Here's a tip to keep the dishes from piling up. Just have one or two dinner plates, forks, spoons, knives, etc. Put the rest away. Whenever you eat, wash your one dish and knife, fork and spoon as soon as you finish eating. Takes about 30 seconds, your dishes never pile up, and they are always clean.

Great advice. My wife passed almost 2 years ago. Being by myself is not something I enjoy. Some say they like the peace they have. I had an opposite situation several days ago. I got a call from my 11 years old granddaughter's school. They couldn't reach her Mom so they called me. I was having a bad day dealing with my loneliness and cancer situation. My granddaughter was screaming her teeth hurt and was at the nurses office. I rushed to the school and took her to the dentist for a loose tooth. Thus my day was turned upside down. Yet it was great to spend the afternoon with my granddaughter and have lunch with her. It made me feel I was useful and can help when needed.

Clearly you are not doing the right things for your health. Where do you think cancer comes from? It comes mainly from your diet (except certain types of cancer such as lung cancer). This means they are mostly due to people's own lifestyle choices. Loneliness is also a choice, an emotional addiction to people that you refuse to see for what it is and dump it. Try developing a life philosophy like stoicism. You can't control everything. The things you can't control you must discard because they waste your energy. Focus only on the things you can control, your diet, exercise, etc. This approach can only improve your experience to some degree.

After a few years of getting to know the locals I made a deal with a young man and his wife, that I get to live with them until I die. They take care of me and when I’m dead, they inherit what I have, which is considerable in their country. Any day now we will have a new baby in the house. I'm 64, best friend 70, we realized about 4 years ago that it wasn't so great financially to be on our own when we crunched numbers, we now share a 2/2 condo, enough room to have privacy, we have helped with medical appointments and other issues that have come up. If you find someone that's really a good match, you don't have to live alone in silence and you get human interaction which is invaluable. We also maintain our own interests, some friends in common, we are in a senior community, but this works in any community.

The one simple thing as a whistle can be life saving in any situation at any age. I’ve been touting this for years. It’s louder and carries farther than your voice and doesn’t require a lot of effort to signal someone. I use one set of dishes and clean them after eating. When I’m lazy, I use paper plates and plastic utensils. Use once and done. My neighbor has a key to get into my house in an emergency. Great advice that a lot of seniors never think about until it’s too late.

William Holden was 63 when he died. He was at home having a drink alone, he fell or tripped, he hit his head on the coffee table, he managed to sit in a chair next to the phone and bled to death there. These things can happen to anyone at any time, is all about taking PRECAUTIONS. I am sixty now and I have a routine, one of the really BIG things I know was hurting me, was DRINKING. It messed with my cognitive health. Not to mention, damage to my liver, the danger of falling. It was KILLING me very slowly. I stopped drinking twelve years ago and I'm healthier now than I was in my forties.
If I had to advise anyone anything is to STOP DRINKING. Believe me is not part of your personality is just a crutch we use to deal with other feelings and if you think about it we had to learn that as well.

One way to stop time feeing like it moves too quickly is to do different things. Falling into a very strict routine for the sake of 'efficiency' really makes time feel like it speeds up. Do things out of the ordinary. Going somewhere you've never been to makes the journey feel long, whereas the way back seems shorter and if you start do it several times (like a commute) the route becomes over-familiar and so 'short'.

Whenever I am out , always talking to people starting conversations and so many got many problems and issues. Never see hardly anyone smile anymore and most talk about problems or issues either what they are experiencing or someone else. It's a screwed up world today for sure.

I'm 74 and have a cherished wife a couple years younger. We'll see. I'm in Utah as well. I have no fears of how she'd get by if I die first. But the idea of being a widower needs thinking about. I did live 5 years remote from my wife in Kentucky and did great, as she did too. I have two options: Get back closer to my kids farther away, or hope my wife's kids, geographically close might care about me a bit.

I'm 75 and retired. But I do have a much younger GF who is a career woman. I am buying my own home as is she. I live with my dog and cat. My GF and I spend an average of 3 weekends a month together. I owned my own businesses for over 35 years and understand what she is going through. I'm supportive and never critical of her. We both enjoy our time together and have long phone conversations probably 2-3 nights a week. Neither makes demands of the other. It's comfortable for both of us. No reason to be lonely unless you want to be. Just be realistic on the woman you choose to spend time with.

Lotta truth here. Especially about emergencies and nobody else around. I “do” keep my phone with me at all times while in my home. Another thing is having to be in the hospital for something, and not having anyone around. I know for a fact I was treated differently, because no one was there to fight for me, or know how I’m being treated. My lesson there was to tell someone I’m in the hospital, and get them to visit. I don’t like asking people for help, but sometimes I have to like it or not.

As a veteran, I stay active in the American Legion as the Finance Officer. There are so many activities out there for seniors. I do not drink alcohol or sugary drinks. I make my own healthy meals. It's easy to do if you make your healthy practices routine. Make your bed everyday. Simple things like that. Thank you for your video and your concern. Rob in N.C.

This is a serious topic. I'm 66. I buried my mother almost 4 years ago. She lived alone until her health started failing. Due to my own situation going south, I was able to move in and take care of her. The last year, she could do nothing for herself. Six months before she passed she fell and hit her head. I'm pretty sure if I hadn't been there, it would have been the end for her. Watching what she went through, well let's just say, I don't want to go through that alone, but alone I am. I work, and I have a few friends, but I live alone. Which in itself is not a problem. But I do worry about what happens when I reach the point I can't do anything. That usually happens before the end comes and that's what concerns me.

I listened to the first minute. If you are worried go to assisted living or get one of those medical alert things.. life is always a trade off, in this case for me it is a lot more freedom for assuming a little more risk. We must each make our own call. I’m only 70, maybe I’ll feel different at 80, doubt it.. Also, keep yourself physically fit functionally, strength train, stretch, do some cardio.. If you are stronger and practice balance you won’t worry so much about falling.. Cheers!

I think people are having a blast being alone. Myself, I never knew how much I craved time alone and how awful it was to never have silence when I was married to the extrovert covert narcissist who loved to provoke me. Now I spend my days in the company of 3 dogs, 9 cats, and have my garden. I never knew how good I sleep by not having anyone on my bed. Been celibate and hermit for 7 years. This lifestyle fits me. I do things at my own pace, and the quiet and peaceful days have restored my nervous system. If I die alone, no problem. No one dies alone. You will see how this is true. Don't worry, relax, enjoy life. Pursue hobbies. DO take care of yourself, cook at home, be clean. You deserve it.
