  • Hey everyone, here is a quick how to video on change your transmission filter and "flush" your transmission. I should note that this is not a full flush, but I dumped about 7L/Quarts, leaving about 3 in. Take a look and let me know if you have any questions. Also note, this is very similar to doing the 04 and earlier models too!

  • @Adamz678
    @Adamz678 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That little piece is considered a lifetime seal, not needed to be replaced unless the seal was damaged or faulty which is rare. But if that is the case or you absolutely need to change it just because, a fat easy out/extractor with the obvious amount of downforce is the best way for removal without damaged the outer sealing surface.

    @electricamish 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've left the old upper seal in the transmission before too, with decent results, .....didn't want to damage the trans housing trying to pry out the old one and maybe create a void around the metal seal.

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes its better to leave well-enough alone. Even seeing the slight chips when I removed the trans filter seal, sometimes it is just better to leave the seal in vs running the risk of severe damage. I agree entirely.

    I used a needle nose pliers to grab the lip of the old steel o ring, twist the lip inward and this implodes the steel ring and it will fall out. the new one is installed with great care and I used an appropriate sized socket to gently tap it in place. I also install two much larger magnets close to the filter inlet to trap more particles....go video, thanks.

    I haven't read all the comments so Im not sure if someone has already suggested this but I have an 04 grand prix gtp and also work on many gm vehicles with similar trans drain and fill procedures. That part of the filter (filter seal) almost always gets stuck up inside the valve body and YES it is a pain to try and get out. Anyone who ever runs into this problem can just leave it up there. Thats right, just leave that old seal up there and just take the seal off of the new filter. Just push the new filter up and it will lock into the old seal. Good Luck

    I've been planning on doing this to my GP for a while. With COVID and being home, i'll actually get to it. As a recommendation to a lotta people, up here in Canada, DEXRON VI is the price of gold. But i contacted some dealerships here and they sell the AcDelco stuff for like $30 per 5L jug. That's cheaper than the no name brands at Walmart and CT.
    As a question though, why don't you just take off the transmission line that goes to the radiator and start the car - the pump will push all the the fluid out? It's almost a complete flush? I think you could probably even do it without removing the pan if a person just wants to change the fluid but not the seal/filter. It would get rid of a lot of the stuff inside the torque converter, etc.
    Also if a person didn't want to remove the pan but just change some of the transmission fluid, do you think they could just buy a hand pump, put it down into the transmission dipstick tube and suck all the fluid from the pan? I believe Princess Auto sells one here in Canada for like $17 but wasn't sure how effective it would be.
    Thanks a bunch man!

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Darren. I currently run Dexron VI in my GP as well..it is definitely the way to go.
      To answer your question, you definitely DO NOT want to perform a full transmission flush on the Grand Prixs. He 4t65e transmissions are VERY finicky. Drain and fills like in this video are perfectly fine...even doing them once a year or every other year. But, full flushes actually puts strain on the transmission. Sounds crazy, but it is very true. If you are intent on keeping the car going, you are better to do multiple drain and fills.
      For pumping out, I honestly never tried on this car. However, I would be worried because of the same issue above.
      Some background, just as an FYI. These transmissions are sensitive to wear, for things inside coming loose, and for sediment build up. The sediment build up is important to note, as in a weird sort of way, the sediment sort of fills in gaps in wear areas in the transmission. When you do a full flush (or possibly, when pulling in fluid from the dipstick), one of 4 things could happen
      1. Something that is worn could come loose and get stuck somewhere in the transmission
      2. Something that is worn could come loose and cause part failure
      3. Sediment gets cleaned out, causing slippage
      4. Sediment gets dislodged and stuck somewhere in the transmission, causing overheat or failure.
      I know this is weird-sounding, and definitely not common in many cars. But I have seen it happen to many of these transmissions. Luckily, my transmission is running smooth as of now.
      As an alternative, I got a transmission pan with a drain plug. You can drain the fluid a couple of times without needing to change the filter, which is very helpful. Check it out here.

    • @NexusAuto

      www.walmart.com/ip/Permatex-80064-High-Tack-Spray-A-Gasket-Sealant-Spray-4-oz-Aerosol-Can/146935839
      Check your local parts store or Walmart. It works pretty good. Permatex also makes a smaller can, I think. And there is other brands too. Don't use dielectric Grease, as it can be messy and when you adhere the pan, it can leak into the transmission fluid if youre not careful. The gasket sealers /adhesives are the way to go

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, I get that. Especially with how sensitive these transmissions are.
      Unfortunately, doing this is an 'at your own risk' situations. But the big issue is doing a full flush on these transmissions...these seem to do a lot of damage to the transmissions. A drain and fill, like this video, have a lot less risk (things can still go wrong, but the chances are very low). The mileage is less the issue...it's more the condition of the transmission. When you check the transmission fluid...is there any silver, metal flakes/sparkles in the fluid? If not, you may be ok to do it.

  • @XxMalabooo

Now I am having a hell of a time getting the new one in. I ended up putting a deep socket to it and tapped it in with a hammer and bent the ring. So now I have to go buy a new filter kit. Can anyone tell me the best way to get the new o-ring in? (Without bending it like my dumb ass)

    Thats a fair bit more complex from my understanding. According to some forums, a special machine is required to get that last 2 or 3 litres/quarts out. However, I cannot get a full confirmation from anyone yet. Sorry, cant give you a direct answer on this one. But this flush did take out about 7 litres/quarts from my system. depending on the condition of your transmission, that may be enough. Let me know if you have any other questions. I have 150k on mine - fluid is black, but there are no shifting issues. Should I change it as preventative maintenance? I am thinking of installing the ZZP PCM in the near future which will probably be tougher on it

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I say so. Bad/old fluid is not good for the transmission on these cars. Do not flush the system...as in, do not bring it somewhere and have them drain all the fluid and put fresh fluid in. This causes all sorts of issues on these cars. Instead, this video shows only draining some of the fluid, and putting fresh fluid in. Be cautious though...this is very low risk, but there is still a small risk. Check the fluid on your dipstick really closely...does it have any metal particulates in it? Does it feel gritty? If it does, funny as this sounds, be cautious when doing to fluid drain and fill. If the fluid is just black, but seems clear of any particulates, then you should be ok to drain and fill like this video. The fact that you are getting the PCM is definitely another reason to get this done. This only drains about 4 liters of fluid, but there is a lot more in there that doesn't come out. May be a good idea to drain and fill the fluid, drive 100 miles, then do it again, then another 100 miles, and then a third time. Hope this info helps

    • @nnnofxxx

      hey thanks for watching and great feedback!
      this is a very common problem with Rendezvous. in fact, I've dealt with this happening before on one another one, and I had a car in this weekend with the same issue.
      unfortunately, there is no direct "fix" to this. problems can stem from the trans itself, to cooling system, to fuel system issues (like fuel filter or fuel pump)
      I'll tell you what I did to fix the last one, along with what seems to be the problem on the current 'vous
      on the back of transmission, above the pan, there is a electrical plug called the transmission shift control solenoid (if I recall the exact name). its an often missed part. it should be able to be picked up at a parts store for about $40. its hard to get to, but it seemed to do the trick last time. I would start with this part. but there is no guarantee that this will fix it either, and there is a long list of potential faults
      I may have a video up soon when I get the part in for the 'vous I have in right now. keep watching!

      100% correct. At the time that I filmed this, I didn't know that, but it is the same. I think the only real major difference is the passenger side CV shaft and differential, so the flush should more or less be the same. Thanks for watching and correcting that point for the vid!

    First off, I love all your videos as I have a Grand Prix myself. My issue is I have a 2005 Grand Prix with 222 thousand miles runs pretty good for the most part, just need a couple suspension parts. Over a period of time I feel like the transmission has been running weird. The gears really don't shift unless I let off the gas and let it engage otherwise it will like Rev but not really shift. Then sometimes it goes into this weird mode where the engine or transmission is making like a surging sound before the gear engages which it then shifts hard. Does this sound like I need a transmission flush? Or something else?

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for watching Nick. Appreciate it for sure.
      For your issue, I would probably start with a couple of things.
      1. I would definitely start with a transmission flush. Maybe move up to Dexron VI fluid (which I did for my 2005). Change the filter as well. This fixes many shifting issues, and is the most cost effective fix.
      2. I remember having a similar issue to yours, and it turned out to be a really dirty throttle body. The Fly By Wire throttle bodies get gunked up with carbon, and start to stick. this sometimes leaves the throttle open, and mimics the car not shifting, and the shifting at high RPM. Do you have a hard start too? I would consider trying a throttle body cleaning. It is also cheap and easy, and if it is not the fix, it couldn't hurt doing it as maintenance anyways. (if you haven't done it already).
      I would probably start with these 2 things, and see if there is any improvement.

    • @nickstefaniw2206
      @nickstefaniw2206 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for taking the time out of your day to help me. Yeah I have been having a starting issue where like 30% of the time I have to hold the key in to start it, Or remove the key then put it in again. I got a system induction cleaning a year ago or so and it solve the issue where I had to put on the gas as I was starting the car, but I never had any transmission issues or any hard shifts. I'm going to get a transmission flush and clean the throttle body again and see if that solves the issue. If it doesn't then it might be a possible transmission control solenoid?

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem at all. If you are having the starting issue, I would probably start with the Throttle Body first, just to be sure. Then do the transmission flush. Hopefully either option, or both together, fix your hard shifting and starting issues. If this doesnt fix the issue, there is a few other possible issues, all isolated to the Transmission. The Control Solenoid would definitely be the next place I look too.

    • @nickstefaniw2206
      @nickstefaniw2206 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NexusAuto so in the last few weeks I got the transmission flush and throttle body cleaning. It didn't make anything worse but it didn't fix the issue even though my starting is more powerful and better from the throttle body cleaning. Next week I'm changing my spark plugs and ignition coils. Then if the issue is not fixed I'm going to take it to the shop and have them check it out.

    • @nickstefaniw2206
      @nickstefaniw2206 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NexusAuto do you think it could be the mass air flow sensor, mass air pressure sensor or not even transmission related? It's a weird issue. Like it doesn't downshift or upshift Right. It revs a few times rather than shift. Then it eventually shifts into 4th. Then all of a sudden this weird mode happens I don't know if it's slipping or something else but the engine noise changes and it makes that surging noise from first in a second then second into third shift hard. The gear shift better in this mode but it shifts hard. Once I shut the car off and wait a second and turn it back on its back to normal. I wonder what this is.

      I hate to say it, but the transmission in these cars, the 4t65e, is easily its weakest part. They have to be babied and taken care of, or problems arise. Hopefully that is not the case for you. I would start with something simple. Have you checked the fluid level? And if that is good, when was the last time that the fluid was changed along with the filter? Often times, that will fix the issues with these transmissions

      I agree..a flush on a 4t65e is a terrible idea. A drain and fill, what is in this video, is just fine. A flush...you can almost guarantee transmission failure at some point afterwards

      @@NexusAuto Had me worried there for a minute lol. Sorry for not watching the video or reading the description. Your video was recommended and I read grand prix Trans flush and died a little inside lol While the pan is off its also a really good idea to put a trans-go shift kit in and if your 4t65e is pre 06, it's a good idea to upgrade from dexron 3 to dexron 6. I've also had better luck sealing the factory reusable gaskets than the ones provided, even on 20 year old cars. As for the filter gasket I use a plastic pick to fold it over and then pull it out with long needle nose plyers making sure not to score the bore. Great channel man.

      @@RickyGuterson LOl no worries at all...I completely understand. I should probably change the title to drain and fill, since you are not the first to mention it haha. In any case, I know it is in good faith, especially since you are pretty well versed in the GP and 4t65e. You had some great recommendations and funny enough, I am already there. I had installed a shift kit, although it was a ZZP one, not trans-go. If I had known at trans-go at the time, I would have been that one, as it is superior. Mind you, the zzp one is great, but maybe another time, I will upgrade further. I ahve also gone to Dexron VI, did it a few years ago and I change it roughly once a year, so via the drain and fills, I am fairly confident I have almost all the Dex III out. And I installed a Dorman drain pan, which had a drain plug. Made drain and fills much much easier. And I completely agree with the stock gasket...much better quality vs the aftermarket ones. Still using it on my 05 as of now. Thanks for the great tips and feedback! Very much appreciated!
