just a soulful singer!

The Sam Cooke song you're referring too is "Nothing Can Change This Love". What an amazing voice!!! Wow!!!

A deserved hit single for Cooke in late 1962, "Nothing Can Change This Love" can be found on his album "Mr Soul" released in February 1963. The second verse is:
Mm, make me weep and you can make me cry (Perry sung this line in the exact same way with virtually the same words)
See me coming and you can pass me by
But honey, nothing, nothing can ever change this love I have for you
Take time to check out this song again as it was preformed live during the Escape Tour and is on YT. Yes to "Oh Sherrie”, it is off Steve’s first solo album, “Street Talk”, while he was still in Journey. Written for his then girlfriend Sherrie Swafford, Steve gifted her all royalties from this song, nice pocket change!

I recently heard the version of this from the 1981 Houston concert, and it's very different: less bluesy, more rock, with a long guitar solo instead of the blues riffs on the piano. It shows how the sound of the band continued to evolve after Greg Rolie left.
There are a ton of good choices to react to, but maybe Feeling That Way/Anytime from the Midnight Special or Lights/Stay Awhile from the Osaka 1980 concert for some more of their Greg Rolie period or Send Her My Love or Still They Ride from the post-Rolie power ballad/arena rock period. Lights is another song that wasn't a huge hit but has become one of their better-known songs over the years.
Also, I know you've done the official version of Any Way You Want It, but just for fun and to enjoy the performance, check out the Houston 1981 concert version. It's the second encore, it's more up-tempo than the studio version, and Steve is running around like a maniac.
I seen them in Pittsburgh over 40yrs ago when l was 20 one of the best bands l ever seen, Steve Perry had the best voice.

Yes! Perry totally pulled the beginning from Nothing Can Change This Love by Sam Cooke. Being a songwriter and knowing how songwriters think, I would imagine that line launched the whole idea of this song.
I love this song for couples skate when I went rollerskating as a teenager. Super romantic song, the drums simulate a heartbeat throughout the whole song.

"Oh Sherrie" is a solo endeavor of Steve Perry's. I would suggest Journey's earlier stuff with duet singing with Gregg Rolie, the keyboardist. Feeling That Way/Anytime is a good one. When SP first joined Journey, their manager wanted to easily slide him into the role of lead singer, so there were several duets with Gregg. This way it wouldn't be as off-putting to the then-current Journey fans.
Back in "the day" saying na na na na na was a childish way of chastising someone. Like "I got ice cream and you didn't! Na na na na na" Steve is absolutely chastising the women that made him cry "now it's YOUR turn girl to cry! Na na na na na na" Childish and bitter, yes, but completely relatable and amusing
