Thank you, Mark, for your riveting, truly moving, and inspirational life story that you narrated in your inimitable style: fluent, straight from the heart, and absolutely engaging. We've been combing the internet for stories of sheer bravery and unwavering faith in our human capacity to bounce back from adversities, despite setbacks and pitfalls strewn all around. We are recommending this post, including your enlightening website, to some Americans here in Florida who, because we're immigrants from the Philippines, have been begging us for everything we can share with them about our native country. Some of them have long been planning to retire there, and your deep insights and personal experiences there as an expat for years who's now raising a family (with a baby soon to come! CONGRATULATIONS!) would become guideposts for them to use and cherish. Thank you for befriending expats who, like you, have profound and abiding respect for the people, culture, and women of the Philippines.
It's amazing how once you moved to the Phils that your life just started taking one serendipitous turn after another with a few wee bumps in the road-- it's almost like it was all meant to be. You defeated the dragon of depression and pushed through to the other side and now you have a "happily ever after" life. It's an inspiration to those who are in the same boat as you once were . It's really a beautiful story that gives others hope.
I was so depressed & lonely in the USA. I moved to Cambodia and live a comfortable life on $500/month. I even started my own TH-cam channel. I am so glad I made the permanent move to Asia.
What a gift to hear your story in your own beautiful words. Your rare level of transparency, honesty and humility lift us all up. I am so happy for you, Jen and the baby and I’m excited to see how things continue to grow and evolve for you all. May the blessings continue to multiply!
I remember seeing your first interview on Old Dogs channel and thinking “what a poor schmuck!” Now look at you! I’m so happy to see how wonderfully your life has turned around.
I'm a Flatlander stuck up here in a mountain town. I am a law abiding citizen and veteran Trying to work my way through the incredibly corrupt justice system here in the police state of America. Hoping to get the hell out of here before they manage to bust me down below the poverty line. Painfully sell my positions for pennies on the dollar like Mark did. And I can't wait to get away from these small town local yocals . Amazing how wicked nasty and cruel some of these locals can be towards an outsider. My life is miserable here and I'm trying like hell to get out. People's minds getting darker at every level of society! I'm just telling myself that I'm going to be there one of these days. And when I get there, I will be looking for a boat.
Every Man Has a Story and you certainly do. Whenever I see Beef Jerkey in a store I think of You bringing it with you . I check your channel every day , trying to catch your next livestream. Cheers !
Thanks for sharing your story Mark. It gives hope. I'm American female in a European country and can't see myself here forever. I trying to figure out do I stay, go back to America, or another country. I know your audience is male but as a female I enjoy listening to all the story's and what gets people there. And what they have over come as well. Some story's are so inspiring and make me smile. Can't imagine what it would be like for a single woman living in the Philippines. I'll continue to listen, wait and see what happens. I'm glad you got your second chapter in the Philippines and life is so much better for you. Blessings to Jenn and the baby.
I too had hit the end.. but yet here I am. Most never understand the feelings of being at the last bit of all. I moved.. changed my life and well, I am still here. Good luck to you Mark
Thanks for the new video and it's a story worth hearing again. You're one of the first channels I watched about The Philippines on TH-cam and about your life. It was a good story for me to hear at the time and after maybe a 6-12 month period I came here and I'm getting things back to stable. I think it's a positive story and helps give people some hope who are struggling with all the things you mentioned back home - friends who have passed away, inflation and job changes as we get older. Best to you and your wife and I hope for a pleasant delivery at a hospital you like. Dan
Great story. I think it's clear that you are a tough guy, because intead of feeling sorry for yourself and getting depressed, you made a huge change in your life (and it worked). Unfortunately, not everyone can say that Things are getting harder, and it's easy to lose hope for something better in life. You are the proof it can be done...
Bless your heart. Sorry you got shafted. Sorry you were ill. Glad you’re healthy & in a good place now. Thanks for sharing info about why men are the way they are. I’m a widow. Enjoying life. God bless you❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Been watching your channel for awhile Mark. My first time to watch your channel about your life. Thank you for sharing. I used to be from California but now residing in Florida. I am 72 years and somewhat retired. I am considering leaving in the Philippines maybe half of the year. I was born, grew up and educated in the Philippines and immigrated in States on my mid twenties. May be someday I can come visit and meet you and Paul in Dumaguete. Good luck with your new family.
An amazing journey - and no doubt there are millions of other men on the same road - I hope they have the strength and inspiration to survive and prosper!
Great Testimony Mark 💎 I know in my life Lord works in mysterious ways &prepares us for the future the way that he does. He knows you 🌬️ 🌹 Real Happy for you., God bless you, your wife and your coming son. 🎊
amazing story Mark. i would never think you were down and out in your life. you are so on top of things. you understand things and have a great attitude about everything. i respect you for making changes for the better in your life. you are truly an inspiration. keep doing what you do. you are living the dream. enjoy every minute of every day. life is good😊
Your story is always inspiring to me Mark. I went to the Philippines recently (because of you mainly and what you've said) and planned to get to Dumaguete to maybe meet you, but only got as far as Moalboal after a month travelling and then had to come back to work just this week. I will return early next year for sure as I loved it very much... everywhere was so exciting and beautiful in many ways to me... thank you so much for the inspiration)
Hello Mark, I watched the other video a few years ago and this one today all of it which reminded us of the saga it took to get to paradise and find your happiness. I wish you all the best for you, Jen and your baby.
I have been following your channel for a few years and knew your story, but I watched this video, maybe I could pick up some more nuggets. Very inspiring life story, moving from the depths back to the heights. I have been to Philippines lots of times but want to visit Dumaguete to meet you and some of the other vloggers I follow.
I have been following you for a long time but I don't think I ever commented. I liked this video. Life has its ups and downs, but the tough keep going. You are a tough guy. Remain tough because tough times will continue.
Good story, thanks for sharing...I was in Thailand for 2 years, have been back in the U.S. for 6 months..lonely, not much to look forward to..PI may be in my future..I realize I can't sustain for much longer..
I know exactly what you mean about the surprise bills in the mail box in the USA, I am glad I no longer have mail box in Thailand. The only bill I have is water and electricity .
Hello Mark, I am French and I follow your videos which I find very interesting. Amazing how you were able to take advantage of the difficult situation you were in. I am 66 years old, I have visited Thailand several times, which I really like, but too many tourists. I watched your videos and also those of your compatriots, which made me want to see what my expatriation possibilities were, but the downside with my age is the health coverage which does not work after 65 years old or with exorbitant amounts, so I backed away from the problem. Gérard
Sounds like i would fit in there too. I have no family just one brother. The only thing I'd have to take with me is my record collection, about 1000, mostly rock and heavy metal. My income right now is fairs and festivals doing face painting and temporary tattoos mostly, and i make toys and wood crafts. Don't know if there would be a market there for a face painter. I'm also an artist, I'm trying to get my art going on the Internet. I can do space art and some wild stuff like flaming skulls. I also do airbrush t shirts. Mark, i have heard your story before but it was nice to hear you tell it again.
WOW !!! What an amazing story…. I was living there on the island of Catanduanes for 10 months when I had a server stroke. I was stuck on Catanduanes for 2 more months before I could travel to Manila (St. Luke’s hospital in BGC) I was there for 7 additional months before I could fly back to the USA because of blood clots in my leg. I am partially paralyzed in my right (dominant) side and trying to recover. I would love for my Filipina wife (20yrs married) to be able to return there in Philippines. Please pray that someday we can return.
Wow! What a very inspirational story, Mark 👏 🙏 🙌 ...I admire the way you handle your situations back then. There's always hope and a solution to each problem, I must say. Congratulations on your coming baby 👶 ❤, stay safe, and God bless you 🙌 🙏 and your family ❤❤❤
Great story, i like your "Down to earth" approach of talking. in my opinion the people that had the hardest times in their life have the most wisdom. i am going to retire this coming Fall to the Philippine's. you sound like me, id rather sit down for a cup of coffee rather than drink. ill keep watching your videos along with pauls. Cheers!
That was a great Video. Very uplifting. You have good skin, so that means that you may have healthy heart, liver, kidneys ect. Watch out for eating Pork, even though it may taste good, and is cheap to purchase...it is not on the list of healthy foods to consume. Gradually over time stop eating that, if you have been eating that at all. I don't know everything , but I do know some things. The best wishes on the new arrival to your family, when it comes. Be blessed. Thanks for sharing.
I learn a little from each of these channels. I have a good life and want to come at 50 but likely wait to 57 to keep my federal health insurance for life. They confirmed they would reimburse my medical oversea. I have some health issues so I can relate to your situation
Just want to touch bases with you. I am also a Thornton and you not only look like my father’s family but your underlying personality is also familiar. Grand Junction Iowa is the place where a couple generations are buried and where I left my father’s ashes after he passed on. We have a similar life story and when my mother is no longer with us I will be moving to the Philippines with my Filipino wife of 34 years. I enjoy your content and I hope you continue to be blessed.
Hi Mark!....you've had a very interesting life. I think you should write a book. Now you will probably have the best part of your life when you become a father again. I'm sure you're looking forward to that.Take care!🇨🇦
Hi Mark, what a story. I am 65 getting to 66 kind of fast. My life has a lot of ups and downs like you. I am not in the best of shape , but I can walk some and get around. But I only have my SS. What kink of money can you make at TH-cam ? Just a ball park ? Like 20 subscribers ?
Good morning Mark, Just sitting here listening to your video, I have a big question for you I recently Lost my social security benefits from America February the 2nd of the month & now also March 1st, I am definitely a American citizen living in the Philippines, on the luzon Island. I am living in San Jose del Monte city, Bulacan, muzon area. I've been trying to get ahold of the US embassy in Manila and nobody to talk with or nothing, just a operator & recording which I have left massages, All I need is just appointment with social security in manila.I have run out of options.I have called america soc. sec. and many different places & am not getting any where, I was wondering if you knew anything about anything I could do about my situation. I almost forgot I also have been online sent a form called FBU & submited it to social security & set it to Manila embassy hoping to get appointment with social security office and no response either, I've done that twice.Thank you for any thing that you could may help me with, so much appreciated..😢
I suggest you call the Social Security office in the city you applied at. The office in Manila does accept phone calls but only for a couple of hours twice a week. You can also email them
Touching story that many of us expats or wanna be expats have experienced in one form or another. I think being content with what one has and guarding it is something we lose sight of from time to time. I know i did and it nearly cost me dearly but thankfully i got a chance to fix it which i did. Deep down your a good guy i think. Just be more stoic when things get tense 👍
Hi Mark, I want to say well done!. Your biography is fascinating, & I marvel at your grit & tenacity. Your rewards are hard earned & well deserved. I want to ask you what the income tax is like over there?. Do they Scrooge you?, or is it light on the account?. Cheers & stay content, healthy & happy!. 🤠🍻👍🏻
I really enjoyed your video, and I've been watching you now for several years. I hope your life continues to keep getting better each day. I must admit I was a little upset at that group of caddy men that were acting up, pushing your buttons, I can see the dangers associated with some expats, Thats probably the biggest danger there for some, bad people. Well, congrats on Rogan coming soon, and take care.
Marc made it, not everyone does. Hear the horror stories along with success stories. I have encouraged some expats to stay and others not to. Don’t get discouraged. But be prepared for curve balls.
Mark this is such an uplifting video, But then you have always been an uplifting person. If life gives you lemons you just keep turning it into lemonade. Thanks for sharing my friend and look forward to catching up with you again in a few months. Thanks for sharing!
Would you ever consider writing a book about your life? You have had to deal with so much crap, and you not only survived but succeeded. Your story should remind guys who have hit hard times not to give up. All the best to you and Jen.
Mark is the true Pioneer for expats in Dumaguete. He does it with class. His wife is also represents that. Anything negative you hear are jealous people not capable of overcoming like Mark did.
Hey Mark, hello from Florida Thanks for sharing your heartwarming experience brother 🙌. I’m trying to get my ducks in a row for a visit to the Philippines. I am retired now, but before I just make a 100% commitment I’ll get my boots on the ground and check out the landscape first for a while. I know this is a personal question and you may have mentioned it in other videos or during this one, but I missed it, what was your monthly SSI installment?
Thank you, Mark, for your riveting, truly moving, and inspirational life story that you narrated in your inimitable style: fluent, straight from the heart, and absolutely engaging. Thank you for watching and for your kind words
This was good medicine. I am in a dark place, and this gave me hope for a better future.
Don't give up. If I can do it so can you
Mark, thank you for your story. You give a lot of hope for those seems hopeless living in US.
You're welcome 😊 Don't give up

Good story, just to prove that if you keep slugging your way through life, you will make it.
Nice. Vinyl sounds best
WOW !!! What an amazing story…. I was living there on the island of Catanduanes for 10 months when I had a server stroke. If you were making 15 - 20K per month and you lost your house and everything else, you must have had some serious financial irresponsibility going on.

Well done Mark, adapt & overcome!
Just out of interest, where are your family in the Uk? I'm in Dorset southern England.
Stay happy, keep up the vids👍
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment 😀
I really enjoyed your video, and I've been watching you now for several years. I hope your life continues to keep getting better each day. I must admit I was a little upset at that group of caddy men that were acting up, pushing your buttons, I can see the dangers associated with some expats, Thats probably the biggest danger there for some, bad people. Well, congrats on Rogan coming soon, and take care.
Thank you 😊
Marc made it, not everyone does.
Thank you Adrian. We look forward to seeing you again too
It’s a more pleasant experience watching you at home rather than that noisy ground zero
Very enjoyable video so you arrived at age 62. Now how old are you presently
68
Would you ever consider writing a book about your life? You have had to deal with so much crap, and you not only survived but succeeded. Your story should remind guys who have hit hard times not to give up. All the best to you and Jen.
No. I only write Supernatural thrillers. My life stories I share on TH-cam
Hey Mark
I dated a Filipino girl long ago but she asked me if I was a god fearing man ? Kind of turn me off .
Mark is the true Pioneer for expats in Dumaguete. He does it with class. His wife is also represents that. Anything negative you hear are jealous people not capable of overcoming like Mark did.
Can you explain those glasses? Interested...
Bought them at the mall $10

Hey Mark, hello from Florida Thanks for sharing your heartwarming experience brother 🙌.
I’m trying to get my ducks in a row for a visit to the Philippines. I am retired now, but before I just make a 100% commitment I’ll get my boots on the ground and check out the landscape first for a while.
I know this is a personal question and you may have mentioned it in other videos or during this one, but I missed it, what was your monthly SSI installment?
$1100
